The Demon Familiars
(Author's note: Sorry for the short chapter, I'm kind of slowing down plot wise. I have to think of more stuff to write about, so the updates are going to thin out for a while. But I'm not bailing out on the story, not on one this long.)
Ch.14
Kurama held back a laugh when the fire demon's face turned red.
"Embarrassed again? I was only joking, Hiei."
The demon growled and looked at the floor. Kurama blinked, the room was very misty all of a sudden. It seeped out from under the bathroom door. Jordan had only been using the shower for a few minutes, it wouldn't have made that much steam. Unless it was extremely hot.
"Hiei," The demon said staring at the closed door.
"What?"
"Do you see this?"
The smaller demon glanced up at the clouds," Hn, what is she doing now?"
"I don't know."
Kurama walked into the room and tapped his knuckle on the dark wood," Jordan?"
No reply came and the fox knocked louder this time," Familiar, are you alright?"
Still no answer.
Hiei snorted and hit his fist on the door," If you are alive open the door."
"Go away!"
"Bah, stupid girl," Hiei hissed," Open the damn door!"
"Quiet, Hiei. That is no way to treat a woman."
"Hn."
Kurama cleared his throat," Are you hurt?"
A pause, then," No."
"Good. Will you open the door?"
"I'm fine, leave me alone."
"That is not what I asked. Will you open the door?"
Another pause, this time longer.
"Wait...who are you?"
"What?," Kurama asked," Who...am I?"
"Yeah, who are you? I've never heard your voice before in my life."
"Oh?...oh."
Kurama felt embarrassed. He forgot he was in his demon form, and Jordan had never seen him like that, much less heard him talk.
"I am Kurama."
"Huh? No you're not, do you think I'm stupid?"
Hiei snorted.
"I heard that gremlin," She said.
He shook his head," Come to the door and smell him then, I'm sure he'll be no different than when he's in his human form."
There was silence, then footsteps, and then silence again.
"Oh, it *is* you."
The woman opened the door and followed Kurama up with her eyes, then smirked," You never struck me as being a blonde."
Kurama smiled back, "Everyone tells me that same thing."
She stood directly in front of him, she barely reached his chin, "And you're taller."
The familiar pointed to Hiei and snickered," So, how come you don't get any taller?"
Hiei glared at her, then stalked past them and shut the bathroom door.
"It was a joke!," She called to the closed door.
The sound of running water came a few seconds later.
"That guy is such a dick," she sighed.
The fox demon shook his head," He's just not use to being teased, that's all."
"He's a sore looser is what he is."
Kurama smiled, Hiei had most definitely met his match, just not in the romantic way.

After the familiar left the two element demons had remained at Genkai's temple just in case they were needed, since Kurama was no longer there. Neither of them knew if Koenma would suddenly discover where the other two were being held and send Yusuke to bring them to the spirit world. The small ruler was slightly miffed that they had allowed the woman to leave without him talking to her first. Plus his father wasn't very happy with him either because of it.
Both the wind and ice masters were sitting in a tall tree. Jin was asleep, stretched out on a branch above Touya's head. The ice demon was recalling the first time he'd seen the familiar at the place they were sent to rescue them from. He'd received the oddest sensation when he picked her up. At first he thought it was from the demon blood smeared all over her, but if it was Hiei's then it didn't feel right. It hadn't been the energy of a fire demon, and yet he couldn't describe it at all. If it was a demon's power then it didn't belong to the familiar, she had a human body and aura. What could it have been? He was almost tempted to ask Hiei if he had felt that from her, but the fire demon wasn't someone you would waltz up to and start a conversation with. Kurama didn't noticed it or he would have said so.
Jin never went closer than five feet from the woman, she had no idea what his ability was, and wouldn't be much help.
When Genkai had taken her from the ice demon and into another room he'd become sick. Almost as if his spiritual energy drained out him. Even now he felt drained, but he'd tested his power level and it returned to its maximum over five hours ago. Demons could not contract a virus of any kind from the human realm, and if a virus of the demon world had been present Jin and Kurama would have caught it as well. He blew an icy breath at a cluster of pine needles and they were covered in frozen crystals. It projected the setting sun's rays into small rainbows glints on the tree and Touya's face. His frozen touch could kill any life form on Earth, a human's body would grow cold laying against him. Then they would cease to function, and die.
He tapped the frozen plant with one finger and it shattered into a dozen pieces, then drifted onto the branches below.
"Frozen forever...forgive me...," He whispered, though he wasn't speaking to anyone in particular.
Touya closed his eyes and drifted off into sleep, maybe after he woke the ill feeling would be gone.

Hiei and Kurama left an hour ago, leaving Jordan alone. Neither of the demons mentioned anything about the six inch crack in the shower tiles, or asked why she turned the bathroom into a steamroom. A demon woman came and changed the bed on Mukuro's request. The female lord seemed very pleased with her, and was surprisingly polite when entering the room to speak. The other demon lord had accompanied her. Jordan never learned his name, and he never offered to tell her, so she called him Mr. Ears instead. Though she never said the name out loud, because it would not have been a smart move on her part.
The bed sheets were now a deep royal blue, and matched her t-shirt. It would be five days that night since her life took a sharp turn to the left, and straight off the road. Five days she'd been separated from her family, it was the longest she'd ever been away from them all together. Knowing them her mother would have the entire section of Queens looking for her by now. She smiled inwardly at that comforting thought.
Jordan missed her home. She wanted to hear pigeons and the cursing taxi drivers outside her bedroom window every morning. She even missed her next door neighbor's loud-mouthed Yorkie, Miss Arkadelia, who hated her. Hell, she even missed hearing her dad's flatulence while he walked down the stairs every Saturday at noon to make coffee. She snickered remembering each time her mother would yell in disgust whenever the hallway smelled like a sulfur pit. Jordan sighed, if she never saw her family again then memories would be all that was left.
'I should have stayed home that night,' She thought,' It figures the one time I go to my class I get nabbed by a bunch of demons. I have the worst luck.'
She checked her wrist watch. It was almost 8:15 PM in New York, the sun would be going down soon. On a Thursday she usually went to bed around ten PM, but after the rumble with three-eyes she was exhausted.
Jordan curled up on the bed and fell asleep.
The same dream from two days ago returned. Jordan was standing by the same huge glittering rock surrounded by vast nothing. She glanced up at the top and felt relieved when Hiei wasn't there.
'Yes. Finally, no gremlin to drive me insane.'
Jordan shivered, the place was colder than it was the last time. Much colder.
'Artic ice berg, it wasn't any where as freezing as this before.'
She walked around the rock, rubbing her arms. Then stopped, she wasn't alone.
"Hey, wait a sec, what are *you* doing here?," She asked in surprise.
A pair of aqua-blue eyes blinked at her. The dream had just taken a detour down the highway of deranged irony, and there were no u-turns allowed.
What the hell was another demon doing in her dream? He was leaning against the rock, arms behind his back. Very calm, he made no sudden movement, or expression, or anything for that matter. He just watched. After a few seconds the uncomcortable silence took over and she couldn't keep her mouth shut any longer.
Jordan had been told his name by Genkai but had forgotten it.
"Uh, What was your name again?"
"Touya," Came the reply.
"Oh."
More silence.
"Well, Have you ever had a dream like this before?"
The demon shook his head.
"So, am I in your dream, or are you in mine?"
"Mine."
She frowned," How can you guys tell?"
He closed his eyes and shrugged.
Jordan sighed and sat down on the dark floor. She was getting even less of a conversation out of this one, but at least he wasn't being mean. She studied his appearance and decided to ask how he got his hair to stay spiked like that. She didn't receive much of an answer.
