Kurama suddenly interrupted Koenma's speech to the spirit detective.

"Hiei!" Yusuke looked at him oddly. Koenma, slightly annoyed, went on regardless.

"Yes, Hiei. That fire demon disappeared yesterday, and the escort we assigned to take him to spirit jail was found murdered, with wounds from what looks like a katana." He sighed. "We think he may have pulled off an escape, don't you agree, Kurama?"

But the redheaded fox was very out of it; his eyes had a far-away look to them, as though he were almost . . . . . . daydreaming . . . . . . but . . . . Kurama never daydreamed . . .

"Kurama! Hello-o!!! Hey fox-boy, wake up!" Yusuke said, waving a hand in front of the kitsune's preoccupied emerald gaze.

(What's Kurama doing? You'll find out now!! ^-^)

Watching, amused, as Koenma filled Yusuke in on the Jaganashi's disappearance, Kurama suddenly heard a voice in his head.

/ Oi, Kurama! Fox, you hear me, don't you? / Reacting aloud, he called out the youkai's name in surprise.

"Hiei!" Ignoring the strange looks he was getting from Yusuke and Koenma, Kurama heard the response in his head.

/ Hn. Baka kitsune. / Quickly the youko sent him a message.

~Hiei, where are you? I can't sense your ki anywhere in Reikai.~

/ Hn. I'm not IN Reikai. /

~Then . . . where? . . . Ningenkai? . . . or Makai?~ The fox heard his friend scoff.

/ No time for stupid questions, baka. I can't hold this connection for long. /

~Very well, then . . . where ARE you?~

/ Hn. Don't know. Try tracing my ki; I'm at the edge of some portal. /

~Why don't you just go through?~

/ Baka kitsune. There's a shield-spell. Now just do it. / Kurama chuckled slightly at the annoyed tone, but searched for Hiei's ki, using the mental link as a lifeline.

~Found you. We'll be there in a matter of hours.~

/ Hn. Good . . . AH! / He heard Hiei cry out in pain.

~Hiei! What happened?!~ His friend's mental voice was weaker, fainter, now . . .

/ Can't hold it . . . fox . . . . . . / Then it just faded away into nothing.

~Hiei! . . . . . . ~ Then the fox noticed the hand waving in front of his face.

"Hello-o! Is anybody in there?" Kurama smiled slightly, eyes flickering to Yusuke, which caused the detective to pull his hand away, and then turned to the toddler-sized ruler of Reikai.

"I've found him. Hiei's in Chuokai."

(a.n/ ok, well `chuokai' is my own personal word and means the `middle world' (which is basically our world), Reikai's the spirit world, Makai's the demon world and Ningenkai's the human world . . . but then, you probably already knew what the last three were ^-^)

"Hiei! What happened to him?!?!? What HAPPENED, for that matter?!?!?" Your racing thoughts are interrupted by a familiar sound of disdain.

"Hn. I'm right here." Your gaze snaps over to him, blue eyes meeting with red. You relax, then wonder about what happened in the forest. You swallow, looking down . . . you're slightly nervous, but before you can ask, he speaks.

"Hn. I suppose you want an explanation, ningen." Your gaze goes back to him, sitting cross-legged on the chair, and you nod a little. He sighs, looking down for a moment, then meets your gaze with his own.

"Fine. This may be hard for you to grasp, but . . . those things we fought weren't human." Ah . . . you thought so . . . as you nod. "In fact, they're not from THIS world at all." Now you're puzzled . . . you find it easy enough to believe those two creatures came from another world . . . but . . . how would HE know that . . . then you remember the black fire he shot at the humanish demon (a.n./ no, humanish is not even a word but I'm getting tired of calling him `the shorter demon' all the time *dodges objects thrown at her and sweatdrops* ok, I'll get on with the fic). You slide away from him on the bed, your back against the wall, a little afraid. Your eyes dart toward the door to your right. Then he sighs, bringing your frightened gaze back to his, but those cold crimson eyes are now an inch from your own, and you gasp at the speed at which he moved to kneel in front of you.

"Hn." Those red eyes survey you with a look of disapproval. "You said yourself I wouldn't kill you, ningen. Besides-" He blurs away in an instant to sit cross-legged on the chair again. "It would be a waste of time." There is silence for a long time before you crawl back to the edge of your bed. His eyes are closed, supposedly sleeping.

"H-hiei?" You whisper.

"Hn." One of those red orbs cracks open. "What."

"Well . . . before I fainted . . . I felt something welling up from within me . . . do you have any idea what it was?" You ask softly. Hiei is silent. After a few moments spent without a response, you get up and walk over to stand at his side shyly.

"Hiei?" He looks up at you sideways and scoffs.

"Hn. We'll find out soon enough, ningen. For now, just shut up and wait." Biting back a sarcastic retort (after all, this guy saved your life) you climb back on the bed and take out your sketchbook, flipping through the old works. It's filled with all of your little doodles . . . from mock-anime to some creations of your own . . . glancing up at the red-eyed person sitting silently on a chair in your room, you are suddenly inspired. Hesitant and unsure at first, you start to sketch him. The minutes tick by as you carefully scratch out his stiff stance, sitting on the chair. After a while the beginnings of the drawing are taking shape. Now you begin to fill in the outlines of his face. The little ears, the cute button nose . . . each detail you sketch meticulously into place. Then you come to his eyes. He's just sitting there in your room, his eyes closed, resting. You wouldn't dare to try to convey the conflicting emotions in his gaze . . . there's no way you could possibly sketch them correctly without seeing them . . . you sigh, your eyes growing distant as you think . . . you don't want to leave the picture unfinished . . . but you'd hate to bother him for such a silly reason . . .

"Why are you watching me, ningen." Your gaze comes back, and you blush at the antagonistic ruby eyes. While lost in your own thoughts, you had been absently staring at him. He's awake, now, anyway . . . so . . . it's now or never . . .

"Um . . . Hiei?" You venture to say after a while.

"Hn. What."

"Uh . . . well . . . I was wondering . . ."

"Hn. Just say it, baka."

"Could you . . . stay still for a few moments?" `Hn'ing at you, he closes his eyes again. "WITH your eyes open?" You quickly add. He looks at you, one eyebrow raising. You blush, looking down at your unfinished drawing. A tense silence follows.

"Hn. Fine." He says suddenly. You look up at the nearness of his voice, and find that his face is exactly a foot from yours, the intense red gaze directed unwaveringly at you. He sets down the chair and sits right next to your bed.

"A-Arigato . . . " You mumble out. He `hn's, not taking his eyes from yours.

"Just hurry up, ningen." You nod quickly, and begin to finish your sketch. You can feel his eyes upon you . . . not that it's an . . . . unpleasant . . . feeling . . . but it's very . . . unnerving . . . whenever you glance up, finding his ruby stare unchanged . . . just as cold and direct as ever . . . a warm feeling bubbles up from your lower stomach, tingling throughout your entire body. Slightly distracted at the sensation, you draw a line in the wrong place. Sighing at the temporary delay, you set out to find your eraser (you've long-since destroyed the one on the pencil you're using). Momentarily forgetting about Hiei's gaze upon you, you search the immediate area around you for any sign of said eraser.

"Hn. Looking for this?" His voice brings your gaze up to his, and then you see it . . . the eraser . . . he's holding it up in his right hand. You nod, reaching out for it with your left hand.

"Hai . . . arigato." You answer in Japanese again. He smirks slightly, just a small upturn of the corner of his mouth and a minute softening of his ruby glare as he pulls it out of your reach. Your face grows puzzled as you lean forward in order to reach it.

"Hey-" You say, slightly annoyed at his antics. "Would you just give it to me?" The ruby eyes glint as he pulls the object farther away, causing you to lean toward him more. "Hi-ei-" You say, your tone carrying a note of impatience, your eyes intent on the eraser in his hand.

Suddenly you feel something touch your cheek. Your startled blue gaze focuses back on him. Because of his teasing, your face is just inches from his, over his right shoulder. There is no hint of hostility on his normally hardened features. In fact . . . his eyes seem much more open, now . . . and it seems as though . . . he's almost . . . SMILING at you?!?

The hand at your cheek suddenly hooks around your chin, pulling your face to his as he softly presses his lips against yours. It's a sweet, simple kiss, and soon he pulls back, leaving you breathless. Your icy-blue eyes take in his fiery ones, and the ruby glare softens even more. The two of you just sit there, his hand still under your chin, and you still leaning toward him . . . then you are aware of a few voices calling from outside.

"Hiei! Where are you?"

"Oi, Three Eyes! Get out here!" His hand loosens, and you go back to sitting, cross-legged, on the bed. He doesn't meet your gaze as he stands up.

"Hn. They're here." He turns back to you after putting his katana back on his belt and sighs as he sees that you're still sitting, motionless, on the bed. Then Hiei takes your wrist roughly, and leads you to the window, pulling your arms around his shoulders. After opening the window bereft of a screen, he turns a newly hardened ruby eye on you.

"Hold on." He jumps out the window, your hands clasped tightly together under his chin (while still grasping your sketchbook, pencil, eraser and all).

Yusuke found his way out of the forest, grumbling.

"Stupid thorns." The black-haired boy cursed, picking the sharp pieces of plants off his green school uniform.

"You should be more cautious, Yusuke." Kurama remarked as he gracefully avoided a low-hanging branch on the outskirts of the woods. He straightened while he walking behind the reikai tantei, and the green eyes were filled with amusement. "We can't have you be injured before we even find Hiei, now can we?"

"Heh. You're right. I might need to fight him again." The teen cracked his knuckles. "That should be fun. Though I can't help but wonder how he was able to escape . . . didn't he have some wards or something like that on him, Kurama?" The fox's eyes became thoughtful and serious.

"A good point, Yusuke . . . somehow . . . I don't think Hiei killed the reikai escort . . . despite the fact that the weapon used was obviously a katana."

"So you think someone else did it?"

"Yes . . . I'm almost certain." They neared the edge of the field, and both sensed Hiei's ki nearby. Walking toward the largest building (a.n./ which is, incidentally, the barn *sweatdrop* so sad I know, but it's the truth ^-^;;;), searching for the fire demon.

"Hiei! Where are you?" Kurama called.

"Oi, Three Eyes! Get out here!" Yusuke shouted.

"Hn. You two sure are loud." Both turned at the voice behind them. They recognized him instantly, but confusion knotted their brows as the girl behind him straightened, stepping to his side. Their hands brushed slightly, and a blush could be seen on the girl's face, and she quickly looked down, and the fire demon, though meeting Yusuke's gaze, seemed a little different that usual . . . Yusuke was the first to comment, running over and slapping the half-koorime on the back.

`Hey, Hiei! Found yourself a girl, have you? You little-" Boom. The detective was on the ground, having been both slapped and punched in the face. Hiei's gaze lingered for a moment on the unconscious form of Yusuke.

"Baka. She's NOT my girl………." Kurama sweatdropped as the cold crimson eyes fell on him. "So you found me, after all, fox."

"Yes, well . . . it wasn't TOO difficult after we got through the portal." He eyed the brunette before continuing . . . she was very pretty, he thought, and not someone that could be trampled on in a fight, he sensed . . . "We should head back through, soon, though . . . Botan

won't be able to keep the shield-spell at bay for long, you know."

"Yeah, Hiei." Said Yusuke, recovering and standing up. "So say good-bye to your girlfriend and-" Boom. He was eating dirt again.

"Hn. Baka." Hiei grunted, satisfied. "Fine, Kurama." The ruby gaze fell back on the kitsune, and he turned around, Kurama taking hold of the spirit detective's shirt and pulling him along into the forest where the clearing was (a.n./ getting many more thorns stuck to Yusuke's green uniform in the process, I might add ^-^)

The silvery portal was still swirling as Kurama neared it, hauling the unconscious Yusuke.

"Hiei." The fox said so Maki wouldn't hear, a sad but firm tone in his voice. "She can't come with us, you know."

"I know that, fox."

"It would break all the rules governing-"

"I KNOW, fox." Kurama simply nodded, and was about to walk through the portal, when he made a last comment to the girl, who had introduced herself earlier.

"Maki." She looked up from her spot a few yards away in the clearing.

"Yes?"

"Don't give up. You'll find someone, someday . . . in your own world." Then, with a last glance at Hiei, he went through the portal and was gone.

_Y_O_U_R_-_P_O_V_-_A_G_A_I_N_

You stand there, confused. What had Kurama meant? Hiei would be coming back, wouldn't he? You'd see him again . . . wouldn't you?

"Hiei . . .?" You ask softly, your voice nearly a whisper, what with your throat constricting. He didn't look at you, and you stepped closer.

"Hiei . . . you'll be coming back . . . won't you?" Still no response.

"Hiei?" You say, touching his arm gently.

"YOU D-N NINGEN! JUST GO AWAY!" Shocked at the explosion of words (plus the profanity) you retreat backwards, feeling as though he has just slapped you. He refuses to look at you, and heads toward the gate, looking for all intents and purposes like he is leaving for good. No . . . you think . . . you don't want him to leave . . . for some reason . . . you can't stand the thought of never seeing him again . . .

"Hiei!" You call out, hoping to deter him. But your effort was in vain. A burning sensation rises from your chest area as he keeps walking toward the portal . . . he won't get away THAT easily . . . you think . . . daring to kiss you, then treating you like dirt . . . he won't get away with it! Suddenly, there is a flare of sky blue fire surrounding you. Your normally dark brown hair is tinged with red. And Hiei . . . well, Hiei has stopped. Part of the reason may be that there is a wall of blue fire between him and the portal . . . (a.n./ ^-^ heeheehee . . .).

He slowly turns to face you, and instead of a look of utter annoyance, he is smirking. What the h-l is he smirking about, you think. In an instant he's right in front of you, and eyes your dark brown hair that is now streaked with red.

"Well, girl . . . it seems you aren't as normal as you first appear." He comments, crimson eyes dominating over your blue ones. "You have an abnormal amount of spirit energy for a ningen." He scoffs. "Someone like you shouldn't even EXIST in Chuokai . . . it breaks all the `rules' Reikai instates." It dawns on you what he has just implied, and you smile slowly, your hair fading back to its original color and the blue flames sparking from you dissolving into thin air.

"I suppose not . . . you'd better get me out of here, then. I'm too much of a danger." He nods once, then takes your wrist in a firm grip as he heads toward the portal.

"Hn. We'll have to take you all the way to Koenma to get this straightened out." You enter the silvery circle, happy that you'll be staying with him a little longer, at least . . .

_t_i_m_e_-_p_a_s_s_e_s_-_a_n_d_-_s_o_._._._

After you came through the portal, Koenma was furious. Kurama just smiled, and Yusuke kept blabbering about how Hiei managed to sneak his girl through the gate . . . until he was knocked unconscious, that is . . . So: you've been taken to Genkai's temple. She's agreed to teach you how to use your spirit fire. But, unfortunately, after the first few lessons on control, Yusuke came tumbling along for a new round of training. Commenting on the `slacker', and that you were a MUCH better student than Yusuke will ever be, Genkai has decided to have you work with Hiei or Kurama. You've learned to control your energy now (well . . . mostly . . .) so you should train against someone strong. Everyone agrees, though, that it would be WAY too much for you (heck, for anyone!) to practice against both of them at the same time. Either one can easily train alone, but you're stuck in a sticky situation.

On the one hand, you want to train with Hiei, who you would like to spend more time with, and know that he won't hurt you too much, considering how you think he sort of likes you . . . he also uses fire (like you do) so may be able to give you a few tips for battle . . . but . . .

If you train with Kurama, you'll get a fair training session out of the deal, he won't hold back, but won't kill you, either. In addition, he's used to training with a fiery partner and has a very vast array of knowledge stored away for little tricks you could use in battle . . .

If you choose to train with the fox, go to `7. Kitsune'

If you want to train with Hiei, go to '9. Koorime'
