Shadows of a Soul
Chapter two
Kaya walked out of the gymnasium panting as she headed to the track field. She looked at the sky as she walked out the front doors, cloudy with the sun peaking through but still obscured. *Just like life… even in the darkest of time there will always come a light.* she thought as she stretched for track. “Ten laps around the track, running, jump the hurdles, sprint the corners, do it all under three hours. Get it? Got it? Good. GO!” shouted the coach. Kaya started out at a decent running pace as the other kids groaned and sprinted. Most of them burned out as they got to the second lap. Kaya gracefully jumped each of the hurdles, and sprinted as she rounded the corners. She came to a stop two and a-half hours later, out of breath and panting. She was the first to finish. The other kids slowly came in to a stop holding their sides, and walking to the cooler for water. “Okay everyone I want chairs for the next fifteen minutes.” Everyone walked to the side of the cemented bleachers and got ready to position themselves to do the painful exercise. After fifteen minutes, everyone was allowed to stand their thighs aching and calves sore. Kaya stretched her legs and torso and after they were dismissed ten minutes late, she sprinted full speed to the school's swimming pool. “About time you got here!” shouted to coach as she walked in. “How is it my fault coach made us run three extra laps for complaining I didn't do?!” Kaya said back to the coach as she walked into the locker room. She quickly changed into her black one piece suit and walked out of the locker room to the diving board getting ready to do the late punishment of ten back and forth laps, when the coach stopped her. “Not now do it at the end of practice. We have a swim meet next Sunday. You all need to train as hard as you can. To day we are going to train your lungs to hold air for long periods of time in the water. Okay everyone in the five foot area.” said the coach and the group of twenty moved to the instructed area. Kaya floated in the water for she was only 5'1” and could not touch the ground with her head above the water. “Alright since most of you can stand in this area, I am going to give you a thirty pound weight to tie around your ankle and when you need air stand.” said the coach passing the weights to the swimmers. “Kaya when you need air untie the weight.” She said to Kaya. “That doesn't make any sense! If I can't breath or see you want me to untie myself to come up for air? No, that's stupid.” Kaya argued. “Well, what do you want me to do? Move you to where you can stand? That's not fair to everyone else. Deal with it.” said the coach harshly. “You hag, everyone else is taller than I am by four inches or more. If this is how you're going to treat the height-challenged team members, I'm quitting.” She said swimming to the edge and climbing out. “Fine, you probably couldn't even handle it anyway.” Said the coach when Kaya began walking. Kaya stopped in her tracks and slowly turned. “I would like to see you do all the crap you make us do. Sorry, you probably couldn't handle it anyway.” She said turning and resuming her walking. “Well… I… Well… Fine! I won't do this! Please stay on the team you're the fastest swimmer we've got!” shouted the coach. “Fine, but you tick me off one more time and I quit. Am I understood?” she said walking back and glaring at the coach, who nodded vigorously in understanding. “Good.” Kaya climbed into the water and turned. “Well?” she said annoyed. “Free-style in the pool until it's time to leave.” Said the coach walking into her office and sitting her chair. The two hours of swimming passed quickly and at the end Kaya was about to walk into the locker room when she was stopped by the coach who made her do the ten additional laps and ten more for back-talking earlier. Kaya walked to the diving board and dove in and began the laps as everyone left (even the coach). As Kaya began her third lap she stopped and listened to the sound that she had heard. It sounded like step and the fluttering of wings... She looked over the edge at the entrance of the pool where she saw a boy her age dressed in a jeans and a dark blue polo shirt with long dark blue hair in a loose pony tail, skin pale as the moon, intriguing murky blue eyes and… blue and black feathery wings. Kaya looked in awe as he looked around and then… at her. He walked over to the edge and looked at her. He tensed. Kaya noticed it and lunged backwards as he swiped at her head. Kaya swam to the middle of the pool as the creature flew above her. She surfaced for air and it swiped again as she went back under. She kicked off the bottom of the pool and came shooting out of the water grabbing the creature and pulling it into the water with a splash. This was her territory and this thing was going to play by her rules. She swam quickly away and climbed onto the diving board in a crouch eyeing the bird man. “Who are you?” She hissed. “Please have mercy…” he sunk in the water. Kaya rolled her eyes and dove into the water and pulled it to the edge of the pool, climbed out of the water and pulled him out too. She listened for a heartbeat and when she didn't hear one she began CPR. After a few seconds he coughed up water and Kaya stood and flipped him onto his stomach with her foot as he continued to cough up water. “T-Thank you. I am forever in your debt. For give my insolence.” He said bowing at her feet. “Okay… Um… Who and what are you?” She said sitting on the diving board again. “I am Falcon. I am a demon sent by Lord Dante to eliminate all threats to his plan and you are threat number one.” He said matter a factly. “Ok. What is his plan and how do I fit into this? Wait. Did you say demon?” “Yes I did hence the wings. His plan is to take over all three worlds, the mekai or demon world, spirit world, and the nigen-kai or earth. I don't know how you fit in… I just do as I am told. Can we continue this else where there are unwanted ears about.” “Um… Yea… I have to change my clothes, and then we can leave. Can you do something about your wings?” she said walking into the locker room. She quickly changed he clothes and walked out to see Falcon standing there completely dry and his wings gone. Kaya looked at him as he walked in-front of her to leave the pool building, *He's gorgeous but, should I trust him…* Kaya walked into her house and smelt food cooking in the kitchen. “I'm Home! We have someone else staying here! Yukina where is everyone?” Kaya said walking into the kitchen. “I think their in um… your room…” said Yukina the last part quietly. “WHAT!!!!” Kaya said running up the stairs and into her room and saw Botan and Keiko standing on her balcony. She walked up to them and said “I had one rule, one rule. It wasn't complicated. It was a simple rule. I told you to STAY OFF THE THIRD FLOOR!” said Kaya furious. Keiko and Botan looked at each other and ran down the stairs past Falcon who had been walking up them. He turned and looked at them as they ran to their rooms and continued up the stairs. He walked into Kaya's open room and saw her standing there, her back to him, glowing from the sun setting over the forest in the distance. Falcon approached her and put his hand on her shoulder. She turned around and looked at him. She was crying. He lifted his hands to her face and wiped away her tears, then rested both his hands on the curves of her neck and looked into her eyes. “What's wrong?” he asked tenderly. “I-I…” was all she could say before bursting into tears and crying into his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and stroked her back. “It's okay. It's alright. I'm here. Nothing bad will happen to you, I Promise.” he said leaning his head on her's. “How do you know? No one can promise that not even God.” She said looking up at him. “Because, I would never let you get hurt, Kaya, Never.” said Falcon holding her closely. “Thank you.” She said closing her eyes and for the first time in a long time, she felt safe. “Come on, Yukina is finished with dinner.” He said kissing the top of her head and leading her down stairs by her hand. Kaya ate her food and looked at Botan and Keiko. “I'm sorry.” Kaya said looking at her plate. “What are you sorry for?” they said looking at her. “For yelling at you both. You can go up stairs if you want. I don't mind.” Kaya responded not looking up and putting her hands under the table. Falcon looked at her and under the table he gave her hand a squeeze. “We should have listened to you. We wanted to know what was up there.” “It's okay now.” Kaya said. The conversation dropped there and everyone finished and went into the living room to watch the movie “The Hills Have Eyes”. At the end of the movie Kaya stretched and yawned. Keiko and Botan had already fallen asleep on the couch. “Hey what were you saying at the pool earlier today?” Kaya asked Falcon. “Not here. Upstairs.” He said standing and walking with her to the stairs. They walked into her room and sat on the bed. “Kaya, would you hate me if I said I know why he wants you to die and I won't tell you?” he said solemnly his wings reappearing and fluttering. “Falcon?” she said confused. “Yes, Kaya?” he said turning his head to look at her. She looked at him them gently kissed his lips, “Why does it matter?” He smiled and kissed her passionately “I guess it doesn't.” Falcon pulled down the bed covers and laid down on her bed. Kaya went under too and snuggled up to him and fell asleep in a matter of seconds. Falcon looked at the sleeping girl as his master, Lord Dante, appeared in the darkest corner of the room. “Falcon, why isn't she dead?” Dante asked his elegantly cut white hair moving in a non-existent wind. “Because I'm having fun toying with her. It hurts so much more when you are betrayed by the one you love. Isn't Dante?”
