Chapter Three

Two days had passed and the temple was finally returning to what Genkai would consider normal although she wouldn't assume that it would remain that way for long. It was only a matter of time before the others came to visit, especially considering the fact that Kurama had remained upon learning of what had happened between the siblings. Most likely his absence would be noticed shortly and the search for the man would lead Yusuke and Kuwabara right to him. Then again it was possible for Kuwabara to show up anyway without the excuse of hunting for the fox, the man was prone to stop by from time to time. To do so now would complicate matters meaning added stress Yukina certainly didn't need.

Yet Genkai knew that sooner or later the others would have to know. Despite what Hiei might wish, keeping the pregnancy a secret for long would be next to impossible. Nor would Yukina even attempt to hide it, she was determined that if the others cared about her that they would accept what had happened and not look down on her because of it. Personally Genkai wasn't so sure if her expectations were realistic, if nothing else Kuwabara was going to be hurt by what had happened and there was no telling how he would react. It would be best if there was someone level headed nearby when he was informed and her first choice under the circumstances would have been Kurama. Unfortunately while Kuwabara respected the kitsune, Yusuke was far more likely to keep the man under control. It meant someone was going to have to speak with him, preferably away from the temple where all hell could break loose.

As Genkai stood up and proceeded to walk out the door Kurama sighed, gaining the attention of his two silent friends. He'd been wondering when she was going to take a hand in things, while the old psychic hadn't been happy she hadn't passed judgment either. It was a definite point in her favor as far as he was concerned, Hiei was on edge enough as it was and there was no telling just what would set him off. "So it begins," he said quietly. He could only hope that she'd go to Yusuke first, if anyone could make him see reason it was her.

"What do you think they'll say?" Yukina didn't bother looking up from her tea but she could feel the weight of both of their stares upon her. It'd been a difficult decision for her to come to as far as telling the two men that weren't present. In the end it was the fact that as soon as the babies were born the secret would be out that she'd decided to say anything at all. She'd seen in the file that one was a boy, a dead give away that she'd lain with a male. If he took after his father as she suspected would happen they would know instantly who she had bonded with. Genkai had been right, it was a problem best solved now before the children were born.

"Does it really matter?" Hiei's mind had already been made up that if either of them so much as looked at Yukina wrong for this he wouldn't stop until he'd removed their eyes and shoved them down their throats. His mate had no control over what had happened and he'd be damned if they scorned her for it. That same threat extended to the others to, Botan, Keiko and anyone else who took it into their head that Yukina was the responsible party. Kurama knew this and understood, the kitsune would not stand in his way when it came to protecting his mate from their derision.

"I suppose not," Yukina looked up and caught Hiei's gaze. While it would be nice if the others accepted the way things had turned out it wasn't absolutely necessary either. If it truly mattered what they thought it would have had an impact on her decision to keep the twins but it hadn't. In the end the only opinions that meant a damn were hers and that of the man sitting across from her.

"Even if they don't accept it right away there is always the chance that they will come around," Kurama tried to reason away the woman's obvious fears. Despite it all she was hoping that she wouldn't lose their friendship, something he devoutly hoped for as well, "Babies have a tendency of softening the hardest of hearts, I'm sure this time would be no different." In fact he was pretty much sure of it as far as Kuwabara went, even if they weren't conceived in a manner he approved of they were still a part of Yukina and there was no denying he loved the girl. Likely that affection would spill over to the children as well given enough time.

Yukina didn't need to hear the sharp retort that Hiei was holding back, she could feel the restrained emotions surging through the bond. With each passing moment she became more and more certain that he would make a good father, already his protective instincts were coming into focus and there was no mistaking just who they were directed to. If nothing else that made her feel that much closer to the apparition even if he had withdrawn into himself a bit more than he had been before. She didn't blame him, not really. He had enough to work out on his own that she couldn't push him to be more open just yet. Smiling slightly she turned to Kurama, "I'm sure you're right and I'm worrying for nothing."

"Just remember you have us here to help you," Kurama said as he patted her shoulder gently before standing from his chair. Between him and Hiei they would make sure that she had a decent support system through it all. Genkai would be a large help as well but he couldn't help but wonder if Yukina needed someone a bit more motherly to take her under her wing. Carefully he looked from her to Hiei, gaging just what their reactions would be if he suggested a bit of an outing. "Yukina, would you like to get out of the temple for a while?"

"Just what do you have in mind Kurama?" Hiei stared at him skeptically, wondering just what was going on in his head. Truthfully he wasn't sure that Yukina should even leave the temple in her condition. It was only a couple of days ago she'd been ill with the backlash of the bond trying to form. What would happen if she were to attempt leaving him now? Or worse yet, ran into one of the others before Genkai got to them?

"Nothing that would be harmful Hiei," Kurama said quietly, trying to placate his friend. The worry for his sister was plain to see even to him but he couldn't keep the girl locked up forever either. "A day out in the sun would actually be good for her I'm certain. It's been a while since Mother has had company and I'm sure that she'd be happy to have a visitor for a while." At this he leaned towards Yukina and gave her a wink, "She's also a good source of information on pregnancy and childbirth, I'm quite sure she'd be happy to answer any questions you might have."

"That would be lovely Kurama but," Yukina trailed off uncertainly for a moment. She was well aware that Shiori knew nothing of his alternate life, nor that demons even existed. Honestly she didn't even know how human and demon pregnancies compared, would there even be a point to speaking with the woman about it? "I am a demon Kurama, as is Hiei. Could she even be of a help to us?" She wasn't trying to be mean but she needed to understand if this was yet another person that she could turn to for advice.

"You have a valid concern Yukina but it is nothing to worry about. Human pregnancy is much the same, only a few months longer. If we were to tell her you were two months pregnant it would not be a cause for her to question the truth. She might not know about demons but she is still knowledgeable when it comes to maternal instinct," Kurama could see that Yukina was hesitant but at the same time wanted to go. Speaking with someone who had been through the process before was likely to be a great comfort, something that none of them could really offer her. "You have nothing to worry about if you wish to go, I will be there beside you as will Hiei I am sure." A slight nod of the hybrid's head told him that there was no way Hiei was letting the girl out of his sight regardless of if he was with her or not.

"Alright Kurama, if you are sure she won't mind," Yukina smiled softly at the man, touched that he was going out of his way to make her feel better. It was a bit surprising that Hiei agreed to go, she knew how much he despised associating with most humans. It said a lot that he was willing to put that aside just for her.

"Let me call her and see if she has any plans for the day," as he spoke Kurama pulled out his cell phone. There was a very good chance that she would be free for the day since Shuuichi was in school and Hatanaka was at work. All that normally required her attention was tending to the house, something that could be allowed to slide for the day.

Hiei settled back in his chair and resigned himself to a long, trying day but if it made Yukina happy it was worth it. In fact she waited at the table just long enough to hear Shiori had picked up and had no plans for the day before she rushed out of the room, no doubt to get ready for her outing. He of course had no desire to impress the woman, he'd met her before and she gave him the space he demanded. So long as she continued to respect the unspoken agreement they'd come to there would be no problems.

"I was wondering if you might enjoy getting out for the day Mother, I know it's rather sudden but I have a friend that I'd like you to meet," Kurama continued smoothly, chuckling at Yukina's dash from the room. His eyes strayed over to Hiei, taking in how his gaze had followed her out of the room and lingered on the door she'd disappeared through.

"A friend?" Shiori's voice came through on the other end of the line followed by the clink of dishes as she put them in their appropriate places.

"Yes, you heard right mother. You remember Hiei don't you? He came to visit some months ago," Kurama turned his attention from the man who turned to look at him when he heard his name. Whether the apparition liked it or not he'd have to explain his presence somehow, not to mention this would keep his mother from getting the wrong idea about himself and Yukina.

"Of course I remember him Shuichi, how is he doing?" The sound of a cupboard closing gently came through over the phone as she finished with the dishes and turned her attention to the counters.

"Oh he's fine mother, as it turns out he got married." Kurama waved a hand towards said demon when his expression turned to one of disgust, no doubt at comparing something so strong as a bonding with human marriage, "I'd like to bring Yukina over to meet you. She doesn't get out very much and could use some time out in the sun. I was thinking maybe we could all have lunch or something."

"Married?" Shiori paused in wiping the counters down, clearly surprised by the news. "That's wonderful Shuichi, of course I'd be happy to meet her. What time would you like to meet and where?"

"Hmm how about noon at the cafe we normally have lunch at? We're all at the temple right now so it'll take a bit of time to get back to the city." It was a good choice with a wide variety of foods in his opinion. There was a distinct chance that Yukina would need a specialized diet in the coming months but for now this should be suitable for whatever struck her fancy.

"Noon will be fine, it'll give me a chance to finish up some of the stuff here and the rest can wait until I come back," Already Shiori was calculating just how much she could get done before she had to get ready but her son's next statement stopped her in her tracks.

"Yes mother, about this afternoon. I was thinking perhaps we could all go shopping, something to pass the time. As much help as Hiei and I are, we can't do much good when it comes to pregnancies. Since this is her first and twins run in her family, she's understandably nervous." Even Hiei was looking at him with a shocked expression, most likely stunned that he'd just blurted the news over the phone. Unfortunately for both the apparition and Shiori he enjoyed startling people and neither one of them were exempt from becoming targets when the mood to play struck him. Even now Kurama could picture his mother on the other end of the line, staring at the phone wondering if she'd heard right. "Mother? Are you still there?"

Shiori pulled the phone back upon hearing the question, this little revelation was the last thing she'd expected, "I'm here Shuichi. I'm sorry, you just surprised me. I'd be happy to talk to her though I must say this is rather unexpected, how far along is she?" Unspoken was the thought that Hiei must work fast, she tended to ask Shuichi about how his friends were doing and nothing like this had even been hinted at.

"Right around two months but I believe but she can tell you more when we get there, right now we need to get ready if we're going to make it to the cafe on time. We'll see you soon mother," Once Kurama had said goodbye to the woman he closed the phone, chuckling as he did so. While he might have thrown her off balance for a moment he knew it wouldn't take her long to fall into Mother mode and Yukina would be well taken care of. Hiei was likely to get a crash course in parenting as well once Shiori got through with him though, she'd make sure he was aware of how he should be taking care of Yukina throughout her pregnancy. "That is taken care of. Now all we have to do is wait for Yukina."

Somehow Hiei managed to refrain from rolling his eyes. Really, what was the man trying to do? Draw a target on him for his mother to take aim at? Now she'd want to know when they were married, where and who all was invited. Personally he'd rather skip the silliness and just tell the woman that they were merely in a committed relationship but somehow he doubted that would go over well either. The best he could hope for was they all made it through the afternoon in one piece, though the foxes chances had just diminished with that little stunt.

Genkai stepped off of the train and quickly looked for a pay phone. This was one of those times it would have been nice if she'd had a phone line installed at the temple but most of the time it wouldn't have been worth the trouble. At least then she would have had some idea of just where Yusuke was, but instead there was a good chance that she'd have to chase the block head down. Spotting her prey, she quickly made her way over to the phone booth but was irritated to see a rather young man step inside just before she was about to. Narrowing her eyes she glared at the man as he turned around to give her a smug look and smirked when she saw him pale. Even now she still had the ability to intimidate most of these young punks and this time was no exception, the young man quickly vacated the booth leaving the phone to her. "Well that was easy, now if only finding the slacker would be that simple."

Somehow she was certain that he wouldn't be home but it was worth a shot. If nothing else she knew if she skipped it that would invariably be the place that he was just to somehow piss her off without knowing it. Quickly she punched in his phone number and waited for the answering machine to pick up. When the recording finished droning on and on she waited for the beep and then left her message, "You're supposed to be home when I call you Dimwit. I need to speak with you about an issue that concerns Hiei. I'm going to try a few other places but if you get this before I find you just sit tight. I don't want to be chasing your ass around the city any longer than I have to."

With a sigh she hung up and contemplated her options. Really he could be anywhere at this particular minute and the chances Kuwabara was with him were quite high. Speaking with him about such a sensitive subject matter with the redhead present was guaranteed to be a disaster so the first order of business was to determine just where Kuwabara was. The sounds of shuffling feet behind her told Genkai that a line had started to form but she wasn't particularly concerned with how long she made them wait. Tossing more money into the phone she dialed the phone number for the Kuwabara residence and waited to see who, if anyone, picked up.

"Hello?" Shizuru asked, slightly out of breath from her dash to the phone. She'd just stepped out of the shower and barely had time to toss a bathrobe on before the phone had started to ring.

"Shizuru, I'm glad you're home," Genkai started talking without bothering with formal greetings. She'd been about to give up on the thought that anyone was there.

"Genkai?" Shizuru was shocked to hear the old psychic's voice and something in the woman's voice sounded off, warning her that this wasn't just a social call. But what possible reason could she have to be calling her sounding like that? "Is something wrong?"

Depends on how you look at it," Genkai said cryptically as she stared at the masses of people walking past. The last thing she wanted to do was to tell Shizuru about this without knowing just where her brother was. Somehow she doubted the news would flip the brunette out too badly, Shizuru didn't usually overreact to situations and that was a point in her favor. "I need to ask you something first though, do you know where Yusuke is?"
"Yusuke?" Shizuru paused for a moment, trying to recall what he'd said his plans were when she'd seen him earlier that morning. The Toushin's agenda tended to change at the drop of a hat so there was no telling just where he was at the moment. However she did know that he had plans to see Keiko sometime that day, it was just a question of when, "You might try Keiko's place. He'll be heading there sometime today so I'm sure you could catch him that way. Or wait," Shizuru tightened the belt on her robe, "Let me ask Kazuma, he'd probably know where else to find him."

"No Shizuru, just listen to me for a moment," Genkai snapped at the woman on the other end, knowing it would stop her from retrieving her brother. "Whatever you do right now you must not tell Kazuma that there's trouble! Later on he's going to find out anyway but Yusuke has to be there when it happens. Do you understand?"

"No I don't," Shizuru's eyes narrowed as she spoke quietly to the old woman. She could feel something big was happening and Genkai's words just solidified that feeling. "But you are going to tell me what is going on. Since it concerns Kazuma I have a right to know." At the moment she might not be aware of what was happening but she damned sure wasn't going to let the old woman get off the phone without telling her what it was. Since Genkai was so adamant she not tell her brother she was quite certain the old psychic wouldn't hang up on her either until she was positive she'd keep her mouth shut.

"I don't have time for this Shizuru so I'll give you the basics if you give me your word you will not say anything to your brother." It was a risky gamble but one Genkai was certain that wouldn't backfire. If nothing else the brunette would see the reason behind her wanting to keep the man in the dark for the moment. Then she could continue the task of searching for Yusuke.

"You have it, now tell me what's going on. There's no telling when Kazuma is going to come out of that bedroom and ask who I'm talking to." Anxiously Shizuru looked towards the closed bedroom door. Now she was thankful they hadn't bothered installing a phone line in there. If they had he'd probably be listening in even now.

"Alright, just keep this to yourself," Genkai took a deep breath before continuing, "Yukina's pregnant." A long pause came from the other end of the line and Genkai had to wonder if the brunette was aware of how the Koorime generally produced. It wasn't exactly common knowledge and as far as she was aware Yukina hadn't explained that aspect of her biology to the others.

"Oh shit," Shizuru wasn't quite sure what to say in light of this information. Kazuma was going to be crushed, that much she knew. Being aware of just how far the man had gotten with her told her that there was absolutely no chance that the child was his. "No wonder you didn't want him finding out. Who's the father?" A feeling of dread had settled in her stomach, there were very few people that even knew where Yukina was which narrowed the choices down drastically. But who could it possibly be?

"It's complicated Shizuru, so I can't go into too much detail right now," Genkai hesitated as she looked over her shoulder before speaking to the girl once again. Speaking of demons and mating habits out in broad daylight with people listening in was just asking for trouble. "I'll just say that neither of them could help what happened, they were.. influenced and by the time anyone realized what was going on it was too late."

"Then just give me a name Genkai," Shizuru knew that the woman wasn't likely to say much but this went beyond even her brother. If it was one of the other boys then it could mean the breakup of any number of relationships. Hell, she couldn't imagine how Keiko was going to take this if it ended up being Yusuke who was the father. Outside influences or not, the woman was likely to flip.

"Alright, it's Hiei. Don't ask for any more specifics, I can't give them to you right now. If you happen to see Yusuke tell him I'm looking for him but keep your brother out of it for as long as you can, I'm going to try to track the dimwit down." She'd already wasted more than enough time on the phone speaking with the girl and if she didn't want to miss the chance to see her former student then she had to hurry. "I'll speak with you later Shizuru, good bye."

"Wait!" Shizuru cursed when the dial tone sounded in her ear. Now more than ever she wanted to know what the hell just happened between Yukina and Hiei. How in the fuck had the fire apparition been influenced to the point he'd been willing to sleep with his own sister of all people? There was only one thing she was certain of and that was the man wouldn't have done it on purpose, he'd rather have fallen on his own sword first. . Something else had to be at work but she didn't have any ideas what it could possibly be. What had initially started out as a disaster had just snowballed into a full blown catastrophe as soon as Kazuma found out.

Shiori sipped her tea as she calmly waited for her son and his friends to arrive. Knowing how Shuichi tended to be, she'd arrived at the cafe fifteen minutes early just to make sure that she was there when they arrived. Now it was five minutes til and just as she expected her son walked through the door, accompanied by two other people, one of which was very familiar. Eagerly she stood up and embraced the redhead warmly before turning to Hiei and who she could only assume was Yukina, "Hiei it's so good to see you again and this must be Yukina. Congratulations to the both of you!"

"Thank you Mrs. Hatanaka," Yukina said politely to the woman before moving over to the table that Kurama was now directing them towards. Covertly she watched the woman while she spoke with her son. It was apparent where he'd gotten his mannerisms but seeing the two of them seated next to each other only served to further enhance the hard edge that separated Kurama from a normal human. Of course if you didn't know what to look for one might miss it entirely but to a demon there was no mistaking the dangerous edge that he maintained under that polite mask.

"So Shuichi told me the two of you got married?" Shiori could see that the girl was uncomfortable and tried to draw her into a conversation. Honestly she hadn't been at all sure of what to expect before seeing the woman who had somehow managed to capture Hiei's heart. The woman's strange hair coloring had thrown her for a moment but truly Yukina seemed to have a gentle personality and there was no denying that the surly man sitting next to her did indeed care for her.

Yukina nodded quickly, giving a shy smile to the woman sitting across from her, "We did," she paused trying to decide just how long ago this human ceremony was supposed to have taken place. "It's been three months now." While she certainly wasn't one for lying in this instance it was necessary. For the most part she hoped that the woman would speak to Kurama and Hiei for any necessary details. They were far more adept at handling situations that called for deception and she felt uncomfortable with Shiori's attention centered on her.

"So how did you both meet?" Shiori hadn't missed the slightly troubled expression as her son kept looking at the smaller woman and she could tell that he was worried about something. It was an uncharacteristic show of concern from the man, unless of course she could be counted among one of his closest friends. But if that was the case why hadn't Shuichi brought the girl around before? Their talk was interrupted for a moment when the waitress arrived and handed them their menus and took their order for drinks. Soon though the waitress had left again, leaving Yukina free to answer the question she'd posed.

Kurama decided to intervene, knowing that a dose of the truth, carefully fabricated would be the easiest lie to keep. Too many falsehoods would mean potential missteps later, something they couldn't afford. "We don't talk about it much mother, you see the first time either of us met Yukina someone had decided that she made a good target for a kidnapping. We managed to stop the man from hurting her and over the past couple of years they grew closer. Though I think the depths of their feelings still surprise even them from time to time.

"Oh my god," Shiori paled at hearing such a thing. That Yukina had been forced to endure such a thing was terrible, she couldn't begin to imagine what it must have been like. "How old were you when this happened?" While she wasn't going to come out and ask what the kidnapper had likely wanted her for she had a good idea. The woman sitting across from her couldn't be any older than 18 or 19 if she were to make a guess. Perhaps even slightly younger but she doubted it, Hiei didn't seem to be the type to take an underage bride. The man had far too much honor than to do such a thing.

The question confused Yukina for a moment and she couldn't help but wonder what her age had to do with anything. However to tell Shiori she was approximately one hundred years old wouldn't work either. Finally she settled on Keiko's age, it seemed to be a safe enough number for couples to enter into a relationship without being questioned. "I'm eighteen now and this was nearing four years ago. I've done my best to put it behind me though, can we talk of something else?" There was no way she wanted to venture down memory lane and be forced to remember everything that Tarukane had done to her in his quest for more money, more power. Even now tears gathered at the thought of the man that had died trying to save her.

"Of course dear, forgive me. I didn't mean to pry," Shiori said apologetically. Bringing up bad memories had not been her intention and desperately she sought to correct the problem. While the look Hiei was now throwing her way wasn't outright hostile there was a definite anger directed towards her. No doubt it was over concern for Yukina and she honestly couldn't blame him. The man had a family to consider after all. "So.. Shuichi mentioned that you are expecting?"

"Oh yes," At this Yukina did smile, thankful that the conversation was turning to something she was willing to speak of. "Finding out about the twins was quite unexpected and took a little bit to get used to the idea but... I'm happy and I'm not sorry that it happened." As she spoke she could feel Hiei's gaze on her but she didn't dare turn towards him. Most likely she'd stunned him with her proclamation and she could feel just how startled he was through the bond. Would he be disgusted with her now, hearing that she wasn't sorry?

Shiori nearly giggled seeing the look that Hiei was giving the smaller woman now. At first his eyes had widened to near impossible proportions before they'd softened dramatically. As he moved to put his hand over hers the motion had been almost hesitant, like he hadn't been certain what her reaction would be. "More often than not children come as a complete surprise but not an unwelcome one. I'm sure the two of you will do just fine."

For the first time since they'd arrived at the cafe Hiei spoke, his voice uncharacteristically soft, "You're right, we will do just fine. No matter what happens." Though he knew they would come up again Hiei was determined to shove his insecurities to the side and do whatever his sister needed to ensure that she remained as happy as she was now, thinking of the children she carried. Maybe, just maybe he could come to accept his new role in her life now. Not that of a brother, but as a mate and a father to their children.
