Chapter One:
“Aha! This is the life! No school, no work, no demons…” Yusuke Urameshi exclaimed to his best friend, Kuwabara, as he relaxed on the living room couch, beer in hand.
Kuwabara followed his friends lead and collapsed on the couch. “You said it!” The beer in his hand followed after the words left his mouth.
“You do know that if the demons do not kill you first, that drink will” The boy’s red headed friend stated as he sat down in the loveseat beside the couch, a glass of water in his hand.
Yusuke sorted and took a sip of his drink. “Yea well, Plant Boy, some of us don’t need just water and sunlight to survive, thank you very much. And I can handle myself just fine!”
Kurama chuckled softly. “And if the demons and that drink don’t do you in, Kayko will.”
“What do you mean by tha-“
“YUSUKE URAMESHI YOU JERK!”
Yusuke winced at the sound of his girlfriends piercing voice. How could he have not heard her enter? Damn… he was really going to get it now.
“Unfortunately, that’s me” Yusuke stood up to bite the bullet. Little did he know that bullet came from a machine gun.
“And just WHAT have I told you about DRINKING?!?!”
“Um… not to…?”
“EXACTLY!” And just WHAT are you doing?!?”
“….relaxing?” He regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth.
“YOU CALL THAT RELAXING! HOW DARE YOU! I SWEAR IF THOSE DEMON’S DON’T KILL YOU THE STUPID THINGS YOU DO WILL! I… I…UGH!!!”
Since Yusuke had ever known Kayko, this was the first time he had found her to be without words. Yusuke watched in shocked silence as his girlfriend stalked off to the kitchen.
“Guess whose sleeping on the couch tonight!” Kuwabara snickered from underneath Yusuke.
“Shut up Baka!” Yusuke muttered as he chucked the empty beer bottle at his friends head, the small ‘clunk’ letting him know he had hit his target.
“Hey!”
“Yusuke?”
Yusuke turned at the sound of a small voice behind him and saw Botan and Yukina standing there. “Oh hey… you three go shopping again?”
“You need to go talk to her…” The ferry girl stated with a smile as she completely ignored his question.
“Yea yea… woman” Yusuke muttered as he shoved his hands in his pockets and headed towards the kitchen. This was the part he hated most about finally being in a relationship. The ‘talking it out’ part’.
“They’ve been at it like this for weeks…” Botan muttered as she collapsed in the spot where Yusuke had been a few seconds ago, the cheery smile had dropped from her face when Yusuke had left the room.
“Maybe getting them together hadn’t been the best idea…” Kurama muttered as he leaned back into the couch and took a sip of his drink. It had been exactly a month ago that Kurama Botan Kuwabara and Yukina had decided the two were meant for each other.
“No. I don’t think so. Yusuke and Kayko are made for each oth- EEK!” Yukina’s sentence was cut short as a light flashed outside and thunder came after it, so powerful it shook the house.
Kurama frowned as he looked out the open window into the moon lit sky as the heaven’s seemed to have opened up. Hiei wasn’t back yet…
“Oh Yukina-san! You’re afraid of lightning? Here- I’ll protect you from the evil lightning!” Kuwabara had gotten up from his position on the floor the moment he had sensed Yukina was afraid and now had his arms wrapped around her shoulders, her head leaning on his chest.
Yukina giggled lightly and made herself cozy in her savior’s arms. “Thanks Kuwa”
Kuwabara could only beam.
Botan smiled at the scene on her right as she watched her friend smile in the warmth of her love. She even smiled when the voices from the Kitchen were silenced. They had made-up… at least for now. Botan merely sighed and relaxed into the couch more. All her friends had solved their problems… but what about hers?
“Botan- san, what is on your mind? You seem troubled?
Botan jerked out of her thoughts at the sound of her name and found a pair of lush forest green eyes locked with hers. A faint red painted her cheeks. “Oh nothing Kurama- san. Just worried about work…. Hey... where is Hiei?”
“Who shrimp? I think he left before you three had left for shopping. I hope he got smashed by a truck…”
“Kuwa!”
“Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m still alive and breathing.” A cold menacing voice came form the now open window. A very, very wet Hiei now stood there, shaking his head and body like a dog to get the rain off. He eventually took off his coat and laid it on a nearby chair.
His hard gaze was now on his sister in the idiot’s arms.
Yukina ignored her, un- beknownest to her; brother’s glare and continued with a smile on her face. “Good Evening Hiei- san. I’m sure Kuwabara- Chan didn’t mean what he said…”
Kuwabara rolled his eyes as Hiei’s eyes softened by the voice of his sister. He turned form her and closed the window.
“Hn”
“Hey Hiei” Yusuke announced as he entered the living room, his girlfriend trailing behind him, her hair in every which not direction.
Botan sent Kurama and Yukina a knowing look which they returned. The poor idiot was left out of their secret conversation.
“Hey Kayko, you look like you need a brush.”
“Kuwabara!” Yusuke shot his friend a dirty look while he pulled the blushing Kayko into his lap.
“Yusuke!” Kayko protested the position. Yusuke sent her a look that clearly said ‘stay’. Which resulted in a large red hand print on his face.
Botan winced as Kayko crawled off the whimpering Yusuke and into a seat next to Botan. “Hump!”
Lightning struck again as the seven friends fell into a comfortable silence.
Hiei’s eyes narrowed as he saw his sister cling to the idiot’s body as if it were a light preserver. He only smirked and pulled her body closer to his, if that was even possible.
The gang had gathered at Yusuke’s house every night since last Monday. Koenma had given them a rare week off as a small vacation. It was during the summer also so the seven friends were rarely away from each other. If it were quite possible, they had become even closer in the past years. Yusuke Kuwabara and Kurama where going into their last year of High school along with Kayko. They each knew their lives were taking different directions and each of them wanted to spend as much time with each other as possible. Well… except Hiei. He was still working off his jail time but did, in his own rare ways, show that he cared for them.
“Wanna play a game?” Yusuke suggested.
“Sure. What do you have?” Kurama asked as he stood up to get another glass of water.
“Uh… I dunno…”
“Well that helps us out a lot Urameshi”
“Hey! I don’t see you getting off your lazy ass to do anything!” Yusuke snapped back at his friend.
“Oh you’re just jealous cause my girlfriend wants to sit with me!”
“Oh you’re dead!”
Yusuke lunged at Kuwabara who had abandoned Yukina.
“EE!” Yukina gave a frightened gasp as Botan pulled her back out of harms way as the boys met each other, hands around each others throats, and fell to the ground in a tumble.
“OW! Watch the face Urameshi!”
“Watch it! I can barley stand to listen to the words coming out of it!”
“Oh that’s i-“
“DING DONG!”
Yusuke stopped mid punch as he sat up on Kuwabara’s chest and released his hold on his neck when Kuwabara shoved him off.
“Who the hell would be at the door at THIS time of night… and with THAT weather?!” Botan exclaimed.
“I didn’t know you had another girlfriend Urameshi” Hiei smirked as he looked out the window to see a young girl about Yusuke’s age leaning against the door.
“SAY WHAT?!?!” Kayko exploded before Yusuke could defend himself.
“Relax Kayko, probally just the wrong house…” Yusuke said while glaring at Hiei.
“Hn”
The door bell rang again and Yusuke stood up and walked towards the door.
“Keep your shirt on, I’m coming!”
Yusuke whipped open the door, only to have the stranger on the other side collapse into his arms. “HEY! What’s the big deal?!” Yusuke went to drop the girl when he saw a small red puddle underneath her.
“Kurama! Quick she’s hurt!” Yusuke quickly placed the girl on the carpet of his living room and kicked the door shut. Long blue hair fell over the girl’s face.
“Yusuke do you know who she is?” Kurama questioned as he pushed the girl’s hair out of her face and felt her wrist. He was glad to feel a faint throb… but she was cold. Ice cold.
Yusuke couldn’t answer. He could only stare at the girl’s face. Behind him he could hear the murmurings and the faint sobs of the girls. He could hear the words of comfort Kuwabara was trying to say to the girl’s as they all clung together. It couldn’t be her. It just couldn’t be…
“Arya…”
The name was foreign to his lips… to his brain… it couldn’t be her. His eyes took in her bloody and beat up body. It couldn’t be her… not like this.
“Yusuke? Are you O.K?” Kurama asked the poor boy as Yusuke had seemingly frozen. Yusuke shook his head.
“Kayko!”
Kayko looked up from the group of girls and at Yusuke. “W...What?” She managed out.
“Come look at the girls face…” Yusuke trailed off.
Confusion flickered across Kayko’s face as her eyes trailed down to the only part of the girl’s body not covered in blood or by an article of clothing. She gasped as a hand flew up to her mouth and she sunk to her knees. “Arya!”
Yusuke shook his head. “So I’m not going crazy…”
“So you do know the girl?” Kurama asked as he opened her eyes to check for dilation.
Yusuke shook his head ‘yes’ and took her hand in his. It was still Ice Cold. Like it always used to be.
“Yes… she lived across from Kayko when we were little. She was our play mate…. She went to school with us. I haven’t seen her since I was 14. A week before I died for the first time… she had dropped out of school to go live with her boyfriend. It’s a long story…”
Kurama looked up, but did not ask. “C’mon we need to get her medical attention… help me put her on the couch.” Together Yusuke and Kurama placed her on the couch.
Kayko quickly ran to her side and brushed the long blue hair out of the girl’s face. “Arya…” She whispered as she took her hand in hers.
Kurama quickly went over her wounds. “Looks like she has a stab wound in her lower abdomen… missed all vital organs…. She has a concussion that’s for sure. Other then that, looks like just small scrapes cuts and burns…Yukina? Botan? Do you think you could?”
Kayko looked up hopefully at her two friends. They both smile and placed their hands above the girl’s body. “Any friend of Kayko is a friend of ours…” A small blue light filled the girl’s body. Yukina and Botan stepped back.
“That’s not our doing…”
Kayko gasped as the girl began to defy the laws of gravity and float in above the couch, her body encased by blue light.
Kurama gasped. “She’s healing herself…”
“Hn. She’s an Ice Mage”
Everyone in the room took there eye’s off the girl and focused at Hiei who had thrown a small bag and a sword at there feet.
“These were left outside. She holds the sword of a Mage and has the looks and skills of an Ice Apparition… Yukina you can feel it also, can you not?” Hiei said and then re-treated to his window sill, his part said and done.
The gang turned back to the girl, her wounds healed and bloodless.
Arya was dressed in a yellow tank top that was trimmed with blue. A red ring ran around it around her waist. A gash was made across the shirt so her belly was showing. She had regular blue jeans on and no shoes. She wore no make-up and a yellow hair tie was fitted into her hair.
Slowly, the larger then normal eyes of the girl began to open. Blue ocean depths filled with confusion stared back at Yusuke and Kayko and Arya gasped. “Yusuke? Kayko!” Arya jumped up from her seat and wrapped her arms around her lost friend’s neck.
“Ah! I haven’t seen you guys in soooo long!”
Yusuke smiled as he hugged his friend back and murmured hello’s and waited while Kayko and the girl hugged. He looked back at Botan Yukina and Kuwabara who were standing off to the side.
“Yusuke?” He turned to Arya.
“Hm?”
“I guess you wanna know why I’m here…. Right?” He nodded.
“Alright… but after I’m done you have to introduce me to your friends K? And him.” Arya said smiling, and pointing to Hiei.
Hiei raised an eyebrow as the girl pointed to him.
“Hn”
“Alright deal.” Everyone sat down around Arya, even Hiei turned in his seat so he could watch Arya. Even though he would never admit it out loud, the girl was interesting. Even what was more interesting, she had a mind block. A POWERUL mind block.
Hiei watched with interest as the girl talked animally with her hands.
His gaze drifted to the sword. The girl was very interesting, and she was Anything but ordinary. Hiei smirked, and his gaze returned to the girl as she began her tail.
“Aha! This is the life! No school, no work, no demons…” Yusuke Urameshi exclaimed to his best friend, Kuwabara, as he relaxed on the living room couch, beer in hand.
