Chapter Twenty-Seven: Pain

Kaline's POV

I awoke early in the morning, incredibly warm and comfortable. The room was rather dark, so I had to wait a little for my eyes to adjust to the lack of light. When I could finally see better, I noticed familiar arms wrapped around my waist along with red hair spilling over my shoulder.

'What the...? How did I end up here? The last thing I remember is the luau.' I puzzled over that for a few moments, blushing from embarrassment when my memory came rushing back. 'I can't believe I did that... I really shouldn't have done that.'

Falling asleep at the luau had not been a good idea. In fact, it had been down right stupid. Thankfully, someone (probably Kurama) had carried me back to the beach house. I made a mental note to thank the kitsune later.

Yawning, I removed Kurama's arms from around my waist and scrambled out of bed. It was then that I noticed that I was wearing a t-shirt over my swimsuit. The red-head had probably done that as well.

I smiled at my fiancé, reaching out and running my fingers through his hair. I reveled in the softness as I heard the fox demon sigh softly.

"Damn you're fine," I muttered before gathering up a change of clothes and going into the bathroom. I took a quick shower; and then I went back into the bedroom, dressed in a short jean skort and a simple blue t-shirt. One of my fluffy towels was wrapped tightly around my hair, hopefully soaking up most of the water.

When I came out of the bathroom, I found Kurama awake but still in bed. His eyes were half-closed, and he gave a yawn to quickly tell me that he was half-asleep as well.

"Good morning, sleepy head," I greeted him softly and sweetly, sitting down on the bed so I was close enough to stroke his cheek. "Did you not get enough rest last night?"

He shook his head as he brought up his hand to cover mine. "You kept me awake," he answered, sitting up and pulling me closer to him. The action made my towel fall to the bed. "You decided to move around a little too much last night." He nuzzled my neck and whispered a more detailed explanation in my ear, causing me to go bright red.

"Kurama!" I exclaimed in shock, astounded that he could even say something like that. My cheeks felt like they were on fire because I was blushing so hard.

"Is something wrong?" he asked innocently, but his devious smile gave away his present state of mind.

My mouth fell open at that. I was so surprised by how he was acting. 'Well,' I silently mused. 'Two can play at that game.'

With a seductive smile on my face, I moved and sat down on Kurama's lap so that I was straddling and facing him. "There's absolutely nothing wrong," I purred in response, leaning forward so that my mouth was just a hair's width away from his. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I snuggled even closer, enjoying the reaction I received from him. He was enjoying himself.

Kurama was surprised for a moment; but he quickly adjusted, his smile growing even bigger. "Good," he commented, crashing his lips down on mine a moment later. His hands rubbed circles on my back, encouraging me to relax.

I did more than just relax; I practically melted into him. Moaning softly into the kiss, I massaged the base of his skull with my fingertips. The kiss was warm, passionate, relaxing, and exciting... all at the same time. How Kurama was capable of doing that, I do not know; but I did not care either. All that mattered was that he was doing it.

By the time the kiss ended, I was almost completely limp. "Mmmm..." was all I could say as I continued to relax in Kurama's arms, my head nuzzled into the crook of his neck. A strange warmth and an even stranger ache flooded my entire body, making it almost impossible for my brain to function.

"Kurama, can we stay here all day?" I asked before I even realized that my vocal cords were still working.

He chuckled. "We probably could. It is raining, after all." Kurama pointed at the window.

I looked at what he was pointing at and sighed. The sky was dark with rain clouds, and raindrops were hitting the window. I just could not hear anything due to my magical sound-proofing spell. "I kinda wanted to go swimming today, too." I gave another sigh and then shrugged. "Oh well. I'll just have to find something else to do."

Giving Kurama a devious look, I placed a quick kiss on his lips. He returned the kiss without a second thought. "I'm thinking that I should..." I began to say, but I paused. "Have breakfast!" I jumped out of Kurama's lap and went out of the room before he even had a chance to respond.

I went into the kitchen and quickly began to fix breakfast for both Kurama and myself. Everyone else seemed to be still asleep, which surprised me Of course, the luau and late night probably had something to do with that. Besides, we were on vacation. Any of us could sleep in if we wanted to. Plus, there was no way we were going to do much with it raining.

A few minutes later, Kurama joined me in the kitchen, fully dressed and looking completely awake. He had probably splashed cold water on his face to help with the process; that, or the kisses we had shared had woken him up. I was guessing on the latter.

"What are you making?" he asked as he came up behind me and looked over my shoulder.

"Omelets," I replied simply, adding a handful of grated cheese to the cooking egg. "You like cheese in yours too, right?"

He nodded his head. "Yeah."

"Good." I returned my attention to the eggs, Kurama's hands on my hips. He did not remove his warm hands until I made him take his plate of eggs. After his hands were gone, I could still feel the heat from them, warming me.

We both went into the dining room; but right as I set my plate down on the table, I heard the front door suddenly bang open and then closed. Curious as to what was going on, I rushed out into the living room. I caught a glimpse of Cassie's quickly retreating back. She was obviously in a hurry and soaking wet.

A sense of worry and concern rose up in me, and I frowned. For some reason, I had a feeling that something was very wrong. My gut was telling me that Cassie needed help, and my gut was usually right when it came to Cassie.

"Kurama," I yelled at him from the living room. "Keep my food warm for me, please. I'm gonna go talk to Cassie for a bit."

The fox demon must have heard the worry in my voice, because he did not question me. "Alright..." he replied, sounding a little surprised and confused. The poor guy did not have a clue what was going on; but then again, neither did I.

"Thanks!" I shouted back at him, walking off to look for Cassie. I first looked in her room, but I had some very bad luck. She was not there, but Hiei's stuff was. At least, I assumed it was the fire demon's things. No one else owned so much black. The suitcase full of black clothing was sitting in the corner of the room.

I frowned, not quite sure of what that object in Cassie's room meant. I had a pretty good idea though. Whether it had something to do with my worry for Cassie or not was a completely different story.

My anxiety increasing, I went into my room, hoping to find her there. Surely if something was bothering her, she would seek me out. It was an automatic response: If you are having problems, you go to your best friend. Simple. Of course, nothing was that simple. I could not find Cassie in my room either.

Just as I was about to leave, I heard sniffling coming from my closet. Someone was inside of it, crying.

Biting my bottom lip and making sure my door was closed and locked, I opened up my closet door. There, on the floor, huddled in a corner, was Cassie. She was curled up in the fetal position, and she was shaking with the sobs she was obviously trying to hold in. Water from her hair and clothes ran down her body to pool on the floor.

Whatever had happened to make her cry, well... it had to be bad. Cassie never cried over little things. Heck, she rarely ever cried anyway. She was a strong, practical person with a normally sweet personality. Sure, she could be devious and annoying at times as well, but she had spunk. It took a lot to get her depressed.

"Cassie?" I said her name softly as I sat down in front of her. Gently, I placed a hand on her shoulder. "What happened?" I skipped the normal are-you-all-right question. It was obvious that she was not all right. All I had to say to that was, if anyone had hurt her, then they were going to pay. No one was allowed to hurt my friends so badly and escape punishment.

"Kaline..." Cassie lifted her head so that her blood-shot eyes met mine. Tears were falling fast as she looked at me, and so much pain filled her expression that it was almost too much to bare.

Suddenly, she broke down fully. She launched herself at me and began to cry into my shoulder, her sob racking her body. It was her obvious way of asking for support and comfort.

"Shhh..." I whispered, giving my friend a tight hug. "Try to calm down a little and tell me what happened, okay?" I really should have told myself that, because my anger was quickly rising. If I found out who had hurt her, then there was a good chance that said person would get severely beat, if not killed. What happened to the person would depend on how much my demon side surfaced.

The desolate girl fought back a sob as she tried to speak. "H-he doesn't," -sob- "love me. He," -sob, sniffle- "wa-was only," -another sob- "using me."

"It was Hiei, wasn't it?" I asked, my tone dark. If he had hurt her even after I had warned him, then I was going to damn his soul to hell. He had broken Cassie, something that I had originally thought impossible to do.

Cassie nodded her head as she pulled away so she could look me in the face. "I made..." she began to say, but a fresh amount of tears and sobs kept her from speaking for a bit.

"It'll be all right," I promised her, rubbing her back soothingly.

She shook her head at that statement as she fought back more tears. "I... I made another mistake," she said and promptly went back to crying on my shoulder.

I waited a few moments before I dared to ask her another question. "What exactly did Hiei do to you?" I inquired as gently as I could while I seethed on the inside. Damn, the fire demon was definitely going to pay for this incident. "C'mon, you can tell me."

"He... we..." Cassie broke down crying once again, acting like her heart was broken. She mumbled things by my ear; and after a few moments, I had figured out roughly what had happened.

They had had sex; and judging by earlier statements, Hiei obviously did not love Cassie. She loved him, though, with all of her heart. That was the only way the fire demons' lack of feelings could have hurt her so much.

I wrapped her in an even tighter hug as I sent out my magic. While I whispered comforting words in my friend's ear, I cast a strong protective spell around the closet and my room. The spell would keep her smell trapped in here as well as keep Hiei out. It would also keep the fire demon from sensing her presence. The spell was as powerful as I could make it; and once I was done, I felt very proud of myself. Hiei would be incapable of bothering my friend as long as she stayed hidden in my room.

"Would you like me to bring you some breakfast?" I asked her once she had quieted down and had stopped sobbing. Tears still trickled down her face, but it was not as bad as before.

Cassie nodded her head. "Yes, please."

"Eggs sound okay to you?" I tried to force a smile to my face for her benefit, but I failed. I was too furious at Hiei to even give a small smirk.

"Yeah," she responded dully, curling back into a ball as she retreated into the corner once more.

"Okay then. I'll be back soon," I promised, standing up and leaving my room. As soon as I closed the door behind me, I allowed my temper to finally flare up. With my anger came my demon form, but I was too angry to care. I even sensed that my powers were making themselves noticeable, but once again I did not care.

My tail lashing back and forth behind me, I stomped into the kitchen. In there, I found Kurama fixing some food; and Hiei was nearby, talking to him.

I stalked up to the fire demon, my magic swirling about me. The wind drastically picked up in the kitchen, and little sparks of power flashed around me. "You are a fucking son of a bitch, Hiei," I informed him coldly.

The fire demon looked at me, surprise in his eyes. He had never ever heard me talk like that, nor had he ever seen me so angry. Unfortunately for him, the expression of shock on his face did nothing to dampen my fury. It only increased it.

Kurama turned to face me, his expression just as surprised. He had never seen the side of me that he was seeing at that moment. It was quite possible that I was actually scaring him a little. Of course, right then, I could have cared less. My fury would not let me care.

"I cannot believe what you fucking did to Cassie," I hissed at him, baring my fangs. "You broke her spirit! She's crying 'cause of you, you bastard!" I paused to let that sink in for a moment. "I warned you, Hiei. I told you not to hurt her, but you did. You know what the consequence is for hurting her..."
Hiei's eyes went even wider before they narrowed into slits. He knew that if I was going to punish him, I would have to catch him. So be it. My demon side was looking forward to a hunt.

"Calm down, Kaline," Kurama told me softly, his voice gently and calming. Well, it would have been calming if I had not been so angry. Still, he did have an effect on me.

My mind began to function a little bit more rationally at that point, and I decided that killing Hiei was a little too drastic. Besides, there were things that were sooooo much worse than death.

"But, Hiei, I will spare your life due to the fact that you have saved mine before," I told him, ignoring the kitsune. When I was angry, I basically had tunnel vision. "You will not escape punishment though!" Gathering up my magic, I smacked Hiei hard across the face, sending him stumbling back a few paces. I had attached a spell to that hit, and it was not a pleasant one. Of course, it would take Hiei a bit to realize that I had done something magical to him.

Growling at the fire demon, I turned my attention away from him and focused on breakfast. Cassie had wanted food. I was not hungry any more because of my fury, so I figured that she could have my eggs.

Taking a deep breath, I stopped the wind that had formed in the house. Then, I went into the dining room, picked up my plate of eggs, re-heated it in the microwave, and then began to take it from Cassie.

"Listen up, Hiei," I snarled before I left the kitchen. "You will not follow me. You are to stay away from Cassie." I paused to fix him with a death glare. "You have hurt her enough already, so if you disobey me, I may just be forced to kill you anyway."

Then, I turned away from him and walked away. Before I was out of hearing distance, I heard Hiei say one last thing: "Damn. My cheek still hurts."
