Chapter Four
The smile that plastered Koenma's face as his favorite team walked in, dropped as he caught sight of the small girl following the gang.
It would be just his dumb luck...
"Alright binky breath, according to our contract we're not suppose to see you till next week. We're on vacation remem-"
"Yes, yes Yusuke. How could I forget? Unless Botan delivered my summons wrong, I only wished to see Arya. You are the ones who followed." Koenma cut Yusuke off as surprise crossed Yusuke's face.
Kuwabara promptly burst out laughing.
"Ha, Urameshi just got told by a toddler!"
"Shut it, Kuwabara." Yusuke shot a look at Kuwabara and then looked back at Koenma. "Fine whatever. I'll wait outside for you Arya. You guys can return to the house if you want to since I'm guessing we don't need to be here..." Yusuke directed this last comment to his fellow teammates.
Hiei was the first to leave, followed by Kurama and Kuwabara. As Yusuke went to go leave, he stopped infront of Arya who had a pleasant smile on her face.
"Hey, remember you are talking to my boss." He put a hand on her shoulder in a playful manner.
Arya's smile widened as she giggled. "Don't worry. I won't say anything embarrassing about you. Oh and uh.. you don't have to wait for me. I'm pretty sure Botan will be able to take me back to the house, if that's alright with you?"
Yusuke shrugged. "If it's alright with Botan. I'm sure Kayko wants to see me as much as possible before the vacation is up..." The mock egoism was excadurated in his voice.
"Sure you keep thinking that Yusuke" Arya laughed as she shoved Yusuke out the door, closely followed by Botan.
"I'll just wait outside for you" Botan then gave Arya a wink and closed the grand doors, leaving Arya and the Prince of Spirit World alone.
Arya turned and faced the toddler. A sarcastic smile on her face.
For awhile neither of them spoke, but instead seemed to be sizing each other up. Koenma was the first to break the silence.
"Arya was it?"
Arya nodded.
"Nice name... Anyways, down to business. Botan had informed me of how you had ended up at Yusuke's last night and told me of your amazing recovery. It would seem you are a experienced healer and a skilled one at that. We seem to be running short on healers and I was wondering if you would like to consider working as an on team healer?"
Arya smiled at the question. "You mean like, go with the team on cases and heal them and stuff like that?"
Koenma nodded.
Arya put a finger to her chin and seemed to think for a bit before nodding.
"Sure. That sounds great. So I guess that makes me part of the team right?" Arya smiled as she seemed to perk up.
Koenma let out a sigh of relief. Maybe Arya just didn't know...
"Yes of course. Arya, let me be the first to welcome you to Team Urameshi. Since the team is on vacation this week, I have no cases for you or the team so I will see you next week sometime. You are dismissed."
Arya's smile widened at that. "Of course."
Koenma gulped noisily as Arya turned on her heel and exited through out the doors to where he could hear his soon-to-be-wife talking to Arya.
He lowered his head on to his desk after taking a deep breath. This was not good. He knew alone Arya was nothing, he could easily surpass her power. But if she told... if Hiei found out... together their power was enough to throw his dad off the throne. Maybe putting her on the team was a bad idea...
Koenma raised his head. There was always the possibility that she didn't hold hard feelings, or that she just didn't know and that maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't tell Hiei and Spirit World would continue to function.
Koenma scoffed.
Koenma had just about as much as a snowball's chance in hell.
"George!"
"Yes, sir?"
"Bring me the files on the Koorime and Fire Mages. All of them."
"Sir?"
"JUST DO IT!"
"So what did Koenma want to see you about?"
Yusuke asked Arya as her and Botan walked through the front door to the rest of the gang, minus Kuwabara Yukina and Kayko. They had gone shopping. Kuwabara of course being there simply because Yukina was there.
Botan beat Arya to answer. "Arya is officially part of Team Urameshi!"
Kurama and Yusuke looked up in surprise. "What?"
Arya laughed lightly. "I'm only going to be the on team healer so I'll just go with you guys during cases to heal you and stuff like that and fight if necessary."
"Now the question is can you fight? If I remember correctly you couldn’t throw a left hook if your life depended on it" Yusuke joked.
Arya shrugged. "I'm better with my sword and magic if need be... also with the ice powers too, so I'm pretty sure I can hold my own. Ryu taught me a few things"
A look of distaste crossed Yusuke's face at the mention of Ryu. "I always hated that guy..."
A forlorn look came over Arya's face. "Yes well... people aren't always what they seem to be now are they Yusuke?"
Yusuke scoffed. "Ryu isn't human. He's a demon."
Arya shrugged. "Yeah, so? Kurama's a demon also and look at him."
"Kurama's different""But the point still holds."
Yusuke rolled his eyes. He could not believe Arya was sticking up for her Ex. Especially after what he did to her. Yusuke shuddered as he remembered last night when Arya turned up at his door.
"Alright whatever... So what do you guys want to do today? I wanted to go down to the arcade."
"Oh, sorry Yusuke. Koenma has some stuff for me to do. I'm going to have to bail." Botan said as an apologetic smile came over her face.
Yusuke shrugged. "Eh. Kurama? Arya, Hiei? What about you guys?"
"Count me in"
"Hn"
"OH! I haven't been there in sooooo long!"
Yusuke smiled as he saw a light sparkle in Arya's eyes. One that was rarely seen, even after so many years. Happiness.
"Alright we're off then. We'll stop by the mall in bout an hour and pick up the girls and Kuwabara. Botan will you be able to come down tonight?" Yusuke asked as he threw his jacket on the table seeing as how it was summer.
Botan looked down at her feet and murmured something about Koenma before she gave them a hearty wave and smile and disappeared out the door on her oar.
Yusuke shook his head. There was something different about Botan lately. She wasn't her usual cheery self.
"Does anyone notice a change in Botan? She's like not herself anymore" Yusuke stated as the four of them walked out the door and onto to the sidewalk. Well three at least. Hiei was taking the trees.
Arya shook her head. "I don't know her well enough to know if she was off or anything. Maybe Kurama would know"
Kurama looked down at the girl walking beside him. She had said that sentence with so much innocence, no one would guess what she was hinting at, but one look in the deep blue sea eyes, told him there was more to Arya then she let on. It also told him Arya knew more then she let on. Maybe he would have to be careful around this one.
Kurama shrugged and averted his eyes to the blurring shadow in the trees.
"Yes. I have noticed that she has been a bit off lately. Probably because Koenma-san seems to be overworking her. Nothing to worry about I suppose" Kurama easily lied as he bit back the venom he wanted to dish out as he said Koenma's name.
"Yeah, I guess your right. I'll ask her about it next time she visits."
Kurama eyed the black blur once more until he felt the small connection Hiei had made with him in his mind.
"...Hiei?"
"What is it fox-boy?"
"Arya... I think you should keep an eye on her. She seems to know more then she lets on"
"Hn. You think I haven't noticed that already? Please give me more credit then that"
"Well you seem quite content with her this morning..."
Kurama smirked as he heard mild cursing coming form the trees.
"Do not mention that ever again, or you will find yourself without the ability to speak"
"Mention what?"
"Hn."
"So does that mean you'll keep an eye on her?"
"...I've already tried to get into her mind. She has one powerful mind block. Apparently Ryu, or whatever his name is, has a Jagan and had put a permanent mind block on her"
"That's really powerful isn't it?"
"What do you think?"
"Your awfully quite Kurama. What is Hiei saying?"
"Hm?" Kurama broke the connection with Hiei to turn to the smiling Arya that was looking up at him with a grin on her face.
"I said you were being awfully quite and asked what Hiei was saying" Curiosity filled the girl's eyes as the smile on her face turned into one of mischief.
"How in the world did you know Kurama was talking to Hiei?" Yusuke exclaimed as they turned the corner onto the street where the arcade was.
"I have my ways... OH! Look! There it is! Race ya!"
"Hey! No fair" Yusuke shouted as he tore down the street after Arya.
Hiei landed next to Kurama as he stared off at Arya.
"There's something about her I just can't put my finger on..." Kurama stated as he looked at his fire demon friend.
"Hn. It wouldn't have at all to do with the fact that she is just about as mysterious as shadow in darkness would it?"
Kurama raised his eyebrows. "Ya know... that just might be it"
"HA! I completely ROCK at this game, Yusuke! There is no way you could beat me!"
"Yeah yeah... that's what you said about the last one"
Yusuke shook his head as Arya lead him over to a two player DDR floor. For the last 45 minutes she had played him at every game, and he had hands down beaten her. She was determined to show him that she could beat him at something.
Meanwhile, Kurama and Hiei were currently occupying a table off to the side. Kurama had not taken his eyes off of the girl since they had entered the arcade. She was just like every other girl in there. Maybe a bit more energetic, but more or less the same. The smile always lit up her face and a cute pout would appear when Yusuke would beat Arya at a game. Then a few seconds later she would spot another game and the smile would return. There was nothing dark or mysterious about her as there had been just awhile ago. There was just something about this girl... that made him wonder. He had only gotten this feeling once, and only once before. When he had met Hiei.
Kurama turned to his left where the fire demon sat, arms crossed over his chest, his hard glare on the girl who was now currently whipping butt at DDR.
Hiei glared at the girl that taunted him. She intrigued him to no end. And god, was it annoying. He wished she would just leave, disappear, go away. But no matter how hard he pushed his will, every time he blinked, she was still there. But at the same time, he was glad she was still there.
Hiei closed his eyes. Okay, so glad was pushing it. Maybe... content... yes he was content, with her being in his presence.
Hiei opened his eyes just in time to see Arya jump from her platform waving her arms in the air and a large smile on her face. She had won. Secretly, Hiei wished Yusuke would have beat her. That pout was just to cute...
"HN"
Kurama raised an eyebrow as Hiei went off into an even grumpier mood. Kurama saw that he had not taken his gaze off of the same girl the whole time. Kurama shed a smile.
"HEY! There they are!"
Kurama glanced over his shoulder to see Kuwabara, Yukina and Kayko running up behind him.
"Hey guys. Where's Yusuke and Arya?" Kayko asked, 2 mall bags in each hand.
"Kayko? Oh hey we were just going to head over to get you guys. Whatd' cha get?" Yusuke asked as Arya pulled out a seat at the table and sat down.
Kayko smirked. "Me to know and you to find out."
"Oh c'mon Kayko"
"Later Yusuke.
"Kayko..."
"LATER"
Arya let out a giggle. "Are you sure you guys are going out?"
Yusuke smacked Arya on the shoulder. "Eh. You don't have any room to say anything since you aren't dating so watch your mouth."
"What ever Yusuke. I'm hungry. Can we get something to eat?"
Yusuke then got up and went to go get snacks, Kayko trailing behind.
"So did you get anything Yukina?" Arya asked pleasantly.
"No. I'm afraid they had nothing in my size. Do you like shopping at the mall?"
"Not as much as Kayko I'm afraid."
Yukina nodded. "Yes she is just a little... obsessed."
The two girls then shared a smile and burst into small giggles.
Kuwabara rolled his eyes. "Girls. Never going to understand them"
Kurama smirked. "Your not suppose to Kuwabara"
Hiei rolled his eyes over to the still giggling Arya.
"That may be, Kurama, but Arya pushes the point"
The smile that plastered Koenma's face as his favorite team walked in, dropped as he caught sight of the small girl following the gang.
It would be just his dumb luck...
