Chapter 1:
--- --- ---
The moon hung low in the midwinter sky, giving some light to illuminate the paths of those who might wander at such a late hour. Though, who would wander the city at such a time was a mystery, as the cold biting winds had long since scared the people into their homes. Yet, despite the weather, one girl still remained outside, walking down a lone street, her fists clenched angrily at her sides.
Her raven-colored hair was secured into a low ponytail, keeping it out of her face, and out of her narrowed royal blue eyes. She was furious, and it was easy for anyone to tell. But what was more surprising about her than her being outside was how she was dressed for the weather. A tank top declaring that she "Needs Supervision", jeans, and boots to add a little to her height. All in all, she stuck out.
"Kuso…" she muttered, looking to either side of her as she continued down the street. "I know I saw him come down here…"
A sudden sound caught her attention, and she spun on her heel, only to come face to face with something that certainly wasn't human. In fact, he was anything but. Bulging black eyes, yellowed teeth sticking out under his lip, and skin that was a deep, dark red with black markings. He smirked at her, and she wrinkled her nose in distaste.
"Do you enjoy looking for trouble, girl?" he said, chuckling a little. "Because I'll kill you, if that's what you want."
She frowned, and took a step back. "Honestly, what makes you think you can kill me? You couldn't kill a child if you tried, you're too weak."
This made the demon angry. "Oh, really? Well, let's just find out."
She didn't flinch. "Fine, you'll regret what you've done."

Hiei looked over at Kurama, who had his eyes closed. Both were sensing for the demon they were tracking, as Yusuke and Kuwabara stood by, waiting.
"Find anything yet, guys?" the Tantei asked, crossing his arms.
"Well, I can sense that a demon did come by here, recently," Kurama said, opening his eyes once more. "The only problem is…"
"He's following a human," Hiei said with a slight snort. "Probably hungry, wants an easy meal."
Yusuke nodded. "Right, then let's hurry and make sure he doesn't get it."
--- --- ---
She glared at the demon, sizing him up and the amount of strength it had. She smirked, despite the fact that she was angry.
The demon raised an eyebrow at the girl's actions; from what he could sense, she possessed no more power than the average human. He laughed to himself. An easy kill.
"What the hell are you laughing at?" she growled.
"You, pathetic ningen!" he yelled as he charged the small girl. The claws on his hands grew several inches and he swung his arm out, going in for a deadly strike.
As he came within a stride of her, she sighed and jumped gracefully over his head, landing behind him. The demon was surprised at the girl's agility, leaving him momentarily confused. She decided to use his disorientation to her advantage.
She glared at the demon, using his momentum as well as her added telekinetic force, to send him crashing headfirst into a nearby brick building.
She walked calmly across the street to the building and folded her arms over her chest. She briefly wondered how important the building she just damaged was, but she shrugged it off almost as soon as it came. She really didn't care.
She glanced casually in the direction of a grumble and the sound of debris shifting. The demon stood and barred his teeth at her. He drew a primitive looking sword made of bone.
Probably human, she thought bitterly. "You know, a tic tac wouldn't kill you."
The demon glared, and raised his sword and charged once more. The raven-haired girl ducked beneath the blow and punched his stomach. As she dodged his falling body, she snatched his sword. The demon fell flat on the pavement of the dark street, and before he could get up again, she slammed the blade through his back and twisted it. The demon released a final shrill cry and fell silent.
--- --- ---
The Detectives took off, Hiei and Kurama in front, following the energy trail the demon had left behind. As they drew closer, sounds of a battle could be heard.
The sight they came upon made them stop. A raven-haired girl drove a bone sword into the back of the very demon they were searching for. They were only a few yards from the young girl, close enough to hear her.
"Well, that was more trouble than it was worth…" she muttered. As she turned, she caught sight of the four boys. She turned to face them fully and crossed her arms. She narrowed her eyes threateningly.
Kuwabara was the first to speak. "You killed it!"
"No shit, Sherlock," she spat.
"But…how?" Yusuke asked. "You're a normal human, aren't you?"
"Yes, and the short one there is a demon, and so is the redhead. You're part demon, and Elvis over there is full human," she snapped. "Now that we have that established, I'll be taking my leave. Sayonara."
She turned on her heel, and started to walk away, but Kurama's voice stopped her.
"May I ask your name?"
She stopped, and slowly turned back to look at him, her deep blue eyes narrowing significantly as she did. "My name is none of your business."
She turned once more, and took another step, when something else stopped her.
"Her name is Shadow," Hiei said, the glow from his jagan fading.
"So, fire-boy speaks? That's nice, but I'm leaving." She took off down one of the alleyways, and the boys chased after her. But, when they reached the entrance to the alley, she was gone, and there was nothing but a dead end.
