Chapter Nine: The Beach House

Kaline's POV

"Nice place," Yusuke said, whistling in appreciation. He stared at the large beach house for a few moments. "I can't believe we get to stay here."

"You'd better believe it, Urameshi," Kuwabara stated, smiling. "And if there's a master bedroom, it's mine."

"What are you talking about, Kuwabara?" Yusuke demanded to know. "That would be a waste of a perfectly good room. You should just sleep outside where you belong."

"Hey! Take that back, Urameshi!" the carrot-top ordered, shaking his fist at the spirit detective.

I sighed sadly as the two boys began to argue. "Do they always have to act like rivals? Can't they call a truce just for two weeks?" I asked Kurama, exasperated.

"It is in their nature to fight," Kurama replied, chuckling. "We will just have to wait out this fight. Kuwabara is the only one with a key to the front door."

"Ack!" I exclaimed, then an idea hit me. "You're the greatest thief in all Makai. Why don't you just pickpocket the guy?" Kurama looked at me like I was insane. "Kuwabara's too dangerous at the moment to even attempt it, huh?" He nodded. "Damn."

"Do the biggie and Urameshi always fight?" Jin asked, watching the two guys getting in each others faces.

"It looks that way, Jin," Touya replied calmly.

"Are all you people just going to stand outside the entire day?" Cassie inquired from the front porch. "I would like to take a look inside and unpack. Carrying around these bags isn't all that much fun, you know."

Yusuke and Kuwabara stopped arguing and looked at Cassie.

"Perhaps we should put Cassie on the team as well," Koenma commented. "She seems to be very effective at stopping arguments. I've never seen anyone get those two to shut up so quickly."

"Yes, that would be a good idea if Cassie could fight as well," Botan replied. "But I don't think that she can. Her spirit energy is as low as any human's."

"Good point," Koenma responded, nodding his head.

"Well, Kuwabara?" Cassie insisted, resting her calm gaze on the boy who was still standing there.

"I'm sure that Yukina would like to go inside now too," I added, knowing exactly what kind of reaction that would cause.
"Oh, of course! Forgive me, my lovely Yukina!" Kuwabara exclaimed, running up to the front door. He pulled a key out of his pocket and unlocked the door.

"Hn. It was about time, baka," Hiei told Kuwabara as he walked into the beach house.

"You can't talk to me like that!" he declared, glaring at the fire demon's back.

Hiei didn't even turn around or pause. "Hn. Of course I can."

"Relax, Kuwabara," Cassie said gently. "I'm sure that he's just trying to get under your skin."

"Oh, yeah. You're probably right." Kuwabara seemed to accept that easily.

"Thank you, Cassie," I said gratefully as I walked up to her. "I was not looking forward to another fight."

"I know," Cassie replied. "That's why I said that, but if you hadn't wanted the fight stopped, I would have agreed with Hiei."

"You've got to be joking." I gave my friend a shocked look, and she began to giggle. "What?"

"I was joking," she informed me.

Kurama chuckled. "Perhaps you should learn to read your friend's expressions as well as she reads Hiei's."

"Maybe," I responded. "Let's go inside now. Everyone else is already in there." I went through the front door, lugging my one bag with me. Cassie followed with her three bags, and Kurama was right behind her with his single suitcase.

The first place I found was the living room where everyone was gathered in. They all seemed to be talking (actually arguing) about something. Even Jin and Touya didn't look all that happy.

"What's going on?" I asked as I set my suitcase down on the couch. The living room was large, and easily accommodated all twelve of us. The couches and chairs were of fine quality, and the carpet was soft and plush.

"Well, it seems that we have six rooms, and an uneven number of boys and girls. One room is going to have to contain a boy and a girl," Botan replied. "And it seems that no one can decide who those two people are going to be."

"I think that me and Yukina should get it!" Kuwabara declared, glaring at Hiei.

"Over your dead body," Hiei retorted, giving the human a death glare.

"I'm not sleeping with no strange lass," Jin protested, looking less than happy.

"I believe that we can solve this problem easily," Koenma began, but everyone ignored him.

I began to mutter things under my breath that no one would ever want to repeat. My vacation was quickly becoming one big fighting match, and that was not the way I wanted it to be.

"Enough! Quiet!" Cassie ordered in a loud voice. Everyone but Yusuke and Kuwabara stopped talking.

"Yusuke!" Keiko snapped, smacking him on the side of the head. "Shut up!"

"Ouch," Yusuke complained, rubbing the sore spot.

"Is Kazuma going to stop talking too?" Yukina asked sweetly, her face one of pure innocence.

"Oh, of course, Yukina," Kuwabara replied quickly.

Cassie swept her eyes across the room for a brief moment before she spoke up again. "I believe that Koenma had an idea. Why don't we let him speak?"

"Thank you, Cassie," Koenma said. "It's hard to get these barbarians to listen." He paused while some of the boys grumbled. "Now, as I was about to say, why don't we just let Kaline and Kurama share a room? They've done it before, and this time it will be for a much shorter time span."

"What?" Cassie looked at Koenma, very surprised. "I thought that you were going to volunteer yourself and Botan."

"Now why would I go and do a thing like that?" Koenma countered, chuckling. "Besides, they'll get to sleep in separate beds this time."

Cassie looked over at me, a shocked look on her face. "You left that one little detail out when you told me about the yacht, didn't you?"

"Um... yeah," I admitted sheepishly. I had been hoping that Cassie would never find out. She was going to tease me until the day I died since she finally knew, and I had so wanted to avoid any more teasing.

"It seems like the new girl is going to yell at Kaline now," Jin said, sounding amused.

"We'll talk about this later," Cassie said, a devious sparkle in her eyes. I knew that look. She was going to threaten me with blackmail.

"Oh, no," I whispered, wincing. I did have counter-blackmail, but I didn't dare mention it until the film was developed.

"Kaline, how about we go unpack now?" Kurama suggested, voice calm.

"Sure," I replied, smiling. He always found a way to relieve my tension or nervousness. I just wanted to stick around long enough to see where Cassie was going to get stuck.

"Keiko and I will be sharing a room," Botan said. "Let's go unpack now as well." The two girls walked off, talking and giggling about something or other

"The biggest bedroom is for me and Yukina," Kuwabara said firmly.

"I don't think so," Hiei growled, one of his fists beginning to catch on fire.

Cassie noticed that another fight was about to break out, so she stepped right between the two. "I'll share a room with Yukina. After all, I'm the only girl left," she said as she gave Kuwabara a 'behave' look. "C'mon, Yukina. Let's get unpacked."

Sighing happily, I followed Kurama with Cassie and Yukina right behind me. Just seconds later, the rest of the boys followed.

The rooms were along a long hallway with three rooms on each side. Since everyone had finally decided who was going to stay in which room, it was easy to see that more fights were going to break out.

On the left side, Jin and Touya shared a room at the end of the hallway. In the next room was Keiko and Botan, and in the one closest to the living room was Kuwabara and Yusuke. On the right side was Koenma and Hiei at the end, Yukina and Cassie in the middle, and Kurama and myself in the room nearest to the living room.

In my room, I placed my suitcase on the bed and opened it. The room was very nice, with two double beds, a very large window, a bathroom, a night stand between the two beds, a walk-in closet, a door to the hallway, and a connecting door to Yukina and Cassie's room. The walls were a cream color, and the carpet and comforters on the beds were a dark green.

As I was unpacking, Kurama stopped every once in a while to watch. "You're using the same bag as last time, aren't you?" he asked, chuckling. "The one that was spelled for infinite storage space."

"Of course," I replied, shaking my head sadly. "How else would I fit everything in it that I need?" I proceeded to stuff my clothing in the dresser.

"How much did you pack?" he asked, staring.

"Um..." I drifted off and looked at my suitcase. "I don't remember. My closet at home's empty now though."

Kurama shook his head sadly, smiling. "I shouldn't have asked."

I didn't get a chance to reply, because Botan barged in, a huge grin on her face.

"We're going to the beach," she said brightly. "Are you two coming? The beach is pretty much right outside our front door after all."

I laughed at her enthusiasm. "Sure. Just give me some time to change."

"I'll change in the bathroom," Kurama volunteered, taking his swim-trunks out of the dresser and going into the bathroom.

"Okay," I said, turning to Botan. "We'll meet you outside on the beach."

"Alright," Botan replied, shutting the door behind her as she left.

Giggling, I got changed. Botan was so funny in her extreme enthusiasm that I couldn't help but laugh a little.

My clothes got laid out on the bed as I put on my one-piece swimsuit. As I was grabbing a towel, Kurama came out of the bathroom.

"Let's go now," he said, giving me a look of approval. He seemed to be very pleased by how I looked. Of course, he looked just as fine in only his dark green swim-trunks with all his muscles showing.

I blushed and grabbed his hand. "To the beach then."
