Mistress Yami: This is what I'd like to call a teaser chapter, to see how many people are interested in it. If you are and I get a decent amount of reviews a new chapter will be coming your way. I'm not sure of the length, I try to vary it. I, personally, while I do enjoy long chapters, and hate really short ones, am not able to concentrate if it's got a mini-book in each chapter.
Chapter 1: Bye Bye Baby
It was a relatively calm day at Genkai's Temple. The Rekai Tantei were still recovering from their last mission. The team and friends were gathered inside the temple in the living room, chatting away joyfully unaware of the danger one of their team members was in. That person was Hiei.
Kuwabara still had bruises and wouldn't be much help, Yusuke had a broken arm and he could barely deliver a strong kick, and Kurama has some inner bleeding that was slowly but surely healing. Koenma had an urgent case and at the moment Hiei had seemed the only one able to go. It seemed that he had recovered from all of his injuries. Even thought it may have seemed that way he was still weak from unleashing the Black Dragon too many times in one week. He accepted the mission (not as if he really had any other choice) and left immediately. It had been two days since his departure.
Yukina and Keiko were busy in the kitchen cooking dinner when suddenly Yukina froze. Her body became rigid and she found that she couldn't move her body. Her eyes widened in shock and horror as her stomach knotted. She dropped the pan she had been holding and it fell down, spilling its contents, with a loud clang. The grease leaked out and spread across the kitchen floor seeping into the bottom of Yukina's kimono as well as her socks and Keiko's. As if a bullet shot from a gun everyone gathered in the kitchen. The sight they ran into on was Yukina sitting on her knees, a blank look in her eye, and Keiko shaking her shoulders lightly.
“Yukina, please say something,” Keiko pleaded shaking her friend more forcefully.
Seeing that Yukina wasn't reacting Kurama and Kuwabara rushed to their side. Kurama knelt in front of Yukina and moved his hand from side to side in front of her face trying to get a reaction from her.
“What's wrong with her?” Kuwabara asked frantically.
“I don't know. Yusuke lay Yukina down on the couch and Keiko get me a rag and water,” Kurama instructed slightly worried.
It was as if Yukina had gone into shock but it was for no good reason. Immediately everyone flew to their tasks. The one's left without one gathered around Yukina their worry growing with each passing second. As told Yusuke picked Ykina up, lifting her carefully as if he was handling fragile glass. He walked past the kitchen and into the living room where heplaced her small form on the green couch and covered her with the white blanket he had been handed. Keiko ran into the room soon after and gave Kurama the items he had requested.
Kurama knelt beside Yukina and soaked the rag, rung it out, and then caressed her face with the damp cloth. He repeated this process several times hoping that the water would revive her somewhat. After a few minutes which seemed each like its own eternity Yukina's eyes fluttered open. She sat up and looked at the others their faces mirroring her own.
“What happened Yukina?” Keiko asked leaning forward as if to check that Yukina was truly okay. .
“I know this sounds foolish but I have this awful feeling,” Yukina started. The others gathered closer.
“Well go on,” Yusuke encouraged.
“I don't know where my brother is...but I have an awful feeling that something has happened to him,” Yukina said as her small body started shaking. Pretty soon crystal tears slipped past her eyes. They dripped down her cheeks, then crystallized and fell onto her lap. From there they rolled do the floor and landed with a loud clatter. Keiko wrapped her arms around Yukina and let her cry on her shoulder.
“Silly isn't it,” Yukina said as she drew back from Keiko's embrace. With a sigh she moved herself from the couch and knelt as she picked up the tear gems that were glittering on the floor. Kurama and Yusuke looked at each other and stood up.
“Kuwabara we're leaving for Koenma's,” Yusuke said dragging the larger man with him.
“Did I say something wrong?” Yukina wondered tears threatening to spill again.
“I'm sorry Yukina, you did nothing wrong. We just happened to forget a meeting with Koenma,” Kurama explained bowing and exiting the room. Once outside Yusuke called Botan and asked her to come take them to Spirit World.
“Smooth lying,” Yusuke commented after he pocketed the communicator.
“I wouldn't exactly be proud of that,” Kurama said looking up at the sky for any sign of Botan. Not that the lie had been a good one but it had gone over with the girls unsettlingly well. The clouds parted in swirls as Botan rushed through them heading towards Genkai's temple. It had sounded like a real emergency when Yusuke had called her. She dipped down deeply and sent dust flying high as she stopped abruptly in front of the boys.
“Hello boys! Sorry about that,” she said smiling as they spit dust out or brushed their eyes.
“That's alright Botan,” Kurama said brushing off the dust that had landed on his shirt.
“Well how are we getting to Koenma's office?” Kuwabara asked.
Botan slid off her oar and dipped her hand into the pocked of her “uniform”. She reached around for a moment before a smile spread to her face. She made a show of pulling the object out of her pocket and smiled as she held out the small blue sphere.
“What's that?” Yusuke asked poking the small object so that it almost rolled off Botan's palm.
“Watch it Yusuke! This is the Portable Portal!” Botan exclaimed holding the ball so that they all got a good look at it.
“How does it work?” Kurama asked looking curiously at the round object.
Even though human he still had some lingering Yoko traits he could not get rid off. Like his secret obsession over shiny or round things, better yet shiny and round things. The Portable Portal qualified, in addition to that Kurama was curious by nature.
“You just throw it in the air and it will automatically open a portal to Koenma's office! It was specifically made for Rekai officers or messengers,” Botan explained displaying the Portable Portal with pride.
“Well then what are we waiting for?” Yusuke asked taking the ball out of Botan's hand and throwing it into the air. A few silent moments passed before a black circle appeared. It began as a small circle and a loud crack filled the air around them as it ripped a hole into space. It was creating large winds that were puling the trees around the temple into it. Then as if there was never any disturbance the wind stopped and everything became as calm as they were before. The portal glowed black with a few swirls of color inside of it.
“May I ask why you need to talk to Koenma?” Botan asked while pulling at the end of the portal. She reached her hand out and began to pull at it, rising on her oar every now and then to get some of the higher areas. She struggled with it for a few moments but eventually got it into a door shape.
“I'll tell you when we speak to Koenma,” Kurama explained stepping into the portal and not waiting for them, this was too important to linger around for. The others soon followed.
“Koenma we're here!” Botan chirped as they reached the other side of the portal inside of Koenma's office. She stopped and looked around seeming confused.
“What's wrong?” Kuwabara asked.
“I could've sworn that Koenma said he'd be waiting in his office,” Botan said looking around the office.
“Yo,” a voice behind them said.
Botan let out a squeak as she turned around her eyes wide and her hands over her heart. Yusuke and Kuwabara had had similar reactions.
“Don't do that Koenma!” Yusuke yelled down at his boss.
“So sorry to hear that, now I expect you're here because of Hiei,” Koenma said walking over to his large desk and seating himself in the chair.
“Yes we are. How did you know?” Kurama asked staring at the ruler of Rekai suspiciously.
“I had a feeling you would be here because of that….” Koenma said fumbling in his drawers.
“Yukina had a freeze over and said she thought there was something wrong with her brother,” Yusuke said glaring at Koenma.
“That's what I don't get. If Yukina said there was something wrong with her brother why are we checking on the shrimp?” Kuwabara asked confused. He had yet to be let into the secret.
“I forgot we never did tell Kuwabara,” Botan said remembering the House of Four Dimensions.
“Tell me what?” Kuwabara questioned looking at the others.
“We'll explain later,” Kurama assured him. Although dissatisfied, Kuwabara agreed.
“So what now?” Kuwabara asked leaning against the wall.
“I want you to watch this,” Koenma said switching on the TV. The screen was fuzzy at first but was soon replaced with a picture of Hiei.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE TV
Hiei swiftly approached a clearing and came to a halt in front of a demon. He had a scar across his left eye and was twice Hiei's size. He had long blue hair that was tied into a braid. He had a cloak similar to Hiei's but much smaller, and a sword on his hip. Hiei sneered at the larger demon and drew out his sword.
“Is that any way to treat an old friend,” the demon said.
“I killed you,” Hiei stated not taking his eyes off him.
“Well I can tell you that I'm very alive,” the man said laughing darkly.
Hiei tightened his grip on the sword. He kicked up from the ground and lunger at the demon. He dodged swiftly and turned around. This wasn't quick enough however. Hiei had already re-appeared behind him and with a cruel smirk plunged his sword through the demons back. Hiei let a victorious smirk pass but that quickly changed to confusion as the demon grabbed the blade of the sword and tugged it out of Hiei's grasp and his stomach. All of a sudden the entire screen went black.
End of TV POV
“What happened after that?” Kurama questioned almost afraid to ask.
“We don't know….” Koenma admitted his head bent.
