Kurama smiled down at him small lover, asleep on the bed. The fire demon was deep in Sandmanville, but a small scowl still played over his mouth. *Always on the defense…* Kurama sighed inwardly, trailing his slim finger across the gentle curve of Hiei's cheek.

The poor demon had almost had a heart attack when Yuusuke and Kuwabara had decided to pop over a week or so ago to say how glad they were that Kurama was finally cheering up. The small demon had been nude in Kurama's bed when they barged into the house. Shiori had taken the intruders well, asking all three of them for breakfast.

She had known Hiei spent the night; after all, Kurama had asked so politely if his classmate could sleep over since his home was being painted! But the extra company was welcomed, since Shuuichi and her husband were out of town on business. The next week...her first son found his own apartment, away from all the hassle and family.

//You light me up and then I fall for you
You lay me down and then I call you
Stumbling on reasons that are far and few
I'd let it all come down and then some for you\\

"Hiei?"

The question was soft, but the demon glanced over at his mate, a questioning note filling his eyes. The fox had been acting distant lately and the smaller man had been beginning to worry. Although he, of course, said nothing. Like always, Hiei was an observer. Never one to move without a plan of attack.

"What, fox?" He grunted, moving the cloth quicker over his blade. His eyes diverted once more to the katana, but his attention was focused solely on his koibito.

"…do you think we should tell people?" Kurama murmured, his own eyes on his plants by the windowsill. Hiei's head shot up, eyes burning into the kitsunes crimson locks. A light pink blush stained the youths cheeks, but he didn't look up.

"Tell them *what*, kitsune?" Hiei finally growled out, a scowl deepening on his face.

"…about us…?" Kurama turned, his hands clasped behind his back. His voice still came out just as flowing, just as soft and gentle, but there was a grieving note to it. "I hate having to sneak around and lie to my mother, and not being able to show any affection towards you if anyone else is around. It gets so frustrating when Mother tries setting me up and I have nothing to tell her except I have 'plans', even when you're not even coming over! I…"

Throughout the entire thing, the koorime's face remained impassive, the shadows playing off his hard features, though physically they were quite child-like. Finally, though, he decided to break the silence; the expression on the kitsunes face was stricken. He had to speak. "…hn. Do what you want."

//Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
I have been saving smiles for you.
Pretty baby why can't you see
You're the one that I belong to\\

He stood in the shadows, undetected to even his beloved, as the redheaded human stood, rather uncomfortably, in front of his mother. "'Kaasan… there's something I've been wanting to tell you."

"Of course, Shuuichi! What is it?" The pleasant smile on her face stayed there, and only grew wider at her sons next words, which flew from his mouth in a single shaky breath.

"'Kaasan…I'm in love."

"That's wonderful, Shuuichi!"

"…with a man, 'Kaasan." *Those* words shut the cheerful woman up. Her face drained of all color, dark eyes growing wide with shock. The kitsune stood there, chin lowered nearly to his chest as he allowed the human woman to absorb his words. Finally, his mouth opened again, "I love him…very, very much. I-"

"How long, Shuuichi?" His mother interrupted, arms crossing under her breasts. Her youthful face was lined with determines that rivaled her son while he was protecting his lover.

"How long, 'Kaasan?" The redhead blinked, eyebrows furrowing at the question.

"How long have you been with him?"

"…about six months, 'Kaasan. I…I've been in love with him since I was fifteen-" He winced slightly at her small gasp, "-and I told him when I was sixteen…he left for a year, and when he came back…" Tears filled his eyes, and the usually soft voice became choked with tears, "I'm so sorry, 'Kaasan. I wanted to tell you…but I was afraid that…that you…you wouldn't want me as your son anymore…" The liquid finally spilled over, down the pale, curved cheeks of the youko.

Shiori stared at the boy she had raised and flung herself at him, wrapping her arms around his upper arms and back. "Oh, Shuuichi! Haven't I taught you better? Haven't I shown you how much I love you?" Now she was crying as well, rubbing her cheek against her stunned child's shoulder, "Shuuichi, my son, my baby, I love you so much. So very, very much…"

After a few minutes of wordless blubbering between both parties, mother and son finally moved apart. As Shuuichi rubbed the last of his tears away, Shiori graced him with a placid smile, "And I want to meet this young man."

Kurama almost choked on his tongue, staring at his mother. "Wha-what?"

"I want to meet him." She said firmly once again, nodding her head. "I want to know the boy my son is in love with! I demand it, Shuuichi, as the right of every mother!"

"…I…I don't know if he'll agree, 'Kaasan. He's a very…distant person. And stubborn."

"Well, I don't care. You'll talk him into meeting you're dear, sweet okaasan, won't you, Shuu-chan?" The sweet smile she had dancing on her lips was betrayed by the amused tone of her voice. Kurama heaved a sigh and nodded his agreement.

//I'll be the embrace that keeps you warm
For you are the sun that breaks the storm.
I'll be alright and I'll sleep sound.
As long as you keep comin' round, oh pretty baby\\

"No."

"Hiei, please!" The redheads face was pulled into a pleading expression. He was kneeling beside his bed where Hiei was perched, cross-legged. Kurama had his hands on each of Hiei's knees, his lip caught between his ivory teeth.

"No, kitsune." His eyes flickered downward for a split second to see the hurt flash over his boyfriends face. "I refuse."

Kurama's grip on his lovers knees tightened for a blink and he looked down as his let his hold go lax. His hands slipped from Hiei's knees and onto his own lap. "Please, koibito… I'm begging you, please."

The koorime heard the tears in his loves tone and reached down with one hand, successfully undoing the crossed-arm thing he had going earlier. With the minute appendage, he tipped the fox's' chin up and, in seeing the unshed tears glazing his lovers emerald eyes, sighed. The noise was hardly heard, for such an exhalance would be a small thing for anyone else.

"…only for you, K'rama." The smile that lit up Kurama's face was enough of a reward for anything in the world, and the fire demon allowed himself to relish the expression, running his fingertips over the lips of his beloved.

"Thank you, Hiei…" The fox continued smiling, kissing each of Hiei's fingertips, eliciting a small purr from the back of the koorime's throat. "Should we tell her we're living together, or not?"

"I think she's an intelligent woman and has already grasped the fact that you have a lover, and since you live away from home, you most likely live with said lover." Was the blunt answer in the deep voice of the one and only Half-breed. Kurama chuckled, nuzzling his lovers hand with his cheek.

"No, not lover, Hiei-koi." The fox murmured, kissing the small palm of his diminutive boyfriend, "Not lover…love."

Hiei graced his dearest animal spirit with a small smile, stroking the wild, flame-hued tresses. "What are we going to do about the idiot and the others?"

"Want to tell them, too?" Kurama's last word ended with a sound between a coo and a purr, resting his chin on his boyfriends lap, "I will…but only if you agree, Hiei."

"Doesn't matter to me." A slender shoulder raised in a careless shrug, a small hand continuing to stroke the silken locks of fire and the creamy skin underneath, curved into a delicate arc. "I want to be there to see the imbeciles face when he figures out what 'partner' means."

"You're too cruel, Hiei…" Kurama chuckled, nuzzling his smaller lovers upper thigh, "Though it's part of your charm."

"Hn."

"Really! It truly is! Don't you believe me?" The fox sent his lover a wounded pout, and was given a smirk in return. "You don't! Why you-!" Laughing, the kit pounced upon his startled lover, pinning him to the bed. Hiei blinked numbly at his lover and struggled feebly against him.

"You love it. Admit it." Kurama purred, leaning down to nuzzle Hiei's neck. The struggling was almost pathetically minimal, and stopped altogether when the kitsune began kissing gently along the flesh of Hiei's neck, nibbling softly. "So we tell them?"

"Mmm…nnngh…sure, fox…"

//And I know things can't last forever
But there are lessons that you'll never learn
Oh just the scent of you makes me hurt
So how's it you that makes me better\\

The 'group' took the news well enough, with Yuusuke announcing: "I've known it! You can't look at someone like Kurama looked at Hiei and NOT know it!" His face was all grins and he was giving Hiei a thumbs-up signal all day. "You know how many schoolgirls would KILL for your boyfriend?"

Hieis eyebrow rose in an involuntary twitch, his scowl growing in size. They were annoying him with all their cheer…he just wanted his fox to be happy and if telling the oafs would comfort the youko's soul, then so be it.

The real thrill for the koorime came, though, when Kuwabara found out. The oafs face went completely slack, his gorilla-like jaw falling a good size inches closer to the ground. Narrowed eyes became nearly round as his body began unwanted spasms, the boy looking as unhinged as he was when his kitty was stolen.

"Y-You're with K-Kurama?!" He shrieked, cheekbones incredibly prominent as the words flew from his mouth. Hiei smirked cruelly, stalking up to the much taller youth.

"I've been living with him for half a year," The minute demon sneered, smacking his lips together in a cruel jest at the horror-struck human, "We've been making love for over half a year. He's panted and moaned and cu-"

"Hiei!" Kurama yelped, staring in shock at his lover. Kuwabara was screeching about being mentally scarred, holding his ears as if in physical pain.

"…yes, fox?" Hiei cast his kitsune a lazy look, an eyebrow arching. "You don't want me telling people what you can do in bed?"

"No!"

"…fine. *shrug* If you say so, kitsune."

//Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
I have been saving smiles for you.
Pretty baby why can't you see
You're the one that I belong to\\

Now…was the hard part. Shiori.

Kurama led his lover to his mothers home, nibbling constantly on his full, lower lip, anticipation rushing through his veins. "Don't worry, Hiei…she'll love you as much as I do."

Hiei merely grunted, folding his arms over his small, well muscled, chest as the two entered the dwelling, Kurama's pale hand on his lovers shoulder. The fire demon was far more relaxed then his counterpart, his fingers drumming impatiently on his arm during the few seconds it took Shiori to answer the door.

He wasn't nervous…not at all. Shit. He was scared fucking shitless. He knew how much Shiori's approval or disapproval meant to the kitsune. If the mother didn't like him…that would put a definite strain on the relationship. Losing the kitsune would be like losing more of his soul…it would kill Hiei if the kit left him because the mother hated him.

His fright was unneeded as the door opened, the noise as gentle and fluid as woman herself. She had dark hair and sparkling dark eyes, a far cry from Kuramas crimson locks and bright eyes, but the bright smile that blossomed on the humans face when she saw her son was so much like Kuramas that it almost took Hieis breath away.

Despite the obvious difference in their coloring, Kurama's human form was more definitely Shiori's spawn. The youthful beauty and optimistic outlook that shone on each of their faces was clearly both an emotional and hereditary marking.

"Okaasan, this is Hiei, my boyfriend." Kurama smiled winningly at his mother, squeezing his lovers shoulder softly when he felt the muscles under his fingers tense up at the introduction. "Hiei, this is my okaasan."

Nothing more had to be said from the red head. The next move was the koorimes, as Shiori was clearly in shock at the mans downright young face and size. Her baby boy couldn't be a pedophile…

There was a moments tension as Hiei eyed his loves human mother, his arms folding even tighter over his chest. "…you have his smile."

The deep, completely masculine tone of the fire demon convinced the woman he was, indeed, older then his physical form showed. Relief flowed through her, since her darling child wasn't a rapist of any sort. As long as he was happy…right?

Kurama, however, just blinked and felt a warm glow inside his chest as his mother started turning a dull pink, voicing her deep thanks at the compliment. She was always getting compliments on her son, especially his heart-warming smile, so this was a high honor her childs deep-voiced lover gave her.

"Please come in, Shuuichi, Hiei." Shiori ushered them inside, "Excuse the mess please, Hiei, my husband and stepson are out of town visiting my in-laws and I'm afraid I'm allowing the place to get a bit lived in."

"She's *defiantly* your mother, fox…" Hiei muttered, low enough so only Kurama could hear. The red head blushed and murmured something about clean being always a GOOD thing. In all actuality, the living space was nearly spotless, with only a glass, on one of those mat-things women are always squealing about, on the table in the living room.

There were photos of Kurama all over the room in his ningen form. As a small child, an infant even. Playing, smiling, laughing or playing in his mothers garden. Face smudged with dirt or dust, always a large, loving smile on his rounded face, emerald eyes always twinkling with hidden knowledge and laughter.

Hiei moved to a picture that caught his eye especially. His fox was about twelve years old, curled up on a couch with a teddy bear in his arms. The cheek of the fuzzy animal was pressed against the smooth skin of Kuramas own, crimson locks, only about chin length, fanned about the bear and the boy.

"Shuuichi had just turned twelve. The bear had been a gift from his father before he passed away." The fire demon made no move that he had heard the woman speak behind him. Instead he ran a finger over the frame, eyes glued to the sight before him.

"It's a…nice picture." He let his eyes move towards the human mother for an instant, and saw her soft smile. He repressed his own impulse to smile back. By the gods, how she looked like Kurama when she smiled. He could grow to like this family.

"Shuuichi was a marvelous boy. Still is." She reached for another photo, hanging above the one Hiei was so captivated with. It held a shot of a man with dark hair holding a small baby with red wisps around his chubby face, and bright green eyes, even at so young an age. "He would have been proud of his son."

"As I know you are…" Hiei hesitated, but spoke again anyway, though he wasn't used to so much vocalization, "…my thanks for being so welcoming. I know most ni-most people would not have been."

Kurama beamed at his beloved, daring to step behind the minute man and wrap his arms around the slender shoulders. "I assured him you would like him, 'Kaasan."

"And I do!" The woman smiled brightly, patting her sons cheek with warm affection, "Now, to dinner!"

//I'll be the embrace that keeps you warm
For you are the sun that breaks the storm.
I'll be alright and I'll sleep sound.
As long as you keep comin' round, oh pretty baby\\

The dinner was actually enjoyable, Kurama and Shiori doing most of the talking with some 'hn's and few word long sentences. In the end, Kurama's mother was totally in love with Kurama's koibito, and Hiei didn't find the ningen so distasteful after all. In fact, he was glad his beloved had such an understanding dam. He knew full well that ningens didn't take kindly to homosexuality. Narrow minded bastards.

"Told you Kaasan would love you!" The happy kitsune chirped, his hand snugly in Hiei's as they made their way to their apartment.

"You being in love with me helped, kit." Hiei scoffed, glancing away. In his pocket he had a small photo album Shiori had slipped him, full of pictures of Kurama, from childhood on up. For even this small thing, he was getting to adore the woman. Pictures of his beloved came in short supply, and when he was young and innocent? Almost never. The demon would treasure the album almost as much as he treasured Kurama.

"You complimenting her in veiled ways help too." The fox chuckled, casting Hiei a smile. His hand squeezed his lovers affectionately, "Not to mention being sincere with them."

"Most of them were about you."

"You're so sweet."

//Why can't you hold me
and never let go
When you
touch me
it is me that you own
Pretty baby oh the place that you
hold in my heart
Would you break it apart again...oh pretty baby\\

"…what if she had hated me?"

Kurama peeked open one jade eye, yawning softly. He was curled around his minute boyfriend after a round of hot lovemaking… personally, even though he had been the submissive one, he was wiped out. "What, Hiei?"

The fire demon sat up, his gaze on the white sheet in front of him. His top half was exposed to the air, hair freely spiking around his childlike features. Kurama thought there had never been a more beautiful man then his darling koorime. "…what if your mother had hated me?"

"Then she would've hated you." Kurama gave a sleepy shrug, wrapping one arm about his lover. "W…" Then his eyes both opened and he blinked with renewed wakefulness. "Do you mean what would've happened to *us*?"

"…"

"Hiei! I can't believe…" The fox sighed, nuzzling Hiei's hipbone with his ningen nose, "Yes, I can… Hiei, even if my mother had disliked you, I would always love you. I would have still been yours and loved you forever and ever. Believe me when I say this, Hiei! I claimed you as my mate six months ago…and you me. That means always, koibito. Through life and past death." His gentle lips placed a single kiss on the skin of Hiei's hip. "Understand?"

"…hai." That single word was enough, and so were the actions that followed. Hiei snuggled down into the covers and curled about his taller lover.

"…ne, Hiei?"

"Hn…?" Now it was Hiei's turn to open a sleepy eyelid, eyebrow furrowing.

"Sweet dreams."

"…hn. Baka kitsune…" But his eye slipped closed as his arms wrapped around the youko. Kurama sighed happily, laying a soft kiss on his lovers spiky hair before falling asleep himself.

//Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
I have been saving smiles for you.
Pretty baby why can't you see
You're the one that I belong to
I'll be the embrace that keeps you warm
For you are the sun that breaks the storm.
I'll be alright and I'll sleep sound.
As long as you keep comin' round, oh pretty baby

Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
Pretty baby, don't you leave me,
Pretty baby my pretty baby
My pretty baby...\\
