Chapter 1

Introducing Shimizu Ichigo!

She was fifteen now, in human years that is.

~

She was curled by her window sill on a big round, blue and comfortable chair. It was raining outside, she could hear it softly tap against the window and on the roof. There were brown boxes in the corner of her room, each labeled with black marker indicating their contents. The only thing she had bothered to unpack was this chair, after all she didn’t feel like doing much.

~

Her outside appearance was somewhat different than she used to look like. She still had dark brown hair, but on the right side ,by her ear, she had a small chunk of naturally atomic pink hair. She supposed it was the youkai in her that made some unique things about her. Her hair wasn’t long anymore either, not like it used to be, it was cut extremely short and straight with bangs that shadowed her eyes and hid them sometimes. It reached down to about her ears in front and was about two inches longer in the back. Her eyes were a dark blue with some hardly noticeable purple flecks in them. She missed her amethyst eyes. She was still short, barely over 5’2, three inches taller than her human mother. And skinny, something her mother constantly badgered her about. She hadn’t hit the hundred pound mark yet, she concluded from that that she had an extremely fast metabolism.

~

She heaved a sigh and folded her arms across her chest. She had on a black hoodie, pink and black checkered lounge pants with Badtzmaru slippers. The alternate clothing style was her thing.

~

The door to her room opened. Her mother, a small woman with medium length black hair and very dark brown eyes, popped her head in, “Do you need any help Ichigo?” She sounded eager.

~

She shook her head bluntly in response, “No, I’m fine.” She’d get around to unpacking…eventually.

~

Her mother bit her bottom lip, “Alright then.” She then left closing the door silently behind her.

~

Ichigo grumbled at her human name though she was more or less used to it by now. Shimizu Ichigo. It repeated itself in her mind over and over. It felt like being branded, like it was burned into her brain with that hot metal stick thing, she couldn’t remember what it was called.

~

Her eyes continued to look at through the window at the rain. Something she thought she’d never get to see was now so annoying. A constant reminder of her dear brother, Hiru, who she hadn’t seen or heard from in ages.

~

She had tried to runaway to find him but, it occurred to her she didn’t know where to look. So she stayed with the human family consisting of her mother, two little brothers and a father that lived in California. Her parents had been divorced for six years and she and her brothers lived with their mother in Japan. Her two younger brothers, Ryoichi and Haru, were two annoying brats. Ryoichi was ten and Haru was nine although they looked like they could pass as twins despite their different personalities.

~

They had moved from a small town in the middle of nowhere of Hokkaido to here. A busy city with lots of people even though they moved into the residential district and not an apartment in the city. Their new house was bigger than their old one, Ryoichi and Haru didn’t have to share a room and she got a room with a small private bathroom. Way better than their old house with only one bathroom.

~

The reason for the move was simple. She’d pass the entrance exams for high school, which was optional, and made it into one of the best schools in Japan. Meio Private Academy. It was supposed to be quite prestigious, meaning lots of smart kids and what not. Not that she cared, school was the last thing on her mind. She didn’t mean to pass the exams to get in but, it just worked out that way.

~

She was, even how unintentional it was, the model student. Smart, athletic and a teacher’s pet on occasion. Her scores were always nationally ranked in the top ten without the slightest effort on her part. Life was simply either too easy or too painful. It wasn’t hard, just painful.

~

The door to her room abruptly burst open and Ryoichi and Haru barged in, apparently Ryo was chasing his younger brother.

~

“You idiot, Haru!” Ryoichi yelled as he ran after Haru who had tried to hid behind her chair but, to no avail. He was flailing his arms around like a maniac, “I‘m gonna kill you stupid!!”

~

She rolled her eyes and didn’t respond. She thought they’d go away if she showed no interest but, they were still in there after a minute or so. An uneasy silence continued as Ryoichi glared at Haru angrily.

~

“I didn’t mean to!” Haru whined still trying to hid behind the chair.

~

“Oh really? So it just broke on it’s own then?”

~

“Yeah! Yeah!”

~

“Stupid liar!”

~

Ichigo sat there with her hands over her ears and narrowed eyes, a dull expression on her face. The things she put up with…

~

It wasn’t long before the two boys were wrestling on her floor, both trying to induce some type of bodily harm to one another. Normally she would have found this amusing but, not today. They were yelling at each other, punching each other and trying to gain the upper hand in the fight. It was such a commotion she didn’t understand why her mother didn’t come up to break them up like she usually did.

~

Ichigo couldn’t take it anymore.

~

“Both of you!” She shouted standing up on her feet, “Shut the hell up!” Her hands were clenched into fists and her teeth were gritted.

~

The siblings froze, Ryoichi had Haru in a headlock and Haru was trying to bite his arm. Both could see the flashing frustration in her eyes.

~

She pried them apart and lifted both of them a few inches off of the ground, she still had some of her previous demon strength thankfully, before dropping them on the hard wooden floor.

~

“No more fighting,” she ordered quietly, putting her hands on her hips. The glower she sent them clearly meant ‘now, get the hell out of my room!’

~

The scampered over other and fell out into the hallway.

~

“It was all Haru’s fault-” Ryoichi started with his hand on the doorknob.

~

“Ryoichi…” she emitted a deep growl from her throat.

~

“Eek!” He squeaked and sweatdropped before slamming the door shut.

~

That was family life for you and she hated it. They fought about everything. TV, toys, video games, movies, etc. You name it and they could found something about it to fight over. Typical boys.

~

She remembered sometimes when she had to cup their ears or pinch their cheeks to get them to stop arguing, even now she still had to do that on occasion. Did human male adolescents ever grow up? Or did they stay the same forever? She shivered at the prospect of having to put up with Ryoichi and Haru forever not that she planned to. This whole human thing was only temporary…or at least she hoped…

VOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOV FLASHBACK!!! VOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOV

“Yuumei, come with me…” the figure called out.

~

Slowly, Yuumei stood up. Her legs were shaking from not being able to stand up for so long. Her body began trembling, she had no idea what was going on. Who was that? Had that person come to finally release her of this hell? Or maybe to bestow a new punishment upon her? All of her thoughts on this scared her.

~

“I’m not to hurt you, please come closer. We need to talk.”

~

Carefully, she took one step. Then another, then another. Her fear subsided only a little. When she got closer she had to keep herself from gasping. The figure became clearer and she saw who it was.

~

“Ayumu…” she whispered quietly. She had seen this demon before only once, a few days after her mother passed away. Ayumu wasn’t your typical demon though, Ayumu was a hermaphrodite. Though she preferred to be referred to as a woman and there wasn’t really anything male about her. She had long golden locks, almond shaped pink eyes and perfectly tan skin. She was tall as well and had many golden hoops in each ear. The only part that was male was that thing between her legs, other than that she was quite ethereal.

~

“It’s been a long time kiddo,” Ayumu smiled gently at her.

~

Yuumei looked down at the ground, not saying a word. It was embarrassing to be seen like this, dirty and covered in scabs. After a few minutes she dared to look up and asked, “Why are you here?” She shielded her eyes from the sunlight with her hand.

~

“Ah, that…” Ayumu muttered breathlessly, glancing briefly at Yuumei‘s eyes which were glimmering like precious stones. She then ran a hand through her golden hair, the rings on her fingers glinted brightly in the sunlight. “I was a good friend of your mother’s Yuumei but, I bet you already knew that.”

~

She nodded, only half caring. What did that have to do with anything?

~

“Your mother wanted to me look after you when your brother couldn’t,” Ayumu continued, furrowing her brows though it was only half true, Yuumei’s mother had asked her to do that but, she never had any intention of doing it. Yuumei was a heretical child after all. “The things you did were terrible, there’s nothing you can do to repent for those sins. Even Koenma-sama dreads doing this but, I’ve personally come to tell you that your sentence is up.”

~

Yuumei twitched slightly at those words. This couldn’t be for real…her freedom? That was her dream for so many years and now it was finally in her grasp.

~

“However,” the elder demon went on raising a finger in front of her, “there is a condition that you must follow. Koenma-sama feels that this will allow you to understand the pain you gave others, you have two choices.”

~

“What?” She gave a surprised look.

~

Ayumu frowned, “Don’t give me that face. Nobody made you become a mercenary, an assassin, a thief or a compulsive gambler. Your two choices are these: take a job helping out Koenma-sama and his Reikai Tantei, Sensui, OR you can be reborn as a human and live out a human life until you learn what it is like to truly care about somebody except for yourself. Then maybe you’ll be returned to your hanyou body, emphasis on maybe. Those are your only two options or you can stay in that cave until the end of time. It’s your choice really.”

~

The choice was obvious. There was no chance in hell that she’d slink as low to became that stupid ruler’s flunky.

~

She closed her eyes and exhaled sharply while saying her answer, “I guess…I’ll be a human then…” She reopened her eyes and stared at Ayumu anxiously.

~

Ayumu arched an eyebrow, “Really? Are you sure? No take backs now.” She hadn’t anticipated her decision however, she couldn’t deny it wouldn’t be entertaining to watch the child struggle in the human realm. She had no idea what she was in for.

~

Yuumei didn’t need to be warned, she felt like she was prepared for whatever Ningenkai could throw at her but, was she really?

VOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOV END FLASHBACK!!! VOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOV

What a rotten decision she had made. Being a flunky would at least be more fun than this. At least she would’ve been aloud to kill something.

~

This human skin, as she called it, was less than desirable.

~

Now she was stuck here with two annoying brothers and an overly passive mother and a slacker father. This was making her miserable.

~

She was used to such a fast past life style, everything seemed to be going extremely slowly now. Even after the move.

~

She thought there would be some excitement but, there wasn’t any.

~

Human school was pointless, classmates were stupid and family was a joke to her.

~

She heaved a sigh while flopping back down on her chair, draping her arms over its edges and sprawling her legs out in front of her.

~

Lazily, she adjusted herself so that she could face the window again. The rain was still coming down but, in torrents now.

~

She heard her cell phone ring in her backpack which was beside some of her moving boxes. Yawning she reached out, doing so carefully so she didn’t fall out of her chair, and pulled the backpack towards her chair. She unzipped the small pocket on the side and fiddled through some pencils and books until she found her flip phone. It was playing the polyphonic version of ‘Invoke’ by TM Revolution. Leaning back into the chair, she flipped it open, “Yo.”

~

“Hi, how‘re you Ichigo?” She recognized the voice of the caller, Isumi Hikaru. A friend from Hokkaido. A shy and far too polite girl that Ichigo had kind of befriended at her old school. They had hit it off while working on some math project together in their first year of middle school.

~

She wouldn’t exactly call them friends from her personal point of view. She would never be that close with a human, her inner emotions were a lot different then how she acted with people. The whole thing with friends was that they were just someone you were compatible with, it didn’t mean anything special at all.

~

“I’m good, I guess…”

~

“How’s the city so far?” Hikaru seemed genuinely interested, she had never been to the city before.

~

“Polluted and full of idiots.”

~

Hikaru groaned trying to hide her giggle, “Oh, Ichigo…you don’t really mean that do you?”

~

“Nnn…perhaps I do and perhaps I don’t. You know me Hikaru.”

~

“Maybe too well?”

~

“Yeah, so…” Ichigo drummed her fingers on the side of the chair drearily, “how’s Hokkaido?”

~

“You’ve only been gone two days,” Hikaru noted, “nothing’s changed much.”

~

“That exciting, huh?” Ichigo never had liked were they used to live, part of her pitied Hikaru for never have gone anywhere. All her friend knew was their small home town and around the three hundred people that lived there. Since it was such a small town most of the kids had to commute to school on the bus which was tedious for everyday life. If you missed the bus chances are you wouldn’t be getting to school that day since all the adults were busy working on farms on in the nearby city.

~

“Oh, you know. Same old, same old.” She sounded bored by that prospect as well, “I wish I could visit the city, maybe I’ll visit you over break or something with Kana…” (Kana was another friend of Ichigo’s) Hikaru paused her a moment before saying, “So, Meio Academy, right? Sounds like you’ll have fun there.”

~

“Doubt it,” Ichigo said bluntly, scratching the back of her neck.

~

“Anyway,” Hikaru said cheerfully, “good luck! I heard the top scorer on the national exams goes there. You’re going to have some competition, ne?”

~

“Competition?”

~

Hikaru seemed surprised that Ichigo was unaware of this, “You know, Minamino Shuichi. He goes to Meio Private Academy as well.”

~

Ichigo shrugged, “I guess…”

~

“I have to go,” Hikaru said. “Call me soon, okay? I want a full report on how things are there, alright?”

~

“Sure, bye.” Ichigo hung up and placed her cell phone on the window sill. She sunk lower into her chair, her eyes still transfixed on watching the rain outside the window. Rain…it wasn’t as great as she thought. She couldn’t believe she made Hiru promise such a stupid thing.

~

She put her hands behind her head. Tomorrow was going to be her first day at school, not that she was looking forward to it.

~

The rain continued to hit against the window. She heard thunder roar overhead and saw a flash of lightning off in the distance.

~

“Dumb rain…” she grumbled. “I’m the one who feels like crying…”

VOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOVOV

Ten shi: Sorry if I made Hokkaido sound boring, one of my pen pale lives somewhere over there and she says that nothing really happens there. So…tell me what you think! A review or two would be nice and encouraging! ^-^
