Chapter Two: Explanations
Cassie's POV
I stared at the guy who had just suddenly appeared in the middle of the floor. He had just gone POOF and appeared. My common sense was telling me that it wasn't possible, but there he was, standing right in front of me. What was even more shocking was that he was the guy from so many of Kaline's pictures. She had called him Kurama.
Well, things got even stranger when he kissed Kaline. I hadn't been expecting that... and I certainly hadn't thought that he would act so... cheery. He acted so friendly with Kaline, but he hadn't even noticed me who was sitting right behind him. Of course, I was too busy having a heart attack to make much noise. He was also too enthralled with my friend to take much notice of anything else.
When he finally turned around and looked at me, he looked like he was about to have a heart attack as well. I watched quietly as he and Kaline exchanged a few words. They had agreed to explain things to me.
I had only one question: What in the world was going on!?!? I was a sensible person. I knew that people weren't supposed to just appear out of thin air. I knew that Kaline didn't let strange guys walk up and kiss her. For heaven's sake, for the past year and a half she hadn't even been on a date with any guy. She had just brushed off all offers.
"How about we go to my room? There's more room in there, so I'll actually be able to pace," Kaline suggested to Kurama. She sounded very nervous and a little upset. The guy just appearing must have shocked her as much as it had me.
Kurama looked around at all the drawings. "I'll meet you in there," he said, and then POOF. He had just disappeared.
I watched Kaline shake her head sadly. She looked distraught at the moment, which made me even more nervous. My friend was rarely ever like that. True, she did have a temper, but so few things ever worried her. Even the biggest, strongest, meanest guy in the school didn't bother her. Yet, somehow, this one guy appearing had sent her into a state of such nervousness that it was almost unbelievable.
"C'mon, Cassie," she said, moving some of the paintings aside and placing a hand on my shoulder. "It's about time I told you a lot of things."
Then, I felt something really strange and suddenly I was no longer in the living room.
I was sitting in Kaline's bedroom on the floor! My brain was having immense problems computing that bit of information.
"Please try to relax, Cassie," Kaline pleaded with me as she began to pace alongside her bed (which Kurama was sitting on). "I'm trying to think of a way to explain all of this..." She frowned, rubbing the back of her head. She stopped pacing long enough to look at Kurama. "Any ideas?"
The red head looked at me, then back at Kaline. "You could always start from the beginning," he suggested simply.
"Where's the beginning?" she countered, resuming her pacing. "When I met Yusuke? Or perhaps when I first discovered my powers?"
"Perhaps the latter would be the better one," Kurama replied, giving Kaline a comforting look.
Kaline bit her bottom lip and nodded in reply. "Okay, here goes," she said, finally sitting down on the bed next to Kurama. "Cassie, a few years ago I discovered that I could do... a few unusual things. It started with me accidentally reading a few people's minds, but it quickly escalated into other things which I'm not going into just yet." She paused. "I learned how to travel to another dimension and even through time. Not too long after that, I met Yusuke... who was dead at the time. Surprisingly, I could see him, even though he was a ghost."
"What?" I interrupted. I could have sworn that Kaline had just said that she had met a ghost. That wasn't possible. Ghosts didn't exist. All souls went to heaven or hell. They most definitely didn't stay on Earth.
"As I said, Yusuke was a ghost. He's alive and well now, thanks to Koenma, Botan, Keiko... and maybe even Kuwabara."
"Who are they?" I asked, very curious. "All the people you just mentioned. Who are they?"
"Give me a minute, and I'll tell you," Kaline replied grumpily. "Botan is a ferrygirl... well, in common terms, she's the grim reaper. Koenma is the son of King Yama, the guy in charge of the entire spirit world. He deals mostly with the paper work that King Yama probably doesn't want to do. Keiko is Yusuke's sorta-girlfriend, and Kuwabara is a friend of Yusuke's.
"Okay... Not too long after I had met Yusuke, three special objects had gone missing from Reikai, the spirit world where Koenma stays. The Orb of Baal, the Shadow Sword, and Forlorn Hope had been stolen by the greatest thief in all Makai... Kurama."
"Wait a minute," I interjected quickly. "I could have sworn that you just called this guy here the greatest thief in all Makai -whatever that place is."
"Makai is where all the demons live," Kaline told me, sighing softly. She was not a happy camper. "And Kurama is the greatest thief in all Makai. He's an awesome fighter as well."
"Demons?!" I stared at my friend in disbelief. Demons did not exist. There was no possible way.
"Yes. Now, on with the explanation," Kaline continued. "Hiei, a fire demon, got the Shadow Sword, another guy got the Orb of Baal, while Kurama kept the Forlorn Hope. I didn't get to meet the guy with the orb, nor did I see Yusuke get the Forlorn Hope from Kurama, but I did get to see Yusuke's battle with Hiei.
"That was when I first met Kurama. I was busy helping Botan keep Keiko from turning into a demon when Kurama walked up with a hole in his stomach."
I gave Kaline a confused look so she would stop and confirm what she had just said. I had either heard her wrong, or she had accidentally made a mistake and said something that she had not meant to. People did not just walk around with holes in them. Of course, people didn't just go and appear out of nowhere into the middle of someone's living room.
"Yes, I did just say that he had a hole in his stomach," Kaline repeated. "I healed Kurama, accidentally giving him the same powers that I had. Luckily, Yusuke won the fight against Hiei. Then Yusuke went to Genkai's to train. There was a whole deal with Rando, but I'm not going to worry too much about it. If you're curious about it, remind me and I'll tell you about it later."
Kaline cleared her throat and continued. "After the six month long training session that Yusuke had with Genkai, he came back and we -I mean Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei and I- were sent to get some flute from the four saint beasts. Then Yusuke sent on a rescue mission with just Kuwabara and me. We rescued a ice apparition named Yukina. A little after that, Yusuke, Kurama, Kuwabara, Hiei, Genkai, and I went to the dark tournament. I went to cheer them on, just as Keiko, Botan and Kuwabara's sister did."
"I thought that Hiei fought against Yusuke?" I inquired, even more confused. My brain was having serious problems computing all the strange information. "What's he doing fighting alongside Yusuke?"
"Well, he switched sides," Kaline answered, giving me a half smile. "Although there are times when I do wonder why."
"This is all a little bit much," I commented, rubbing my temples. "I don't think that I can believe a word you're saying. I'm debating whether I need to call the insane asylum and check you, me, or the both of us in."
"Why don't you wait till I'm done telling you everything?" Kaline told me, trying her best to keep her voice calm and even.
I could tell that Kaline was tearing herself up inside for some reason. Strangely enough, Kurama seemed to sense it as well, because he put his arm around her comfortingly.
Kaline snuggled a little closer to Kurama as she continued. "During the tournament, Genkai passed on her power to Yusuke, and then Toguro killed her. The rest of us survived the tournament, wished to bring her back to life, and went on with our lives. The next thing that happened was last summer. We were all sent onto a demon yacht to investigate a few rumors about the demons selling human slaves... instead we found that the demons had somehow acquired the three special items. We got the items back without really any problems, and that pretty much brings you up to date. Nothing really important has happened since then."
"Aren't you forgetting one little detail that she might find important?" Kurama asked Kaline, his tone a little playful.
Kaline gave him a blank look. "What detail?"
"The fact that you're not quite human," he replied gently.
My friend smacked herself in the head. "I completely forgot about that!" She sighed, looking down at me. "I'm a half demon... a half cat demon to be exact."
Okay, now that bit of information caused my brain to go into overload. "Now I know that you've got to be joking," I stated, shaking my head at her. I was not going to believe it. I wasn't going to believe any of it.
"Perhaps if you showed her..." Kurama told Kaline, nudging her.
She gave him a half smile and stood up. "I think you're right."
"What are you two talking about now?" I wanted to know.
"I want you to watch me very closely. I'm going to prove to you that I'm a half demon," Kaline informed me.
I gave her a doubtful look. "I don't think so."
"Just give me a moment," she replied as she began to faintly glow. A moment later, a very different female stood in front of me... complete with cat ears, a cat tail, black hair and bright blue eyes. My friend had just become a cat demon.
I stared at her. "Oh, my."
