Chapter Eleven: The Beach II

Kaline's POV

I quickly got out of the water, waving for Cassie and the others to join the beach volleyball game without me. As they joined the game, I went to my stuff and applied more sunscreen. The instant I was done, I ran across the beach and jumped into the game, saving the beach ball from hitting the ground.

"Nice save," Keiko commented, keeping her eyes on the ball. With a sudden burst of energy, she jumped up, spiking the ball as it came back over to the girls' side.

Koenma dove down, just barely hitting the ball back up before it touched the ground. Yusuke hit the ball a little higher, and Touya smacked the ball over the net.

Botan, who was in the back, tried to hit the ball to Keiko in the front, although it fell a little short. Yukina bounced the ball off of her forearms, sending it to the edge. I immediately took a step forward, hitting the beach ball over the net.

Jin jumped into the air, driving the ball right back to me. I hit the ball again, and Kurama got it. The ball kept bouncing from side to side, and although the girls and I fought hard, the boys won the game.

"Time for a break," Botan said cheerfully. "I've got sandwiches over by my stuff. How about we eat them now?"

My stomach growled at the mention of food. "Sounds like a good idea to me."

"I'm hungry, too," Cassie stated, placing one hand over her flat belly.

"You had food, and you never told me?" Kuwabara stared at Botan, his mouth hanging open. I was expecting him to start drooling any second.

"What did you think that large cooler held, idiot?" Yusuke retorted, rolling his eyes. "She didn't use it to put her sunscreen in."

"Shut up, Urameshi!" Kuwabara snapped. "I'm not stupid."

"Yeah. Sure. You just keep telling yourself that," Yusuke replied mockingly.

"Hey!" the carrot-top protested, shaking his fist.

Cassie immediately stepped in-between them. "Enough you two. Let's go eat. I'm starving, and I'm sure that Yukina and Keiko are as well." Kuwabara's expression instantly changed to one of joy. Yusuke, however, kept his arrogant look, but he did shut up. Perhaps a reminded of how Keiko could slap him was just what he needed every so often.

"Oh, of course!" Kuwabara exclaimed. "Come on, Yukina. I'll make sure that you get first dibs on the food."

"Thank you, Kazuma," Yukina replied, smiling innocently. "That is so sweet of you." The two of them instantly began to head over to where Botan's things were.

Yusuke gave Keiko a big smile and jerked his head in the direction of the food. "Wanna eat?"

"Yeah," Keiko replied, walking with Yusuke to where Kuwabara and Yukina already were.

"What about me and Kaline?" Botan demanded to know. "Did you forget about us?" Her hands were on her hips, her stance one of annoyance.

"No, of course not," Cassie replied, shaking her head. "But I had a feeling that Yusuke wouldn't have cared too much if either of you were hungry. The mentioning of Keiko however..." She made a gesture as if to say 'well, look'. "It got them to stop fighting."

"C'mon, Touya. We'd better get some food before the biggie gets it all," Jin said. "Lass, you comin' as well?"

"Huh?" Cassie turned to look at the wind demon. "You mean me?" Jin nodded his head. "Ah... I guess so. I am hungry."

Jin grinned. "Then you'd better hurry up." He grabbed Cassie's hand, laughing and pulling her lightly towards the cooler full of food. Touya followed quietly, probably wondering why his friend was acting so silly.

Kurama chuckled, suddenly sweeping me up in his arms. "We'd better head over there too, if we want any food."

"Are you going to carry me?" I inquired flirtatiously, raising an eyebrow.

Kurama nodded his head and began walking over to where the others had gone with me still in his arms. "So do you think they'll leave any food for us?" he asked.

"They'd better," I replied stiffly, absently playing with a lock of Kurama's hair. I suddenly realized something. "Hey, where's Botan and Koenma?"

"Put me down right now, Koenma!" Botan shouted, sounding very displeased.

"What's wrong, Botan?" Koenma inquired, chuckling. "I'm only following Kurama's example."

"This is no way to treat me!" she protested.

"What the?" I wiggled a little until Kurama finally turned around so I could see.

Koenma had Botan flung over one shoulder, a broad smile on his face. He seemed to be very pleased with himself.

Botan, however, was kicking her legs and throwing a huge fit. She obviously did not like the position she was in, and she was making sure that Koenma knew that.

"Listen here, you..." Botan continued to fume until Koenma finally set her down by Keiko.

"Would you like down?" Kurama asked me, a playful gleam in his eyes.

"Um... it really doesn't matter. Just as long as I get some food," I replied.

"Very well." Kurama sat down Indian-style, taking me down to the ground with him. He arranged me in his lap so that I was facing the same direction he was (towards the food), my back pressing against his chest.

Cassie smiled at me, handing me and Kurama both a sandwich. "I made sure that no one ate these. I can't have my best friend going hungry, now can I?"

"No, you can't... especially since I'm your only way home," I stated, beginning to eat my sandwich.

Kurama cleared his throat. "Aren't you forgetting something?"

Realization dawned on me. "Oh, sorry. Kurama could take you home as well, Cassie. At least he should be able to." I thought for a moment. "He did take Hiei to our dimension..."

"It's hard to imagine that I live in another dimension. This place, the world in which demons and humans live, seems so much like home," Cassie commented. "Sometimes, I can't help but think that you were pulling my leg, Kaline."

"But I'm not. I have no reason to," I insisted, keeping my voice as sincere as possible.

"I know. I just have to look at Jin and the horn on his head to know that," Cassie responded. "Plus, how many guys do you see with gravity- defying hair like Hiei's and Kurama's?"

"Hmmm... good question," I replied, giggling.

"I wonder if Hiei's hair lays flat when it gets wet..." Cassie turned to look at Hiei, who was still sitting far off, wearing swimtrunks and eating a sandwich. "When did he get the food?"

"Right before I picked up Kaline," Kurama answered, going back to eating his lunch.

"Hey, Kaline! Kurama! Either of you two want these last two sandwiches?" Kuwabara asked in his rough voice.

"Kuwabara, you jerk!" Yusuke exclaimed. "I wanted those."

"Oh... shut up, Yusuke," Botan ordered sharply. "You've already had three sandwiches. You don't need anymore."

"And like Kuwabara does?" Yusuke retorted, pouting a little.

"Do you think Urameshi and the biggie are going to fight, Touya?" Jin wondered, looking over at the ice master.

"I do not think so. The girls are too near," Touya replied calmly.

"Not to mention that there are other people on the beach," I added.

Keiko glared daggers at the raven-haired spirit detective. "Yusuke, that's enough. There's no way you could be hungry after all that food."

"But?!" Yusuke protested, giving Keiko a puppy-dog look.

"That's not going to work, Yusuke." Keiko turned away, taking a bite out of her sandwich.

"You tell 'em, girl!" Botan said enthusiastically, lightly punching Keiko in the arm.

As Kuwabara and Yusuke continued to bicker, Keiko and Botan tried to get them to shut up. Jin and Touya exchanged guesses for how the little battle was going to turn out, while everyone else, including me, just sat there and enjoyed our entertainment. Eventually, I got bored, although I was not the first to speak up.

"It's getting hot," Yukina commented, shading her eyes.

"Let's get back in the water then," Cassie replied, turning her head to look at the pretty blue ocean.

"I'm in," I stated, immediately liking the idea. "Watching the guys fight has gotten really old."

"We could always get in the shade and find something else to do," Kurama whispered gently in my ear, obviously flirting with me.

"Kurama!" I exclaimed, pretending to be shocked. "I can not believe that you would suggest such a thing."

"Are you two coming?" Cassie shouted suddenly, surprising Kurama and me. She had somehow gotten up and was halfway to the water's edge with Jin, Touya, Koenma, and Yukina right beside her.

I got up off of Kurama's lap. "I'm coming. I'm coming. Hold your horses." I ran and caught up with Cassie and the others. Kurama was right behind me, his hand in mine.

We all swam for a long while, although Kuwabara, Yusuke, Keiko, and Botan did eventually give up the battle and get into the water. Of course, the guys had to start a dunking contest, in which the girls lost, and by suppertime, we were all exhausted and happy.

"Yeah, I want six pizzas: two pepperonis, one sausage, one Hawaiian, and two supreme," Yusuke ordered over the phone. Everyone had decided on pizza, as no one was willing to go out to eat.

"Um... Kurama," I began, looking at the red head's back. "You got royally burnt."

"I did, didn't I?" Kurama responded, looking at his shoulders and arms. "I hadn't noticed it until now."

"He's not the only one," Botan stated, pointing at Koenma, Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Cassie.

"I'm burnt?" Cassie inquired, surprised. "I put on sunscreen."

"Yeah, only once," I informed her. "You never reapplied it. Fortunately, it's not all that bad. I think you just got your back and shoulders." Since everyone was still in his or her swimming attire for some reason or another (probably laziness), all the red skin was quite noticeable.

"All I got to say is, Hiei better not yell at me if he doesn't get the pizza he wants," Yusuke stated as he hung up the phone, totally oblivious to the conversation that had been going on. "It's his own fault for disappearing as soon as we got back."

"The shrimp will just have to deal," Kuwabara replied. "I'm more worried about this stupid sunburn."

"At least your skin matches your hair now. Maybe if we got you some red clothes, you could pose as a lobster," Yusuke joked. "You already have the intelligence level of one."

"Enough!" I shouted, glaring at the two boys and hoping that they wouldn't start fighting. "If you don't be nice, I won't give you a bottle of aloe to use."

"You brought aloe?" Keiko inquired, amazed. "Wish I had thought to bring that."

"Yeah. Now, all of you sit tight while I get the stuff," I ordered, going to my room and coming back with five large bottles of aloe. Setting them all down on the coffee table, I gestured for anyone to take a bottle. "They're fair game, people." I, of course, grabbed a bottle so I could get Kurama's back.

Keiko, Yukina, Botan, and Cassie grabbed the others. Keiko got Yusuke's back, which he didn't protest to. Yusuke didn't even make some childish, perverted remark either. Yukina rubbed aloe into Kuwabara's sunburn, and lucky for the boy there was no Hiei around to protest. Botan just chuckled and got Koenma's back after she made him promise to never sling her over his shoulder again.

Keiko, Yukina, Botan and I chatted while the guy accepted their 'punishment', as Yusuke put it. It was plenty of fun, and even Jin and Touya laughed at the poor guys whenever they jerked because of the cold aloe.

For a brief moment, I wondered where Cassie had gotten off to, but I soon shrugged the thought off. She had just probably gone to her room or something. I was positive that she was just fine. What else could she be?
