Nice build up as to why the two would meet, and how they might get a long. I was a bit disapointed with Ranma's fight with the bandits though. I am not saying he should always win, but I really grow tired of the distracted excuse. Just about every fic use's it when they want him to lose. A person trained to fight all their life, always getting distracted mid battle, is not a very good fighter.

I think the author is right in having Ranma's combat skills as portrayed at the start of the series, since it was only after he picked up special techniques from the Amazons, Ryouga, Happy, and the more secret Anything Goes lessons that he got the more familiar amazing powers that everyone is more familiar with. It is little wonder that many fic writers that do alternate beginnings sometimes come up with all sorts of methods to get at least the Amazon training in. Also keep in mind that Jade is like a very "high level" RPG with wizards, dragons, martial arts masters that are on the level of Herb, monsters on the level of Saffron, undead, and where the monster and villain populations are sufficiently high to keep the job of "adventurers" as very profitable career choice in Jade (although a dangerous one). Up to this time Ranma has only faced relatively moderately skilled human martial artists with showing him only limited ki techniques and normal wild animals from Genma's training. I think I would put him slightly below Ryan Talbot at this point in the story, though given Ranma's famous martial arts and ki mastery learning curve it should prove interesting.
Personally, I would not mind if the author has Ranma takes an entirely different developmental growth path in martial arts and personal growth than that in the "original time line", given that Jade has a lot different fighting "schools" and ki-users that Ranma could run into. Ranma would probably have a blast just going to the competitions as even member of an audience just to watch the competitors in action and learning their styles and techniques just by watching them.
I like the unusual pairing of Ranma and Grave. Ranma's skills in survival and evasion from being with Genma for all those years on the "trip" would be useful to helping keep the pair alive and avoiding pursuits. While Grave's copied knowledge of Gina's advanced intellectual pursuits and Britanny's social skills might be useful for tutoring in Ranma's lack of the same skills. | Reviewed By: Mike Serpent On: July 26, 2003 17:25 CDT Comment/Review: Damn Nova, this isn't your fanfiction. Tanya can make Ranma weak as a baby if she wanted too-IT"S her (gender?) STORY.
Geez, I hate it when readers bitch about they want this and that when it's the author story where he/she can do whatever he/she want. It's like ARE YOU DOING THE STORY? No? Your other fanfiction was ok. I hope that this fanfiction contain some kind of huge adventure for Ranma and Grave.
The other one was like ok because there were hardly any HUGE mystery that effect the plot or lead it toward the climax. Ranma and Grave in the other fanfiction (noticed I never metion the name? I forgot the fanfiction name. lol) never really travel any where, that they stay in one place and the world of Jade is kind of a mystery.
But IT'S kewl!! I like this fanfiction and that other one. | Reviewed By: Nanya [MediaMiner Member] On: July 26, 2003 12:31 CDT Comment/Review: Hmm, Nova, you do have a point, I fleshed that little part out there. But remember this, the bandits weren't afraid to go up against a Werecreature, and they did it without silver or magic. I'd think they'd be a bit tougher than the average mugger I think. If you must know, Werecreatures of any type have superhuman speed, strength, and endurance. And the bandits were going up agianst what they thought was one.
This is also Ranma before the Manga started, he's not completely inhuman in his abilities just yet. Heck, in the manga Kuno managed to hit Ranma once or twice when they had their first true fight with his speed slash attack - the 1000 bokuto strikes. | Reviewed By: Nova On: July 26, 2003 03:33 CDT Rating(s):Style of Writing: 7 of 10 Spelling & Grammar: 8 of 10 Originality/Creativity: 4 of 10 Enjoyment Factor: 4 of 10 Overall Rating: 5 of 10 Comment/Review: Where the hell is Ranma's fighting ability??? Original matchup and setup. I hope you plan to give them some time together to train and bond before re-introducing the crew from Gold Diggers, Ranma, or both. |
