The Demon Familiars
Ch.7
After Jordan voiced her decision to leave and go to the Demon World the three bewildered men had stayed behind in the grove of trees.
"I don't believe it,"Yusuke said scuffing his shoe against the ground,"She's either really brave, or really loony. I can't figure out which."
"It's a shame we couldn't help her with this anymore then we did,"Kurama stared at the night sky and his mind shifted to what Mukuro had said.
'Hiei is dying'
'Hiei' He thought solemnly' What has happened to you?'
He thought about the last conversation they'd shared before parting ways. Hiei had asked him to give Yukina his gem, and to tell her that her brother was dead. Kurama had convinced him to keep it until he felt confident enough to tell Yukina himself. That was the last he'd seen or heard of the fire demon. Until now, but the news he received wasn't what he'd expected. He'd sort of subconsciously declared himself the younger demon's guardian. So Hiei being this badly hurt meant he'd failed. Of course, he knew he couldn't help him being a dimension apart, but the guilt had nothing to do with logic. He thought of the demon as a younger brother, and you usually don't let your younger brother get maimed.
"Kurama...Mission Control to Kurama, you still with us?"
Kurama found both Yusuke and Touya watching him. He smiled," Sorry, I didn't mean to daydream, I was just thinking."
Yusuke laced his fingers behind his head," About what?"
"Nothing important," His voice sounded distant.
"Ok, if you say so...,"Yusuke shrugged," I'm going to see if Genkai's awake, see ya."
They said goodbye, then Yukuse plodded off leaving the two demons alone.
Kurama sighed, he didn't fool Yusuke at all, the young man was smarter than he gave himself credit for.
Touya spoke," Should we return now?"
"Yes, let's go."

The morning came and the group was still in shock after they heard the news from Yusuke. Even Botan was glum. She and Genkai were in another room talking with Jordan. The two demon lords and Rhianon waited outside, Yusuke was with them. He didn't know where Kurama was, he hadn't seen him since last night's incident. The fox spirit was probably off pulling himself together. Whenever Kurama was bothered by something he went where there was the most plants. They had completely opposite ways of dealing with stress. Yusuke usually punched something, while muttering every swear and vulgar phrase he could think of.
They turned to see the door slide open. Botan walked to the steps," She's ready."
Mukuro nodded.
"Excellent,"Yomi said.
"I do have a request though, before she leaves with you," Genkai joined Botan on the porch, Jordan was behind her. She had changed her clothes, and was no longer in the bathrobe. She was now wearing all black.
"What is your request?," Mukuro answered.
"I want one of the demons here to be allowed to accompany her the entire time she is in the Demon realm."
"Reasonable. Have you chosen yet?," Yomi said.
Genkai paused, then said,"Kurama."
'Kurama?' Yusuke thought 'But where is he?'
Then his question was answered when the red haired demon joined the three women on the porch, he had been in the room with them.
"Very well."
Yusuke ran to Genaki. He bent down and whispered to her," What's going on?"
"I want to keep an eye on them. Kurama is going to report back to us. If they pull anything too extravagant we'll take it to Koenma."
"Think it'll work, they aren't stupid enough to think we're not planning anything."
"Of course they know, but if they refuse it makes it too obvious, that's why I asked, dimwit," Genaki snapped.
Yusuke held up his hands in defeat,"Ok, ok, take it easy, sheesh."
He then looked at Kurama, who was staring off into space. He felt bad for him a little, Kurama hardly took anything personally but when he did it turned him into a mess.
"Are we finished here? I'm afraid he doesn't have much time left,"
Mukuro said calmly.
Genkai gave Kurama a glance, and the fox spirit nodded. She whispered to Jordan, and the dark haired woman nodded as well.
Yusuke moved aside so the two could get down the steps. He touched Kurama's shoulder,"Be careful alright? Good luck."
The red head smiled," Don't worry about me, Yusuke,"He lowered his eyes," I'm not the one who needs it."
"Kurama...,"Yusuke said sadly.
Kurama walked away without letting him finish. Yusuke watched the five until they were a spec that faded into the trees.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The demon lords led Jordan and Kurama to an opening into the Demon World. Jordan was nervous about walking through a really dark hole in a brick wall. Kurama assured her she would be fine, but Jordan's argument to that was she didn't like walking through anything if she didn't have the slightest guess of what was on the other side.
She asked Mukuro where it would leave them, she was answered 'a hallway'.
A very long, dark, and creepy hallway, with carvings on the walls and ceiling, and a swirly black stone floor.
'Very neo-gothic`, She observed. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad while she was there, at least they had interesting taste in decorating.
Kurama insisted she hold onto his arm. She knew he was just being a gentleman and kind of overprotective, but it was still irritating. Jordan barely knew him. Still she'd make the best of it , and riddle him with questions.
"So, I take it you know this 'Hiei' guy, right?,"She asked him.
"Yes,"He said softly.
"Yeah, that's what I thought, so...out of curiosity what's he like?,"She grinned, hoping she didn't just ask a personal question. She didn't know what to expect with demons.
"I'm not sure if you really want to know," Jordan was relieved when he smiled back," He is sort of...eccentric."
"That word could mean a million different things, I want to know what his personality is like."
"Personality, uhmm...that's definitely not what he's known for,"Kurama seemed reluctant to answer. That made Jordan want to push him into telling her more.
"What, is he scary?"
"To some yes, if he chooses to be. He's not very...,"He sighed,"I apologize if there's no way to explain him to you. You'll just have to wait and see so to speak."
"I get it, he's complicated."
"In a way yes, but only to those who don't understand him."
Jordan thought back to the dream she had. She was pretty sure that was him she saw. Hiei. The one with the glowing third eye. If it *was* him she understood what Kurama meant by Hiei being 'eccentric'. Eccentric as in he was a high and mighty little bastard. Or that was the impression she got from the dream.
Mukuro lead them through to a small room, it reminded her of an office of sorts. On the other side was a door. Mukuro unlocked it and held it open until everyone had gone through. If Mukuro relocked it Jordan didn't remember, the room they were in was too distracting.
There was only one light on, it was over a large metal table. The table was tilted slightly downwards, and it was padded. She thought of the setup of the room and remembered all of the sci-fi movies she rented where a character was abducted, and the 'examination area' looked like this.
She guessed Hiei was the one lying on the table, all she saw was a dark red sheet covering his body. The angle of the table obscured her view of anything above the waist.
"Is that him?," She already knew it was but felt inclined to ask anyway.
"Yes,"Mukuro said.
Jordan walked a few inches forward, then to the left so she could see.
She glanced back a Kurama, who gave her a worried look but didn't say anything. Jordan assumed the demon was just as anxious to see what kind of condition Hiei was in.
She wasn't shocked because she felt bad for him, she had never seen a corpse before, and that's what he looked like. His skin was almost white and it had a grayish tone to it, his veins shone through like blue thread. All of his eyes were shut, and it didn't look like he was breathing.
When she found her voice, it cracked, despite her will to steady it,"W-why is he like this?"
Mukuro stood beside her,"When he was injured his body attempted to heal itself by using his spiritual energy, but he didn't have enough. The venom secreted by the creature he fought damaged his eye. The jagan still tried to heal itself so it started to use his life force instead. The only way to stop it is to remove the eye, but in the condition he is in right now the operation would kill him. Rhianon explained to me one of the things a familiar is capable of is to heal the demon they are connected to. Do you think you can?"
Jordan stared down at the poisoned demon thinking only a miracle could have possibly saved him, but she wasn't about to say it out loud.
"I can try, you might want to stand back though, I don't know what it's going to do."
Mukuro did what she advised.
She found his bare wrist uncovered by the sheet and slowly placed her fingertips against it. Nothing happened, so she curled her hand around his cold flesh. There was still no reaction. Jordan leaned over the table. The lid of the third eye was dicolored, almost rotted it seemed. But like rubberneck at a car accident she felt compelled to see what the rest of it was like. Forming a triangle with her hands she walked around until she was over his head and covered most of his face with them. Only the eye was left.
Jordan watched as the eye opened and strained to look at her. It had a reddish film veiling it and it didn't look very pleasant. Funny thing was the eye seemed *aware*, almost as if it had a mind of its own. Jordan suddenly didn't want her hands anywhere near it. She went to remove them, but couldn't. A wave of panic swept through her when she saw that Hiei's hands were now holding her wrists. Despite him being near death and half conscious he had a grip like iron. He slowly lifted her hands off and opened his eyes. They were blood shot and feverish, and he was still not fully awake.
Hiei pulled her arms down to his waist forcing her face directly over his.
Before she could react he transferred his hands to the back of her neck.He pulled her head down until their noses were touching. That put his lips close to her forehead, and his third eye close to her mouth.
The same burning sensation returned. It flowed up through her throat and down her body. Was the eye causing it she wondered, she wasn't sure.
Then, like before, the pain left and it was replaced by a tingling warmth.
That happened then Jordan had went unconscious, but instead it made her feel drunk, like she'd downed a couple of mudslides.
Hiei gasped, and released his hold on her head. Jordan slumped to the floor, one hand gripping the tables' edge. She watched him sit up, then he turned and stared at her. He was back to normal, eye and all. He didn't seem as fuzzy headed as she was, and he didn't look at all happy to be there.
His ruby red eyes seethes with anger, underneath was another emotion though, carefully hidden. Jordan was at a loss, she had nothing helpful to say. Hiei jumped off the table, and Jordan saw for the first time that he had been completely nude. No one else in the room seemed to notice or care, so she pretended not to. He wrapped the sheet around his waist and stalked out.
Jordan let go of the table and leaned her face into her hands. She wasn't sure how long she remained there on the floor, but heard footsteps a while later. Then a hand on her shoulder.
"Are you alright?,"It was Kurama.
Jordan nodded, not trusting her voice. Kurama offered her a hand up and she took it, not caring if it was a guy who was helping her.
"They have a room for you," He said softly.
They passed Yomi and Mukuro who said nothing, they appeared to be lost in their thoughts. Kurama lead her down a hallway and a flight of stairs before he opened a door and took her inside.
"I'm in the room next to yours, if you need anything knock."
"Ok."
He shut the door behind him. Jordan sat down on the large bed in the middle of the room. She let gravity take over and fell asleep a few minutes later.
