Falling Fast
Bulma awoke three nights later in a cold sweat. She had been having her dreams now for a month. The dream never changed, it just got more intensive every time. She had been surprised that she had actually fallen asleep that night. Bulma struggled to breathe, but when she did a sharp pain ran through her abdomen.
" Shit, shit, shit!" Bulma gasped as she fought to get out of bed. " Oh Kami no, its too early!" Bulma whispered as she dropped to her knees.
" Aunt Bulma!" She heard Celeste cry as she entered the room.
" Celeste." Bulma moaned breathlessly. " Go get help." Celeste turned away and sprinted out of the room. Bulma leaned against the edge of her bed and drew her knees up to her swollen stomach.
" Woman?" Vegeta asked, his voice calm. Celeste entered behind Vegeta and looked fearfully at them both.
" Vegeta." Bulma spoke weakly. Vegeta knelt down and picked her up off the floor.
" Brat, get back in bed and go to sleep." Vegeta commanded before stepping out onto Bulma's balcony and blasting off into the night sky. The pain that she was experiencing intensified with each passing minute. Vegeta looked down at Bulma, slightly worried.
" Oh Kami Vegeta, this can't be happening." She moaned. " I can't do this again." Bulma whimpered weakly, darkness invading her senses.
Bulma awoke hours later in the hospital. Her mother and father beside her. Celeste was lying across the end of the bed asleep.
" Mom? Dad? " Bulma asked groggily. " What happened?"
" Honey you were in labor. You have a little girl." Her mother paused. Bulma smiled sadly fearing the worst.
" She was premature, she's still alive, but she's very weak and isn't expected to live long." Her father spoke solemnly.
" Can I see her?" Bulma asked quietly.
" I think it would be best if you didn't." A male voice spoke, Bulma turned and noticed Dr.Santago standing in the doorway to her room. " Her heart is weak and she can't breathe properly because her lungs aren't fully developed." Bulma bowed her head in sorrow. " Besides you did have surgery."
" I really don't care Doctor; I just want to see my daughter." Bulma sobbed. " She's all that is left of her father." Dr.Santago sighed and stared off into space for several minutes before finally commenting.
" Okay, let me get a wheelchair." He said stepping out of the room. Leaving her alone with her parents.
" Dear were very sorry about the baby." Her mother said grasping her hand. " But you know you would have died if not for little Celeste and Vegeta."
" Yes I know." Bulma sobbed. Her heart felt as if it would collapse at any moment. An overwhelming sense of guilt began to fill her. This was her fault, it had to be. If only she had slept better, eaten better, stayed in shape, the list went on and on and on. Any reason was better than none.
" Here we go Bulma." Dr. Santiago said as he wheeled a wheel chair into her room. Bulma tried to smile at him, but couldn't find the heart to do it. Bulma's parents helped her get from the bed to the wheelchair, she felt very sore and had no doubt that she would have most likely had been in pain if not for the morphine. She passed many rooms on her way to the preemie unit and couldn't hold back her tears as she watched couples gawk over there new children. Bulma had no husband, and now a very sick child. That was almost too much to bear.
" Miss Briefs." Dr. Santiago said as he wheeled her over to a window. " This is your baby girl." He said motioning to a tiny little figure in a plastic like crib. Bulma's eyes widened in shock. The little girl had pale skin and a few wisps of dark hair with a bluish hue. It was the girl from her dreams. The girl from her dreams was her baby?
" Baby Nyx." Bulma thought aloud as she pressed her hand against the glass. " That is her name. Nyx." Suddenly alarms could be heard from inside the room.
" I think its time to go." Dr. Santiago said as he turned her wheelchair back around and headed for her room. Bulma put her head down; she knew what was happening. Painful sobs began to rack her body; Kami fate was so fucking cruel. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces and counting. There was no way she could survive this. She prayed that she would just die, then she wouldn't have to deal with this, and she wouldn't have to watch her baby girl die.
" I can't do this." Bulma sobbed, her body aching from the pain of her sobs.
" You can Bulma!" A voice whispered in her mind. " You can and you will! For Celeste! For Yamcha! For Nyx! For me! Bulma you can do this!"
" No, no, no, no, no, no!" Bulma screamed, before slipping into darkness.
Bulma was awakened by a twinge in her hand. Her mother was beside her when she awoke. She looked as if she had been crying all night. Bulma tried to smile as she sat up slightly, pain filling her once again.
" Bulma honey." Her mother cooed. " How are you feeling?"
" Like I've been hit by a truck." Bulma replied sarcastically. Her mother bowed her head and nodded. " What's wrong mom?" Bulma asked, as if she didn't already know.
" Its Nyx dear, she died right after you saw her." Her mother whispered gently. Tears filled Bulma's eyes again. Her daughter, her and Yamcha's daughter, gone." Her little lungs just couldn't work right." Bulma began to sob.
" It's not right mom." She cried. Her mother was holding her gently.
" I know." Her mother said kissing her forehead lightly." But she's not in pain anymore, right?" Bulma only nodded she couldn't deny that, but she couldn't deny that she wished it was her instead of her baby.
" Honey believe it or not, this is all going to get better." Her mother whispered. " You may not think so but it will."
" How the hell would you know!" Bulma yelled suddenly not quite believing her mothers audacity to tell her that.
" Because I too lost a child." Her mother said sadly. " Before you were born. I was five months pregnant when I miscarried." Bulma stared silently at her mother.
" I'm sorry mom." Bulma said through her tears. Her mother nodded.
" I didn't think I would ever get over that." Her mother whispered, tears pouring down her face" In a way I never did, but I was blessed enough to have another child." She said gently stroking her hair. " But I still think about that baby every day of my life."
" I'm sorry mom." Bulma whispered. " I didn't know."
" Yes, but now you do." Her mother said wiping away her own tears. " I think I'd better go so you can get some rest." Her mother said as she headed out the door.
" Yeah." She said turning away from her mom and closing her eyes.
When she awoke, the late evening sunlight poured through the cracks in the curtains. To her surprise Vegeta stood in the corner of her room.
" Bout damn time you woke up woman." He growled from the corner. Bulma said nothing only groaning in response.
" Where are my parents?" Bulma asked quietly.
" Down the hall." He said simply, moving to a seat beside her bed.
" Where is Celeste?" Bulma questioned.
" The brat is with your parents." He stated. Bulma nodded slightly, turning onto her side to face him. Bulma smiled as she closed her eyes, she felt safe for the first time in five months, and no matter how she denied it later on she knew she felt safe because the saiyan prince was beside her.
" Vegeta." Bulma said softly.
" What woman?" He asked, his voice almost gentle.
" Stay with me." She pleaded, opening her eyes. He nodded slightly, leaning back in the chair. " Thank you." Bulma whispered, as she closed her eyes again drifting off to sleep.
(A/N: I'm sorry that was so short, but that was all that was on the agenda for this chapter. Next time it gets a bit more interesting! Bet ya can't wait! lol. Please r/r! ~ Kira ~ )
