Shadows of a Soul
Chapter three:
Kaya awoke the next morning to the sound of knocking on her door. Kaya made an attempt to sit up, but she was gently held down by something. She looked over and saw Falcon sleeping peacefully his arms wrapped around her. She smiled and gently moved his arms and walked to the door tiredly. She opened it and saw Keiko smiling “They will be here in an hour! I can't wait! Can we go meet them at the Airport? Please? Please? Can we?” “Yea, I need to get ready then we can go. Okay?” Kaya muttered half asleep. “Alright!” Keiko screamed rushing down the hallway. Kaya shut the door and sighed, “Ah. I live with morning people.” “Well least they're not boring.” Falcon said sitting up in the bed. “Welcome to the daylight.” Kaya said stretching. “I'm taking a shower.” She muttered walking to her closet and pulling out a grey tank top with a black dragon spiraling up from the bottom, a pair of black jeans with rose vines spiraling up her right leg and around her waist ending on her left hip with a blood colored rose. “Okay.” Falcon said standing up, “Do you have any clothes I could wear? If not I'll just wear what I have on no big deal.” Kaya looked at him and said, “Yea. Come with me.” She sat down the clothes and walked across the hall to the white door with the red Gothic letters S-A-M-U-E-L, she reached for the handle and hesitated. “You don't have to…” Falcon started. “No. I do. I've wanted to go in here for a while, but I would talk myself out of it… Now I have a reason…” Kaya said closing her eyes and opening the door. She opened them and saw the clean royal blue room, which she had come to know, covered with a layer of dust. She walked in and to the closet. She opened it and saw all of her brother's clothes and the smell of Musk, pine trees and dust filled her nostrils bringing a tear to her eye. Falcon placed his hand on her shoulder. She turned around and looked at him as he wiped the tear from her eye. She averted her eyes and spotted something on the oak table next to the blue canopy bed, she walked over and picked it up, it was a letter, the last thing he ever wrote, the last thing that he left her. She opened it and began to read:
January 12, 2001
Dear Kaya,
I know you are wondering why we did this, and it being you we've probably been dead for a few years. Kaya, we wanted to watch you grow into the stunning young woman we know you will become, but we can no longer continue to live on this earth. Kaya in order for you and Samuel to live we must die. We want you to know the truth. Your mother and I are Demons. I am a fire demon and the heir to a large portion of the Demon world. Kaya stopped reading; the letter wasn't from Samuel it was from… her parents… Your mother is an ice apparition she has healing powers along with being able to create ice in her hands. I can only create and manipulate fire. We have passed these powers to you and Samuel, and the year you turn sixteen your powers will awaken. Sweetheart, when your powers do come Many demons will try to find you. Even if they try to become your friend, or something closer, DO NOT TRUST THEM. The closer you are to them the easier a target you become. The first to appear will be a servant of Dante. They are by far the vilest and work over long periods of time gaining your trust and love then they rip out your heart and steal your soul. It has happened to the best of our clans members. Kaya I know it hurts to know that we're gone, and that it hurts to live with out the those you love but remember, There is always that one moment when time stands still and the dead walk the earth in a solemn silence looking for what it is that they have left behind .
Love,
Your Parents,
Paige Marie Tao and Samuel Alexander Tao Sr.
P.S. We know for a fact that there are four demons that you can trust to protect you and watch over you. The first is the obvious, Samuel, he promised us that he would do anything to keep you safe, even Die. The second and third are the children of a koorime friend of your mother's Hiei and Yukina. Hiei will be a bit hash at first but he will eventually learn to care. The fourth is a Kitsune named Yoko Kurama. No one knows what happened to him but, he has a habit of “being dead”. Just Remember Sweetie, it always rains the hardest on the ones that deserve the sun, but sooner or later the rain will disappear.

A tear rolled down Kaya's cheek as Falcon came out of Samuel's bathroom Dressed in a pair of jeans and a Dark blue shirt. He saw her crying and rushed over to her. “Kaya, what's wrong?” He asked her. She looked into his eyes. She saw past the colors straight to his soul everything was tainted, and slowly turning black over a dark blue. “You don't have to lie to me Falcon. I know about my powers. I don't care what happens to me now. Kill me if you want. I don't think anyone would care. Just let me die in here.” She said sitting on the dusty bed, her hands in her lap and her head bowed. Falcon walked over to her and lifted her head, “Kaya, What are you talking about? I know that's what I was told to do but I'm not going to. I know we haven't known each other long but I think I'm in love with you.” “You don't have to lie anymore. My parent's said that when I turned sixteen demons would come after me. I turned sixteen last week and here you are.” She said moving her head from his hand with a jerk. Falcon looked at her, somehow all of the pain she felt filled the room and he could feel it tugging at his heart. “Kaya, I just… I wanted… I-I…” Then he moved forward and tenderly kissed her lips. “I swear on my life that I will never hurt you. Kaya I knew Samuel, he was a friend of mine, before he died he made me swear to look after you and I have. Since the day he died, I've kept to my promise. I know it seems like everything around you is a lie but, as hard as it is to believe all of them died to save you. It was a deal with Dante that your parents made. For every person close to you who died you got two years to live. No one ever knew that Samuel would kill himself for you. Those of us in the demon world knew him as a ruthless cold-hearted killer. To us he had no weakness. Then Dante thought he was getting to powerful. He called a meeting for everyone to attend. That was when he threatened to kill you. When Samuel heard that he pinned Dante to the wall with a sword so fast none of even knew it happened till we saw it and said if he ever went near you he would kill him slowly pulling his body apart piece by piece. Dante told him that your time was running out and there was only one person left that could add on time to your protection. That was when Samuel decided to kill himself…” Kaya sat there silent and looking at the letter. She could almost hear their voices reading her the letter, her mother's gentle yet stern voice and the firm, protective voice of her father. She stood up and walked to her room ignoring Falcon she shut the door. She changed her clothes, brushed her hair, brushed her teeth, wiped away her tears and looked at herself in the mirror. She saw the redness in her eyes and put in her angel wing earrings and her choker with a cross on it, and she put on black eye shadow (giving herself the smoky eyes), mascara, and she put body glitter running down one eye so it looked like a tear. She walked downstairs and into the kitchen. Keiko, Yukina, and Botan were waiting anxiously for her and as soon as she walked into the room they all asked “Can we go and get them now????” Kaya nodded her head and took the keys off the key hook in the corner and walked out of the house to the garage. She opened the door and walked up to the H3 (Hummer 3) and got in and started the car. She drove to the front of the house and honked the horn and waited for them all to come out. When they did Keiko, Yukina, and Botan all got in the back. Falcon came out and said, “I'll stay here so that you have room to fit every one. If you're picking up four people then you need the six seats in the back and the one in the front so I'll see you when you get back.” Kaya shrugged and drove away. The ride to the airport was a quiet one except for the three girls giggling. When they were at the airport the three girls ran to the terminal and waited. “What time does their flight get in?” asked Botan. “Seven-thirty.” said Keiko who was giggling her knee up and down. “Five minutes till the plane lands. Then they have to go through customs, which is about fifteen minutes each. Then it still depends on what area of the plane that they rode on. So we'll be here for a little bit.” Kaya said sitting in one of the chairs and leaning her head back. “Kaya is there something wrong?” asked Botan. After a moment of silence Kaya said, “Can I ask you all something without you thinking that I'm crazy…” “Of course.” They all said in unison. “Do you believe that demons can walk in this world freely and that the appearance of the Grim reaper is a bit stereotypical? I mean no one really knows what it looks like so how do we know that the grim reaper isn't a happy person… or that demons are evil what if there are some that are kind and gentle. What if a child was brought up by demons and never knew that they were a demon…” Kaya paused and looked at the face around her all staring at her. “Never mind.” She said as the speaker announced that flight 137 from Tokyo, Japan was arriving. Kaya stood and went to the window watching as the plane slowly descended to the ground and came to a halt. An hour later the passengers slowly started filtering out and into the terminal. “HEY!!!” Keiko called to a boy with so much gel in his hair is looked green. “Keiko!!!” he said as he came running over and gave her a hug. “Where is everyone else?” asked Botan. “They got stuck at customs. They said it might be another hour.” The boy said. Everyone gowned. Kaya stood up and started walking to where the boy had entered. “Kaya where are you going?” asked Yukina. “I'm not staying here for another hour. I'm going to go to customs.” She said as she went through the gate. She went down the hall and found the customs area where she saw three boys talking with a guard and looking frustrated. “Sir is there a problem?” Kaya asked as she walked into the room. “Miss you're not supposed to be in here.” He said gruffly. “Sir these are my guests. They are to stay in my household for a full year. This is an awful way to treat visitors such as them. It is so awful in fact that I might call your boss and let him know what an awful host you're being. It might cost you you're job.” She said pausing as the guard's eyes widened. “No. They can go. Welcome to Russia.” He said handing them their bags and opening the door for them. Kaya waited as a red haired boy with green eyes thanked the man and waited outside of the room for his friends. Then a fugly boy with orange hair who looked like he was trying to be Elvis walked passed her with a suitcase and an animal carrier and then finally a boy with gravity deifying hair and red eyes walked passed her with only a duffle bag. Just what I need a guy with an attitude…Kaya thought as she walked out the door after them. They followed the hallway to the terminal where they were met by four very happy people. Kaya rolled her eyes and stared walking to the door. “Kaya, this is Kubwara Kazuma, Yusuke Urimeshi, Suichi Minimoto, and Hiei Jaganashi.” Keiko said pointing to each in turn. Kaya didn't say anything and kept walking. Kubwara came up to her and said “Hey babe how'd you like to be involved with a real man?” Kaya stopped, along with everyone else, turned to him and smiled. “Yeah I'd Love to be with a real man.” She put her hand on his chest, put her face close to his, he leaned forward to kiss her, she pulled back and said “When you find one let me know.” Everyone smiled a bit except Hiei and Kubwara. Kaya continued walking. Everyone followed (some more reluctant than others). Kaya opened the trunk and everyone piled their luggage in. Then they all piled in to the car. Kaya turned on the radio and the heater. She rolled her eyes and Kubwara and Yusuke began to argue about the window seat. After ten minutes she got so sick of their bickering she pulled onto the side of the road, turned around and got out of the truck and opened the door of the back seat, the side away from the road, and pulled Yusuke and Kubwara out of the car and threw them into the snow. “You WILL Shut UP! You WILL be QUIET or You Will DIE! Am I CLEAR?!” Kaya screamed at them as their eyes widened. Kaya narrowed her eyes “I asked you a question.” They nodded vigorously. “Good. Get in.” she said walking
and shut their door. *She hasn't changed a bit* thought Hiei and Kurama as they began to drive. The rest of the trip was silent. They pulled up to the house and started to get out but suddenly they heard a crash from inside.
