The New Mission

Kurama sat up slowly, looking around his room for a sign of disturbance, that perhaps someone was there, but he found none.

The window was open from when he let Hiei in. He got up and closed it, hearing a little 'click' as he did so.

He remembered what Hiei was here about, a new mission and this one was urgent.

A demon, one they haven't encountered before, was in the area and it had not come invited like many demons are supposed to. That meant that the demon could be a threat.

Usually something like this would not be very strange as it happened very frequently, but this demon was different. It was a high class demon, not yet know what type or the exact class of demon it was. Odd, very odd indeed.

It was no wonder Koenma was all upset about this rare disturbance. The Spirit Detectives would have their work cut out for them this time. The rosy haired young man could imagine all the complaints the baby Prince would be getting from Yusuke once the teen had heard about the new case.

Kurama yawned tiredly and stripped off his shirt and grabbed a towel, going to the bathroom. It would be a long day.
--------

I sigh in frustration. Of course Koenma would find me. I was foolish to hope he wouldn't. Now my attempts to court Kurama will be called to a halt should they find me and my forest eyed beauty recognizes me.

My mother always had a saying for a person like me. 'Someone you'll meet only once, but will never forget.'

She said it was my voice. My strange voice that I could only use to bring dreams. I curse this voice and the day my coming of age brought it to power.

I am doomed never to speak. See stranger, now you know my secret of scent. My breath, the breath in my voice, is what holds my scent of lavender.

If ever I used it around persons who are awake, they would be sent to a deadly sleep from which they never woke. However, youkais are the only known beings that can wake from my spell.

What a blasted power to have. I will never be able to woo my lovely rose haired Kurama now. Not when Koenma wants my voice.

It seems my human guise will be needed more to keep the humans from sleeping and trailing back to me.
------

As Kurama says 'good-bye' to his family he steps outside and almost trips. He nearly curses a moment and then gets his balance back, looking down at the object which made him take a spill.

His breath catches in his throat. It's the beautiful bouquet that he had seen the other day! He picks it up gently and cautiously, so as not to let it come to harm and takes it back inside.

His mother coos over it and smiles. "Oh, Shuichi dear, there's a note here for you." she says, plucking the note from the lovely red rose in the center and handing it to her son.

He blinks at it and then sees a shimmering ink that has his name delicately scrawled on it. Kurama opens it and his face pinkens as he reads the note.

"Dear Love,

I saw you looking so longingly at this lovely masterpiece
and it broke my heart when you looked so sad because you
couldn't bring it home with you. So I took the liberty
of buying it for you. Here is your gift. Keep it well."

Kurama's mother looked from her son to the little piece of paper and summoned up her knowledge of them.

"Ah," Shiori murmured. "Is it from an admirer perhaps?"

The rosy haired boy turned to her and pushed the note behind him in one of his pockets. "I don't know!" he blurted, very much unlike himself. "It doesn't really say anything."

An arrogant voice snickers in his head. 'You liar!' the silvery fox that he once was told his human counterpart. 'That's a love note and you know it.' The fox snickered once more. 'Little Shuichi, getting a love note...'

The green eyed beauty blushed deeply from embarrassment and grabbed his school bag. "Sorry mother, I have to go!" he called over his shoulder as he bolted out the door, heading for his school.
------------

I smile softly as I see you dash to school, your embarrassed blush still staining your cheeks so cutely.

Such an adorable face, I wonder if you'll ever make it again. I would much love to see it.

I sigh and once again ponder my situation. Would you call my name in your sleep, or will you pretend it never happened? Oh, even worse, will Koenma reveal me before we have established our relationship?

So many things can go wrong, all for the one purpose of loving you, my rose.

You finally reach school, I see your fiery friend waiting for you in a tree. Did you learn yet that he watches you like a hawk? I'm beginning to think his feelings for you are more than just as a friend.

No! I will have none of that. He is your friend and that alone. I am your lover, or soon to be. If that little fire youkai interferes I will make him slumber until his death shall part him from the physical world.

The day drags on, as slow as it dares and I find that even I grow weary of the waiting. Perhaps there is another way to be close to you.... My human guise!

Yes, that is it. In my human guise I cannot be recognized as a demon, and my dangerous voice is cloaked to be safe. It is perfect.

I can become one of the 'high school students' and befriend you, eventually to become... ah what do they call it... oh, I will just be your lover.

I believe I can have it ready by tomorrow. Mind manipulating is very easy after all. And to think, love, when I was a child such things exhausted me to the ground!

I'm sorry my rose colored beauty, but I must go. I have things to do if I must become one of those students in your school.
