Chapter Twenty-Six: The Luau
Kaline's POV
"I need a what?!" I looked at Cassie, feeling surprised, but I quickly calmed down. "Are you sure that I'll need a bikini?"
Cassie nodded. "Yeah. Don't you think that you'll strange wearing a one- piece with a grass skirt?"
I thought on that for a moment, my mind easily conjuring up a mental picture. Making a face, I sat down in a chair. Cassie and I were in the sun room. Everyone else was wandering around doing who-knows-what.
"Alright, alright. I'll wear a bikini." I grimaced. I had become accustomed to wearing my one piece. The stupid two piece would probably feel uncomfortable for a while.
"I would recommend a sapphire blue," Cassie suggested. "That is, if you have that color."
Shaking my head, I stretched out a little on the chair. "I didn't pack one at all." I sighed. "I never thought that I would actually need one."
"I brought an extra one. Do you want to borrow it?" she asked me.
I raised an eyebrow at Cassie, an action I had learned from her. "And you believe it would fit me, why?"
Cassie looked slightly embarrassed. She had somehow overlooked the fact that I didn't have the same figure as her. She was quite a bit more curvy. "Right. I forgot."
I frowned. "Are you okay? You usually don't forget things like this?"
She waved off my concern. "I'm fine. My mind's just on something else."
A smile crept onto my face. "Are you sure that it's not SOMEONE instead of SOMETHING?"
Cassie gave me a devious look. "You've been taking lessons from me haven't you? You're not as naive as you used to be."
I returned the evil look. "So what if I have been? It's not like I've changed all that much. I've only learned that it's not good to be naive around you. You get into too much trouble."
"I what?" she inquired, looking as innocent as a child. "I do not get into trouble."
Snorting as lady-like as possible, I shook my head. "Yes, you do. You get hit by tree branches because you're not paying attention, you torture Hiei... yeah, you most definitely get in trouble." I paused. "Are you going to keep denying it?"
She laughed. "I think life was easier when you acted naive."
"Don't worry. As soon as this vacation is over, I am so going back to my old self," I told her. "Once you stop getting in trouble, I can return to normal. It's hard, thinking the way you do. I've gotten a headache once or twice from it."
"Poor baby." Cassie made sympathetic noises then laughed.
I rolled my eyes at her. "You are impossible." Fingering my diamond flower necklace, I decided to change the subject. "So, as for the bikini... do you think that a light blue might be better than sapphire? I can create the swimsuit any color I want."
My friend sighed when she noticed how my mind had switched topics once again. "As long as it's a pretty blue, I don't think that it'll matter." She paused for a moment, obviously thinking about something. "Well, you could do silvery blue. That would be really beautiful."
I considered that for a moment, quickly finding the idea appealing. "Alright... shall I get started now?"
She looked at me, amazed. "Started at what?"
"Making the bikini, of course," I replied, giggling. "How could you forget so quickly? Your mind must really be fixated on Hiei."
Cassie sighed. "Just get to work."
Chuckling, I did as I was told.
As the sun set, I found myself in a tiny silver-blue bikini that Cassie had assured me was perfect for my body shape. Yeah right. There wasn't enough material there to accent anything, let alone my body. I was going to make a complete fool of myself.
At least the swimsuit was comfortable. That was my only consolation. 'Ah... the advantages of making clothing with magic,' I thought happily.
The instant I saw Kurama's expression when he looked at me, I swore to apologize to Cassie for doubting her. She had obviously been right, because the red-head was staring at me with a look of complete awe on his face. His expression alone was enough to make me consider wearing the skimpy swimsuit more often.
"Wow," he said, his green eyes bright.
Blushing, I spun around so he could get the full picture. "You like?" I asked.
"Uh-huh." Kurama sounded rather dumbfounded.
"Where did you get that, Kaline?" Yusuke asked, pointing to my clothing, a look of appreciation on his face.
"Yusuke!" Kieko growled, smacking the boy while Kurama hit him on the head.
"HEY! What did I do to deserve that?" Yusuke wanted to know, rubbing his cheek and head. Koenma sadly shook his head in response to that.
"Keep your comments about Kaline to yourself," Kurama ordered darkly, narrowing his eyes dangerously at the boy.
"Looks like Urameshi is getting beat," Jin commented to Touya, who just nodded in reply.
I giggled, linking my arm with Kurama's. "C'mon. Let's get goin'."
"Wait a minute," Cassie said, making me halt. "Hiei's not here yet."
I mentally sighed. "Well, go get him then," I told her, gesturing towards a tree outside. "He's probably still out there."
With a nod of her head, she slipped outside. Somehow, she quickly returned with a grumbling Hiei. I made a mental note to ask her later how she could so easily control the fire demon.
"Are we going to leave now?" Yukina asked sweetly.
"Since we're all here, I would assume so," Botan replied, then she glanced over at Yusuke. "Unless a certain someone decides to make some more comments?"
"Will you people stop beating me up for that?" he demanded to know, glaring at everyone.
"Ummm... no," Koenma told him.
"Argh! Shut up, pacifier-breath!"
I laughed, not at all surprised by what was going on. Koenma just loved tormenting Yusuke.
"We're gonna miss the luau if we don't leave soon."
Everyone was too busy listening to Yusuke and Koenma's verbal fight to pay any attention to me.
Turning to Botan, I gave her a pleading look. "May I please borrow your oar?"
"Ah... sure, Kaline," she replied, sounding confused. Then, she pulled the oar out of thin air and handed it to me. "Here you go."
"Thank-you," I responded politely, then I turned back to the two fighting males. "Shut up, both of ya!!!" I swung the oar twice: once at Koenma and once at Yusuke. Afterwards, they were holding their heads, an expression of pain on both of their faces.
Botan accepted the oar back and just as quickly made it disappear. "Well, that did work," she commented blandly, a small smile on her face.
"Yep. It sure did." I smiled, feeling much better. "Now, let's get going."
"Let's see here... there's food over there, a story-teller over there, dancing over there." I turned this way and that, trying to get a quick look at anything and everything at the luau, my grass skirt swirling about me as I moved. "What do you wanna do first, Kurama?"
He laughed at my enthusiasm, putting his arms around me and drawing me close. "I do believe that you owe me a dance."
My eyes widened, and I blushed. "You still remember that?" I wondered, surprised. I hadn't expected his mind to retain that bit of information.
Kurama smirked. "Of course, I do. That isn't something I'm going to just forget." He leaned down so that his mouth was right by my ear. "Besides," he whispered. "I've been looking forward to it."
My blush deepened. "Okay then. Let's go over to where the dancing is." Giving him a flirtatious smile, I let him lead me to our destination.
The dancing area was centered around a fire which burned low and dull. In a circle around the fire were the hula dancers. On the outside were all the men, sitting on logs placed in a ring around everything.
Kurama sat down on a vacant log and looked at me expectantly. He was waiting for his dance to start, his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands.
I nodded my head at him, studying the others dancers before attempting to try it myself. At first, my self-consciousness made my movements jerky, but one look at Kurama warmed me from the inside out. Love was shining in his eyes, and I soon forgot about everything else but him, me, and the music.
Letting my magic guide me, I continued to dance, my movements graceful. My skirt and hair swung back and forth as I danced, and my eyes never left Kurama's.
When the music ended, Kurama stood up, took my hand, and pulled me off to the side. Once away from the fire, the darkness slightly hid us from view.
"So Kurama, why'd you take us away from everyone else?" I inquired, very curious.
"I have something to ask you," he replied, sticking both of his hands in his pant-pockets.
"Oh? What? You have my full attention," I told him, moving so that I could snuggle up against him. One arm curled around his waist while my other hand rested on his chest beside my head. The rapid, steady beating of his heart sounded in my ear, telling me that he was nervous about something. Usually, his heartbeat was a slow, soothing thump.
"I wanted to know if... if you..." He paused and took a deep breath, pulling one of his fisted hands out of his pocket. "Kaline, will you marry me?" He opened his hand to reveal a small, dainty, silver ring embedded with diamonds.
I stared at the ring for a split second before smiling brightly. "I love you, so of course, I will, Kurama!" Then, I stood on tiptoe to place a lingering kiss on his lips.
Kurama broke away from the kiss long enough to slip the ring on my finger. With my arms around his neck and his arms around my waist, we resumed kissing. He held me impossibly close, the warmth from his body easily fighting off the chilly night air.
When the kitsune gently touched my lips with his tongue, I opened my mouth, allowing him entrance. He took advantage of the invitation, his hot tongue prodding mine, moving it around as he pleased. Soon, he was exploring every inch of my mouth, neglecting not a single part.
As we kissed, I felt little bolts of heat shoot though me, and my knees began to get weak. The feeling of his lips against mine was as magical as always, and his tongue flickering around inside my mouth caused fire to shoot through my veins.
We finally broke apart when the hula music restarted. I blushed automatically, feeling happier than I ever had before. Kurama smiled though, a devious smile that had me yearning for another kiss.
"Shall we go back to the dancing area?" I asked him, smiling.
"If that is what you want," he replied, giving me one last kiss. "Let's go." With a possessive arm around my waist, he walked with me back to the fire.
The place was almost the same as before, but there were two differences. The first was Cassie, watching the dancing so she could copy the moves later. The second was Hiei who was farther back, hidden in the shadows, his eyes on Cassie.
I whispered something in Kurama's ear, earning a grin from him.
"Good idea," he commented, nodding his head in agreement. "Now, why don't you put your little plan into action?" He turned me so I was facing Cassie and gave me a small push in the right direction, his hands placed lower than usual.
"Kurama!" I exclaimed, surprised. He had never touched me there before.
"What's wrong, love?" Kurama asked, not even bothering to try and look innocent.
"Never mind," I replied, then muttered "Hentai," under my breath, walking off to talk to Cassie. She, at least, wouldn't touch my butt.
"Hey, Kaline," she greeted me, sparing me a quick glance before she returned to her studying. "Having fun?"
"Yep," I responded, smiling as I fingered my new ring. "Lots of fun, but I don't think that Hiei is as well." I gestured in the direction of the fire demon. "Why don't you talk to him or something... maybe even give him his private dance?"
Cassie turned and glared at me. Her expression softened, though, when she looked at Hiei. "I'll talk to him for a while and get him to socialize for a bit," she said, beginning to leave. She paused just long enough to point at my ring. "And when I get back, you get to tell me about that."
I laughed, smiling even brighter. "Sure thing, Cassie. I'll be more than happy to." I shooed her away. "Now, go on and spend some time with your little boy-toy."
It was Cassie's turn to laugh. "Alright, but in exchange, you'd better remember to give Kurama his private dance as well." Then, with that said, she walked off in the direction of Hiei.
'Have fun,' I thought as I walked back towards Kurama. 'I know that I will.'
The kitsune gave me a quick kiss as soon as I returned. "I take it that you succeeded?" he wondered, looking over at the human girl and fire demon.
"Yeah. It wasn't all that hard, actually," I admitted, quickly hugging him before making him sit down on a log. "All I have to do is give you your dance... again."
Kurama looked up at me with interest. "Oh, you do, huh?"
I gave him a very seductive smile. "Uh-huh," I answered, nodding my head.
"Well, then, shouldn't you start dancing before the music stops?" he asked, smirking.
Scowling playfully, I lightly bopped him on the head. "I'm getting there." Then, smiling, I once again let the music carry me away. I danced for Kurama, my eyes on him, my magic guiding me.
After ten minutes or so, I glanced away from Kurama to where Cassie and Hiei had once been. They weren't there, and I couldn't find them anywhere nearby. That was rather strange, but I didn't let it bother me.
Mentally shrugging, I continued to dance. 'She's with Hiei. What bad things can happen to her as long as he's around?'
Of course, my mind blissfully went blank when the music stopped and Kurama pulled me into his lap for a heated kiss. The last thought on my mind was that I hoped Cassie was having as much fun as I was.
