First Chapter: Birth

Hina lay on the couch , her face a mask of pain, with Atsuko holding her hand and baby Yusuke wailing in the background. There was a ringing in her ears and sharp pains erupting in her lower abdominal area. Her stomach was swelled and she was sweating from every pore.

So this is what it feels like to give birth. God! It feels like hell! , Hina thought. As the pain increased she held Atsuko’s hand tighter and tighter. She could feel their moist hands slipping.

“Don’t let go! Please, don’t let go.”, Hina screamed.

“I wont, don’t worry. I’m not going to let go.”, Atsuko replied.

Hina began to shriek in pain. Atsuko wiped the sweat off of Hina’s forehead. Hina shrieked again, only louder this time- much louder.

“I know, Hina, I know what it feels like. I’ve done this before. Just push. I’m going to let go of your hand just this once, so that I can take this baby out of you and it will all be over soon.”

“No! Don’t leave me! Please!”

“It’s okay. It will all be over soon.” Atsuko wore a pair of purple plastic gloves. She looked into Hina, and saw the head of the baby. It was covered with a thin layer of soft black hair. Atsuko watched the head poke out of Hina, when she realized with a jolt that something was missing.

“Hina, where do you keep the scissors?!”

“Why the hell do need scissors? I’m in labor!”

“To cut the umbilical cord, goddamn it!”

“In the top drawer of the kitchen counter!”

Atsuko ran into the kitchen and fumbled in the kitchen counter drawer, looking for the scissors.

Hina screamed.

Atsuko ran back into the living room, her heart pounding furiously. She ran to the couch, and saw the dark haired baby lying on the plastic bag covering the couch. She hurriedly cut the umbilical cord connecting the baby and the after birth. She held him upside down and smacked the baby on the bottom.

“What the hell are you doing?! You just hit my baby!”, Hina screamed.

“One, that sounded very odd coming from a fifteen year old girl, and two, that’s what you’re supposed to do. They do it in hospitals all the time. It’s to make them draw their first breath.”

Atsuko held the baby upright, and started to hand it to Hina.

Hina gasped and grabbed her lower abdominal area.

“Are you okay?”, Atsuko asked.

“I-I think there may be another one!”

“Wha-What?! You’re having twins?!”
Hina started to push again, but when Atsuko did not see the baby’s head after a while, she became worried.

“What’s wrong? I don’t see the head.”, Atsuko asked.

“I don’t know. It’s not coming out!”

Atsuko gently placed the baby on the couch. She began to try and reach inside of Hina, but she abruptly closed her legs.

“Open your legs!”, Atsuko shouted.

“It hurts!”

“Keep your legs open!”

Hina opened her legs and Atsuko reached into Hina and felt something small. It was a foot.

“It’s upside down!”

“It’s what!”

“Upside down. Keep your legs open!”

Atsuko grabbed both feet inside of Hina, and pulled on them. She saw the lower half of the body; it was a girl. She reached inside of Hina to find the arms of the baby. When she grabbed the arms of the baby girl she also felt something near the neck. Wait-she didn’t even feel the neck! Her heart stopped. She roughly pulled the baby out of Hina. Tears welled up in her eyes as she saw that the purplish blue cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck. She pulled it off, hoping that the girl still had a chance, but all of the color drained from her face when she realized that the girl’s face was blue.

“Yeah, that was the last one.”, Hina says breathing heavily. “So, which was it? A boy or a girl?”
Atsuko didn’t answer. After a while Hina asks:

“What’s wrong?”

Atsuko didn’t say anything. She couldn’t. How was she supposed to tell her best friend that her baby was dead?

Hina tried to sit up, and caught a glimpse of the baby’s face. She deflated into a heap of helpless sobs.
“At least you still have the boy. . .” , Atsuko whispered quietly.

“Yeah, I know, but I always wanted to have a daughter.”, Hina buried her face in her hands. “I would have named her Yukina.” Her voice was muffled in a mountain of sobs. . .

Atsuko finally let go of the baby girl, and picked up the boy. She handed him to Hina, who had finished crying. Hina was sitting up, her eyes red. Then she held out her arms and held the boy while Atsuko called for an ambulance. The baby boy was small. His hair was fine and black and his skin was soft and rosy, like pink velvet. He was so beautiful.

“I’ll go get some towels.”, Atsuko said. When she came back Hina said:

“I think I’ll name him Hiei.”

Then, all of a sudden, Hiei started crying- very loudly. Which made Yusuke cry- very loudly.

“Aw man. What do you think he wants?”, Hina asked.

“I think he’s hungry.”, Atsuko said, laughing.

Hina went into a blank stare and said:

“I have to breast feed him, don’t I.”

“Yep!”, Atsuko said.

“Shit.”

End of Chapter

So sorry that this chapter is so sad. It gets better (sort of) so don’t worry.
