Yessss!!! Bad grammar drives me insane, and one of the biggest problems people have is incorrect use of the comma (and the semicolon, for that matter). I use the comma a lot in my fanfictions, and my writing in general; it's a great way to make sure the reader understands exactly what you're trying to say. I've never heard the rule "when in doubt, leave it out" applied to commas before, and I'm glad. With all the stupid rules flying around in the English language, that one has got to be one of the stupidest. I completely agree with everything you said.

every teacher had their own ideas whether or not to use the comma before 'and'; most of them taught me not to use it. i wish there were some solid rules that are easily understood... especially for authors so they would know why the IYFG mods disqualify for punctuation. *pulls hair* what rules do they adhere to? maybe if they would list their punctuation guidelines, stupid people like me who beta read will have an easier go of it. . . i am sorry for the rant but your story touched me, intimately. >=P~ truly a pleasure, ginny
