Chapter Fourteen: Discussion

Cassie's POV

The past few hours had been so unusual. Hiei had actually been nice to me... had willingly rubbed aloe into my back. Also, during the movie, he had glanced at me many times. The attention had been nice, but confusing as well.

I plopped down on my bed, using a towel to wring the water out of my hair. I had just gotten out of the shower, and Yukina was in there at the moment.

"Hey, Cassie!" someone shouted from outside my room. The person was female, and she sounded very familiar.

"C'mon in, Kaline," I called back, smiling brightly. I was almost always happy to see my best friend.

Kaline opened the door, revealing her pj-clad body and damp hair. "How's the sunburn?"

I shrugged. "Okay I guess."

"So how was the back massage that Hiei gave you?" Kaline asked, curious, a devious twinkle in her eyes.

"He only rubbed aloe into my back. I did the same for him," I replied simply. "It wasn't that big of a deal."

"You touched Hiei, and he didn't kill you?!" she demanded to know, eyes wide.

"Ahhh... yeah. Why would he?" I responded. I remembered her warning me about Hiei a while back, but Hiei really hadn't acted that bad. He didn't talk much, but I really didn't mind that.

"He doesn't like people, humans especially," she told me, sighing "I've never seen Hiei do anything like that. It was rather disturbing."

"From what you've told me, it does seem a little out of character," I commented, chuckling. It was rather funny, knowing that Hiei wasn't as bad as he wanted people to think. Hiei had a heart; he just had to have one. He couldn't care so much about his sister if he didn't.

"His attitude... is a little distressing." She paused. "So what happened exactly?"

"Well... I went into the sun room to get some peace and quiet. Hiei was in there, very sunburned. I decided to take pity on him. I rubbed the aloe into his back. He did the same for me." I wasn't about to tell her that I had massaged him while sitting on his lower back. That was something better kept to myself.

"Just be careful around Hiei, okay?" Kaline ran a nervous hand through her golden brown hair.

"Alright. I will," I promised, my tone sincere. Kaline was worried for a reason... probably a good one.

She smiled in relief. "Now, just one more question before I let you be."

"Okay," I replied. "Shoot."

"What do you think of Jin?" she asked. "I think he likes you."

I thought for a moment on that. "Well, he is pretty nice, and his accent is kinda cool, even though it makes him hard to understand at times." I shrugged. "At this moment, I think of him as a friend."

Kaline sighed. "Maybe that's best. You are human, and if you get too attached to any of the demons, you might just end up with a broken heart. Jin and Touya live in Makai, but they all live in a different dimension from the both of us."

"Couldn't you take me to visit them?" I inquired, already knowing the answer.

"Well, yes, I could," she answered. "But that's not the main problem."

When she didn't elaborate, I frowned. "Aren't you going to tell me what this problem is?"

"Actually, there's two problems. The first is that demons live longer than humans. The second problem is that hanging around demons is dangerous." She gave me a weak half smile. "I should know. My friends get into more dangerous situations than you could ever imagine. If you accidentally got caught up in one of them..." She drifted off, leaving me to fill in the blanks.

"Yea. Don't I feel better now," I commented sarcastically.

"Sorry," Kaline apologized immediately, sounding honest. "But that's the truth."

Right then, Yukina emerged from the bathroom, dressed in her pajamas. "Oh, hello, Kaline," she said brightly. "How are you doing?"

"Fine," she replied, obviously happy about the change in subject and mood. It was hard to act depressed around someone as cheery as Yukina.

"Did you enjoy your shower?" I inquired, trying to help make polite conversation. I didn't know Yukina well enough to talk to her like I did Kaline.

"Yes, until the water turned cold. But I really didn't mind that," she answered.

"Blame Kurama," Kaline exclaimed, laughing. "He's in the shower as we speak. He's the one who probably stole all the hot water."

I chuckled. "Are you sure about that? I'd think that after the movie he would need to take a cold shower," I teased my friend.

Kaline blushed slightly. "Um..."

"Yes," Yukina agreed. "He probably did get hot laying on the couch with Kaline."

'She's naive. There is no doubt about it,' I thought. "Yeah, hot for Kaline," I said softly, giving Kaline a devious look.

"Cassie!" she shouted, shoving me off the bed.

I hit the floor laughing, feeling that the look on her face had been worth the violent reaction. "What?" I wanted to know, still giggling. "Don't hate me for telling the truth."

"Ack! Go wash your mind out with soap. I'm going to bed," she growled at me, sounding a little frustrated. I wasn't worried though. She'd be back to normal by morning. Kaline never stayed angry at me for very long.

"Bye. Good night!" I said as she walked out of my room.

"Is Kaline okay?" Yukina asked innocently. "She didn't sound very happy when she left."

I chuckled, shaking my head. "No, she's fine. Trust me on this one. By morning, she'll be back to her normal self."

"Okay," she replied, yawning. "I'm going to bed now. I'll see you in the morning, Cassie."

"Sure. Good night." I turned out the light, and the both of us went to sleep.
