Chapter One: Discovery
Kaline's POV
"What do you think?" I asked my friend Cassie, gesturing to the many pieces of my artwork around us. We had the living room almost entirely covered. Even our laps had drawings in them. "Which ones should I put in my portfolio and send to the colleges?"
Cassie was my best friend, and the most supportive friend that I could ever ask for. With her shoulder length brown hair, blue-green eyes, calm attitude and nice figure, she was the perfect boy-magnet. She use to have a habit of accidentally attracting the guys away from me, even though she never meant to. Of course, after she smacked enough guys over their heads for dumping me to try and go out with her, a lot less jerks bothered me. I also found it funny to see Cassie kick a guy's butt. She was much stronger than any normal guy. There were days when I wondered just how strong she was.
"I don't have a clue, but this guy here is cute," Cassie replied, picking up a picture that I had painted of Kurama.
"He is, isn't he?" I stated, smiling and blushing slightly at the same time. She was talking about my boyfriend and my chosen mate.
"Do you know who he is?" she inquired, putting down the painting and picking up another picture of Kurama. "You sure have a lot of him."
"He's one of the few who'll model for me," I told her, my voice very quiet. "His name's Kurama."
"Where'd you meet him?" Cassie wondered. "And does he have a cute friend?"
"I met him at work... hey! What do you mean a cute friend?!" I stared at her surprised.
Cassie laughed. "I can tell by your blush that you like him. You've probably already laid claim to him."
I rubbed a spot on my shirt right where my collarbone met my shoulder. The mark was hidden beneath the material. It was where Kurama had marked me almost a year ago. The mark meant that he had laid claim to me and that I was off limits to all males. Unfortunately for me, it only meant something to demon males. Human males cared less about the little bite mark.
"Um... I'm not sure if you'd like any of his friends," I said. "One is taken, one likes a girl already, and the third..." I was thinking about Hiei, the fire demon with the most arrogant, egotistical attitude I had ever met. There was no way I would ever set my friend up with him. He'd probably end up calling her a stupid ningen the entire time "I don't think that you'd like the third. He can be a big jerk sometimes."
"Too bad," Cassie commented, picking up another one of my paintings. It was one of my very, very few watercolor landscapes. "This ain't all that bad. Perhaps you should send this one in."
"I do like that one," I agreed. It had taken me forever to do that one painting. I had very little talent with watercolor. I was much better with acrylic and oil paints. I was the best at pencils: colored and graphite.
"Oh, and this one is amazing!" Cassie exclaimed, handing me the watercolor she had just been talking about and picking up an oil painting. It was of Reikai, the spirit world where one of my 'employers' lived and worked. I had done the painting off of some pictures that Hiei had given me two Christmases ago.
"I like that one as well," I said, taking it and putting it in my lap. All of my work that was going in my portfolio was being placed in my lap. The ones that weren't going in the portfolio were on the couch.
"And this one is lovely," Cassie stated. She was about to say something else, but she froze in shock when a very handsome red head suddenly appeared in the middle of my living room.
Kurama had just teleported right in front of me to the only spot on the entire floor that didn't have a painting or drawing covering it. He was facing me, his back to Cassie. His green eyes were dancing lively, and the smile on his face was catching.
Of course, I couldn't think of anything to say to Kurama. He had just appeared in the middle of my living room... right in front of one of my friends who wasn't suppose to know anything about demons! Koenma was going to be so ticked!
"You look surprised to see me," Kurama said sweetly, kneeling down and giving me a quick kiss. "Did you forget that I could travel through dimensions as well?"
I knew what Kurama was talking about. I lived in a separate world from him and the other spirit detectives Hiei, Yusuke, and Kuwabara. I spent much of my time helping them fight evil demons. I was even half demon, while Hiei and Kurama were full demons. Yusuke and Kuwabara were just very strong humans.
I had many powers that allowed me to do quite a few different things, and back when Kurama and I had first met, I healed a hole in his stomach. In doing so, I had bestowed upon him the same powers that I had. Since I could travel though the dimensional barrier, so could Kurama. He had just never done it before.
"Um... Kurama?" I began, but couldn't quite think of a way to tell him that there was a human girl sitting behind him in a state of shock.
"I have two pieces of good news for you," Kurama told me, giving me another kiss.
I finally came to a decision about what to do about Cassie and interrupted him before he could say anything else. "Kurama, look behind you first," I ordered him softly.
"Very well," he replied, turning around. When he saw Cassie and how shocked she was, he nearly acted just as surprised. "We have a small problem it seems."
"Yeah," I agreed, burying my head in my heads. "Koenma's going to be furious. No one else is suppose to know anything about..." I groaned, feeling my normal desire to get up and pace since I felt aggravated and confused.
"Perhaps we'd better explain things to her," Kurama suggested, wincing a little. He felt bad about blowing our cover.
"And then make her take a vow of silence," I added, hanging my head. What had Kurama just gotten us into?
