Sorrow

Chapter One: New Surroundings, Same Problems

"Aiko, you have to get up, it's three in the morning! It's your first day of school! Do you really want to be late?" A firm, irritated voice permeated your door and percolated into your skull.

"Yes, right now I want to sleep!" You shouted at your mother. You snatched a pillow that had fallen on the floor and slammed it over your face, successfully drowning out all other sounds, with the exception of your muffled breathing.

"Why the hell do you have to be so damned difficult?" Your mother inquired forcefully as she snatched the pillow from your face and started to hit you hard with it.

"Aright! I'm up!" You snapped as you crawled out of bed and walked out of your room. Actually, it was more of a closet with a cot stuffed in the corner of it. You went to the bathroom, took a shower, (a/n: I seem to like showers don't I? Oh well, they make people clean, and more people could stand to be clean *cough cough Jessica Bradshaw cough cough*) then returned to your room. You walked over to a small box that held all of your clothes, and dug through it. After a few minutes of searching, you pulled on a pair of jeans, a black bra, and a black tank top. You finger-combed your shoulder-length black and ice blue hair, lined your eyes in black, then marched out to the kitchen and sat in a chair with a black trench coat draped over it.

"What do you want?" Your mother asked.

"What do you mean?" You asked, your tired brain still trying to make sense of everything.

"What do you want for- oh never mind, you get toast and that's it." She snapped at you as she busied herself with the toaster.

"No lunch?" You asked, not sure what you had done to piss her of this time.

"Aiko, don't ask questions- better yet, don't talk at all." She barked as she threw the toast down in front of you.

"Yes ma'am." You said as you took a bite out of the toast. After five minutes of uncomfortable silence between the two of you, you grabbed the trench coat off the back of the chair and your backpack, then advanced towards the door.

"Do you know your way?" You mother asked doubtfully, it sounded like she could care less.

"No. I know the general direction though." You stated as you walked out the door. You walked to the bus stop and waited. To kill time, you took a notebook out and started to write. (a/n: There's a quantum leap for you all huh? ^_~) After about ten minutes of poetry writing, the bus pulled up. You paid the fee and found a seat at the very back of the bus, where you continued writing your poetry:

It all feels the same,

It's just a new location,

It will all turn out the same,

Why do they bother?

I can't figure all of this out,

The parts that I can unmask,

They all make me want to heave,

Is this another pathetic attempt to `save' my soul?

I wish I knew,

But I don't.

"Sarasaki High School." The bus driver called out. You stood up and waited for the doors to open.

"Thanks." You mumbled as you hopped of the bus and wandered up the path to the school. You walked through the glass doors and into the office.

"Umm, yes, can I help you dear?" An elderly woman asked. There was skepticism etched all over her ancient lined face.

"Yes, my name is Aiko Kyushi. I'm new here…." Your voice trailed off under the harsh gaze of the woman.

"Oh yes, I remember now. You are going to need a school uniform," She glanced over your outfit and shook her head. You just kept your head up, waiting for her to finish. " You will also need the course books, follow me." She lead you to a spare room and fitted you with the blue and yellow uniform and gave you the books for your classes. As you changed into the uniform the lady said, "You can come by the office after school is out and reclaim your other……………clothes."

"Fine." You said when you came out of the bathroom. You fidgeted with the skirt, something that you were not used to.

"Your homeroom teacher is Mr. Indra (a/n: I bug you guys with a lot of these, but humor me. I don't know the teacher's real name, so this is my alternative ^_*), you will join your class in room 456." The attendant stated and then ushered you out of the office. You wandered around the halls looking for your classroom for about five minutes until a teacher walked up to you and asked what you were doing out of class. You told her that you were new and to make matters worse you were lost.

"What class are you looking for?" She asked you kindly.

"Mr. Indra in room 456." You stated monotonously.

"Ok, I'll show you where that is." She started off down the hall, and you followed unquestioningly. About thirty seconds later you were in front of room 456's door, watching the lady wander off to do whatever it was she was going to do before you distracted her. You took a deep, calming breath and knocked on the door.

"Please come in, you must be Aiko Kyushi." Said a brunette male. You nodded your head and stepped inside the classroom. "Class, may I have your attention?" The class seemed to be made of what looked like students that could really give a shit if they passed in school or not. For the most part however, they did quiet down.

"Hey Indra, who's the hottie?" A random boy shouted from the back of the room.

"Haruko! Don't be disrespectful!" The teacher said harshly, the student drew back under the severe gaze of the teacher. "This is Aiko Kyushi, she just moved here from America." The class murmured for a moment, "You may take a seat next to Haruko." The teacher pointed to the only open seat, in the back next to the fool that had insulted you.

`Just my luck, I'd have to sit next to the biggest baka in the class.' You nodded and made your way to your seat.

"Hey hot stuff, what are you doing after school?" He asked as Mr. Indra continued to teach the students that actually were paying attention.

"Don't talk to me, and you will get to keep your face intact." You hissed.

"Does that mean you'll go out with me?" He was pushing all the right buttons to make your anger flare.

"Have you ever heard of Picasso?" You asked, and he nodded. "Do you remember what some of the faces that he painted looked like?" Again the kid nodded. "If you keep talking, you will end up looking like one of those guys, do you understand me?" The look on his face told you that he got the message loud and clear. After about twenty minutes of listening to the teacher drone on and trying not to get drooled on you raised your hand.

"Yes, miss Kyushi. Do you have a question?" Mr. Indra asked you.

"May I use the restroom?" You asked politely.

"Yes you may." He said then continued teaching as you removed yourself from your desk and walked back into the empty halls. Of course you had no intention of going to the restroom, you had seen a lovely little sign that had pointed to some stairs and said `roof' on it, so you headed that way. You sighed heavily as you pushed the door open and walked out into the light breeze. You went to center of the roof and sat down, all the while the wind played with your hair and skirt, making them flutter about you. This was the way you liked things, when you were alone. You heard the door to the roof open and turn to see who it was, not that it would make much of a difference anyways-you didn't know anybody here.

"Sorry, I thought I was the only one that came up here to get away from the shit down there." A kid in a green uniform stated, jerking his thumb to the door behind him. He had slicked back black hair that held a slight green tinge to it because of all the hair gel that he used. You shrugged and retuned your attention to the sky. A few seconds later you felt him sit down next to you. "So, are you new?" He questioned you. Your gaze fell off of the sky and fixed itself on his dark chocolate eyes.

"Yeah, I just moved here." You said, amazed that somebody was talking to you without commenting on your looks.

"Oh, that's nice." You shrugged, it didn't feel `nice', "If you aren't busy after school, would you like to hang out with me and a friend of mine and we could do our homework together?" He asked you kindly.

"Why?" You asked, your defense apparatus kicking in full power.

"I just said, so that we could do our homework." He stated.

"But you don't even know my name. And why would you invite me to your friend's house?" You were thoroughly confused now. The boy just sighed.

"Well, let's get the name thing over with, my name is Yusuke Urameshi. What's yours?" He asked, hell of a time to pick for pleasantries.

"My name is Aiko Kyushi. Now that just leaves the question of why would you invite me to your friend's house." You said civilly, even though being civil isn't your best trait.

"I invited you because first of all, you are new, and second, I know what it is like to be lonely." He said thoughtfully.

"Who said I was lonely?" You asked cynically.

"Your eyes." He stated as he turned his head away from the sky to look into your frosty ice blue eyes.

"Damn, they are always the things that let me down..." You said in a frigid tone.

"It's a simple yes or no question, do you want to come over?" He said as if he hadn't even heard your last comment.

"Alright, I guess I could do that." You whispered, still a little hesitant. Just then something enigmatic made your senses tingle, and Yusuke seemed to have noticed it too. "What was that?" You inquired softly.

"You felt that?" Yusuke asked dumbfounded.

"Yes, now I want to know what it is." You stood up and turned around and ran into a something. "Ow." You stated as you picked yourself up again, this time taking a second to look around you before moving.

"Baka ningen onna, watch where the hell you're going." A male voice snapped. The voice belonged to a figure that was dressed from head to toe in black. He had black spiked hair that sported a white starburst, and a white bandanna was securely tied around his forehead.

"I'll walk where I want to when I want to, so back off Shorty!!" You hissed furiously.

"Hehe, Hiei, this is Aiko. Aiko, this is Hiei." Yusuke broke in, "What's up?" He asked the black-clad figure.

"Kurama's house after school." The person named Hiei said, then in a blink of an eye, he was gone.

"I hate when he pulls that shit." Yusuke mumbled, then turned to you. "Aiko, do you think that we could postpone the homework session?" He turned to you.

"Yeah sure. I should have known, this always happens." You snap, then storm off towards the steps.

"Aiko wait, I didn't mean it like that, it's just that this is very important." He said as he caught up to you and grabbed you by your wrist.

"Touch me again, and I'll make sure that you never have any children." You hiss, every word dripping with viscous toxic poison.

"Fine you can come." Yusuke growled, caving in.

"What?" You asked, forgetting that Yusuke's hand was still around your wrist.

"You can still come with me." He said, loosening his grip.

"But…what about…I…Hiei…umm…" You were silenced by Yusuke's finger touching your lips.

"Let me handle it. If you want, we could ditch and get the hell out of this shit-hole." Yusuke said hopefully.

"Thank the gods, lets get out of here!" You gasp at your newfound friend.

"I was hoping you'd say that." He winked at you, then the both of you walked down the stairs and out of the school. You followed Yusuke to a nice apartment complex.

"Why the hell is she here?" A familiar voice sounded from somewhere above you. You turned around and looked up into the tree you were standing next to, and sure enough Hiei was sitting in the branches of it, glaring down at you. You glared back at him.

"I invited her here Hiei." Yusuke said.

"Hello. I assume from all of the fighting, Botan didn't tell you that Aiko would be joining us, did she Hiei?" Another male voice sounded from behind you. You whipped around to face amazingly bright emerald eyes glinting down on you like scintillating jewels. The bearer of those miraculous jewels had silky crimson locks that flitted across his face when the wind wafted around them. You were going to ask how he knew your name, but you were trapped inside that pair of emerald pools. Your thoughts were shattered into a million pieces when Hiei spoke.

"Hn." Hiei mumbled. "Are you going to let us in fo-" Hiei started but was silenced by a glare from the redhead

"Please follow me, and everything will be explained shortly." The red-haired beauty stated, seeing the confused look plastered upon your face. Everybody followed him up the stairs and into his apartment, where a toddler with coffee colored eyes and hair with a blue pacifier stuck in his mouth and a large hat placed on top of his head sat next to a young woman that had bubble-gum blue hair, violet eyes, and a pink kimono.

"Hello, my name is Botan!!!!!! It's very nice to meet you!!!!!! I'm the ferry girl" The bubble-gum blue haired girl bounded up from the couch and quickly advanced towards you with her hand outstretched. You looked confusedly at her, "The Grim Reaper." She said with a wink.

"Ummmm, my name is Aiko………." Your voice faltered as Botan quickly hugged you. Dumbfounded, you stood there like a porcelain doll. Yusuke started cracking up, the redhead smiled gently, and Hiei just stood there.

"My name is Shuuiichi Minamino, but you may call me Kurama. Everybody else here does." The redhead stated as he waved a hand around the room, indicating all the other people in the room. "And I believe you know Hiei?" He asked as he pointed to the figure standing in the darkest shadow he could find, you nodded slightly and Hiei continued to glare at you.

"My name is Koenma." The toddler stated clearly, apparently he had had practice talking around the blue mass stuck in his face.

"Hey, I've seen you before!" You declared as you pointed at the kid. Everybody except for Botan and Koenma did a double take. Even Hiei twitched a little.

"WHAT???" Yusuke asked, a bewildered expression painted across his face.

"Yeah, it was in a dream. He told me that I would be brought here, that I had something important to do. Something that could save a whole bunch of people and worlds from obliteration." You stated as you looked around the room, just then there was a loud knock on the door.

"I'll get it." The one named Kurama said. He walked to the door and opened it, allowing a tall oafish person with the most ugly hair and face you had ever seen (WFW: *gets pummeled by Kuwabara lovers* I'M SORRY!!!!!!! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE, GET AWAY FROM ME!!!!!!!). His hair was a burnt-orange and done up like he was done up like he was an Elvis impersonator or something of the sort, but his eyes held honesty and honor.

"I'm..…..so…..sorry……I'm……. late……" He gasped, without a doubt he had been running. He caught a glimpse of you and ran to kneel before you. He started sprouting sonnets and asking you to marry him. "Hey baby, would you marry me please, I think that my world would crumble into a million slivers of glass, like a broken mirror, if you weren't in it!" He started to kiss your hand, leaving a wet film of saliva on it.

"What's your name." You said sweetly, though there was a cold, disgusted gleam in your eyes.

"The great Kazuma Kuwabara!" He stated, then went back to kissing your hand.

"Well Kuwabara, if you don't stop drooling on me, I will rip whatever brains you have out your eye sockets, then I will rip your larynx out and shove it up your ass." You stated harshly as you hit him square in the eye, causing him to fall back. Yusuke started to laugh hysterically again and you went to lean in a corner to get as far as humanly possible away from the whimpering mound. "Stupid fool, I didn't even hit him that hard." You mumble as you cross Hiei's path.

"Nice work." He said so only you could hear, you nodded vaguely to show that you had heard him, then continued on to your corner.

"Ok gang, now that introductions are complete, let's get on to business." The toddler spoke up.

"Oh yeah, I got so caught up in introducing Aiko that I didn't insult you properly. What the hell do you want pacifier breath?" Yusuke asked.

"Yusuke!" Out of nowhere, an oar comes crashing down on his head. "Don't talk to Koenma-sama that way!" Botan snapped, though she still held her cheery disposition.

"Owwwww! Botan, that hurts!" Yusuke stated as he held the top of his head.

"You were saying, Koenma?" Kurama asked respectfully.

"Oh yes, as I was saying. In a past life, Aiko was a very powerful demon that was very close to Kuronue, before he met Youko." He added at the look Kurama gave him. "She looks exactly as she did when she knew him." Koenma turned to you, "We need you to help the Tentei to capture him."

"Before I agree to do anything for people I only just met, what did this Kuronue do?" You ask Koenma skeptically, `This had better not be a prank that these people play on new kids.' You think to yourself.

"Kuronue has killed one of the top Rekai apparitions and stole very precious artifacts." Koenma stated clearly.

"And what exactly are these `artifacts'?" You inquire.

"The artifacts were a skull and spell book." Koenma sighed.

"And what the hell is so damn special about a skull and book that you need my help to get them back?" You asked angrily, you were getting tired of his enigmatic responses to all of your questions.

"The skull is a the center piece for a certain ritual called the Sacrament of Death, the two items will grant the one casting the spell will receive the power to raise the dead and bring their souls back. He plans on using the Ritual to revive your body and soul into its original state, before………" His voice trailed off.

"Before what?" You snap, "If it has something to do with me, I demand to know what the hell it is." Your voice went quiet and venomous.

"Well, you were brought into the Rekai court to face trial." He said. You glared at him, daring him to stop. "You were charged with the killing of six high ranking apparitions, and the theft of the Serpent's Eye and the Serpent's tongue. You were found guilty on all counts, and sentenced to death." When Koenma finished, the whole room was staring at you.

"Oh, that would explain why I was always looked at like I had committed a murder, because I committed six of them." You said lightly as you shrugged. "But why did I want the Serpent thingies?"

"When the Serpent's Eyes and Serpent's Tongue are combined, it gives the power to rule any and all of the worlds, to make them die or flourish at the holder's will." Koenma stated somberly.

"Well then….." You remarked, you always wondered where your obsession with death had come from, and as it turned out, it was your art.

"Well what?" Yusuke asked you in an exasperated tone.

"Nothing, I was just thinking about all of this." You remarked, your defensive shield coming into play again.

"Calm down Yusuke." Botan said gently as she looked at you. Yusuke sighed heavily, but said nothing.

"Calm down? You and Koenma really want us to take on another demon that could potentially kill us in our sleep?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!" Kuwabara shrieked hysterically as he wagged a finger at the ferry girl and Koenma.

"You should take a deep breath, if you worry about death too much, you could be meeting your maker a lot earlier then you would expect." You stated calmly as you turned your ice-like eyes to Kuwabara. "Then again, do us all a favor and keep worrying about it."

"Hn, the girl's got some attitude. I don't mind having her here." Hiei remarked from his shadowed corner.

"Gee thanks, Hiei." You say sardonically. For your smart retort, you earned yourself a sharp soul-piercing glare.

"Hiei." A voice said threateningly. You turned to see Kurama glaring at him.

"Hn." Hiei remarked, then retuned to being silent.

"I guess I don't really have anything better to do, so I might as well join you. Besides, I'm interested to see what's going to happen."
