Been a while since I've read a fanfic this enjoyable.
The plot was unique. It is the simplest situation to work with, yet no-one had thought of it before. It followed the flow of daily life without getting the reader bored for a minute, something rare for a fanfic that takes place in a certain area only.
Everyone in the fanfic was in-character. Jyou was not overly shy, like in most romance fanfics, which helps for originality in the display of his feelings. He was also reluctant to have a change of pace in his life, like in the Digital World, but not showing that as much because he didn't want to hurt his friend's feelings. Watching his mood change in these two weeks, seeing how Mimi's cheerful personality affected him was realistic like in no fanfic I've read before, and enjoyable beyond what I can describe. It's like seeing yourself in the character and feeling excited even though nothing interesting is actually happening - feeling excited because you see him doing things you wish you could do in his place, and him feeling more alive makes you more alive even for just a moment.
Mimi was very in-character too. Ditzy, but not stupid, which many people mistake in fanfics. She was sweet, and much closer to the Japanese version of her than any other fanfic I've seen. Her cheerful personality does wonders to keep the reader interested in the fanfic and make it an enjoyable read. The part flowers, colours and scents take in the fanfic helps to underline the alive feeling she generates.
Gomamon was also true to himself. Cracking jokes whenever he got the chance, being overly enthusiastic about most things and other little details of the little guy's persoanlity we all love. He was a necessary addition to the fanfic, as he is one of the main characters that is able to produce Humor.
We didn't see as much of Palmon, but it was enough for me to know it was *Palmon* and she would still be Palmon even if I switched names between the characters. Sensitive, helpful and supportive. I especially liked her interaction with Jyou, I can see her finding an interest in getting someone to learn more about plants.
I really liked how you added Michael in the story too. I think he and Mimi would remain close even after the adventures in the Digital World, so supporting her financially is one of the first things he'd do to support her. I was looking forward to finding a fanfic where he and Jyou meet. Michael was in-character too. Polite, honest and sure of himself. It was nice to see him play a positive part in the fanfic and not being a jerk like most fanfics portray him. I also can see Jyou being a bit jealous about his relationship with Mimi, but I don't think he'd express it as openly as he did during the dance.
The story was too long for readers that are not a fan of the couple, I think. But long fanfics manage to develop the relationship slowly and realistically, which I think matters more than just reading a story of your favourite couple. I like it much better this way and I think it may get people to think about the couple twice.
There were no grammar or spelling mistakes, as far as I'm concerned. I usually read fanfics two or three times to be sure when beta-reading, but I didn't spot any on first sight. Good job.
The descriptions were beautiful too. Simple and easy to understand, with great choice of words for every line.
The title fits the fanfic perfectly. It's closely connected to the beginning and the ending, and you don't suspect how serious a role "the doctor's orders" played in Jyou's life unless you read the fanfic.
The main genre was Romance, but not what I'm used to reading. Romance fanfics are passionate, dramatic, fluffy, or barely romantic but this doesn't fit in any of the above categories. It moves slowly, exceeding friendship without you realising it, and helping you understand what these two people mean to each other without the over-used descriptions of kisses or romantic thoughts. It had Romance, Humor and Drama tied together in a way that just lightens your heart.
I look forward to reading more fanfics of this couple from you. I will review more stories of yours when I get the time to, but this should do for now. Good luck with your fanfics! | Reviewed By: kimaru On: June 29, 2002 21:22 CDT Comment/Review: That was such a wonderful and enjoyable fan fic to read! It was my first Mimoe, too. I have been a Mimoe fan for a loooong time but I have never read any of its fan fics. This was so cute and lovable that I thought I had better write one too! :) You really made my day! | Reviewed By: Aspaerea [MediaMiner Member] On: June 29, 2002 15:39 CDT Comment/Review: *snickers* Nice. ^_^ Just what I needed to brighten up after reading Carry Me... which was incredible! Just really sad... ^_^ So a nice happy story was perfect. :P You may be turning me into a Jyoumi fan... ah, who am I kidding? Good thing Jyou took that vacation! |
