Chapter 12: Sunburns

Cassie's POV

I walked down the bedroom-lined hallway to the door at the end of the hall. I knew what the door led to. a sunroom and peace and quiet. At that moment, I didn't really want to sit in the living room and deal with all the noise and chatter. After all that time on the beach, I just wanted to relax and think. Well, at least until the pizzas came. Talking to Kaline was fun and her friends were starting to grow on me, but I just needed to be away from all the noise.

I opened the door to the sunroom, and the sun instantly greeted with its intense light. I squinted my eyes and looked around the room. The walls were glass, and there were chairs and a table in the corner, but the rest of the ornate brick floor was clear. except for a shape on the ground.

Hiei was sitting in the middle of the floor, still in only his swimming trunks. He was being eerily silent, and he hadn't even glanced my way when I had walked in. Either he had fallen asleep while sitting up, or he was ignoring everything around him.

"Hiei?" I walked up behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder. I wanted to know if he was asleep or not.

He jerked away from my touch, a very soft, low noise coming from him. I stood there a moment and stared at him, wondering what had caused him to react like that. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light, I realized what I had done. I had touched Hiei's very, very red back.

"You're sunburned!" I exclaimed, a little surprised. "You look even redder than Kurama."

I sat down behind him and poured some aloe on my fingers. Unfortunately, the instant I touched the aloe to his back, he jerked away again. I tried to put the stuff on his back a second time, but I still failed.

"Hiei, you need to have some aloe put over that sunburn. It'll help ease the pain and speed up the healing process. I'm trying to be gentle, so please hold still." A third time Hiei jerked away, so I decided to change tactics. "What's wrong? Does it really hurt that bad?" I felt that if I involved his pride, he would hold still.

"No," Hiei replied simply, not even turning around to look at me.

"Well, you need to get some aloe on your burn, and to do that, you need to stop moving so. why don't you just lay down on your stomach?" I suggested. If Hiei laid down, then he wouldn't be able to move as much. When he didn't move, I frowned slightly. "Please, Hiei? You might as well get it done and over with."

With a small sigh, Hiei gave in and laid down. He rested his head on his arms, his eyes quickly closing.

Settling down at his side, I tipped the bottle upside down and poured a large amount of aloe on his back. With gentle fingers, I smoothed the substance slowly across his shoulders and neck. As I continued to lightly rub the aloe into his red skin, he stayed perfectly still. After a while, I tried reaching across h is back to get his sides, and I almost fell on top of him. I had a small problem.

I came up with an idea after a moment, and since Hiei could only yell at me, I decided to go for it. Slinging one leg over him, I sat down on his lower back that was covered by his swimming trunks. I felt Hiei tense up for a moment, but he didn't say a word. Since he didn't complain, I dumped some more aloe on his back and continued to rub. His skin had stopped absorbing the aloe as rapidly as before, so I was almost done.

I probably could have stopped right then and got off of Hiei, but I didn't. I enjoyed the feel of his smooth skin and muscles under my fingertips. What was even better was that Hiei wasn't complaining. He actually seemed to be enjoying it. There was even a small smile on his face. I had to admit that Hiei looked sweet when he was smiling happily.

For about five more minutes, Hiei let me massage the aloe into his back. After the five minutes though, he gave a small groan and moved slightly. "Get off me, ningen," Hiei ordered gruffly, his smile disappearing.

I obeyed, handing him the aloe bottle as he sat up. Seeing his lost look, I explained. "You got burned, so I put aloe on your back. I got burned as well, so it's your turn to put aloe on my back." He frowned and looked like he was about to refuse. "Please, Hiei? I'm not flexible enough to apply it to my own back."

Hiei gave his familiar "Hn". He said nothing more though. I waited for a few more moments. "Very well. Turn around, Cassie."

"Thank you," I replied, giving him a bright smile and doing as he asked. Soon, I felt aloe being spread gently on my back. It seemed that Hiei was actually being careful. He didn't want to hurt me, obviously and thankfully. He wasn't near as bad and gruff as he wanted people to think. The guy probably just thought that he had to act macho because he was a male. and a demon.

"PIZZA'S HERE!!" someone, probably Kuwabara, yelled loudly.

I moved to get up, but Hiei lightly pressed down on my shoulder. "I'm not done yet. Be patient," Hiei told me in a quiet voice.

Surprised, I settled back down until Hiei deemed me ready to leave. I waited patiently, as he had requested, with my eyes closed. I was pretty sure that he had already fully covered my sunburn, but I wasn't going to argue. Hiei wasn't bad at the aloe massage. quite the opposite actually, and having my back rubbed was quite pleasant. My stomach could wait ten minutes.

Unfortunately, Kaline couldn't. She barged into the room right then, giving a tiny gasp of surprise.

"What the?" she said as I turned to look at her.

"Um." I drifted off, not really sure what to say.

Hiei, on the other hand, stood up and left. He didn't say anything to Kaline or me; he just went out the door.

"That was. unusual," Kaline commented, a strange look on her face. She shook her head then, as if to clear her thoughts. "Ready for supper now, Cassie?"

I was amazed that she wasn't going to ask any questions, but I didn't want her to. I wasn't in the mood to answer questions, and I really don't know if I could answer any questions she would ask. "Yeah. I'm starving," I replied, giving her a smile. Without a second thought, I got up and followed her out of the room.
