Chapter Eight: The Flight's End
"Yusuke Urameshi!" a girl screamed, followed by a slap.
I opened my eyes, not really happy that I had been woken up. I was about to get up and see what was going on, when I noticed exactly what position I was in. My headphones had slipped off of my ears to hang around my neck, and I had somehow ended up with my head leaning on Hiei's shoulder. One thing that was even stranger was Hiei leaning his head on mine, deep in sleep.
The girl's scream hadn't woken him up, which was probably a good thing. Judging by how Hiei had acted so far, he probably hadn't meant for us to end up in our present positions. He would most likely become furious if he woke up.
Of course, I was actually comfortable, and I was still tired. Plane rides always bored me, and as long as Hiei remained asleep, I saw no harm in remaining how I was. Besides, if I tried to move, he would probably wake up.
Amazingly enough, I realized that my position felt completely natural. I felt like it was perfectly normal for me to lean my head on his shoulder.
An idea crossed my mind just then, and as Hiei wasn't in a position to protest, I decided that there could be no harm in just snuggling a little closer. He was asleep, and I had a feeling that he would remain asleep for a while.
With a very small smile on my face, I snuggled closer to Hiei, wrapping one of my arms around his and placing my other hand on his chest.
As I relaxed, my mind began to wander to anything and everything. My thoughts mainly revolved around the guy sitting next to me. It was hard not to think about him when he was so close. It felt nice to snuggle with him. He even smelled nice... like wood and trees.
With those thoughts on my mind, I yawned and quickly fell back asleep.
"Hey, Cassie!" a voice whispered in my ear as someone poked me in the side. "Cassie!"
"What?" I groaned quietly, not even opening my eyes. "Kaline, I was sleeping."
"The flight attendant is offering us drinks and snacks. Do you want some?" Kaline asked me softly. She poked me again when I didn't answer immediately. "Well?"
"No. I'm not hungry or thirsty," I replied, moving farther away from Kaline and closer to Hiei. "I just want to sleep."
"Very well then. Good night," Kaline said, humor in her voice. She seemed to be amused at something... probably me. I knew her well enough to figure that out.
"Sure. 'Night." I sighed and went back to sleep, hoping that that would be my last rude awakening.
"Hn. Wake up, stupid ningen," Hiei ordered gruffly. "I'm not your pillow."
I opened my eyes and looked at his face to find him glaring at me. "Oh," I said, sitting up straight. I then took a deep breath. "Hiei, I thought that we established the fact that I am not stupid. I also recall you promising to be more pleasant, don't you?"
"Hn. I never agreed to let you sleep on me," he retorted, turning his head to look out the window.
"And what about you, huh? You were leaning your head on mine," I gently reminded him, knowing that he would just shrug it off.
Hiei turned back around to look at me with his emotionless face. "Hn."
"So you do remember," I said, giving a small, triumphant smile. "I thought so." I waited for him to respond, but he didn't. "Do you know what time it is? I accidentally put my watch in my suitcase."
"Hn. Why would I know?" Hiei replied, crossing his arms. "I have no use for a watch."
I just sighed. So much for his promise. "Thank you anyway," I told him as politely as I could. "I'll just ask Kaline then."
I looked over at Kaline to find her curled up in Kurama's lap, deep in sleep. She looked so content right then. Her head was resting on Kurama's chest, the top of her head right below his chin. His arms were around her, keeping her right where she was. Kaline was happy and peaceful, and the expression on her face was like an angel's. I couldn't wake her up just to find out the time. I was lucky though, because Kurama, however, was awake.
"Kurama, could you please look at Kaline's watch and tell me what time it is?" I asked him kindly.
"Of course," he replied, moving one of his hands. He gently grabbed one of Kaline's hands and turned it until he could see the face of the watch. "It's half past eleven." He put Kaline's hand back on his chest and kissed her on the top of the head.
"Thank you," I said gratefully. "We should be landing in a half hour or so then." I stood up and turned to go down the aisle.
"Where are you going?" Hiei inquired suddenly, his eyes meeting mine.
I frowned a little. His new interest in what I was doing was strange. "It's technically not any of your business," I began, voice soft. "But I'm going to the bathroom. Don't worry. I'll be back sooner than you think."
With that said, I went to the front of the plane and did exactly what I said I was going to do. As I was washing my hands, I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
"Hiei is just plain strange," I said to myself. "First he acts so distant, then he's so rude, then he starts wondering what I'm doing. Does he always have mood swings like that, or was it just a one-time occurrence?" I grabbed a paper towel and proceeded to dry my hands. "I almost preferred him when he acted distant. It's not like he has a right to butt into my business... no matter how cute he is."
I always seemed to come back to that one fact, that one little fact. Unlike Kaline, who often went into denial when it came to admitting things like that, I was always perfectly honest with myself. I had easily admitted that I found Hiei cute, but why did my brain keep reminding me? Usually, once I had acknowledged that someone was cute, the thought never popped up again.
"I shall have to talk to Kaline later. Perhaps she will be able to figure out what is going on." Throwing the paper towel in the trash, I went back to my seat.
When I sat down, Hiei completely ignored me, like he really didn't care what I did at all. Geez, and people said girls suffered from mood swings. Just five minutes ago he had demanded to know what I was doing. Now he was pretending like I didn't exist. How pathetic.
It was a good thing that Kurama had woken Kaline up before I had returned. The girl was talking animatedly her boyfriend, a large smile on her face. Lucky for me, she was talking about what she was planning on doing once she got to Hawaii.
"Don't you think we should go to at least one luau?" I interjected. "I've seen so many on TV, and they look like fun."
"Ohhh.... What a great idea!" Kaline exclaimed, liking the idea immediately. She clapped her hands together and giggled. "Do you think we'd get to wear those skirts and everything?"
I shook my head. "You'd want to walk around with that on in front of everyone?" That sounded embarrassing to me.
"No. Not in front of everyone," Kaline replied, looking at Kurama and making the meaning of her message very clear. The translation: She would gladly give Kurama a private dance.
"I would wear the little grass skirt over my bathing suit," I said, laughing at my friend's silliness. "But that's only if I HAD to dress in that stuff."
"You mean that you wouldn't even do it for Hiei?" Kaline teased me mercilessly. She had a habit of teasing and joking with me.
"No," I replied, breaking out laughing. "I would never EVER do it for anyone... even Hiei."
"But you two looked so sweet all cuddled up and everything." Kaline winked at me, knowing good and well that I wouldn't get angry. Hiei on the other hand...
"Don't make me hurt you," Hiei threatened darkly, glaring at her. He looked less than happy.
Kaline just shrugged off the threat. "You wouldn't hurt me," she told him simply. "And if you ever decided to try, I would just use my wind of the banshee attack and make it so you won't even be able to even sit up for a week."
Obviously her counter-threat meant something to Hiei, because he looked away from her... angry, but subdued. "Hn."
"We will be landing soon," a flight attendant said as she walked down the aisle. "So please fasten your safety belts."
Kaline sighed sadly as the flight attendant walked by. "Must I?" Kaline asked softly so the girl wouldn't hear. "It's not like anything's gonna happen."
"You'd better do as you're suppose to," Kurama said calmly, picking her up off his lap and putting her back in her seat. "And if you don't do it, I'll do it for you."
"Okay," Kaline replied, fastening her seat belt.
A few minutes later, the plane had landed and all of us got off.
