YuYu Hakusho:
The Demon Familiars

*Author's note: Question: 'Why does everyone hate Mukuro? It never implied that she and Hiei were screwing eachother, he just worked for her, right? Sure he decided to stay there when she said he could leave, but still. It makes about as much sense as all the DBZ fans who despise Pan because they think she gets inbetween Trunks and Goten. Lighten up hardcore Kurama X Hiei fans, your couple is safe.'*
Thankyou for reading my rant. You may now begin the next chapter. :p

Ch.8

He sat alone in the dark bewildered by the ordeal from a few hours ago. She had been so close. He remembered the feeling of her breath against his eye. He had wanted nothing more than to flee the room, to rid himself of all those watching faces. Especially the girl and...Kurama. The expression Kurama held in his eyes was infuriating. Concern, concern for his well being. Kurama considered him an equal on the battlefield, but that was as far as it went. The fox spirit worried too much, even though he had a good reason to now. Hiei did not want an emotional councilor.
"Damn," He drove his elbow into the pillow next to him. Then he placed a hand on his throbbing forehead. His eye was being a pain in the ass, what the hell did it want? It was attracted to something that human girl possessed, but Hiei hadn't felt anything from her. No spiritual energy, not even a strong life force, what could have caused him to heal? He still refused to believe the legend of the familiars was true, despite all the evidence that was shoved in his direction. He did not want to admit that weak female had saved his life. It was embarrassing, not to mention irritating. She had no reason to help him, she didn't owe him anything, but now it meant he owed *her*. A life debt was not something he wished to incur to a human woman.
'Why me?' He sighed.
'I hate this. My life was fine how it was, uncomplicated. Why did I hope it would stay that way? I cursed myself by being happy.'
Hiei growled and stood up. If the jagan wanted to see the human again, fine. As long as it left him alone afterwards. It gladly located her for him. She was three stories up, sleeping. Good, that meant she wouldn't notice he was there.
He found her closed door and opened it silently. The girl was sound asleep, legs hanging off the edge of the bed. Her fingers were laced over her stomach, and her head turned toward the wall.
'At least she doesn't snore' He thought.
Hiei stood over her, watching her chest rise and fall with her breathing.
His eye sent a jolt down his spine. He hissed, then he realized it had the opposite effect when he was near Rhianon. It basically shut off then, it didn't like tall demon one bit. It still gave him a migraine, but for a different reason. Another jolt made him curse out loud. He froze when the woman grunted and rolled over on her side. She didn't awaken though.
He leaned down placing his hands on either side of her, careful not to put too much pressure on the bed. The jagan wanted him closer, the further he leaned down the less his head hurt. When his nose was practically brushing up against her cheek, he felt the eye start to pull at something. It did the same thing when it fed off spiritual energy, but she didn't have any. His third eye was draining an empty nothingness out of her. Then he felt a rush of power.
'What? Impossible, how could it have...?'
Just then she stirred in her sleep. The second her eyes began to open Hiei took off. He stopped near the door, where she wouldn't be able to see him. Except someone did see him. Kurama. The red head was standing with one foot in the doorway holding the knob. He had been so preoccupied with the human he hadn't realized Kurama was anywhere near him. The two stared at each other for a long time, until Hiei broke the silence.
"What?," He snarled at him.
If Kurama was taken aback by the rudeness it didn't show. No one was better at hiding their emotions than the fox.
"I didn't know you were in here," He said calmly.
"I was just leaving,"He gave the hint for Kurama to move, but he didn't. Instead the red head closed the door and stood in front of it.
"Did you feel the need to see her again?"
Hiei scowled," That's none of your business."
"I understand, but I'm responsible for her right now, I want to know what you were doing."
"Nothing," He drew the word out as harshly as possible.
Kurama stayed silent then said," I spoke with Rhianon on what to expect if you are the familiar's demon."
"And?"
"He explained that during the period when a familiar and their compatible have met the demon would feel compelled to be near them. The longer he or she is absent from their presence the weaker they will become."
Hiei raised an eyebrow," You're joking. That's absurd."
"Then why were you in here?,"Kurama asked.
Hiei sighed inwardly, there was no escaping the demon fox now. Kurama was ruthlessly persistent when he wanted to know something.
"I wasn't going to hurt her," He said," The jagan was driving me insane."
"Do you know why?"
"No."
"Hmmm...," Kurama said to himself," I wonder if..."
"If what?"
He paused for a second," It's nothing."
"Hn, that did not sound like nothing, what are you keeping from me fox?"
Hiei faced Kurama and glared up at him, although it was hard to act tough when the other man was half a foot taller.
Kurama met his glare with cool eyes," You'll have to ask Rhianon yourself for that information."
He wasn't going to budge.
"Fine,"Hiei spat," Then get out of my way."
The fox moved to the side and allowed the smaller demon to pass. Hiei slammed the door behind him.
'Bastard, who does he think he is?' Hiei glanced back at the closed door. Then hissed and walked away. Now he could try to sleep, maybe this time the dream would stay away. He doubted it.

Kurama sighed. The three eyed demon had serious issues to deal with. The fact that he was now a familiar's demon did not lessen the problem. He quietly walked around the corner to see Jordan sitting on the bed with her knees pulled to her chest.
"He was yelling because of me, right?" She asked, staring at the floor.
"Yes, but it wasn't your fault, it was mine," Kurama took a seat in the chair across from her.
"I kind of got the feeling he was watching me for some reason."
"I do not exactly know what he was doing, but I know he wouldn't hurt you on purpose."
"That's comforting, considering the 'wonderful smile' he gave me before he stormed out of the room last night," She smiled bitterly.
Kurama studied the young woman. She was pretty by human standards, but in the demon realm she would have been considered plain. She looked too normal, too ordinary. Most female demons who were thought of as beautiful had something uncommon to their appearance. Whether it was multi-colored eyes or hair, or a tail. Even Mukuro's half metal face was thought to be desirable. Perhaps if Hiei found her attractive...No, he wasn't that shallow. Kurama sighed again. He didn't want his friend to be hurt for being stubborn, but it was next to impossible to make the fire demon change his mind once he made a decision.
"Hey flowers, what's wrong?"
Kurama almost laughed at that. Jordan had picked out a nickname for him during her stay at Genkai's temple. He actually didn't mind it.
"Nothing serious."
She gave him a skeptical face,"Looked serious to me..."
Kurama smiled and rose out of the chair," I'll be back later. Yomi and Mukuro said they wish to speak with you again before Rhianon answers your questions."
"Ok," she shrugged. She flopped back onto the bed.
Kurama left the familiar alone and headed to meet Yomi in one of the lower floors.
Yomi was waiting for him in one of the lobbies facing a large, dark paned window. Kurama went to stand by him.
"Kurama,"He nodded his head in greeting.
"Yomi."
"How is our familiar doing?"
"Well. She was sleeping not long ago."
"Good. Have you spoken to Hiei yet?"
Kurama wondered if he should share the conversation they had in the woman's room," No, I haven't, why do you ask?"
"Our fire demon does not seem to very pleased he has a familiar. Mukuro spoke with him last night he was...resentful we asked her to save him. He told us he doesn't want in any way to be tied to a human."
"Yes, I thought as much. He did not have a charmed expression on his face when he left,"Kurama said quietly.
"Is there any way you could convince him otherwise? It would be a great help, Kurama."
"If you tell me what your true intentions are for them, yes."
"Our intentions are to witness what has not been glimpsed for over a thousand years, or perhaps never witnessed at all. We want to see a familiar bond with a demon."
Kurama stared at him,"Even if neither wish to participate?"
"That is why I asked you to help Kurama. Would you not like to see such a wondrous thing? It is said the true bonding of a familiar and a demon is absolutely beautiful to behold."
"Not at the expense of others, I'm afraid," He shook his head.
"A pity. But I do not see how it could be a negative experience for either Hiei or the familiar. They will both become much more than they are now."
Kurama turned around," If you believe that, then you don't know Hiei at all."
He quietly walked out, before he closed the door behind him Yomi spoke.
"We will see Kurama ,we will see."

The dark place returned in Hiei's dream. He was sitting on the same glittering rock as he always was. Except this dream was different somehow. It looked the same, the never ending black nothing, and the rock sitting in the midst of all that nothing, but what was it that he'd noticed a second ago? Hiei froze, there was someone sitting behind him. Without looking he reached his arm back and felt the area around him. What ever it was it felt like animal fur, he pulled it forward and glanced down. It was hair, dark purple hair. A scraping sound against the rock let him know the thing had moved, then he felt an arm drape around his neck. It was her. The creature that always called to him from the mist, but never showed her face. A second arm joined the first and they fell to his lap. Hiei wanted to see just how frightening this thing was. He slowly turned his head, and found himself staring into a pair of golden yellow eyes.
He awoke in a cold sweat, the gold eyes burned spots into his vision ,almost as if he'd really seen them.
'Why me? What the hell do you want from me?'
He rolled onto his side.
"Is it just a dream, what is it?," He whispered to himself.
Then a jab of pain shot through his head. He pressed his thumbs to his temples. A second jab caused him to grunt and convulse. His third eye showed him an image of the familiar still sleeping. He knew what it wanted.
"No, I am not going back. Leave me alone!"
The answer to that was another stab of pain so severe it made him dizzy. He wanted just then to rip the damn thing out, but he knew all too well it would kill him.
"Ahhh!,"He growled in frustration. He leaned up on all fours, gripping the sheet in his fists," I will not be controlled by a magic eye!"
Another jab through his head and he collapsed onto his stomach, breathing labored. Out of options he crawled off the bed and got to his feet.
"Fine," He hissed.
Hiei managed to make it out the door and almost to the stairs when the pain finally overwhelmed him and he collapsed against the wall. His head was pounding.
'Dammit, what's wrong with me?'
If anyone found him slumped against the wall, wearing nothing but a pair of lose black pants, he would be embarrassed as hell. Just as the thought ran through his mind, he saw someone open the door to the stairs. The person stared, mouth open, at him on the floor.
"Hiei?"

(Author's note: Guess who found him. Go ahead, guess. Did you guess? Next chapter's coming soon so you'll find out one way or the other. Thank's to everyone who's read it so far. All four of you. :p )
