~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One could say that it all began with a simple question from Botan.
"Yusuke-kun, would you and the others be up for another mission?"
You could say that.
But actually, it began a few days earlier. It began with one thief.
One sleeping spell.
And one powerful, priceless Crystal of the Three Worlds…
________________________________________________________________ ____
The thief had come like…well, like a thief in the night. It had been quite easy, actually. There were only fifteen guards…hardly enough to keep out a Fifth Ward Spellcaster and Thief. It was barely a challenge. Already the dark shadowy figure had immobilized their communication with a simple "immobialias" spell, which had also taken care of the video cameras. Then, she simply froze the motion sensors and used her psychic powers to find out the 14-digit combination of the lock.
Honestly. You'd think that there would be better security guarding one of the most powerful artifacts of all time.
The thief emerged from the darkness, appearing before the guards, looking for all the world like she had just materialized out of thin air.
The leader started. "How'd you--?!"
He never got time to finish. A purple-blue aura had burst from the thief, sweeping over the guards. In seconds, they were all snoozing on the ground.
"Hm. Pitiful." The thief snorted. Two rather long ears were poking from her hair. Something sliver glittered in the centre of two long bangs in the middle of her forehead. A bushy tail twitched around behind her. She was clad in an off the shoulder, slightly low-cut robe with pants that flared out at the bottom underneath it. Colours could not be determined at this point, since her blinding aura blocked them out. The slim figure ascended the steps slowly, keeping a watchful, slitted eye out for booby-traps. When she finally reached the top, she stood and stared.
Atop a large golden pedestal, resting on a plush red cushion, was the Crystal.
It was not very big; the crystal itself was smaller than an egg, yet bigger than a quarter. What made the whole thing seem bigger, as big as an egg, were the other three jewels that surrounded it. At the top of the oval was a sapphire; the left bottom side held an amethyst, and the right bottom side boasted an emerald. The above mentioned were perfect spheres; resembling planets. A thin gold border surrounded all four: the sapphire, the emerald, the crystal, and the amethyst.
Transfixed, the thief ran a slender, long-nailed finger over the shining stone. As she touched the sapphire, she murmured, "Reikai." Touching the amethyst, she said softly, "Makai." And finally, touching the emerald, she whispered, "And Ningenkai." Then she gazed at the crystal and said, "And this small thing is the power that binds them together."
Pocketing the Crystal of the Three Worlds, she turned and descended the steps. She looked at the guards with a thoughtful look on her face. "These fifteen know what they saw; they can identify me. It would be better to just kill them now."
She moved in, drawing her sword with skilled hands. Suddenly, the silver thing on her forehead began to burn, flinging the bangs aside. She winced with pain, a hand automatically going up to her forehead to try and stop the white-hot silver from burning a hole in her own forehead. It wouldn't, of course, because that would lift the curse, but gods how it felt like it would!
Hurry! Kill them now, before it got worse. But her body couldn't move. All the training she had done for pain seemed to shrivel up. This pain was unbearable. Finally, with a slight scream of frustration, she sheathed the sword and nimbly ran from the building.
The pain stopped.
She slowed after running hard for half an hour. Breathing heavily, she touched her forehead, where a silver BV glowed. The initials of the name she commonly went by in the Makai World.
Black Vixen.
A well-trained assassin, swordfighter, thief, and Spellcaster. And Fifth Ward, no less! Right now, she had taken on what she had thought would've been her hardest case yet. But was actually one of her easiest.
The only challenging part was not killing those buffoons. Oh, she would have. But the scar made it impossible.
She gritted her teeth in anger, fangs gnashing against each other. That…that…bastard Koenma…she would kill him…even if it took her several more centuries to do so.
Taking a breath to calm herself down, she stared once more at the crystal in her hands. She allowed herself the pleasure of a small smile.
Soon all three Worlds would belong to her.
And she would kill Koenma.
Soon. Very soon.
She leapt into the air and disappeared from view.
"Gaaaaah!" a shriek could be heard throughout the Reikai office. The ferrygirls stopped curiously. Except one. The Oni kept on with their duties, knowing that they would hear about it in the Gossip Room later at break. Except one.
George, a large blue Oni with a leopard loincloth, burst into the office, along with a lavender-eyed, blue-haired girl in a pink kimono. "Koenma-sama, Koenma-sama, doushita, doushita?" George said distraughtfully.
The toddler had managed to stay in his teenage form, even in his distress. Brown hair and hazel eyes contrasted the blue pacifier in his mouth. "This is horrible!" he said with a note of fear in his voice.
"What is it, Koenma-sama?" the ferrygirl, Botan, said.
Koenma passed her a piece of paper. "You look at it! I can't bear to say it out loud!"
The Oni and Botan gazed at it with curiosity. Then shock. Then fear.
"The…the Crystal of the Three Worlds was stolen, Koenma-sama?!" George said in a panicky voice.
Koenma swallowed. "I'm afraid so." The prince of Reikai moaned, burying his head in his hands.
"But who could've done this, Koenma-sama?" Botan said.
"You know the only person who could get past our defenses so easily!" he retorted.
George's eyes bulged. "Ku…Kurama-san has turned traitor, Koenma-sama?!" he said fearfully.
Even in his distress, Koenma still found the strength to whop the Oni on the head, leaving a large bump. "You big blue oaf, I mean the other person. Or should I say Youko?"
Botan gasped. Her eyes widened. "The Bl…the bla…"
Koenma nodded solemnly. "Yes. The Black Vixen has struck again." He grabbed a holographic communicator and shoved it in Botan's hands. "Get the Reikai Tantei. They might be able to handle it. Get Yusuke and the others."
Botan snatched her oar from hammerspace, leaping on it. "I'll get them." She said, speeding away.
"Now what do we do, Koenma-sama? You know that the Reikai Tantei have no chance against the Black Vixen!" George said distressfully, wringing his hands.
Koenma sighed. "We said that about everything else too. I can only hope that this time, we'll be wrong." He stared out the window.
Black Vixen…you hate me. You will try to kill me. I must admit, you've led us all on quite a chase with everything you've done. But it's over. The Reikai Tantei will take care of you. The mature, strong Spirit Detectives.
_____________________________________________________________
Right then, the "mature, strong Spirit Detectives" were engaged in a water fight at the beach. Well, some of them. Yusuke and Kuwabara were throwing mud at each other, shrieking like wild beasts, already with two-thirds of their body encased in mud. Two other figures stood off to the side, under a rocky crevice in the shadows. Yukina was laughing at Kuwabara's antics, while Shizuru shook her head at the notion that her brother was a mental, hopeless case, finally scooping up some mud and plastering the back of her brother's head with it. Genkai was meditating on a rock, occasionally opening one eye to tell the "dimwits" to shut up. In which case they would be quite for about two seconds until her eyes shut again, then they would burst back into their wild, screaming throwing. Keiko had to keep avoiding Yusuke's attempts to knock askew her two-piece swimsuit front with mud-balls. Finally she tired of that and tackled him from behind, shoving his face into the water. Kuwabara crowed at this and proceeded to dump an armful of mud on the prostrate Reikai Tantei's back.
"Hn." The figure clothed in black sniffed. "Bakas."
The taller figure next to him, clad in a red pair of silk capris and a white Japanese-style short-sleeved shirt with a red bow tie and buttons, smiled. "Well, Hiei, it looks like they're having fun."
Hiei snorted. "They're bakas. No question." He stopped as though considering something. "You're a baka too, for that matter."
Kurama smiled again, moving closer to wrap a lengthy arm around Hiei's waist and squeeze. "But you love me anyway, right?"
Hiei shivered, partly from the ocean breeze that had just swept the beach, partly from the feeling of Kurama being so close…he could still remember the first time Kurama had told him his feelings, the first sensation of Kurama's lips pressing against his…"Hn. Don't push your luck, fox."
Kurama planted a kiss on Hiei's hair and pulled his arm away. "I understand. You're anti-social."
Hiei rolled his eyes-all three of them. "To use a ningen term, whatEVer."
Kurama laughed, a pure, sweet sound that Hiei revelled in. "You're getting there, koibito. You're getting there."
"KYEIEIEIEAAH!" a scream hit the beach. Kurama and Hiei jerked and stared towards the sound.
Botan was there-her face plastered in mud. "YUSUKE-KUN!" she chased him around a few times, finally grabbing his shirt collar from the behind and lifting him into the air. "What, pray tell, was the purpose of that?!"
Yusuke sweatdropped. "Er…"
She sighed and dropped him. "Yusuke-kun, I need to talk to you-all of you. This is urgent!"
They all gathered around her. She looked Yusuke squarely in the eyes. "Yusuke-kun, would you and the others be up for another mission?"
And that is where you could say it all began.
