For as long as there has been a Digital World there has always been a protector of this World. But when the first Digi Destined came the Generation skipped. So they had no Protector but when the time came for Davis and the others to come into the Digital World a young girl was waiting for them to be their Protector for any reason.
The Protector that was supposed to be protecting the orginal Digi Destined died before she/he got a chance to do it to protect their younger sibling.
(This is the second season of Digimon, the one with Davis and Ken.)
