Ch.1
Tokyo, Japan
The late afternoon sky was clear, the air was fresh from the morning's rain, a cool breeze blew through the trees, and Yusuke Urameshi wasn't noticing any of it at all. He, of course, was brooding after receiving one of Keiko's ground-shaking smacks in the face (which had not been entirely his fault suprisingly). At age 21 he had grown from a cute teenage guy to an even cuter young man. He was currently trying to balance working a part-time job, going to college, and spending time with his girlfriend, while still attempting to find time for himself. It wasn't easy, but he managed. A year before that he moved out of his mother's apartment and into a "bachelor pad" with Kuwabara and Kurama. Kuwabara and He barely saw their pretty red-headed friend except for the weekend when they all cleared their schedules for some quality 'guy time'. That usualy consisted of splurging for pizza, and a movie. Usualy an action-comedy, but Kuwabara always insisted they rent a trashy romance, in which the suggestion was always answered with a punch in the shoulder, and an annoyed "Forget it". Yusuke cherished his friends more than anything, even though he would rather be poked in the back with a red-hot cattle prod than admit it infront of them.
He rubbed his cheek again and sighed, then stretched his arms over his head.'I wonder what's keeping that dummy so late'.He regarded right before he saw Kuwabara jog over the hill and to the park bench he was sitting at.
The six foot plus man bent over, hands on his knees, to catch his breath.
"So,what took you so long?," Yusuke said impatiently.
"Shut-up Urameshi, the place was busy, I had to work over-time,"He huffed out between breaths.
The dark-haired hero shrugged,"Fine."
Yusuke leaned his head back and stared at the rustling leaves in the tree over his head. Kuwabara sat down beside him.
"So, what's so damn important you had to tell me about it right after work?
Yusuke was silent for a second then said,"I got a message from Botan."
"Really, and....?"
"It was from Koenma."
Kuwabara frowned, puzzled for a moment by what Yusuke ment, but then as if a lightbulb turned on in his head his eyes went wide,"You don't mean....?"
"YES!!,"Yusuke growled, balling his fists,"Some asshole's causing trouble again and I have to go deal with him! On top of it Keiko threatened to dump me if I *do* go!,"Yusuke punched into the palm of his hand,"I hate the Spirit World!"
His irritaion wasn't helped by Kuwabara's face being four inches away as he observed the large red blotch on his friend's face. Yusuke scowled at him,"What?"
Kuwabara grinned even more, then began snickering,"So, is that what happened to the side of your face, your girl took her anger out on it?"
Yusuke glared at him,"Does your face want to match?"
Kuwabara sneered,"Bring it on..."
They closed the gap between them, hands clenched and ready to bruise. Just as Yusuke pulled his fist back an almost silent voice broke the motion and he nearly fell sideways.
"Am I interrupting?"
The glaring duo turned in the direction of the speaker. Kurama stood leaning against the tree behind them with an amused expression on his face.
"Hey, Kurama. Did you get the message from Botan?"
The quiet red-head nodded his expression turning from relaxed to uncomfortable,"It would appear we have a...problem."
"Yes it would,"Yusuke sighed,"Are you going?"
"The way he phrased it made the assignment sound very critical,"Kurama walked forward until he was a few inches away from the bench.
"Yeah,"Yusuke tapped his foot against the leg of the bench,"He said to contact him to get the rest of the info."
"I think this case will be a dangerous one Yusuke, Botan looked genuinely worried and that isn't normal for her."
"You do have a point...,"He stared at the ground. Yusuke stood up and faced Kurama,"Alright, let's do it...but I'm not making any guarentees until I hear everything."
"Neither am I,"Kurama smiled. Yusuke grinned back,"Just like old times."
Kuwabara leaped up,"Hey, I'm coming too."
"Why? Koenma didn't send you a message..."
"So? I wanna know what's going on, I have a right to know,"He crossed his arms and frowned at the shorter man.
Yusuke shrugged,"If you want to..."
The three friends said nothing else as they walked to the place Botan specified to meet her at.

Demon World
Just as the human world had five wonderful years of 'peacefulness', so did the Demon World. Or as peaceful as a bunch of demons could get. The current king wasn't that bad of a ruler and managed to keep revolts due to his law that demons were no longer allowed in the human realm, and visa-versa, under controle. With the help of a few others, namely, Yomi, Mukuro, and Hiei of course. Hiei had made an even more fearsome reputation for him self as Mukuro's right-hand man. He stayed by her side by choice, and although they weren't lovers (despite the rumors), Hiei had a great amount of respect for the famale demon lord. She was one of the few people to defeat him in a match. He always wondered if he was strong enough now to challenge her and win, but he was far too smart to try it.
He waited for Mukuro now, seated in a large black arm chair. She had called him back to her home saying she wanted to discuss something. The older demon had sounded grim, possibly worried, which had peaked Hiei's curiosity. His eyes burned from lack of sleep, his third eye as well. Mukuro had kept him occupied the past few days running important errands for her. Not that he minded, pushing himself to his limits wasn't new to the three eyed demon, he actualy enjoyed it a little. He closed his eyes for a minute than opened them when he heard the door creak. He didn't have to look to know it was Mukuro who entered, along with Rhianon, her third-in-command who she had hired recently. If Hiei was dark, he was even darker. His skin looked like unpolished onyx, his hair was two shades lighter, a purplish-brown. Even his eyes were dark, a shade lighter than his hair. He stood behind Mukuro like a giant extention of her shadow, but Hiei had made certain to test his power, and the taller demon wasn't as fast.
They walked to the large couch across from him and sat down. Mukuro tucked a strand of fire-red hair behind her ear.
"Hiei,"Mukuro spoke,"I didn't expect you to return so quickly."
"I've gotten faster,"He said, a slight smirk on his usualy emotionless face.
"So I guessed,"She said, returning the smirk.
Rhianon, who seemed oblivious to their 'joke', shifted almost nervously in his seat.
Bolth Hiei and Mukuro noticed. Mukuro looked at him, Hiei didn't.
"Is something bothering you Rhianon?,"She asked quietly. The tall demon closed his eyes and shook his head silently. Neither of them pushed the issue, though it was obviously a lie.
"What's going on, why so urgent?,"Hiei said to the red haired lord.
Mukuro glanced at him, then stared at the stone floor,"Do you know what a familiar is?"
Hiei nodded,"A mythical creature desguised in a human body who can turn a demon into a god. Or so the legend says. Why?"
Mukuro's eyes rose to meet his,"There's a rumor that three have been found."
He raised an eyebrow,"Found? When?"
"I learned of it yesterday, they dissapeared two days ago. There is an idea as to where the three are, but we can't prove it right now."
"That's absurd, it has to be a hoax. They're a fantasy story."
"There is a possibility they're a fake,"A strange half smile appeared on her mouth,"But, if they are truly familiars then who ever has them under their controle would be impossible to defeat."
Hiei was starting to lose interest,"I paid no attention to those stories as a child, I didn't have the time. As far as I'm concerned any demon who needs to leach off the power of another being to make them self stronger should be hit upside the head with a sword hilt."
"I agree, but you are not curious at all?,"She leaned her elbow on the couch's arm and rested her chin in her hand,"I for one would like to see if it's true."
"The legend isn't even based on fact...,"He began.
"It is partly based on fact."
Hiei looked at Rhianon, at least he was someone who avoided talking unless there was something important to say. That was the one thing he admired about the tall demon.
He smirked",Really, would you like to elaborate on it?"
Rhianon nodded,"Around 15 hundred years ago in some unknown area there was an account of a female demon who could turn into pure flame itself. She was thought to be a fire demon, but it would take a rediculous amount of energy to turn one's body into an element. Questions were asked to the demons living nearby but to their knoledge no woman fitting the description ever existed there. It was belived she had found a familiar, and that was the result of fully bonding with one."
"Interesting,"Mukuro said thoughtfuly,"I've never heard that story."
"Hn, neither have I,"He stared intensly at Rhianon,"Why is it I always have the feeling you're much more than you seem?"
Rhianon's face remained unreadable,"Every living creature has its secrets."
Hiei scoffed at that. Why did it feel as if every one of Rhianon's observations were directed towards him? It was unnerving, and annoying. He hated being anyone's subject for analyzing. No matter, if Rhianon wanted to play mind games that was just fine, he had more important things to think about.
"So, if these familiars are real where do we tie in?,"Hiei said.
"We have the location of where we think they are being held,"She paused,"I want you two to go there and bring one back to me."
"Bring one here, what for?"
She smiled,"So I can see one for my self, and Yomi wants to see one as well."
Rhianon frowned,"It is said they look like normal humans. You cannot feel their spiritual energy without a special device, even then they have next to none. They only way to tell is by looking at their soul, it is not a human soul."
"That is where you two tie in, I need you both for this to work. Rhianon's knoledge of them and your magical eye."She said pointing to Hiei's forhead.
"The jagan can feel spiritual energy, I've never used it to view a soul, especially one that was neither demon nor human."
"That may be, but it never hurt to try,"Mukuro reached over and unrolled a large sheet of paper that was sitting on a small table to her left,"I'll give you the location and let you decide how to go about doing this. But don't be rushed just because you're bored, we don't know what kind of things are lurking in there."
She handed the unrolled paper to Hiei,"This is a map of the surrounding area and the two levels they managed to see in the underground facility. There are more than three levels. The main enterance is desguised as a large rock, there are two side entrances, one is guarded. The other is very hard to find, a trapdoor covered with moss. Unless you were searching for it, you would never notice it was there."
He studied it then looked at her,"Alberta, Canada? This is in the human world I take it."
"Yes. One of the northern 'countries', there aren't many humans living there."
Hiei nodded,"Fine. We leave tomorrow morning,"He stood up taking the map with him. He glanced at Rhianon who was also standing,"Is that fine with you?"
The taller demon gave the barest on nodds, then left as quietly as he came in.
Mukuro was still sitting, after Rhianon walked out, closing the door behind him, she spoke,"You don't mind working with him do you?"
"No, why would I?,"He said nonchalantly before leaving the room.
She closed her eyes,"Just wondering."
