Chapter 13: The Fair

The next morning, the two of them woke up at the same time.

“Morning,” Yusuke said, rubbing his eyes.

“What’re we going to do today?” Koenma asked. Yusuke grinned.

“We’re gonna go to the end of summer fair.”

Koenma blinked. “Um, Yusuke, what’s a fair?”

Yusuke sighed. “C’mon, I’ll show you.”

When they got to the fair, Yusuke smiled.

“They hold this every year, and I always come. It usually ends up with a fight against Kuwabara,” he said, laughing. He looked over at Koenma. “You okay?”

Koenma nodded. “Yeah… Thinking, is all.”

Yusuke frowned, but said nothing. He seemed kinda distracted… Then something caught his eye.

“Oh, Koenma! Come on! They got Skeeball back!”

“What?” Koenma asked, confused. Yusuke shook his head. “Just c’mon!”

Koenma followed Yusuke over to the booth, and Yusuke looked back at him.

“Now I’m assuming you’ve never played this before, am I right?”

Koenma nodded.

“Okay then, you take a ball, then you roll it up the ramp, and it lands in a hole. The different holes give you different amounts of points. It tells you how many points it gives over the hole. Got that?”

Koenma nodded. “Yeah, I think so. Let me try it.”

His first try didn’t get a very high score. Yusuke smiled.

“Don’t worry, that happens to everyone once in a while. Now watch me.”

Yusuke got a much higher score, and the booth owner was impressed.

“Well, sonny, choose a prize.”

Yusuke looked around, and his gaze fell over a small stuffed dinosaur. He pointed.

“That one.”

The booth owner raised an eyebrow, but didn’t object, and handed Yusuke the toy. Yusuke took it and turned to Koenma.

“I want you to have this,” he said, handing it to Koenma.

Koenma shook his head. “I should be giving something to you, Yusuke. You’re letting me live in your house.”

Yusuke shook his head. “Nah, I want you to have it. Somethin’ to use when you’re annoyed at someone and want to punch something.”
Koenma laughed. “I should have known you’d say something like that, Yusuke.”

He put the toy in his pocket with his pacifier.

“So, what are we going to do now?”

Yusuke shrugged. “I don’t know, let’s go look around.”

“Hi!”

They turned around and saw Masaru standing behind them.

(You know, the kid Yusuke saved.)

Yusuke was staring at him. “You’re that kid that I died pointlessly for!”

Masaru laughed. “And you’re that funny man who saved me!”

“Starting September first, I can go back to Reikai,” Koenma said randomly to Yusuke.

“Am I ever going to see you again?” Masaru asked.

(I have no clue why he cares, just wrote that for no reason.)

Koenma shrugged. “I’m… not exactly sure… I’ll be here until September, but I think Dad’s gonna keep me in Spirit World for a while.”

Masaru looked down. “Oh.”

(How does he even know what Spirit World is? I dunno.)

“But I’ll see what I can do,” Koenma said. “He’ll have to let me go eventually.”

Masaru smiled and nodded. “Okay!”

Then his mother came over. Masaru’s mother frowned.

“Masaru, come along, I want to show you something.”

Masaru sighed. “Yes, Mom. Bye Yusuke, bye Koenma!”

Yusuke blinked. “How does he know our names?” Koenma shrugged.

Masaru’s mother made a noise of impatience and pulled Masaru along.

Koenma sighed. “She doesn’t like me.”

“So? She’s an adult, and adults don’t like teenagers.”

Koenma rolled his eyes. “Yeah.”

There were a few moments of silence, then Yusuke grinned.

“Let’s go eat. I’m hungry.”

Koenma nodded. “Okay, what are we going to eat?”

Yusuke looked around. “Hmm… let’s go look at what they got.”

Yusuke ended up having a cheese steak, while Koenma ended up getting a box of Sweet Tarts. They sat down at a table, and Yusuke got them each a fruit punch.

“I don’t care what Hiei says, I like Sweet Tarts,” Koenma said, eating another.

Yusuke shuddered. “I don’t know how some people take the sourness. It’s… disgusting.”

Koenma laughed. “You just need to get used to it, Yusuke.”

Yusuke shrugged. “Whatever.”

A few minutes later, he stood up. “I’ll be right back, Koenma.” He left in the direction of the restroom.

Koenma sipped his drink, looking around. There were a lot of people here… and three girls were walking over… He was glad he was wearing a headband.

“Hey boy,” one said. “Who ya here with?”

“Why do you care?” Koenma muttered.

“Because we wanna hang with ya,” the girl replied, sitting at the table. The two other girls sat down as well.

“Umm… I think I should be going…” Koenma said softly, getting up. Usually it was the other way around, with a GIRL being approached by drunk BOYS who insist on hanging around.

One of the girls tugged him back down. “No, boy, you are stayin’ here!”

Koenma pulled away and walked away quickly.

Where’s Yusuke?’ * * *

Heh, I had fun with this chapter. I don’t know why I’m having this scenario, it just came to me while I was listening to music, so I wrote it down. I also don’t know why I had Masaru care about seeing Koenma, and he probably shouldn’t have told Masaru about Spirit World, but oh well, this is fiction. The cheese steak part is dedicated to my older brother who loves cheese steaks. Next chapter up Tuesday at the latest, hopefully. Don’t know how hard school will be.

Review if you wish.
