Chapter Three: Plans
Kaline's POV
I stared down at my friend, amazed. I had just changed into a cat demon, and all she could say was 'oh, my'. She was either in denial, or she was just in shock. I was betting on the latter one.
"Kurama, you get to tell her all about Makai, Reikai, and the spirit detective stuff," I told him, sighing. "I'm tired of talking."
"Very well," Kurama agreed. "Cassie, I believe that Kaline told you that demons live in Makai?" Cassie nodded her head. "That place is very much like Earth, except mainly demons live there. I was there for 1,000 years."
"What?!" Cassie shouted, shocked.
I shook my head sadly. "Kurama, you sometimes pick the worst moment to reveal certain bits of information."
"He's telling the truth?" Cassie inquired, staring at me, her mouth hanging open.
"Yeah."
"But?" She looked very, very confused.
"I'm a demon," Kurama explained. "Demons can live for an extremely long time."
"How long?" Cassie asked, curious. I wasn't sure why she asked that, but I was very glad she had. I had no clue what the answer to that was.
Kurama shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. No demon has died from old age."
"So what happens to them?" she wanted to know.
"They get killed by other demons." His manner was so... emotionless. Like he was talking about the weather or something peaceful. I had seen him talk like that before, but it was just for a short amount of time. It was always a shock to hear him speak in that tone of voice.
Cassie nearly had a heart attack when he said that. She was normally a calm person who could easily deal with anything life decided to throw her way. What Kurama and I were telling her was just a little too much.
"As for Reikai," Kurama continued, leaving the subject of Makai and demons alone. "That is where Koenma and Botan live. It's just another name for the spirit world. People go there when they die."
"So, if Yusuke was dead at one time, why didn't he go there?" Cassie asked. She obviously didn't think that the things he was saying made sense.
"Um..." he drifted off, unsure of what to say.
I sighed, stepping in to explain things. "Yusuke did go there for a little while, but he got to leave so he could come back to life."
"Oh," Cassie said.
"Reikai is where we sometimes go to get assignments," Kurama stated, not really giving Cassie time to digest anything. "And as for the spirit detectives, it is a team made up of Kaline, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei and myself. We are given missions by Koenma, and we do quite a bit of fighting, mostly again demons."
She stared at the kitsune, a confused expression on her face. "Okay."
"I had an easier time explaining things to Salova," I commented, rubbing my temples.
"That was because you took her to meet everyone in our world," Kurama reminded me.
"It looks like I might have to do that again," I said, running a hand through my still black hair. I hadn't changed out of my demon form yet.
"You could just bring her along to my graduation," he told me, smiling. "I graduate on Thursday next week."
"That's the day before my graduation day," I replied, feeling a little bit better. I then looked over at my friend. "Would you like to watch Kurama walk across the stage? Yusuke and some others would probably be there."
Cassie thought about it for a minute. She seemed to be debating if she even believed a word Kurama or I had said about anything. "I suppose so..." she finally answered.
"Yea!!" I paused for a moment. "Was that one of your pieces of good news?" I asked, and Kurama nodded his head in reply. "Then what was the other piece?"
Kurama smiled. "Kuwabara won a trip for 12 to Hawaii."
"The lucky fool!" I exclaimed. "He can't fight, but he sure is darn lucky."
"He invited you... along with Yukina and the others," Kurama said. "He's got a long list of people, including Touya and Jin, but he needs one more person besides you."
A nice little idea struck me. "When you go back, would you ask Kuwabara if I could bring one of my friends?"
"Sure," Kurama replied, knowing exactly what I was thinking.
I looked at Cassie. "How would you like to go with? It would be the perfect chance for you to get to know my other friends."
Cassie considered it for a moment. "How long is the trip? And when is it?"
"The plane leaves the day after Kaline graduates, and the trip is for one week," Kurama replied.
"Alright. I'll go if the guy... Kuwabara doesn't mind," Cassie said.
"Yea!!" I cheered. "It'll be so much fun if you go."
"I may not be able to go though," Cassie reminded me calmly.
"If Kuwabara says you can't, I'll tell Shizuru on him," I responded, an evil glint in my eyes.
"Who's Shizuru?"
"Kuwabara's sister," I explained. "She can easily kick his butt. She's certainly done it before."
"Is she a spirit detective?"
"No."
"I wonder why..."
"I don't have a clue," I said, shrugging my shoulders. If Shizuru could beat up Kuwabara, then why wasn't she a detective instead of him? It was a really good question.
"Well, Kaline," Kurama said, getting up. "If I'm going to talk to Kuwabara, then I'd better get going. I not good at time traveling like you are."
"Okay," I replied. "I'll see you on Thursday then."
"And then on Saturday, we leave for Hawaii," he added, giving me a quick kiss. "Bye." With that said, he vanished.
Cassie stared at where Kurama had been just a moment before. She was still having problems accepting everything that she had been told.
"I'm sorry about all this. I never meant for you to find out," I told her, trying to smile. "Would you like me to explain anything more thoroughly? Do you have any questions I might be able to answer?"
She thought for a moment. "I know that you don't recommend any of his friends... but does he have a brother?" she asked, humor in her voice.
"I think so..." I thought for a moment. "But I believe that he's quite a bit younger." Summoning my spirit energy, I changed back into my human form. "So are you okay with everything yet?"
"I'm getting there. I'll be better once I've slept on it," Cassie replied. "But I do want to know how you to got together."
I smiled and told her about what had happened two Christmases ago. That eventually progressed into me telling her some of what had happened on the yacht. I only told her... certain things. Many parts were left out. I figured that there was nothing wrong with telling her that Kurama and I had slept in the same room. I was not about to tell her that we had slept in the same bed. If I told her that, then she would start thinking that something had happened that hadn't.
After a few hours of chit chat, Cassie finally went home. Sometime during our talk she fully accepted what Kurama and I had told her. She even started joking about how she thought she was going to see little Kalines and Kuramas running around soon. I just scoffed at that, but I did laugh along.
Once Cassie was gone, I was left alone to finish figuring out what pieces of artwork to put in my portfolio. Lucky for me, I did eventually decide what pictures I liked the most. With my decision made, I went to bed with a smile on my face.
