""Ghost speaking which no one can hear""
If you don't want a tour of the house, read the first five sentences and then skip down to the next paragraph. Thank you.
Kurama watched as snowflakes cascaded down from the sky, gently falling on whatever's there to catch them. The redhead sighed. He'd been gazing at the snowflakes for about an hour now. He had been sitting at the window sill in his bedroom. It had been about 3 months ago that he and Hiei had bought this house. It was a nice little house, right on 1st street. Now, for the tour of the house. When you're walking up the street, you see a brown two story house on your left, and a small park on your right, I mean a really small park. When you go toward the house, the driveway is about a car and a half long. It's gravel, and there's a 1995 Ford Tempo sitting in the drive, it was sky blue in color. The car was Kurama's pride and joy. By now you see the front door, it was white with an oval glass in the center. There's no porch, just an overhead roof thing. There was two rose bushes on either side of the door, the one on the left was pink, and the one on the right was red. Another object of Kurama's joy and pride. When you open the front door, you would be in the living room. It had medium brown colored shaggy carpeting. There was a beige couch sitting against the wall almost directly oppisite the door, a little to the left though. In the corner to the left of the door sat a TV. There was a coffee table sitting directly in front of the couch. There's a door right across from the front door, it led to the bathroom. It was small, you walk in, to your immediant left if the white toilet, in front of the toilet is the sink, and against the wall to the left of everything was the tub. It was light brown in color. Now when you turn around and leave the bathroom, turn to your immediant left and you'll see the kitchen. It's just connected to the living room. The kitchen has all matching light green appliances. The stove is in the far right corner. The tile is light brown. The refrigerator was left of the sink, which was between it and the stove on the counter. To the left of the frige, there was a door to the back porch, but it was converted into the laundry room. In the middle of the kitchen sat a large wooden table, the top was finished to a shine. There were matching dining chairs, four of them sitting around the table. There was a vase of roses sitting in the middle of the table. Now, back in the living room, to the right of the front door, was a stairway, it was built recently. It was wooden and had a carpet in the center leading down. Once upstairs, you're immediantly in a bedroom, the guest bedroom, so it was quite bare. Just the basics, a bed, a closet, a set of drawers, a lamp on the bedside table along with an alarm clock. Now turn left and you'll see a little hallway, they never got around to building a door there so it just starts in the bedroom. Anyway, this hallway wasn't very long, it just reached to the other side, a window on the left. There's a door at the end on the right. This door looked a little worn, it had been used a lot. Open the door and you'll find a bedroom. This was Kurama and Hiei's room. Standing in the doorway, you see a bed against the wall on you're left, in the center of the room. There was a small table next to the bed, it had a blue lamp and a matching blue clock. The clock read 10:00AM. The bed had a pretty blue comforter on it with two big fluffy pillows with matching pillowcases. The large closet was on the very far corner to the right. When opened, there's dark clothes on the right, and various other clothes on the left. There was a dresser back on the other side of the bed. There was various items on it. A large desk sat to the right of the closet. There was a computer sitting there, along with pictures; pictures of a woman probably in her 40's, with long black hair, always smiling. She was joined by a redheaded teen in some of the pictures. Other's consisted of this redhead with a short, darkheaded young man with a white starburst in his hair right above his eyes. Contrast to the redhead's constant grins, the darkheaded one seemed to always have a scowl. But his eyes showed merry and mirth. Sitting at the large window oppisite the door, was where we found our redheaded kitsune, watching the snow fall. Now that you know what the house is like, it's time to procede.
*sigh. 'It's almost Christmas, two days away. I can't seem to think of what to get Hiei...' Kurama had been pondering this problem for the past week. He'd already picked out gifts for everyone else, he got Yuusuke and Keiko a fruitcake and he got each of them something. For their 4 year old son, Duo (GW alert!), he got him a large hairbrush furnished to look like a rose for his insanely long chestnut colored hair that's always in a braid. For Kuwabara and Yukina, he got them a fruitcake and also individual gifts. He was giving them a gift certificate for baby things at the mall. They were expecting a child in a few months. Hiei wasn't happy about it, it took two weeks for Kurama to pursuade him not to kill Kuwabara. For his mother, he purchased a nice china tea set. It was light blue in color so he was sure his mother would adore it. He bought Genkai a new set of garden equipment, she was always tending to her garden and had said something about needing new tools. But for the life of him, he couldn't think of anything to get for his koibito. He'd thought about a new sword, but Hiei's was still in top condition. A new sheath was out of the question, Hiei had his wellkept. Speaking of his little firefly, he should be back from Mukuro's today sometime. He'd been gone for about a week now, he said he was coming after the week was up. This brightened Kurama a little. Now all he should think about was how to show Hiei how much he meant to him. With this thought, Kurama got up from the window seat. He walked to the door, and closed it after him. He glanced at the large portrait hanging in the hall. It was one of him, Hiei, Kuwabara and Yuusuke, after a mission, Keiko had persuaded them to pose for a group shot. They decided to have it hang in Hiei's and his house. It really brought some color in the hallway. Continuing across the guest room, he stopped to fluff one of the pillows. Turning, he started down the stairs, toward the living room. Stopping at the bottom, he adjusted the heater controls so it would be nice and toasty for when his koi returned. Passing the bathroom, he arrived in the kitchen and looked at the turkey thawing in the sink. It was ready to be put in the oven. he wanted this to be a special lunch. Digging in the cabinets below the sink, he pulled out the turkey pan. He set it on the counter for later. He went to the refrigerator, and pulled out the potato salad and deviled eggs he had made last night. He'd put a lot of work into this luncheon. He knew how much his koi loved his cooking. He'd honed his skills so he'd earn Hiei's approval. It worked. Hiei sure packed a lot of food away, but he never gained a pound. Kurama grinned, he knew of his koi's gigantic sweet tooth, so he came prepared. He had made a fudge cake with Hiei's favorite ice-cream, cookies n' cream, on the side. He'd made the cake from scratch, the way his lover liked it. He was sure Hiei would be pleased. For the drinks, he wanted nothing alchoholic, so he had bought apple cider. He opened more cabinets, finding the potatoes for mashed potatoes. He set to work peeling them and getting them ready.
After about two hours, making it 12:00PM, he had everything done, the turkey was still cooking, and the potatoes were now mashed and with a side bowl of gravey. He went about setting the table, making two places. He was sure to freshen up the roses in the center, and definatly sure to leave a beautiful red rose on Hiei's plate. He felt quite pleased with himself. He was also quite pleased with the wonderful smell of food wafting through the house. He was sure Hiei would smell it and come rushing home. That was the plan anyway.
"Now I just need to freshen myself up." Speaking aloud to the empty house, Kurama made his way into the bathroom. Stripping down til he was nude, Kurama turned the shower on, not noticing the spirit that entered the peaceful house. The spirit was very sad, for they just left the physical world, now unable to do anything but exist as a ghost. The ghost wandered through the walls until it came upon the bathroom. Arriving, the spirit felt a deep sadness as soon as it laid eyes on the redhead in the shower. The spirit wiped a vapored tear from it's eye before turning to the fogged up mirror over the sink. Using it's fingers, the spirit concentrated energy into writing a message. Then, the spirit perched itself on the counter, waiting. It didn't take long before Kurama was out of the shower. Toweling his hair, he peaked at his reflection in the mirror. Gasping, Kurama read the words written on the fog.
"I love you, fox." Is what was scribbled on the mirror. The ghost watched as Kurama's eyes softened.
"When did you get home, Hiei?" Kurama smiled and wrapped his robe around himself. Running into the living room, Kurama shouted.
"Hiei!? Where are you? I've missed you!" Hearing no reply, he walked into the kitchen, thinking food would be where Hiei was. Finding the food untouched and no Hiei, Kurama was puzzled. The ghost followed Kurama out of the kitchen and toward the stairs. Kurama ran upstairs and searched the guest room. No Hiei. Grinning, he took off to their bedroom. Swinging the door open, he ran in.
"Hiei I missed....you...?" No one was there. Kurama placed a finger to his chin.
"I'm certain Hiei wrote that on the mirror.......HIEI! Fine! We'll play this game of yours!" He shouted good naturedly, listening to it echo throughout the empty house. Grinning, he made his way to the closet, picking out a nice outfit of silver. The ghost settled on the bed, watching the kitsune undress. The ghost felt the pangs of sadness once more, knowing nobody would ever answer the fox's plea.
""Kurama....."" Was the soft murmur from the spirit. Kurama didn't hear, as he was unable to. He cheerfully finished dressing. He ran to the door, checking the guest room again. Still finding nothing, he ran downstairs. Checking each room carefully, he didn't leave a place unsearched. Getting frustrated, Kurama opened the front door. Running into the snow covered yard, he searched through all the trees. All the while, the spirit floated beside him, watching him waste his time. Kurama felt tears forming at the corners of his eyes.
"What...? I thought......Maybe he was telling me....goodbye...? But WHY?! Did he decide to stay with Mukuro?!" Feeling the tears falling, Kurama hastily brushed them away.
"No! Never, he promised to never leave me unless he died. He wouldn't leave me for the bionic bitch." Resolved, Kurama trudged back to the house, muttering revenge against a koorime who wasn't home yet.
Transparent tears fell from the spirit's red eyes. It knew they would come soon. It knew they would come and just break Kurama's heart.....
Inside the kitchen, Kurama seated himself in his seat, across from Hiei's. Staring at the empty chair, Kurama thought of different scenarios which could be keeping Hiei from being home.
'Maybe that little note was just letting me know he'd be back after he took care of something. Maybe?' Kurama shook his head.
'No, maybe he's just playing around?' No, the first one sounds more plausible. Sighing, Kurama sat there, waiting. The spirit looked on mournfully before parking itself in Hiei's chair. Watching, the spirit seen Kurama watch the clock, heat up the food, watch the clock, and then heat up the food again. It was a sad cycle. At 8:00PM, Kurama gave up.
"Hiei you are in so much trouble when you get home....." He muttered, much to the spirit's surprise. The ghost cried out when the doorbell rang, it knew who it was....
Kurama glanced at the door. Fixing his hair, he stroad to the door and opened it. To his surprise, he saw Yuusuke, Keiko, Kuwabara, Botan, and Yukina standing out in the snow. They all looked crestfallen. Concerned, Kurama ushered them inside. He looked on at the puffy red eyes, the sniffling noses, and the mournfull looks on their faces.
"Guys? What's....wrong?" He was almost afraid to ask. He looked around the living room. He noticed a few items off the shelf.
"Oh, sorry about the mess, I was making dinner, waiting for Hiei to come home. I'm worried about him though..." At the mention of Hiei's name, Yukina started bawling and clung to Kuwabara's chest. Kurama's eyes widened.
"I'm so sorry Yukina! I didn't mean to make you cry! Was it something I said?" Kurama wrung his hands together. Kuwabara looked at Kurama and sighed. Yuusuke stepped forward.
"Guys, go back to the car...I'll handle this...." The other's nodded and went back out the door. Confusion was written all over the kitsune's face. The spirit watched on without being able to be seen. Yuusuke approached the fox, placing a hand on his shoulder. He reached into his pocket, retrieving an item. He placed it in Kurama's hand. The kitsune looked at the necklace in his grasp and gasped.
"This...this is Hiei's teargem! Why do you have it Yuusuke?" He narrowed his eyes dangerously. Yuusuke took a step back.
"Hiei was on a mission for Mukuro, he apparentally ran into some strong enemies. He.........Hiei was killed Kurama...I'm sorry." Yuusuke sighed raggedly when he finished. Kurama continued to stare, as if not comprehending. Finally, it hit him.
"W-what?! H-how...?" He whispered, feeling the hot tears trickling out of the corners of his eyes. Yuusuke ran a hand through his hair.
"Like I said, the scene we found him in had at least 3 S-class demons, but there was another stronger presence. We never found out what it was, but we found Hiei's body. He took a deep wound through his chest. It looked like his death was quick, so he probably didn't feel much." Kurama didn't feel the teeny bit better. He covered his mouth with a hand, trying to hold back the sobs wracking his body. Yuusuke reached a hand out but Kurama flinched away.
"P-please, I'd like to be alone." He knew he was being harsh, but he didn't care at the time. Yuusuke took a step back.
"Alright Kurama, but, is there anything I can do to help?" He tentively asked. Kurama fixed a glare on him.
"No! There's nothing you can do to help! You can't bring Hiei back can you?! If not, then there's nothing......nothing.." He sunk to the floor at the end of his sentence. He banged a fist on the ground.
"...Why..?" He did that a few more times before hearing Yuusuke leaving through the front door. He didn't care. The ghost, now known as Hiei, floated down and sat next to the sobbing kitsune. Hiei reached a hand out and tried to touch a shoulder. It passed right through. Kurama continued to cry, cradling his head in his hands. Hiei felt helpless.
""Kurama, be....strong.."" He knew Kurama couldn't hear him, but it made him feel better knowing the kitsune wasn't alone. The fox sniffled a few more times. He sat up and wiped his eyes.
"Hiei.....you're....gone..? Forever? But...there was so much I wanted to show you Hiei.....you left not knowing how much I cared. I've said 'I love you', but that was an understatement. It's so much more....than that. Why did you have to..?" He felt more tears forming. He couldn't stop the onslaught of sobs vibrating his body. He wrapped his arms around himself. Then he remembered something. Shaking, he stood and made his way to the bathroom. He looked at the mirror, the writing was still there.
"Then...who? What? But how, I'm sure Hiei wrote this, but the way Yuusuke talked, you've been dead since at least this morning." Puzzled, Kurama decided to leave the writing there. He was sure Hiei wrote that. But, how come Botan didn't have his spirit? What was going on? Feeling exhausted all of a sudden, Kurama walked into the kitchen. He looked at the meal he so carefully prepared for his love. He felt angry at it. Snarling, the fox grabbed the glass bowel of mashed potatoes and flung it across the living room. Hearing a satisfying crash, Kurama started hurling dishes and food across the house. Hiei flinched everytime one hit. He had no idea Kurama would take it THIS hard. Selfish as it was, he felt a little better knowing how much Kurama really loved him. Hiei continued to sit on the counter, watching the display of anger. Kurama didn't notice the front door had opened until strong arms wrapped around his shoulders. Screaming, Kurama kicked and swung his arms. Kuwabara didn't relent. Yuusuke directed Kuwabara to the couch. Dropping the kitsune on the sofa, Kuwabara backed up. The whole gang came running in when they heard the dishes flying. Kurama lay motionless on the couch. Yukina looked near tears once more. Botan spoke up.
"He's shutting down..." She muttered. Yuusuke's ears perked up.
"What do you mean Botan?" He ran a hand through his hair, tired. Botan looked at the motionless Kurama.
"Yuusuke, you know how much Hiei meant to Kurama. It's like he's lost a half of his being.....if he doesn't get over it soon, he....will die." She turned her head away from the stunned silence. Hiei's eyes widened. He never knew that. If he'd known that, he would have been way more careful on his missions. Yuusuke shook his head.
"And, why don't you have Hiei's spirit Botan?" The others nodded in agreement. Botan shook her head.
"I couldn't find his spirit anywhere. This means he's either gone to Hell, or, he had unfinished business in this world. Maybe he didn't want to leave the physical world. I don't know." Botan rubbed her eyes. Keiko looked thoughtful.
"Maybe he's watching over Kurama, maybe he didn't want to leave him. You know as well as I do, that Hiei loved Kurama more than anything." The others nodded. Kuwabara spoke up.
"Yeah, I'd say he's in the room right now. But, Botan, is there anyway to find his ghost?" He rubbed the back of his head. Even though he never got along, he liked the little shrimp. Botan shook her head.
"No, the only way to find his ghost is if he comes willingly. If not, he could stay in this world forever." She didn't really want to tell them this, she knew it would be hard to take, especially for Kurama. The fox in question moaned. All eyes went on him. Kurama rubbed his head.
"So what you're saying is, he could be anywhere and we couldn't see him." He chuckled. Botan was glad Kurama took this news so well.
"Yes Kurama, he could very well be in this room, if he decides to let us know he's here, he will." He put her hands up in a shrug.
"Well, Kurama, I need to go back to Koenma's office. I'm really sorry about this." She pulled out her oar and was gone. Keiko took Yuusuke's hand.
"We'll be over at the Ramen Shoppe, if you ever want a free meal, feel free to come by." She wiped a tear from her eye and led Yuusuke to the door. The teen looked back.
"And Kurama, if you need to talk or anything, I'll listen." He nodded. Kurama barely smiled.
"Thanks Yuusuke." Yuusuke smiled a bit.
"Anytime, my friend." With a wave, he and Keiko was out the door. Yukina wiped more tears from her eyes. She had just found out that morning that Hiei was her lost brother. Genkai had told her. She felt that she would break.
"Kurama, I'm sorry, I know how much he meant to you." She grabbed Kuwabara's arm. The orange haired teen looked down at his feet.
"I'm sorry K'rama, if you need anything, just call okay?" He started toward the door. Kurama waved. He didn't feel like talking to anybody. Now alone, Kurama placed an arm over his eyes. He still couldn't believe his Hiei was...gone. He felt tears coming again. He groaned aloud.
"I need to be strong....Hiei would have wanted that...." He sighed and felt the tears quietly trickling down his cheek, through the crook in his arm. Sighing again, he uncovered his eyes and sat up. He surveyed the living room, noting all the dishes and food scattered everywhere.
"Did I make this mess..?" Remembering, Kurama groaned aloud. Scooting to the end of the couch, Kurama set a foot on the floor. He felt so alone now. Knowing that Hiei was gone, he felt he was the only being in the universe. The fox made his way to the kitchen, noted what was left of his dishes. Rolling his eyes in self disgust, he pulled the broom and dustpan out of the closet. Hiei floated next to him, watching. That was all he could do. He didn't know what Botan was talking about. Showing them I'm here? He didn't even know how to do that. He admitted it was hard getting the writing on the mirror but still. He's tried touching and talking to his beloved. It never worked. He perched himself on the table, watching Kurama go around, cleaning up the mess he made. Hiei thought back on how he died.
He'd been coming back from accomplishing his mission for Mukuro. He was supposed to take out a certain enemy of hers. The demon hadn't been as hard as he thought, so he was finished quickly. After reporting to her, he was told that his time was up. He could go home to the Ningenkai. Overjoyed but not showing it, Hiei had made his way out of the kingdom. He had been in deep thought about what to get his lover for this...Krismus thing coming up. All he knew was that he was supposed to get a gift for the one's he cared about on this day. So, thinking about this, he never noticed the ambush until it was too late. They were henchmen of the demon he'd killed earlier that day. They were easily S class demons, but they seemed to have some sort of spell cast on them, making them stronger. Hiei fought with all he had, but he didn't seem to be doing them much harm. Tired out, he was taken by surprise when a fist ran through his back and out his chest. He remembered thinking about Kurama during this time before blacking out. When he came to, he sat up and saw the demons looking hungrily at him. He jumped up and back away, noticing they weren't even looking at him. Looking down, he saw his motionless body still laying on the ground. It wasn't long after that, Yuusuke and Kuwabara showed up. The demons fled the area, their mission complete. He seen the two checking out his body, confirming that he, Hiei, was in fact, dead. Feeling the need to get away, he fled to the Ningenkai, and into his own home, where his lover was in the shower.
Finished reminicing, Hiei sighed and continued watching Kurama, who was putting the broom away and taking out paper towels for the food. It didn't take long to clean it up, but there were some stains on the carpet now. Peeved, Kurama threw the towels and food away. Exhausted, Kurama turned the lights off and headed upstairs. In the hallway, he stopped to glance at the picture on the wall. The group shot, they looked tired but happy. Hiei had looked peeved because Yuusuke had stuck an elbow on his head for a prop. Smiling gently, Kurama headed on into their....his...bedroom. Walking slowly, Kurama looked around the bedroom. Hiei's clothes were still scattered on the floor, his spare headband was draped over the desk chair. Nostalgic, the fox picked it up and cradled it. Eyes glistening, he fingered the pictures on the desk. There were ones of him and his mother, ones of him and Hiei. There were many pictures of Hiei and himself. Hiei was sitting on the bed, feeling helpless and pissed. He wished he didn't die. Who was gonna watch out for his fox? Who was gonna take care of him? Fuming alone in the world, Hiei sat and watched Kurama pick up his scattered clothing, putting them in the laundry shoot. Puzzled, Hiei didn't know why Kurama would do that, it's not like he's coming back....
Kurama finished picking up after his dead lover. Even still, he couldn't bring himself to rid the house of his things. Tired, Kurama stripped out of his clothes, much to Hiei's delight, and rummaged through his drawers. He pulled out a pair of Hiei's boxers, and Hiei's oversized work shirt. Hiei's eyes widened. Why would he wear my things? Kurama, dressed, went to the closet and pulled out Hiei's dragon blanket off the shelf. Stripping the bed, he set it up in Hiei's favorite sheets and his blanket. Snuggled in, Kurama poofed up Hiei's pillow and stuck in his back, pushing up against it, as if Hiei were behind him. Taking the blanket, he rolled an end and pulled it around his waist as if an arm was there instead. Still not satisfied, he did his nightly phrase.
"I love you Hiei, forever and ever, wherever the wind takes us, no matter how high the mountain, no matter how deep the ocean, no matter how long the river. That's a promise." His voice cracked on the last sentence. Hiei couldn't keep eye contact with the beautiful creature on the bed. He couldn't sit there and look at how miserable his nonexistence was causing his fox. Kurama wiped a tear away and tried to snuggle into sleep.
About an hour later, Kurama had finally cried himself to sleep. Hiei watched, sitting on the foot of the bed. He decided to finish the phrase.
""Stupid fox, I won't love you forever and ever, I'll love you even in the after life and beyond. Now go to sleep you crazy kitsune."" Sniffing, Hiei perched himself on the windowsill, looking out. He failed to notice the smile on the redhead's face, or the emerald eyes open and tearing up.
