Prologue

2,000 Years

It was a sunny day, not a single cloud in the azure, endless sky. A gentle breeze was blowing, rustling the trees and bushes that surrounded a small lake with clear water.

~

A little girl with her brown hair done in short pigtails sat at the edge of a small dock that went out over the water. She was swinging her tiny feet over the side, admiring her newly sewn pink and gold sundress that reached her ankles. She tilted her head to one side before standing up and looking over her shoulder. “Heru-aniki!” she called with her hands cupped around her mouth.

~

A teenage boy’s head popped out from behind a bush, he had dark brown hair like her, but his eyes were a bright crimson with ca like pupils. “Hm?” He said lazily emerging, “What Mura-chan?”

~

She pouted at the nickname before shaking it off, “It’s a nice day, ne?” She twirled back around so she was facing the lake, her dress ruffled in the breeze as she did so.

~

He walked closer to her, shrugging. He stopped next to her and replied in a tired sigh, “I suppose so.” He couldn’t help, but thinking everyday was like this here. Always sunny, always cheerful.

~

She seemed to know what he was thinking. “Every day’s nice though, isn’t it?” She blew some stray strands of hair out of her face. “Almost too nice, like we’re stuck in paradise or maybe this is really a nightmare?” She muttered the last part so he wouldn’t hear her.

~

“Don’t tell me you just noticed that…”

~

She stuck her tongue out at him before giggling into her hands, “You’re so blunt Heru-aniki!” She then followed his blank gaze across where she saw some multi colored fish swimming. “I’ve never seen rain before though…”

~

“It isn’t that great,” he said quietly. Rain was rain, it couldn’t be simpler than that. It was just small globules of water falling from the sky on a cloudy day, he didn’t get why she was so fascinated by it.

~

That didn’t stop her from frowning at him, “Heru-aniki?” He purple eyes glistened in the sunlight like huge jewels.

~

“Hm?”

~

“Will you take me somewhere where it rains someday? I really want to see it.”

~

He turned his head and looked at his little half sister, her bright purple eyes staring intently at him. That’s why he had given her the nickname in the first place, those big purple eyes. He put a hand on her head and said gently, “Maybe, one day…”

~

She beamed, “Really? You promise?

~

He didn’t answer, he just smiled down at her. She didn’t know that he couldn’t promise her something like that, only he and their mother had known the difficult life that would be hers. She wasn’t an ordinary hanyou, in fact the very union of her mother and father had been the greatest taboo of them all. But their mother was dead and he was the only one left to protect her. He had promised their mother on her deathbed that he would do anything he could to keep her safe, but he doubted how long he could protect the young hanyou from others and herself.

~

He sat down on the dock with his legs crossed and she did the same, both transfixed with the silence that was now ringing in their ears.

~

“Heru-aniki?” She asked after what seemed like an hour of quiet.

~

“Nn?” He leaned back on his palms and stifled a yawn.

~

She put her hands in her lap and half closed her eyes sadly, “You don’t have to take me somewhere where it rains if you don’t want to…”

~

He faced her, clearly surprised. “What makes you think I don’t want to?”

~

“So you mean you will?” She seemed cheered up by the thought.

~

He nodded slowly, “Yea, I will…someday…”

Her long brown hair was draped over her shoulders to cover up her chest. She was naked with her arms chained over her head to the cave wall behind her. Her eyes were the color of dark amethysts, but were now void of any of the sparkle they had previously held when she was younger. In the beginning they quivered with fear and uncertainly, but now they were as still stone. Staring off into the blackness of the cave.

~

There were also rusty chains encircling her body, enabling any type of movement. They wrapped around her legs, binding them together tightly and they twisted around her body up to her neck where a metal collar was placed.

~

It was very cold in there too, she often shivered and her teeth chattered, but not anymore. She was used to it, used to being so incredibly cold.

~

Her pale skin, white as snow from not being in the sun, was scared with cuts and bite marks that the little critters in the dark cavern had given her. She had used to flinch when one saw fit to bite her, but after awhile what difference did one small bite make? Her emotional pain was much worse and much more consuming than that.

~

Two thousand years of imprisonment could do that to a girl, but didn’t know that she’d been there that long or how long she’d actually been there, locked away from everything else. She couldn’t hear the birds chirping, the wind howling, the trickling streams and she even missed the sound of the night with the crickets filling the air.

~

It was like eternity for her. She didn’t know the difference between days, nights, weeks, months and years. All time seemed to blend together or stop completely.

~

There was no sunlight. Just herself and the darkness. Not the best or most desired company in the least. She’d been alone before, but never this alone. Never this isolated. Chained and thrown into darkness without anything or anyone.

~

Did the crime really fit the punishment?-she couldn’t ever remember what she had done though she had done many bad things.

~

She had had a lot of time to think about things there all by herself. Many things, her life for one. She recalled every painful and happy moment in sequential order over and over again, trying to find out how things could have led to this. She did some terrible things, even she couldn’t deny that ,but weren’t they all part of her demonic nature after all? She killed people, stole priceless items and reeked havoc with her brother and his gang, but didn’t they all deserve this as well? Why was only she serving this sentence of hell and misery?

~

Her mind lingered on her parents, her mother and the father she had never met. All she knew of him was that he and her mother’s union was forbidden at all costs but, she was never told why.

~

Maybe that’s how she ended up where she was because of her parents…and what they did.

~

No, if anything that was only part of it. Her mother never meant for her to life such a life, she wanted only happiness for her. Her mother wanted to protect her just like her brother did but, her mother didn’t live very long.

~

Then she thought of her brother, her sweet kind and helpful older brother…Heru. Even to the end he had been so caring, so nice. When all the other youkai made fun of her when she was little he was there for her like he always had been until now. He had done anything and everything for her, she missed him so much.

~

He was probably still alive with his gang somewhere, maybe moping about the loss of his sister or maybe finally feeling relieved that he didn’t have to watch over her anymore.

~

Her eyes flashed at the thought before she returned to gazing off into the darkness. She was being childish about the whole thing but, then again she was technically a child in youkai years. Barely one hundred years, compared to the elders that was nothing, but that was already a lifetime for a human. To be more accurate, she was actually equivalent to a human teenager. Almost an adult, but still considered a child.

~

Suddenly, after being lost in thought for so long, she heard a rumbling sound. She heard the rock move and saw as light gradually poured into her prison.

~

She squinted her eyes, she never remembered the sun being that bright before. Then again, this was the first time she’s seen the sun for a very long time. It almost blinded her. She felt the warm heat instantly fill the cave, the cold vanished. The hair on the back of her neck stood up.

~

A figure stood in the entrance way, she couldn’t tell whether it be male or female. From the way it stood and the way it’s figure looked, it seemed a little of both. She could see I had long hair and high cheekbones but, the shoulders were broad. The glow of the sunlight made almost a godlike aura around the being like it had descended from the very heavens above.

~

“Yuumei,” the figure said tenderly. Even from the voice she couldn’t tell, it sounded syrupy like a nymph yet it was low pitched. Its hand extended out to her in a loving manner, “It is time to leave this place and get your second chance at life…”
