Tidus and his brother, Reagan, get invitation to be the Earth Lords but will not except unless the other finds the way to become a Lord also. Lords are mortal humans who inhirit a percentage of a gods powers and battles to the death with other Lords. The use of this competion: the gods keep score of it, as if a game.
