Chapter 1

A Dance in Shadows

“I'll put everything up,” Kaida volunteers. The dark-haired, violet-eyed girl smiles at the teacher. Ms. Kendra is the only person in the world who knows her secret. Kaida can still sing, though she tells everyone that she lost her singing voice in a car crash a few years back.

“All right, just don't stay too long,” Ms. Kendra says, smiling knowingly at the teen.

“Yes, ma'am,” Kaida says. She and Ms. Kendra are the only two in the performance hall. Ms. Kendra leaves the teen to her volunteered work. Yes, her school has a performance hall. And dozens of other things you normally wouldn't expect to find in a school. Such as a skate rink and bowling alley. Very weird school she attends.

Kaida starts putting up the talent show props and stuff. Soon, all that is left is the microphone and the boombox. She smiles. She pulls a homemade CD out of her purse. She places it in the boombox and picks a track. Soon, the music to a beautiful BSB song floats through the air. She walks up to the microphone. She closes her eyes and begins to sing.

“I don't know/What he does to make you cry/But I'll be there to make you smile/I don't have a fancy car/To get to you/I'd walk a thousand miles

I don't care/If he buys you nice things/Does his gifts come from the heart?/I don't know/But if you were my girl/I'd make it so we'd never be apart.”

---In a hall nearby---

Kurama is taking the long way to the parking lot, which takes him right by performance hall. He hears someone's beautiful voice float through the air from the performance hall. `Isn't the talent show try-outs supposed to be over?' he thinks, walking to the door to figure out what is going on.

He gently opens the door and steps through. When he looks at the stage, he is very surprised to see Kaida. Kaida is in his math, science, and history classes. Many students ask her to sing, but she says she has lost her singing voice in a car crash she was in a few years ago.

Yet, there she was, pouring her heart out into a beautiful ballad. He recognizes the ballad as a beautiful song by a popular boy band.

---With Kaida---

Kaida's eyes stay closed as she continues to pour her soul into the music. She feels strong arms wrap around her thin waist, but blames it on the cigarettes that she had before coming here. She normally doesn't smoke, but she wasn't in the mood to come here, so she silenced her mood with the cigarettes.

She finished singing the song, but kept her eyes closed. She really didn't want to lose the tranquility in her mind. Singing always makes her mind more tranquil. She just stood there as the next song started up. It was another nice ballad. This time, Brittany Spears' voice came over the speakers. The song is “Sometimes”.

“You tell me you're in/Love with me//Like you can't take/Your pretty eyes away/From me

“It's not that I don't/Want to stay/But every time you/Come too close I/Move away

“I wanna believe in/Everything you say/Cause it sounds/So good.”

Kaida sings to this song as well.

But if you really want/Me, move slow/There's things about/Me you just have/To know

Sometimes I run/Sometimes I hide/Sometimes I'm scared/Of you/But all I really want/Is to hold you tight/Treat you right, be with/You day and night/Baby, all I need is time.”

---Kurama---

Kurama is surprised when Kaida starts to sing the next song as well. He keeps his arms wrapped loosely around her waist. Then she starts to sway slightly, really getting into the song. Her voice is so soft and lonely. It is as if her singing is her way of releasing a deep sadness. Her soft dark hair shifts slightly on her neck and shoulders, and he sees something that makes his blood turn to ice. There is a very old bullet wound right below her neck on her left shoulder.

After a few more minutes, the song ends. She just stays there, her eyes closed.

---Kaida---

She just stands still, not wanting to lose the feeling of safety. She had expected for the feeling of arms around her waist to disappear. But they hadn't. “You are never alone,” a gentle voice whispers in her ear. “I'll always be there for you, no matter what.”

She freezes slightly, and snaps her lilac eyes open. Only to find no one and the arms gone. She sighs. She thinks for a second. She goes to get her CD out of the player and puts it away. She is about to leave, when something stops her. She turns back to the seemingly empty performance hall. “Thank you, whoever you are. I needed the confidence boost. And please don't tell anyone about my voice,” she says, smiling slightly. With that, she slips out the door and leaves.

---Kurama---

Kurama is slightly surprised by his own actions, and is more surprised by her words of gratitude. He smiles slightly. He won't tell. He sees her smile light up her beautiful face. He steps out of the shadows and leaves the performance hall as well.
