Chapter Thirteen: Movies

Kaline's POV

It was after supper, and I was lounging on the couch, staring at the ceiling and thinking. Something strange had happened not all that long ago, and I was a little confused. About half an hour ago, I had found Cassie and Hiei in a room... together... not fighting. Hiei had been gently rubbing aloe into Cassie's back. Of course, the instant he had realized that I was in the room, he had left. Cassie had merely looked slightly surprised.

Above all, Hiei's... unusual actions bothered me. He just wasn't a gentle person. He never acted nice, at least not to humans. Hiei had said multiple times that he hated humans. He certainly insulted them enough.

"What are you thinking about?" someone asked, jarring me out of my thoughts. The voice was male, warm, and familiar.

"Hmmm..." I turned my gaze from the ceiling to the side. Kurama stood there, looking down at me, his green eyes sparkling. "Oh... nothing much. I wasn't thinking about anything TOO important. I just found Hiei giving Cassie an aloe back-massage today before supper." My tone was playful and very sarcastic.

Kurama stared at me for a moment, unsure of whether I was joking or being serious. "Ah..." His eyes flickered with uncertainty.

"Strangely enough, I'm telling the truth. Ask Cassie. I wouldn't recommend asking Hiei. He'll just deny it," I told him with a small chuckle. I had to admit that it would be amusing to see the reaction on Hiei's face if the aloe massage was brought up in a conversation.

"I believe you," Kurama replied, looking thoughtful. "Perhaps I should have a talk with Hiei."

"Why?" I inquired, very curious. What would Kurama need to talk to Hiei about? I couldn't think of anything.

"I just have a few things to ask him. He is acting a little unusual, after all," he answered simply. "But that can wait till later."

"Huh?" I gave him a curious look. Why would the conversation have to wait?

Kurama just smiled and moved me so that he could sit down. With gentle hands, he rearranged me on the couch so that my head was resting on his chest and one of my arms was curled around his stomach. His arms went around my shoulders, and his chin rested on the top of my head.

"Geez! Can you two get any more mushy?" Yusuke protested as he walked into the living room.

"What's wrong, Yusuke?" I teased, smirking. "Is something bothering you?"

He rolled his eyes in reply. “I just want to watch a movie in peace. A James Bond movie is on tonight, and I'm not gonna let you two make-out while I watch it."

"Kurama, would we make-out while Yusuke watched a movie?" I asked the red- head sweetly, my smile getting bigger.

"Hmmm... I don't know," Kurama responded, a devious glint in his eyes. He kissed me lightly on the top of my head. "I think so, but I'm not one- hundred percent sure."

Yusuke sighed in disgust. "The instant you two start kissing, I'll kick you both out of this room."

"Oh... you will, huh?" I snuggled up closer to Kurama and summoned up my power. Within moments, I was in my demon form. Black hair flowed down my shoulders, resting elegantly around me. Bright blue eyes shone with humor as I looked up at the spirit detective. "And how are you going to do that?" I was strong... very strong in my demon form.

"I'll find a way," Yusuke promised, glaring at me.

"Let's try to be good," Kurama suggested, rubbing my ears gently.

I instantly began to purr. All thoughts about possibly fighting the boy faded away. "Yusuke, you should probably go see if anyone else wishes to watch the movie too." My eyes wandered to the TV screen, the only TV screen in the entire house. At least the screen was rather large. The size made up for the limited number.

"Hey, good idea." Yusuke rushed off, probably to look for Keiko and the others.

A few minutes later, everyone was in the living room. Cassie was sitting in one of the other couches, which she was sharing with Jin. Koenma and Botan had the other couch. Yukina had a chair, and Kuwabara sat on the floor right next to her. Keiko and Yusuke were sitting in the middle of the living room on the floor, the remote between the two of them. Seated on the floor near Jin was Touya, and by Cassie was Hiei (who was on the floor as well). Both looked calm... as well as bored stiff.

"Time for James Bond," Yusuke stated, turning on the television and changing it to channel thirteen.

"Why James Bond? Titanic is on tonight," Keiko said, looking over at Yusuke, a pleading look in her eyes. She obviously wasn't one for action movies.

"You've got to be joking!" Yusuke exclaimed, mouth hanging open. "There's no way I'm going to watch THAT movie!"

"We're men, and men do not watch sissy movies," Kuwabara added, puffing out his chest a bit.

"Why don't we just take a vote or something?" Cassie suggested diplomatically, shifting her position to a move comfortable one.

"Excellent idea, Cassie!" Botan said enthusiastically, clapping her hands gleefully.

"We're watching James Bond!" Yusuke insisted, being his normal rude, stubborn self. There were times when he just wasn't going to compromise unless he was forced. This was definitely one of those times.

"Yusuke!" Botan shouted, astonished by his insensitivity. Taking out her oar, she smacked him hard across the head. The oar made a nice, resounding noise, but it also broke in half in the process. "Darn it!"

"I think that voting sounds perfect," I agreed, smiling at Botan, still purring softly. Kurama had yet to stop rubbing my ears, and it didn't look like he was going to stop any time soon. "I'm all for James Bond."

"Ditto," Cassie added with a smile. "Titanic is too romantic for my tastes at the moment." She paused for a brief second. "Hiei, what do you want to watch?"

"Hn. I really don't care," he replied, shrugging his shoulders. "I'm just here because I have nothing else to do." His gaze wandered to where Kuwabara and Yukina were, eyes flashing in anger. It wasn't hard to figure out that he was there to keep an eye on his sister.

"I don't think Hiei even knows who James Bond is." I laughed, smirking. The fire demon's extreme ignorance of human things amused me.

"And?" Hiei retorted in his defense. "Why would I want to know who this... 'Sanges Sound' character is?"

"Ummm... It's James Bond," Yusuke corrected him, not noticing that the fire demon appeared to be very volatile at the moment.

"Do I look like I care, detective?" Hiei glared at Yusuke.

"Relax, Hiei," Kurama said gently. "I'm sure that no one's trying to insult you for not knowing."

"Alright... back to voting," Cassie began, cutting of Hiei's growl rather effectively. "All for James Bond, raise your hand." Yusuke's, Kuwabara's, Kurama's, Cassie's, Koenma's and my hands went up. "All for Titanic?" Keiko, Yukina, and Botan raised their hands. "Alrighty... who really doesn't care?" The last three (Hiei, Jin, and Touya) didn't respond at all.

"James Bond it is then," Yusuke stated happily, turning up the volume on the television right as the movie started.

During the movie, Touya got up and left, finding the movie much more boring than he had expected. He went outside after saying something about practicing.

Koenma and Botan left about five minutes after that, going into the kitchen for food. They didn't come back out, but a lot of laughter and clattering of dishes was heard coming from where they were.

Hiei suffered through the entire thing, eyes almost constantly on Yukina and the carrot-top. He also seemed to keep sneaking glances back at Cassie and Jin, his eyes flashing dangerously. Perhaps he was angry because Cassie and Jin kept exchanging whispered comments about the movie. Hiei liked his silence, and preferred that humans kept quite. There was another possibility, but it was so unlikely that I didn't dwell on the thought longer than a very brief moment.

Even though I normally enjoyed movies, I had trouble paying attention. Kurama kept rubbing my ears -a very pleasant experience- so I kept on purring. It is very hard to watch anything with your eyes half-closed in pleasure.

When the movie was finally over, everyone filed out of the living room. Just Kurama and myself remained.

"Man, it's nine already," I commented when I glanced at my watch.

"Shower and then bed?" Kurama asked, taking his hands away my ears. He knew my schedule so well, most likely from the month he spent living with me on that yacht.

"Definitely. I want to get the salt water out of my hair."

With that said, he stood up, sweeping me up into his arms, and carried me to our room.
