"Well . . . what's the deal with his . . ." You try to think of a word for it, without being too impolite . . .

"Eye?" He supports helpfully. You look up at him, smile slightly, then nod. He sighs.

"It's called a Jagan." You cock your head at him.

"A Jagan?"

"Yes; it's a third eye for the spirit." You think for a moment.

"Wait . . . how come it's purple? Aren't his eyes red?" Kurama nods.

"You're very perceptive. To tell the truth, his Jagan is an implant."

"So . . . it's not natural?"

"Correct . . . and it is a very painful process, to implant a Jagan."

"Then . . . why'd he do it?" Now Kurama looks uncomfortable, but covers it up by looking closely at you. Then you realize your skin in tinged with sweat . . . your headache's gotten worse.

"I believe we've talked too much . . . you need your rest." You nod, and he gets up, standing at the door, when you call out to him.

"Why'd he do it, Kurama?" He gives you a sad smile and shakes his head, then leaves, closing the door behind him. You sigh, dipping the washcloth in the basin of water he left by the bed, then you wring it out . . . finally lying back down and placing it over your forehead, while staring up at the ceiling.

Hiei . . .

I started, sitting in the tree just outside of Kurama's window, then glanced at the girl lying on the bed. She was thinking of me. Baka ningen girl. After asking all those questions about my eye, you'd think she'd get that I was tuned in to other people's thoughts . . . especially when they concerned me . . . I `hn'ed silently to myself, then flitted through the open window.

You sense another presence in the room. Not wanting to tempt fate (a.n./ all those outside distractions cause your head to throb even more -_-;; poor you . . .) you keep your eyes closed, even as you know they're stepping nearer to the bed, though you can't hear their footsteps . . .

"What do you want, Hiei." You can tell he's surprised at you knowing he's there . . . then hear the chair creak slightly as he sits.

"Hn. I was just in the area. Where's Kurama." You sigh . . . you'd half-wished that he'd come to see YOU . . .

"Downstairs, I think . . . "

"Hn. You THINK. You don't know?" He asks bitingly. Angered at his tone, you finally open your eyes, sit up and look at him, the washcloth falling onto the bed.

"Yes, I THINK! He didn't exactly tell me where he was going, baka!" Your head's starting to throb again, and perhaps not just from the anger . . . he smirks at you, but you can see he's angered at being called a fool.

"Then you should have ASKED, girl." You fold your arms over your chest, trying to ignore the fact that he's slipping in and out of clarity . . . your vision's clouding . . . the headache's gotten MUCH worse, by now . . .

You don't want Kurama to hear this . . . this . . . argument.

"Would you just shut up!~ You yell, not noticing that you can't hear your own voice for the last part of the sentence. Hiei reels like he's been hit, his eyes go wide, and he gets off the chair, backing up a little . . .

"What did you just say, ningen?!?"

~I SAID, shut UP!! Can't you HEAR?!?~ He shakes his head slightly, the shock still showing on his face. An instant later he recovers, and then . . . you hear his cold voice . . . in your head.

~I heard you, but you didn't say a word, girl.~ You start to get angry.

~How could you have heard me if I didn't say a word!?! That's IMPOSSIBLE, baka!!!!~ His crimson eyes narrow, and he's on the bed in an instant, kneeling in front of you, taking your chin roughly in his firm grip.

~If you truly want to know what's happening, talk to me . . . right NOW.~ With that `said' (a.n./ well . . . mentally spoken, actually . . . ^-^;;;;) he cuts off your air with his lips. You're so surprised . . . the situation's gone from you both yelling and screaming to . . . this. You're blank for a moment, then you hear his voice in your head, while he's still covering your mouth.

~Well, ningen? Speak.~ Your anger rises again.

~I CAN'T speak!! You're blocking my-~ You stop short, realizing that you've just . . . spoken . . . without SAYING a word. You hear him give a muffled `hn' before pulling away from you, his hand still under your chin. You look at him, your eyes wide and scared . . . and . . . he embraces you. Very gently and loosely, he's holding you . . . like he hasn't EVER . . . done it before . . .

~ . . . you . . . you'll be fine . . .~ you've never heard such a soft tone (well, coming from HIM) before . . . tears start to well up in your eyes . . . from the pain, the confusion, the fear, and the overwhelming rush of emotions you have for this rough little . . . demon . . .

"Hiei . . ." You whisper, glad when you hear your own voice, and not a soundless mental one . . . "What's happening to me??" He holds you a little tighter, and your own arms slowly come up to encircle him in response.

"You'll be fine." He repeats. "I won't let anything happen to you." Finally feeling safe, you start to drift off again, loosening your grip and resting your head on his shoulder. He notices this, and gets off the bed, gently laying your head down on the pillow. You look up at him, but he doesn't meet your gaze . . . just covers you with the blanket. He turns to leave, when you reach out and grasp the smooth material of his cloak. He looks down at you, the red eyes completely open to your gaze.

"Don't . . . leave . . ." You ask, though still drifting off . . . your eyes close, and you hear him sit, setting your arm gently on the bed at your side. You feel something brush some hair off your forehead, but all is silent as you drift off . . . with images of a certain black-clad demon haunting your dreams . . .

Kurama walked into the room, finding a strange scene. The girl was asleep on the bed, that was no surprise, but Hiei was there as well . . . just sitting there, watching her rest . . . the fire demon sensed him after a moment, and turned to look at his friend, crimson eyes just as cold and emotionless as always. The fox sighed.

"Hello, Hiei. Have you come to tell me why you attacked her?" Hiei looked back at the girl, and Kurama swore he saw something almost akin to . . . fondness . . . flicker in his gaze.

"Hn. She's a telepath, Kurama." The kitsune was shocked. Never . . . in all his years as a youko . . . NEVER . . . had he heard of-

"A NINGEN telepath?!? Are you certain, Hiei?" The youkai nodded, red eyes still thoughtfully surveying the girl's face as she slept.

"Yes, fox. A ningen telepath."
