It had been almost two hundred years since that fateful night. Esmé traveled with Aura, Orchid and Isis. They taught her survival skills, taught her different styles of fighting and showed her what they did for fun. Sometimes they'd mingle with high class demons and steal their wealth or they'd go to a bar and talk about things. Then one day, Aura announced that they were going to live in the human world, Esmé began to have second thoughts. “What do you mean you don't want to go? A change in surrounding would do you some good Esmé.” Aura said crossing her arms. “Yeah!” Isis added. “I've heard the human side is more exciting. Let's go have a look see at what there is to do.”

 

“Yeah, come on Esmé, it won't kill us.”

 

Esmé somewhat curious about the human world but she was reluctant to leave. She would make frequent trips to the castle she had been banished from. She wondered how Yurime and Eiji were, if Kurama had stayed behind to rule with Conya. ::: He's a good king. He'll make sure everyone is all right. So will Yurime and Eiji. :::

 

“All right, let's go to the human world.”

 

So the next day Esmé, Aura, Isis and Orchid went to the Ningenkai. They decided to live in Tokyo. There, they shopped in the city, enjoyed the nightlife and wonders the city had to offer. Sometimes Esmé would get home sick but she learned to enjoy the Ningenkai. Soon, she had forgotten all about her past life. It was time for a fresh new start. The first thing Esmé changed was her appearance. Her long green hair was replaced by short red locks that feel just over her shoulders and her eyes had become her hair color, beautiful green. She looked her reflection in the mirror, she was a different person, and she was human. No longer did she worry about the youkos or her father's death. She was sure everyone had moved on without her. “This is what's best for me. This is the path I choose to walk, and the life I choose to live. I'm Esmé Denoir now. I'm human, this is me...”

 

Esmé's green eyes shot open, Isis was banging on the bathroom door. “What are you doing in there? Come out already!!”

 

Esmé stepped out of the bathroom and apologized to Isis. The icy blue haired girl went into the bathroom and locked the door behind her. It was fun living with Aura and her comrades. Sometimes she felt like an outsider, when they shared jokes about the past, she'd sit and listen. Isis and Orchid would tell her about their past adventures, things they discovered and enchantments Esmé wouldn't believe. ::: Isis and Orchid are so nice. I wonder where they were born and why they left home. I wonder what Aura's like on the inside. She never says anything about her past or her family. I wonder what happened to her. :::

 

“Esmé.”

 

“Huh? What?”

 

“Don't `what' me. Orchid and I are going out tonight, do you want to come with us?”

 

“It depends. Where are we going?”

 

“To a club. Orchid's been dying to go out and she wants us to come. Pick out something nice ok?”

 

Esmé wordlessly agreed to go with Orchid and Aura. She took the keys from Aura's purse and left the house. In the driveway was Aura's car. It was a beautiful silver Porsche. During the first month they had moved to the Ningenkai, Aura suggested that she, Orchid and Esmé get their licenses. Esmé had become a qualified driver in past two years she had lived in the Ningenkai. Perhaps she had truly forsaken her past life as the fox princess Esmé. Now she was driving down the street, into the busy city that was Tokyo. She'd pick out a beautiful outfit for that night and enjoy herself at a nightclub. As Esmé searched for a new dress, she couldn't help but feel she was being watched. Even when she left stores she felt a pair of vicious eyes watching her. ::: Could it be...no! It can't be. Princess Esmé is dead. I'm Esmé Denoir now. I am human. There's no way they would think I'm still alive after all those years. But I can't be to sure. I'll track down them down before they could get to me. :::

 

Esmé ran out of the department store and into the crowds. She couldn't tell exactly where the demonic aura was coming from but she knew a demon was among the horde of humans. She ran quickly, her heart was racing, a sign of uneasiness. What if it was a demon Conya sent to kill her? She couldn't just fight it in the mall. Aura had made it clearly to never use demonic techniques in the eyes of humans. What would she do then? She was getting closer, just around the corner and she'd find her demon. But as she turned the corner, she bumped into a boy. “Ahh!”

 

“Oh, are you all right? Please, let me help you.” He offered kindly. The boy helped Esmé to her feet as he apologized. Esmé looked up at the boy. It was somewhat a reflection of herself. But it was a he. He had long red hair like hers and emerald green eyes. “Hi.”

 

“Hello, are you all right?”

 

Esmé nodded a yes. “Sorry, I was in a rush to get back home. I need to hurry up and get home. Good bye.”

 

Esmé ran off before anymore could be said. She had lost the demon's youki. The red haired boy watched as Esmé ran away. “Something about that girl that's very...”

 

“Kurama! Hey hurry up we're leaving.”

 

“Ah, coming Botan.”

 

At home, Esmé came home with the news of a possible demon being in the Ningenkai. “I felt it but lost its youki. What if they know that I haven't died? Maybe they sent a demon to track me down. What if-”

 

“That's not possible Esmé. When we allowed you to go back to see your home, Orchid lent you her invisible crystal. All you had to do was lower your youki so that no one could sense you. Did you go inside the castle? Are you sure that your youki was low enough so that it could not be felt?” Aura questioned. Esmé said yes but she wondered if someone had felt her presence. She hadn't been sure and Aura didn't want to take any chances. Isis would go out and patrol the city for any signs of demons and report back to Aura with her results while She, Orchid and Esmé went out. “Don't worry about it Aura. I got everything covered. You guys just go out and have fun.”

 

“Ok, be careful Isis. If you find anything come find us.”

 

“Haha, I'll do that. Cya soon!”

 

Isis picked up her broom and flew into the skies. Esmé watched her as she flew faster until she became a small beckon in the night. “Will she be ok?” She asked. Orchid patted her shoulder to relieve her of worries. “Isis is a strong kid and has been with us for hundred of years. Don't worry about her.”

 

Esmé nodded but still, she couldn't help but worry just a little for Isis. When they arrived at the nightclub, the music blew away Esmé's worries. She followed Orchid and Aura to a table. There, Orchid announced that she was going to dance and Aura was going to get a drink. Esmé was alone. She scared to dance by herself but she didn't want to sit alone. She decided to go get a drink and join Aura. As she was walking towards the bar she saw Aura sitting on someone's lap. She decided that interrupting Aura would only embarrass her and upset Aura. As she turned around she bumped into someone. “I'm sorry!”

 

“It's all right.”

 

Esmé was surprised to see the same redhead she had bumped into earlier. “It's you from earlier. I'm sorry about it. I was in such a rush I should have apologized formally.”

 

“It's not your fault. I saw you and I thought we could talk. Do you want to get a drink?”

 

Esmé's heart skipped a beat and she said yes. He ordered drinks for the both of them. “What's your name?”

 

“Esmé Denoir. What's yours?”

 

“Shuiichi Minamino. I've never seen you around before. Did you just move here?”

 

Esmé sipped her corona and looked over at Orchid. She had people crowding her as she and her dance partner were grinding. Shuiichi looked over at Orchid then smiled. It was Yusuke that was dancing with her. “Friend of yours?”

 

“Cousin.”

 

“I see. That's my friend Yusuke dancing with her. So Esmé where did you live before you came here?”

 

“Kyoto. I really miss it there. I... I lost my mother when I was a child and my father passed two years ago. After hop scotching all over Japan, we decided Tokyo would be best. I miss my home so much. I...”

 

Esmé felt a lump in her throat. She was on the verge of tears. Her home in the Makai felt so far away. She was sure that Yurime and the others had forgotten about her. Conya would be a far better ruler then she would ever be. ::: At least she won't bring pain and suffering like I did. The other youkos will be just fine without me. :::

 

“Esmé, you don't seem so happy. Would you like to dance so you could get it off your mind? The music has slowed down.”

 

Kurama extended his hand with a gentle smile. It assured Esmé that she would be comfortable with him. She accepted his hand and walked with him to the dance floor. He held her as they danced to the slow music. Their bodies moved in rhythm with each other, their hands joined together and their eyes locked. Esmé took her hand away from Kurama's then slipped her arms around his neck. “Is this all right with you?” Esmé asked, hoping Kurama wouldn't object to it but he didn't. In return, he wrapped his arms around Esmé's waist and brought her closer. “No, I don't mind being close to you at all.” He whispered. Esmé relaxed her head on his shoulder while he held her. Aura watched as Esmé danced with Kurama, a smile crossing her lips. “This is probably the happiest she's ever been. I don't think I've ever seen her smile from the heart.” She said. Orchid sat up on the bar and nudged Aura. “Yeah, I'm happy for her. I'm sure she'll feel right at home here in the Ningenkai. That's if Isis doesn't detect any demons around.”

 

Unfortunately for them, Orchid was wrong. Isis was finishing off the demon she had been in combat with. “Your time is up you bastard! Enjoy the everlasting flames of hell.” She said before she made her final strike. The demon spit blood and grinned at Isis. “It doesn't matter. Once Conya finds what she's looking for she will rule all.”

 

“Silence!”

 

Isis cut the demon's throat with her icy knife. “I've got to warn Aura. Conya knows Esmé is still alive.” Quickly, Isis flew into the sky on her broom. Back in the Makai, Conya was infuriated that her assassin had failed. “FOOL!!! I sent him to bring back Kurama's head and he gets his throat cut! The Buffoon! Haku! Who killed him? You better have a good answer for me boy.” Conya threatened. The small child shook with fear. Fearfully, he answered his sister. “It was a girl with blue hair. She used the power of ice. I...I...”

 

“Damn you! I should send you to perish with that bitch Esmé!”

 

“Enough Conya!”

 

Conya turned around to see the face of another demon. He had long black hair and piercing red eyes. “Brother, I'm sorry this is taking so long. I...”

 

“Enough excuses Conya. You need to hurry and find Yurime, her brother and Kurama. My patience is wearing thin. It took you too long to complete your mission. If you don't quicken your pace, I'll have your head instead.” He threatened. Conya gritted her teeth and turned to Haku. He was still shivering with fear. “What are you crying about ugly? As long as big bro's here I'm not gonna touch you. Why in hell can't I find Yurime? If I knew she could unlock the secrets of the ancient kings I wouldn't have let her escape. Damn her!” Conya swore. He brother pulled her by the hair and whispered in her ear. “If you hadn't been so stupid as a child, we'd have the secrets already. You're lucky I accepted your apology. Hurry and find the bitch and her friends! I grow tired of your failures.” He said. He pushed Conya's head into the table, causing her to hit her nose. Conya wiped the blood from her nose and growled at her older brother. ::: Grrr, if I ever get the secrets of the ancient kings, you'll be the first to find out brother dear :::

 

Back in the Ningenkai, Kurama offered to drive Esmé home. “Are you sure your friends won't mind?”

 

“No. They were having too much fun to observe my activity. I just went because they think I'm too much of a bookworm and that I should have some fun. I'm glad I went out though. I wouldn't have had the chance to see you again.”

 

Esmé slipped her hand into Kurama's and smiled. “So you wanted to see me again?”

 

“Of course. There isn't a reason why I wouldn't want to see a beautiful face. Esmé, if I may ask, what are you doing tomorrow?”

 

Esmé stopped walking. He wanted to be with the next day. Esmé's heart increased in pace but she was able to control it. Taking a breather, she answered his question. “Nothing, but if you would like, I'd go with you to lunch.” Esmé offered. Kurama smiled tenderly and Esmé blushed. It would be her first human date and she was excited. They had arranged that Kurama would pick her up at two thirty. That gave Esmé time to take Aura to work and be back in time to get ready. “I'll see you tomorrow then. Good night Shuiichi.”

 

“Sleep well Esmé. I look forward to tomorrow.”

 

Kurama took Esmé's hand and gave it a gentle kiss. Esmé sighed with a blush as she watched as Kurama walked towards his own home. But after a few steps he turned back to take one last glimpse at her. He was so handsome. Like a prince from the moon that had come to sweep her from the Earth and take her to his kingdom. Once he was away from eye's reach, Esmé turned and went inside but was surprised by her friends. “We need to talk. Now.”

 

Esmé sat on the couch and waited for Aura to begin. She didn't begin immediately though. She had taken a cigarette, lit one and smoked it. “You know, those are bad for your health.” Esmé warned. “I can read the damn label Esmé. We're not here to discuss my health. It's more like yours. Isis found a demon snooping around in the Ningenkai for you. He said that Conya was looking for something and our only bet is you. It seems that letting you go back to see your home was a mistake that will cost you dearly. I thought I could trust you Esmé.” Aura said coldly. “I swear I was careful when I went back. I didn't stay long enough for-”

 

“Esmé! Excuses won't do you any good. They know you're alive now and they'll come after you. Now that they know you're here many human lives will be at stake. Who knows, they could take many people hostage.” Isis said. Aura blew smoke and put her cigarette out. “Don't be so frantic Isis.” She said coolly. “But Aura!”

 

“Silence. They won't do that. There primary target is Esmé right? There shouldn't be a reason for them to attack the humans. I strongly believe that I can safely say is that our best bet is to stay where we are. They're nothing but humans here. If a demon comes along he'll stick out like a sore thumb. We'll be all right here.” Orchid assured. None of them argued with Orchid's plan of action. They all agreed and went to bed. All slept except Esmé, who was lingered on her windowsill and gazed at the city. Somehow, she could swear that Kurama's eyes were on her, even from a distance. “I was able to find comfort here but I never imagined I'd find love. The Ningenkai is a world of surprises.”
