Chapter 7: Closing
Youko bent down next to May's right side. He looked at May's usually energetic face that was now pale. Youko was surprised when he noticed that May had a smile gracing her lifeless expression. He gathered her cold, pale, limped body into his arms. He got to his feet slowly with May in his arms bridal style.
“I remember when even the tiniest little thing would make you come running to me in tears. You have grown very strong. I'm very proud of you, May. I just wish I could have been there to see you become this beautiful, powerful young demon you are now,” Youko thought sorrowfully as he looked down at May.
----A Week Later----
May tried to move her arms but couldn't. In fact she felt like she couldn't move almost any part of her body. It took her a few moments to remember what had transpired. The memories of her fight with Youko came flooding back as a crashing wave. May quickly opened her eyes and tried to sit up. Pain shot through her entire being with even the slightest movement. After getting only a few inches off the pillow she fell back down onto it.
“You should not move just yet. Even though you have been asleep for a week you are still not fully healed,” Kurama suggested out of nowhere.
May just looked up at the ceiling not willing to go through the searing pain again. “An entire week, huh? Are you the one who helped me?”
“Yes. I am sorry for my other half's brutalness but there was a demon there...”
May turned her head to the right, which cut him off. Sitting on the only window seal of the white room was Kurama. He smiled at her with a genuine smile.
“Yes, I know. You're Shuichi, aren't you?” May asked a bit more lighthearted.
“You may call me Kurama. Shuichi is my human name,” Kurama answered.
“I perfer Shuichi,” May bluntly told him. “If I call him Kurama that means he's part of Youko…and he's not,” May thought, watching Kurama get off of the window seal.
“That is fine. I know you probably don't trust me, but…”
“You are Youko's other half. If he trusts you enough to let you be out when I awaken…then I do, too.”
Just then the door opened. May turned her head to the left but couldn't see the door. She tried to get up once again. The shock of pain surged through her entire being once more. So she chose to lay still.
“Hey, Kurama. How's she doing?” asked a rather punkish voice.
“I'm alive, if that's what you mean,” May answered as kind as she could with the pain rushing through her every nerve.
“So you finally decided to wake up?” the voice asked again.
“If I had a choice in the matter I would have stayed asleep. What a stupid question! Why does Youko choose to stay here?” May thought to herself.
Realizing May wasn't going to answer him, the owner of the new voice walked over into May's line of vision. She then realized it was one of the teen boys. This one wasn't the stupid looking one though.
“How are you feeling, May?” Yusuke asked, looking down at May.
“I'm fine for what condition I am currently in,” May answered.
“Yusuke, is everyone else here?” Kurama asked.
Yusuke looked over at Kurama. May did the same.
“Well…Kuwabara just get back and Hiei is sulking cause Yukina hasn't left yet. Botan's here as well,” Yusuke answered, lowering his tone in the last sentence.
“So it's time?” Kurama asked solemnly.
“Yeah…He wants May to go as well.”
“Go where?” May asked, keeping her voice down.
Kurama and Yusuke looked at her than at each other. May started to get frustrated, but didn't allow herself to show it. Kurama looked back at May.
“To Spirit World. Koenma needs to give you your punishment,” Kurama answered.
“We'll let you get dressed,” Yusuke said, leaving the room.
Kurama soon followed suit. May sat up with all her strength. She allowed the pain to surge through her every nerve. She got out of the bed appearing to have more bandages than skin at the moment. She then stumbled over to the opened window. May fell to her knees at the window seal. Her breathing was raspy. She got to her feet and got onto the window seal.
“Where do you think you're running off to in your condition?” asked an all to familiar voice.
May hit the side of the window seal with all the strength she could muster up. She lowered her head and her hand. The wind blew through the window. The warm gust of air played with May's beautiful black, red, and silver hair. It felt good against the skin that wasn't covered with the bandages.
“How did you know I was leaving, Youko?” May asked, placing a hand over her bandaged chest in a childish attempt to try to stop the pain.
“I know you too well, May. You know if you run now the punishment will be more severe when they catch you,” Youko answered, walking up behind May.
“Koenma knows everything I've done. Youko, I'm not proud of what I have been doing. I have done very terrible things. He'll probably sentence me to death and...and then...”
“May, if you run right now you'll die. You can't protect yourself in the condition you are in.”
“I'll die no matter what, then?”
“I'm sure Shuichi and his friends will help lighten your punishment.”
May turned to Youko with tears rolling down her cheeks. Youko smiled warmly at her. May collapsed into Youko's arms so she could cry into his chest. Youko slowly brought up his left hand and stroked her long hair. To him it was like they were back at the bandits' hideout so long ago.
“Let's go,” Youko said, holding May an arms length away.
May and Kurama came walking out of the room a few minutes later. Yusuke, Kuwabara, Yukina, and Botan looked at them. Kurama nodded to his friends.
----Spirit World----
May and the others stood in front of Koenma's desk. Koenma was in his teenage form just to make this meeting go by a bit more smoothly. Hiei was leaning up against the far wall of the office, Yusuke and Kuwabara were waiting impatiently, May was staring off into space thinking of what her punishment would be, and Kurama was standing there next to May calmly.
“He's sure taking his sweet time!” Youko stated obviously starting to get irritated.
“I didn't know you get so impatient,” Shuichi teased his other half.
“You know I can't just look the other way with this demon,” Koenma broke the tense silence with a statement not really directed towards anyone.
“Come on! She attacked us. So what? We get attacked on a regular basis,” Yusuke said, trying to sound bored.
“That's the least of her felonies, Yusuke,” Koenma said, looking at the teen boy with his hands folded on the desk.
“What did she do then?” Kuwabara asked.
“She is an assassin for hire and a thief. She has killed many of my men that we have sent after her and several dozen humans. Those that were killed are only the ones we know of. She is very stealthy. There could be hundreds more if we believe the rumors. All this is only scratching the surface of what her crimes are,” Koenma answered.
With every word Koenma spoke May's heart sank deeper and deeper. She really didn't want Youko to know all the things she had done. Yusuke and Kuwabara were very shocked at hearing this.
“Now Youko will hate me! Not to mention that I just lost all the back up from the others,” May thought as she looked at the ground.
“Can't you just give her community service or something?” Yusuke insisted at.
“The rules say this assassin, this `Beautiful Death', has to be sentence to death then punished accordingly,” Koenma answered.
“May,” May said so softly that it was barley audible.
Everyone looked towards her. May felt their stares as she looked at the ground. Kurama saw how worried May was and was about to put his right hand on her should when she looked up. When she did she looked straight at Koenma.
“My name is May Hana and I know what you need to do. I know that I have done unspeakable things. I was even going to run from this meeting when I had the chance. Youko stopped me before I could even get away,” May admitted boldly.
Koenma looked over at Kurama. All Kurama did was slightly nod his head. Koenma nodded back at him before looking back to May.
“Punish me the way you have to. I will not run any more,” May finished. “I have found my Youko and I have no regrets,” were her thoughts.
“You are no longer allowed to be an assassin. You are restricted to the Living World unless on a mission with the Spirit Detectives. This should go without saying, you are also forbidden from killed any human. If you brake any of these agreements then you will be sentenced to death and punished as seen fit,” Koenma said.
May's eyes lit up. She was happy that Youko was right. Yusuke wrapped his right arm around May's shoulder with a smile. Kuwabara gave her a thumbs up.
“They're weird but they're okay. I think I might enjoy being part of the team,” May thought, smiling at the two teen boys.
As everyone was celebrating, they heard the door to the office shut. They all looked over to find Hiei missing. May's smile soon turned into a deep frown.
“Yet…Youko won't be around,” May added onto her thoughts.
“Welcome to the team, May!” Yusuke and Kuwabara said together.
“I'm glad to have you as a partner,” Kurama said as reassuring as he could.
May looked from Yusuke and Kuwabara to Kurama. She let a small smile grace her features. She watched as Kurama smiled at her and listened to the teen boys chatter.
“But I think I'll get use to this half as well,” May thought. “You smile way too much,” she said to Kurama, smiling genuinely at him.
