"Badger or Raccoon?" Reviews/Comments [ 4 ] | Reviewed By: kuroikeito On: January 05, 2008 23:28 CST Comment/Review: Hachi is actually a racoon dog, called a tanuki in Japan. They are members of the canine family, and therefore more closely related to dogs than they are to racoons or badgers. Tanuki are found across most of Asia, and are often depicted as tricksters in folklore. Because many Westerners are unfamiliar with them, tanuki are usually called racoons or badgers in translations, which adds to the confusion.

I also think I heard that they range all the way to France, as in they live all over the place. Hope this helps.
