Chapter 4: Red Paint
*************************************************************** *********
Zan started to take out her math supplies, hoping that this math class would make her day a bit better. So far she was having a horrible day. Then as the heard of students were coming in to the class, each, laughing like a hyena, she spotted Hiei and Kurama coming into the room. She quickly looked away when she heard the bell ring, once again, class had begun.
Kurama caught sight of Zan sitting in the back row of the classroom.
"Hiei, shall we go sit in the back with Zan?" Kurama smiled.
"Hn, fine. But only because I wan to ask that girl how she could allow anybody push her around like that." Hiei smirked.
"Well then, let's seat ourselves."
Kurama and Hiei walked up to Zan. Kurama sat himself down on the right of Zan, and Hiei sat next to Kurama.
"Hello." Kurama greeted Zan.
Hiei smirked, and looked away from Zan.
Zan looked up and returned the greeting.
"Hn, how could you let yourself be pathetically humiliated in front of the class? You could have at least come up with at least one come back." Hiei looked at Zan as if she were a monkey.
"Look, I'm just used to it, and I don't disrespect teachers, no matter how much I hate them. Mr. Kitamura just hates me, and in case you didn't know, if a teacher just doesn't like you, you then better get ready for a living hell at school." Zan blurted out.
That's the same thing Yusuke said, Hiei thought.
"What about your classmates that insulted you?" Kurama asked.
"I would have, but I kinda wasn't able to. You see, Mr. Kitamura will try to bust me with every tiny little thing, so I can't really defend myself in his presence. I'm sorry that you think I'm so pathetic." Zan picked up her black pen.
"Hiei, Kurama, Zan, stop the chit-chat and get out your materials for class." The teacher, Mr. Nakamura calmly interrupted the conversation between the trio.
Hiei and Kurama did as they were told, and the lesson had begun.
Mr. Nakamura was a medium sized man and had gray hair. His eyes were a hazel-brown color. He had a gray and white suit on. He looked very dull and strict, which suited him perfectly, because Mr. Nakamura was very strict and dull.
Nobody knows how Mr. Nakamura got so strict, since, before he became a professor, he was a professional drummer in a rock and roll band called The Green Mountain Boys. Many students believed it was due to all the misfortunes that happened to Mr. Nakamura when he was in a band.
"Now students, if you would please take out your math books and turn to page 409…" Mr. Nakamura had begun the lesson.
The math class seemed to never end, but finally it was over and ended. As Zan started getting up a swarm of girls ran to Kurama.
"Hey Kurama, watcha doing this Friday?"
"Hey Kurama wanna walk with me to class?"
Hiei and Zan had the same expression on their faces. They looked like they were going to puke, so the two of them got up and left for 4th period without Kurama, which was literature.
"Sorry girls, but I must get to my next class, and all of my weekends are full." Kurama inched away from all of the girls that attacked him with their flirty attitudes.
Zan and Hiei headed toward class and sat them selves down at a desk for three. Kurama later walked in and sat in between Hiei and Zan.
"How can you tolerate all of those girls?" Zan and Hiei chimed together.
"Um well, I'm not exactly sure about that my self!" Kurama laughed nervously.
Zan and Kurama took out some paper. Kurama noticed Hiei was just sitting there so he nudged Hiei to take out some paper and a pen.
After everybody was seated, and was ready to begin class, the literature teacher popped out of nowhere.
"Hello class! Today we will be working on some short stories. All you have to do is write a 500-word or more essay about a certain topic. Today's topic will be animals. When you are finished, you may talk quietly among each other. Have fun!" Mrs. Kotamura announced.
Mrs. Kotamura was a very easy teacher. She would assign easy work and no homework. She was a Junior High teacher before, and a Kindergarten teacher too. This year she was the literature teacher for the 9th grade. But when it came to grading the things the students did in class she was very strict about it. A couple small mistakes could bring you down two whole letter grades on the assignment.
Mrs. Kotamura had long, black, silky hair that was never pulled back. She had matching pitch black eyes to go with her pitch-black hair. She had a long, skinny body. Her face had a couple of wrinkles and she had dark skin. She was wearing a light green T-Shirt that had a peace sign in the front, and a long navy skirt with matching high-heeled shoes. For some reason, it made Zan believe that Mrs. Kotamura had hippies for parents.
"So we just write anything that involves some kind of animal?" Kurama asked Zan.
"Yes, basically." Zan answered.
Most of the class pasted by in a flash. Suddenly, Yume and Milkshake went to Mrs. Kotamura and then left the classroom glancing once at Zan. Zan obviously new something was going to happen, and that she should be on her guard.
"Their up to something," Hiei breathed.
About ten minutes later, the two girls Yume and Milkshake came back into the class with an unpleasant smile on their faces. Zan knew right away that they were out to get her yet again. She was growing sick and tired of being picked on.
"Ok everyone, if you didn't finish you class work, take it home, bring it tomorrow, so have a nice day and don't forget that tickets for the theme dance this year are five dollars, and also, the head of the student council, Yume, has made it an `Antarctic' theme this year, so don't forget, have a nice day everyone!" Mrs. Kotamura told the students as they walked out.
"That Yume girl is the head of student council too?" Hiei raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, and that, I'm afraid, isn't a very good thing for you, Zan," Kurama packed away his story that he finished writing in literature class.
"Yah, that really does suck, it just makes my life at school even more miserable. And to top it off, Yume is Mr. Kitamura's favorite student, and will do practically anything for her… I find it so irritating! I really hate it when I'm being ganged up on, and I can't do anything about it!" Zan sighed and got up out of her desk and flung her backpack over her shoulder.
"Or maybe you can," Hiei got a sly look on his face.
"Oh? Like what?" Zan questioned Hiei.
"Well," Hiei looked at Zan.
"You could just ignore them like you are. It's very rare to see someone who can take that much humiliation and abuse," Kurama cut in. He knew Hiei would suggest something that involves violence, and apparently, Kurama didn't want any for the time being.
"Hn." Hiei looked away from Kurama.
"Oh, you don't have to worry about me, I'm fine really!" Zan threw a smile at Hiei. Hiei smiled very faintly, but that faint smile almost automatically turned into a smirk.
What is up with that smile of hers? It's so… so contagious… Hiei thought.
"Well, shall we go put our books away?" Kurama insisted in leaving the classroom, instead of just talking in their seats.
Kurama had noticed that the majority of the class had left and that Mrs. Kotamura was about to kick them out of the class. When Zan and Hiei realized what Kurama had noticed a while ago and agreed with him to leave.
Hiei, Kurama, and Zan left class together and got to their lockers. When they got there, they found out that their lockers were all next to each other. When they put all of their books away, the trio was heading for the cafeteria outside to get lunch. That was also the area Hiei and Kurama agreed to meet up with Botan, Kuwabara and Yusuke.
"What do they usually server for lunch?" Kurama asked Zan, taking out his wallet.
"Stick with the expensive food. All the cheap stuff is nasty…" Zan made a face while visualizing some of the food that was served in the cafeteria. Kurama started to laugh at Zan's expression.
"Hey, I couldn't have been that funny, and it's true, the cheap stuff taste really bad, especially the mashed potatoes…" Zan made the same face again visualizing the vegetable being served. Kurama once again laughed. Zan too started to laugh.
Zan looked over at Hiei. He saw Zan smiling at him. Hiei suddenly looked away.
Did he just… I could have sworn… Hiei… was… smiling? Wow… ok, the face I made couldn't have been that funny… Zan thought.
Something just clicked in Zan's mind.
"Oh, Hiei! Do you have money for lunch?" Zan asked the youkai.
"Hn, no I don't. Why do you care?" Hiei raised an eyebrow.
"Well, you got to eat something for lunch!" Zan exclaimed.
"Hn, you don't…" Hiei was cut off by Zan.
"Ok, I'll lend you ten dollars for lunch, but you better pay me back ok?" Zan took out a ten-dollar bill and handed it to Hiei. He pushed it away.
"Hn, I told you, I'm not hungry, you can use your own money to buy your own lunch." Hiei scowled at Zan.
"Ok, but if you get hungry, I can get you your lunch," Zan smiled pleasantly at Hiei.
"Zan, what do you suppose those girls, Yume, Milkshake, and their entire group are planning?" Kurama asked.
"Hm, I don't know, but I'm sure it will be no big deal…" Zan brushed some of her hair out of her eyes.
"You know I could go over there and ask what's going on," Kurama looked at Zan with a sparkle of worry in his eyes.
"Really Kurama! You don't have to worry! I can take care of myself! You are acting as if I were a toddler who can't do anything without her hand being held!" Zan laughed. She hadn't seen someone like Kurama for ages, yet something about him seemed so familiar…
Hiei smirked when Zan used a toddler as an example.
Hn, that reminded me of that fool Koenma… and that stupid mission finding a prince… at least I know what humans spend half of their lives doing; going to these moronic schools… Hiei thought.
"Ok, we arrived at the cafeteria!" Zan exclaimed as the three turned a corner and entered an enormous room filled with students.
Zan gave Kurama her wallet.
"Why are you giving me you wallet?" Kurama asked.
"Oh, I forgot my book I'm reading in my locker, and I want to go get it, can you please get me the number four on the fast food menu? Oh. Never mind, just tell the lady with the green gloves, `Zan wants the usual', ok? Can you please do that for me?" Zan got a twinkle in her eyes.
"Sure, the number four, lady in the green gloves, `Zan wants the usual'. Got it." Kurama smiled back at Zan. Hiei just stood there.
Zan then pulled Kurama close to her, and then she whispered something in his ear.
"Ok, I can do that too. Sushi of any sort?" Kurama winked at Zan.
"Yeah any, which ever is the best." Zan smiled back and skipped off to her locker.
"What was that all about?" Hiei asked Kurama as the line moved farther.
"Oh, Zan just ordered some more food." Kurama looked at Hiei.
"Then what was with the winking and the whispering?"
"Oh that, she felt embarrassed to say it out loud and the winking was just a way of saying I got it." Kurama lied.
"Whatever, I don't care." Hiei knew Kurama was lying.

Zan had just reached her locker when she saw Yume and Milkshake come over to her.
"Oh hello Zan, watcha doin'?" Yume slyly asked
"What do you want from me Yume?" Zan gave Yume and Milkshake a fierce glare, which also gave the two girls a chill down their backs.
"Oh nothing, we just want to talk, that's it, no harm in that now is there?" Yume stared at Zan.
"I'm only going to ask you this one more time, what do you want Yume?" Zan growled at Yume.
"Ooooh, scary. I just wanted to say that you look good in red…" Yume winked.
Zan raised her eyebrow. Suddenly she understood that that wink wasn't meant for her. She quickly turned around and saw nobody there. Yume, Milkshake and Zan were the only ones there. She slowly turned back to Yume and her disgustingly preppy sidekick.
"Are we nervous now? Don't worry, we won't bit…" Yume evilly smiled.
"What is going through that ugly head of yours?" Zan smirked.
"Oh nothing, like we said…" Yume pulled out of her pocket a remote control.
"What's tha…" Zan froze. Yume had pushed a red button, and at that exact moment, a huge bucket of red paint was dumped on Zan.
"LIKE I SAID YOU LOOK BETTER IN RED!!!" The two girls laughed like there was no tomorrow. Zan was drenched in red paint.
"I should have know there was something above me…" Zan closed her eyes feeling so stupid. Zan was on her knees and covering her face with her hands, while her hair draped over her shoulders, and partially over her hands.
Am I really that out of it? So out that a stupid prep could dump paint on me? Zan scolded herself in her mind.
"HAHAHAHA, look Yume, she looks so pathetic! Her hair is dyed red and her clothing is dripping with red paint. I wish we could see her face… but her hands are covering it! Oh and, Mr. Kitamura is expecting you… We have to go get lunch!" Milkshake nudged Yume.
"Oh yes, we have to go, don't want us to get blamed for your stupidity. Have a good cry!" Yume and Milkshake ran out of the hall.
Zan was raging with anger. She stood up and went to the girl's restroom. There she looked in the mirror and was in shock.
I look like… I look like… him as a girl… Kurama… I look like Kurama if he were a girl… Zan thought to herself staring at her reflection.
Zan tried to turn on the sink but the was no water.
Damn! Those damn girls thought of a full proof plan… Damn it!!! I guess all I can do is now… is payback… Zan glowed with rage, her eyes filed with anger, as a flame of danger, fury, and revenge danced in her eyes.
She stomped out of the restroom, and took a deep breath, and calmed her self down a bit.
"I look like Kurama because of you... I look like Kurama as a girl… and now I have to go threw a lot more of hell with Mr. Kitamura… this time, I will get my revenge… and it won't be just one practical joke… you better get ready to go to the corner of pay and back…" Zan smirked as she walked down the hall.
This time, I will punish you, you have crossed the line, I have reached my limit, I shall no longer `keep my cool with you', even if I get one thousand weeks of detention, I will still get my revenge… but because I feel sorry for you, I will go easy, but your version of light payback and heavy payback have two completely different meanings… Zan lectured in the depths of her mind… I will make the black haired and the bleached blonde cry, Yume and Milkshake... you better prepare for operation humiliation… hehe, yeah, right, I'm just gonna pay you back what I owe you…
***
"Hn, it can't possibly take that long to go from a locker until the cafeteria, but then again, that girl could have spotted a hungry little mouse and fed it some sushi…" Hiei smirked.
"Now, now Hiei, don't be so angry! I think it was very considerate of Zan to buy you lunch, no need to be angry about it!" Kurama smiled.
Hiei was angry because he found out what Zan had told Kurama to do.
***
"Hey Kurama, could you do me one more favor? Could you also buy Hiei some sushi for me? I have a feeling he will be hungry as soon as he sees the food that is being served. So can you please? Just wink and I will know that you understand ok? I'll wink back at you to say that it's all good, ok?" Zan had whispered to Kurama.
" Ok, I can do that too. Sushi of any sort?" Kurama winked at Zan.
"Yeah any, which ever is the best." Zan winked back and left.
"Can I help you? What would you like?" A lady who had green gloves on asked.
"Yes I would like some miso soup," Kurama gave the lady some money out of his wallet to the lady.
"Anything else?"
"Yes, Zan had asked me to buy her food for her," Kurama showed the lady Zan's wallet.
"Oh! Does Zan want her usual number 4?" The lady asked Kurama.
"Yes she did, and she also asked for the best sushi you have here, the number 5." Kurama smiled.
"Ok." The lady put out two trays, one with Kurama's food, and the other with Zan's number 4 (which was cheese pizza) and the number five, a very tasty-looking sushi.
"You have already paid for your meal, now for Zan that will be $12.72 please." The lady said.
Kurama gave the women the exact amount of money and left the line with Hiei. The two sat down at a table near a window in the corner, the place where Hiei and Kurama were supposed to meet Zan, and later on, Yusuke, Botan, and Kuwabara.
***
"I can't believe that girl, I didn't ask, I didn't want to eat, and then she goes and tell you to buy me food on the house… Why did you do that kitsune?" Hiei glared at Kurama.
"Naturally, I think it was very nice of her, so I think you should eat the sushi, but not now, when she comes back." Kurama smiled.
"Hn, an I suppose that's why you haven't eaten?" Hiei asked.
"Hey guys, sorry we're later, Mr. Kitamura ended up holding us back a little in class, and the line was long, mined if we join?" Yusuke sat down across from Kurama, Botan and Kuwabara sat down on either side of Yusuke.
"Wow, I didn't know shrimps could eat that much food…" Kuwabara taunted Hiei.
"Hn." Hiei glared at the carrot-toped fool.
"Actually, half of that food isn't Hiei's. Zan bought it for Hiei." Kurama saw Hiei give him a dirty look.
"Ooooh! How could someone even talk to the shrimp! And here he is, with a girl buying him food!" Kuwabara exclaimed.
"Hn." Hiei glared at Kuwabara, which shut him up.
"Well, anyhow, let's tell Hiei and Kurama what happen in our class today…" Botan told Yusuke and Kuwabara.
"Oh yah, ok." Yusuke sighed.
Another lunch wasted on mission talk… Yusuke thought.
"Tell us what?" Kurama asked.
"Well, it all began at second period…" Yusuke began.
