This was a very cute story, but I think they did have some kind of sterilized stuff since they did perform surgeries then. Their medicine was advanced or more advanced than it is now without the technology. When they got conquered, all that knowledge was lost. Remember, they come from a defunct advanced civilization that existed before that that no historian will mention because they can't find it.
