Ch.18
The temple grounds were all but unstrained. A uneasy atmosphere due to the presence of a certain fire demon and his soon to be ex-familiar spread through out the late afternoon they arrived. At night the moon left a hazy glow on the trees and roof tops. The glow could not reach Hiei who was hidden under the long needled branches so he remained shrouded in darkness. Despite the pull he felt in his mind that wanted him to be near her he kept his composure and stayed a good distance away. He had no need for anyone, he did just fine on his own because he'd never had a family, the ones who raised him were thieves and cared nothing for him. They'd disappeared one morning when he was five, he was becoming too strong and it scared them. Weaklings, scared of a little child. From then on he was alone until he found his sister. Even then he only watched her, hiding while she played with the forest's animals. He'd been content with that, but if he went too close to the familiar he would be compelled to touch her, and that would be unacceptable. He sighed and stretched his arms behind his head, then rested them over his stomach. He shut his eyes but the sound of crunching leaves and sticks brought his attention to the person standing underneath him on the ground. His night vision saw clearly that it was the blonde demon with the vanity issues. He waited for the other demon to talk.
"You and I are up next for guard duty," He stated.
Hiei blinked," I wont go near that woman."
The blonde shrugged," That's fine I'll guard her room, you can have the perimeter."
Hiei nodded and the demon walked away, the sound of snapping brush faded off into the dark trees.
"Hn."
He stood up and took off through the forest finding a spot in the center where he could keep track of any spiritual energy in that area. Alas his concentration was horrible for the only thing he could focus on was the familiar. He was finished giving into these unspeakable desires, if it consumed his mind and drove him insane so be it. He was finished...or was he?
A sigh escaped his lips. He had never desired anyone this much, not physically or otherwise. His hands ached with the need to run caresses over her flesh. As far as Hiei knew he was the first male she'd ever been with, however it wouldn't have mattered to him if the familiar slept with every other man she met. What he wanted required no real thought, only instinct. For that night he would allow the instinct to take over then it would be gone. Hiei turned his head in the direction of the temple grounds.
'I may want this but I highly doubt she'd agree to it, and I refuse to rape her', He closed his eyes,' But...that might be my only option.'
'I suppose I could put her in a trance, that might work...'
He growled at the fact that he was even having to think about it. Deciding on the easiest way to take a woman without her realizing it was low even for him.
'Why did it have to be me?'
The fire demon shook his head and exhaled a long breath. He proceeded to jump on the tree tops and branches heading for her room. He approached the building and saw Suzuka sitting on the steps in front of the door. The blonde demon looked up at him questioningly.
"I want to switch," Hiei said.
"Really? I thought you said you wouldn't go near her."
"It doesn't matter now," He said softly.
"That's fine, just make sure you pay attention to guarding instead of paying attention to her."
"Hn."
'Just shut-up and leave you idiot', He thought.
He frowned as the demon vanished into the forest leaving him alone with the familiar. He quietly slid the door open and slinked inside. She was sleeping on her side, hand underneath the pillow. Staying a few feet back before walking to gaze over her. The blanket was pulled up to her chin so he couldn't see what she was wearing. Kneeling down he touched her cheek with his finger running it down along her jaw line then under her bottom lip. He leaned over and kissed her gently, then slid the tip of his tongue across her mouth. A sigh came from her and he jerked back wondering if she were about to wake. Instead she grunted in a not-so-lady-like fashion and rolled onto her other side. Taking the edge of the blanket he began to pull it back slowly exposing her neck and shoulders. He leaned in again but stopped and darted back when she opened her eyes.
Hiei thought about fleeing back outside and his eyes flicked to the closed door but halted when she said nonchalantly," I know you're there gremlin, if you wanna screw just give me the courtesy of waking me up first, ok?"
She blinked at him, and yawned, then sat up letting the blanket fall to her waist. Hiei stood in awe by what she had just said.
"H-how?," He stammered.
"I woke up when you licked my mouth, if you'd have had your eyes open you would've noticed. I had a girlfriend who liked to do that same thing, bugged the hell out of me."
The fire demon tried to hide his embarrassment but failed. He watched her, body rigid, silent as the grave.
'It would be far more stupid to leave now that's she's seen me. I have to think of something else.'
She continued talking," I remember you telling me not long ago that you wanted nothing to do with me. I don't take you as the hypocritical type so why the change of heart? You couldn't handle it anymore?"
He blinked slowly," You could say that."
"Alright, so come here and let's get this over with." She motioned for him to come closer.
"Do you have any idea what you're suggesting to me?," He frowned," Haven't you learned anything from the previous encounters?"
The familiar shrugged," So you like it rough, big deal. Blood doesn't bother me as long as I'm not getting it shoved down my throat, makes you puke after a while."
Was she serious, or was it pretend because she was nervous he was in there? He wasn't sure, he'd never met anyone who was so good at faking their emotions. Hiei could read what she was thinking but not what she *felt*.
"You wanna do this or are you just gonna stand there and stare at me?"
"Hn. Are you so intent on allowing me to hurt you? It's not going to be very pleasant."
Her gaze never wavered, instead she smirked," You know? Kurama was right, you're not all that scary once I figured you out."
"You think you know me, very amusing," He said dryly.
That had annoyed him. A human who actually believed she understood a demon's mind? Comical, pathetic, *typical*. Hiei thought that perhaps touching her now would not be such a good idea, he might purposefully injure her out of spite.
He narrowed his eyes," Just for that I might take you up on your offer."
A shadow of fear reached her eyes, but then receded back down. So he had been right, this was another cover up for how she really felt. Was the woman ever straight forward?
"Another game I see?," He turned his back to her," I'll come back tomorrow night, if your opinion is still the same we'll proceed from there."
'Stupid human girl' He cursed after he slid the door shut behind him,' You have no idea what I am, not in the slightest.'
But if it was a ruse to trick him into showing her, she wasn't going to like it. In fact, Hiei planned on her not liking it.

To Kuwabara's dismay Hiei chose to sleep outside in the surrounding forests of Genkai's temple, so his hard work to move the clutter out of the spare room was for nothing. He was sure to make Yusuke aware of his annoyance by letting two of his cats onto his friend's bed to sleep while he wasn't there. To *Yusuke's* dismay the gray Manx had left a wonderful present for him right in the center.
"Kuwabara! That stupid hairball or yours *hacked* up a hairball on my sheets!"
He banged on his room-mate's bedroom door," Dammit Kuwabara! I know you're in there!"
"Too bad, that's what you get for making me move all that stuff for nothing!"
"How was I suppose to know it wasn't gonna get used!?," He growled.
He heard a muffled snicker and looked in the small dining area to see Kurama with his face hidden in a book. The red head was shaking as if he were attempting to hold in a laugh.
"Hahaha, very funny. Why didn't you stop him *Shuiichi*?," Yusuke emphasized Kurama's human name.
"Sorry, but I always avoid getting tangled up in fights between friends," He said.
"Yeah, 'cause you think it's *funny*," Yusuke growled and tore the sheets off his mattress," What the hell am I gonna use to sleep on tonight? The Laundromat is closed!"
"Use the spare room," Kurama called to him.
"I *don't* remember asking for your opinion!"
"Shit," Yusuke threw the soiled bundle onto his floor where the rest of his unwashed clothing lay piled. He shrugged, snatched some clean sweatpants and a pair of boxers then walked out and into the small extra room. He threw a threatening glare back at the laughing demon then shut the door behind him.

The torches threw moving shadows on the stone walls surrounding them. Niko awaited his master's orders out side her chamber where the two familiars were being kept. Anoril had left yesterday and had not returned with any news, he knew the illusion master would not go against his master's wishes, none of them dared. The two demons who guarded her door glared coldly at him. Neither of them approved of his actions, but they were only body guards and had no say in how the orders were completed.
He smiled at the green-haired animal spirit know as Suriahs, her beauty was astonishing but her expression was malevolent enough to send the most fearless of warriors running for their mothers. Her cousin, the silver-haired Motemiri, was just as ruthless. A dark embroidered hood hid their eyes and the sides of their faces. A knock at the door echoed in the hall. Quietly Motemiri raised her left arm and opened it using the large iron handle. Niko bowed his head as his master entered the long cramped space.
"Niko, what news do you bring me?," Her voice sounded weary and rough.
"My lady, the third familiar has left the demon realm and returned to the human psychic's temple. Anoril had gone to retrieve her from them."
"Wonderful," She turned around with a swish of her robes," The other two are prepared for the ceremony?"
"Yes, my lady."
His master returned to her chamber and the door was closed behind her. Niko smiled once more at the foreboding cousins and walked back down the long hall way and into the machine's room. As always it bubbled and hissed, its metal form reflecting his pale face and dark eyes.
'Very soon," he smiled,' Very soon I will see how much power these simple creatures truly possess.'

A splitting headache is what greeted Jordan when she awoke.
"Owww," She groaned," Why this now...?"
She squeezed the bridge of her nose in an attempt to chase the pain away, with no luck. She vaguely recalled the conversation with the fire demon last night.
'Damn, I should learn to keep my fucking mouth shut,' She rubbed her temples,' Every word that comes out of it seems to piss him off.'
Then she cringed at the last thing he said to her.
*I'll come back tomorrow night, if your opinion is still the same we'll proceed from there.*
'I really don't want to repeat the first time we...'She sighed
"Oh well, can't take back what I said," Jordan shrugged and stood up, then changed out of her black boxers and t-shirt. It was the third set of clothing she'd borrowed from Kuwabara's older sister ans she'd never even met the woman face to face. Jordan made her was through the dark room and went out side.
The sun hadn't begun to rise and the sky was dark.
"Where are you going?"
Jordan looked to her left, the blonde demon she'd met yesterday was near the stairs.
"Out side, why?"
"The sun isn't up yet, so if it's not important go back in the room."
"Ok, fine," She muttered. Normally she'd have told him to get bent and die but her head felt like it was going to explode soon and she wasn't in the mood to argue. The familiar slid the door closed and sat down on the cool wood, head resting in her hands.
"Owwww, sonofabitch this sucks...," She hissed under her breath. She squeezed her eyes shut and growled.
"Wha?," The room started to spin in three directions, her head was about to fall off from the sheer torture. The wave of dizziness slid down her face, neck and chest until it reached her stomach. She covered her mouth with her hand and tried to hold the sick feeling back. It was no use. At the last second she ran to the other side, threw open the door and tossed the contents
of her stomach onto the dirt. It did not make it any better, the nausea was still there, but she no longer felt like vomiting. Jordan leaned back on the stairs and caught a glimpse of what she lost. The puddle was mixed with dark red along with the normal green and yellow. Her stomach felt like it was trying very hard to crawl into her lungs. A figure approached, blurred out, but she figured it was the blonde guy. He ran to where she lay and was speaking to her but he might as well have been speaking French, she couldn't hear a word of it. His face swirled, turned red, then bright white, then she could feel herself slipping into unconsciousness.

Touya awoke as the first hints of sunrise filtered through the trees. A few feet above him Jin floated, asleep. The wind master had started out on the floor, but as usual he'd ended up in the air, the blue haired demon scooted out from underneath him. He'd learned from the first time Jin did that to move before he was flattened. He threw his shirt on and walked to the door, hearing a small thump as the red head woke up and landed on the wood.
"Wha- Oh, was I doin' it again?," He asked smiling.
"Yes," He replied.
The ice demon slid open the door and stepped out side. The warm rising sun, which usually brought color to everything it touched, seemed to go straight through Touya and left him out of place amongst the red and yellow glow. He sighed and put a hand to his brow in order to shade his eyes from the glare. He squinted at a shape illuminated by the light against the trees. Touya recognized the hair, it was Hiei. Had he been awake all night?
"Hey, when do...hmm?," Jin walked up beside him and stopped his sentence when he noticed what the ice magician was staring at.
"Is that Hiei?"
"I believe so."
"Does he smile ever?," Jin asked.
Touya shrugged," Don't know."
"Hmph, well I'm going to find food."
Touya kept his eyes on Hiei's figure as the cheerful wind master set off to another part of the temple. There wasn't a real reason Touya felt compelled to watch him, or at least there wasn't one he could think of. A few minutes later the illuminated figure vanished into the forest as the sun finished its ascent into the sky.

"Yusuke!"
Kieiko was yelling at him again. He watched her jaw clench as she prepared to hit him.
"No Keiko...I'm not going to school today...."
"Yusuke!"
Huh? What was Kurama's voice doing in his dream?
The dream suddenly ended when a pillow collided with the side of his head.
"Wake up dumb-ass!"
Kuwabara glared down at him.
"What the hell do you want?"
"Yusuke," He glanced over to see Kurama standing in the doorway," Jor- the *familiar* is ill."
"How ill?"
"As in she was up-chucking blood." Kuwabara answered.
Yusuke shot up," What? Why?"
"Genkai just called us, they are not sure as of yet. I am leaving in a few minutes, you can stay if you like. I'd just thought I would let you know." Kurama turned and left the room.
"Aw man, why now? We really don't need this kind of shit," He grumbled while changing his clothes," What time is it anyway?"
"Five-thirteen."
"What?!" He yelled," Only five-thirteen?
"Yeah, and my sister is coming to pick us up in her car so you'd better get your butt moving. Besides...you need a shower."
Yusuke glared at his friend but didn't say anything, the bigger issue was the woman. If she died they were screwed out of any chance of finding the other two familiars or why whom ever was after her wanted them in the first place. His English wasn't the greatest despite Kurama's attempts to teach him, Kuwabara seemed to do a lot better with foreign languages. He'd never had a conversation with the woman, and had no interest in her personal life. Still, they needed her as bait to find the masterminds behind it all, if there was anything he could do to keep her alive he would try.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Hiei crunched his boots over the brush on the forest floor. Solitude was the only thing he wanted at that moment, blissful solitude. No familiar, although he would make sure to keep his word and come back that night. He wanted to see how long she was going to keep her act up.
He paused and tilted his head to the tree tops. A large power source was getting closer to him, it felt like one of the demons who was staying with Genkai.
"Hiei!," A voice called from a above him.
A gust of wind brought the red headed demon five feet above him.
"I found you," He said," Come quick somethin's wrong with the lass."
Wrong? "What?"
Jin sighed in frustration," The familiar, she's out cold. Hurry!"
The fire demon arched an eye brow," Why do you need me?"
"Genkai told me to find you."
"Hn." He looked down," Go back, I'll follow."
Jin nodded quickly and flew away. Hiei jumped into a tree leaping from branch to branch. It was odd the woman was hurt this badly, she had been fine a few hours ago. Why the sudden change? Most creatures did not fall ill without a good reason. He landed in front of a statue and followed the waiting demon into one of the buildings.
Almost everyone was there, except Kurama, Yusuke, and the idiot human. Yukina and the old woman were rubbing ointment onto the familiar's face, neck, and chest. Botan, the ice magician and the blonde demon stood a good distance back, watching. Genkai lanced up as Hiei entered.
He walked up to them and stood over her," What happened?"
"We are not sure yet. Yukina is trying to heal her. I can't understand why she would fall deathly ill so fast. Though I'm guessing it has something to do with your fading bond with her."
Hiei shook his head," The bond will take at least three weeks to fade significantly, I highly doubt it's the cause of this."
"She has a fever of 107," Yukina whispered," It isn't coming down, and...I can't seem to help her at all. She's only becoming worse."
The ice apparition dipped the towel into a bowl of water and wrung it out, then placed it back on her forehead. Hiei frowned at his sisters despair, she hated to see people suffer, human or not.
The familiar's face and neck were flushed and a trickle of blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
"Don't give up yet." Genkai said," We may still have a chance."
Her eyes darted to the him when she said it. He knew what she meant, but the familiar could heal *him*, he wasn't sure if it applied both ways.
Hiei closed his eyes and sighed," Everyone out, now."
"What?," Botan asked.
Genkai nodded," You heard him, out. Go."
She waved her hands at them. He opened his eyes when he felt Yukina stand up. She looked at him," Help her, it would be a horrible shame for her to die."
He nodded not know what to say. She smiled sadly," Good luck."
After everyone was gone he took off his boots and outer covering, then set them on the floor.
"Hn?," Out of the corner of his eye he noticed some one standing there. He looked over his shoulder. The ice magician hadn't left the room, he seemed to be lost in his thoughts.
"Is something wrong?" He asked Touya coldly.
Not meeting his gaze the ice demon blinked, shook his head slightly then turned and left the room.
Hiei switched his attention back to the woman. He removed the towel from her forehead and set it aside. He then ran a finger down her face and put his hand on her neck. He could feel her pulse thumping behind the hot skin. He pressed his other hand between her breasts feeling her heart beat.
'It's much too fast' He thought.
He almost jumped back when her eyes flew open.
"Hn?"
Her normally grayish-brown eyes were now a deep blood red. They fixed on him and she sat up.
"What?"
Suddenly she lunged forward and sank her teeth into his bare shoulder. Blood flowed down his arm, and dripped onto the floor. For a few seconds he did nothing. He could have ripped her away easily, but he didn't want to hurt her. His hand slipped against the floor and he went down on his back. The familiar stopped and coughed.
"What the fuck?," She choked out. He saw her throat clench as she tried not to vomit. She pushed away and sent up around twenty ounces of dark liquid onto the floor.
"What...what did I just do?"
"I don't know," He said quietly holding his injured shoulder.
She grabbed the towel and tried to wipe the blood off her face, but there was too much.
"Here," She flipped the towel around onto the other side and pressed it to his shoulder. Hiei watched her face intently. The woman had done the same exact thing that he had done to her. He sighed, hoping it wasn't going to be a normal occurrence.
