Kurama cursed at himself. That’s twice he had lost Esmé. After making a mental promise to never lose her he had failed not only himself but his master and family. “Kurama! Where’s Esmé? What happened?” Yurime asked. Kurama answered without looking in her face. Yurime gasped into her hand. Did Conya take her? If so, they had to find her and fast. “What the hell are you standing around for? Esmé’s been captured and we have to find her. Orchid, Isis, Yusuke and Kuwabaka will take the mountains and the rest of us will divide up the city and search.”
“My name’s Kuwabara.”
“Whatever.”
Everyone divided into two even teams to search for Esmé, who was inside a church with Conya’s younger brother in her arms. She held him closely as he cried in her arms. “Esmé...I’m sorry. I have to tell you, warn you. You and your family, you’re in danger. Kurama too. Esmé please, save them, save us.” Haku pleaded. Esmé pulled Haku away from her so that she could see his face. “Tell me all about it Haku. What happened after I left?” Esmé asked. Haku walked away from Esmé as he retold his side of the story to the past.
“Well, after you left I knew that Yurime and Eiji would be in danger. I thought that Kurama would stay behind to try to overthrow Conya but he left with Eiji and Yurime. I was able to catch up with them. I helped them escape to the human world then returned home. I didn’t want Conya to know I was helping you guys. I figured if they went there they’d be able to find you, plus stay out of Conya’s reach. Kurama traveled back and forth to find you but he was unsuccessful. I’ve been keeping tabs on Kurama, Yurime and Eiji every now and then. I’m so glad you’re safe princess. You don’t know how lost we truly are without you. Please come back.” Haku begged. Esmé stepped away and looked down at the floor and closed her eyes. “I’m sure you guys can handle it without me. Even if I were to come back, what can I do? You and every youko was their when Conya defeated me. I’m worthless. I’m no good to anyone. This is what’s best for you and everyone else.” Esmé said. Haku shook his head and flung himself at Esmé. “You have to come back Esmé! We need you! You don’t understand what Conya’s trying to do. She-”
“That’s enough Haku. I don’t want to hear anymore. Just go home.”
Haku’s eyes filled with tears as he watched Esmé turn away. There was one thing left to say, the one thing Esmé didn’t know about Conya. He swallowed hard then screamed out to her. “Fine! Leave us! You’re a coward for abandoning your own kind! Your mother would never do that! Our queen Celia died for us, for you! If Conya hadn’t killed her she’d slap your face right where you stand!”
Esmé stopped dead in her tracks. It felt as if someone had driven a knife through her heart. She slowly turned towards Haku with no expression. She was caught between anger and disbelief. Anger because Haku identified her as a coward and disbelief because there was no way Conya could have slain her mother. “You...you not only come here to piss me off but you dare lie about my mother. Conya told me how she died. It’s my fault she’s dead!”
“Not it’s not! Do you think Conya would ever tell you the truth? She killed Celia. I saw it with my own eyes. I was there in the corner. Too cowardly to help, too cowardly to do anything. I witness Conya slaughter your mother. Celia was an angel to me. This time I won’t lose another one like her. I love you Esmé. I love you with all my heart. That’s why I won’t let go until you’ve come home with us.”
Esmé stared at Haku. Who was she to believe now? Had Conya told another lie? Even if she had, what was Esmé to do? She was weak. She couldn’t do anything to defeat Conya. “Haku...if what you say is true, then let’s go look for Yurime and the others. They can help me.”
Elsewhere in the Makai, Conya paced back and forth through her throne room. She clenched her fists and unleashed her youki in anger. “IT’S RIDICULOUS! Why the hell can’t they find three youko vermin and the little runt?! They can’t just vanish from the face of the Makai and Ningenkai. It doesn’t add up, it’s ludicrous, it’s giving me a fucking migraine.” Conya raged. As Conya sulked in her chair, her brother appeared from the shadows. “While you’re complaining, a very valuable pawn is in play.” He said. Conya snorted at him. “Quit with the enigmas.”
“Haven’t you wondered where are dear little brother is?”
Conya gasped and jumped from her seat. “Haku? Why the hell should I care? It’s not like he...” Conya’s train of words came to an abrupt stop. Was it possible? It could have been. She turned to her brother and glared at him. “I’m going to the Ningenkai myself. Don’t worry I won’t harm you’re little runt of a brother.”
In the Mountains, Isis, Orchid, Yusuke and Kuwabara had met up by the train station. “Nothing! We’ve got no leads.” Yusuke notified.
“Then we’ll meet us with Aura and the others in the city. I hope you two aren’t afraid of heights.”
“Orchid wait! Do you feel that? It’s a portal.”
Orchid stopped for a minute and felt the immense power surge through her. “Yeah, and it’s the queen bitch herself. Come on, we gotta get to the city.”
In the church, Haku had felt the portal opening as well. He took Esmé’s hand quickly. “It’s her! She’s coming for you! Please Esmé, you have to get out of here.” Haku said.
“I won’t leave you.”
“You don’t have a choice.”
Haku became fretful. Conya was just outside and was coming closer. He turned to Esmé clawed her across the face, knocker her through the wall. It quickly collapsed and covered the dent Esmé had caused. Esmé wouldn’t be badly wounded but she’d be safe. As long as Conya hadn’t known she was there. ::: Wait! If Conya doesn’t know I’m here! Then it might work. Come on Invisible Crystal...I need your aid :::
Esmé’s body disappeared and her youki could barely be sensed. She passed through the rubble and ran to Haku, who was face to face with Conya.
“Conya.” He murmured. She walked right up to her little brother with a devious grin on her face. “You’ve been deceiving me haven’t you? You’ve been assisting them haven’t you? Yurime, Eiji and Kurama.”
“Yeah! I did! And I would have assisted Celia and Shinosuke if hadn’t been so weak. Now I’m ready to stand up to you. To you, and to our brother. I should have told Celia and Shinosuke what they had permitted into their clan but I was scared of being forsaken by them. They were like real family to me. You took them from me and now you want to take the rest of their family. I won’t let you!”
Esmé watched as Haku admitted his betrayal. He was valiant for defying Conya yet foolish. He was no where near as powerful as Conya. If he were to fight her, she’d obliterate him in less than a minute. Conya took a step closer and backhanded Haku across the face. She smiled victoriously and walked closer. She assumed Haku was going to attack her when he held his hand up but nothing happened. She didn’t know it, but Haku was holding back the invisible Esmé. ::: Let me go!!! Let me go!!! ::: She pleaded mentally but Haku did not. Conya drew a strand of hair from her head and changed it into a sword. She held it at Haku. “The price you pay for betraying us...you meant so much to your older brother but he wouldn’t stand for a traitor and neither will I. This is why I won’t let you live!!!”
Conya drove the steel blade into Haku’s chest and out of his back with Esmé watching in horror. When Conya drew back the blade, she ran to the dying boy’s aid. With tears in her eyes, she called out to him, begging him to stay alive. He looked up at Esmé and whispered. “You...you were so much like her...Celia. Esmé...you’ve got to return, you’ve got to defeat her...she’s...you don’t know what she is. She’s...she’s a wolf. I was too afraid to say anything because I thought your family would...but I never got the chance. She killed your mother and...”
“Talking to a dead princess. Here, let me send you to join her. Then you can tell her you life’s story.” Conya said. She thrusted her sword into Haku’s chest once more. Esmé turned to Conya, she was not only smiling to Haku, but to Esmé, although she did not see her. She turned and opened a portal. Before she left, she slashed Haku’s throat. “On second thoughts, don’t bore the dead with your tiresome tales. Farewell brother dear. Don’t worry, big bro will join you soon enough.” She sneered as she left. Once she was gone, Esmé ripped off the crystal and feel beside him and cried. “Haku...Haku!!!!!” She screamed. She reached for his small body and cradled him in her arms. As she did, everyone entered the scene. They saw the melancholy youko holding the small boy. “Oh god! Esmé!”
“And that’s Haku she’s holding.”
Yurime ran to Esmé and knelt beside her. “She did it...Conya...She killed him. Yurime...” She sobbed. Yurime hugged Esmé and massaged her back, trying to sooth the pain from her heart. Esmé broke away from Yurime and stood up. “You see, I’m the reason he’s dead. I watched as Conya killed him. I couldn’t do anything before or now. This is why I can’t go back. Please, just leave me alone! Just get away from me!” She screamed. She fled from the church in the rain and did not stop until she reached home. When she got home, she crawled in through her window and cried herself to sleep, dreaming nightmares of the death of her dearly departed friend with a brave heart and braver soul.
