"I should be honest with you, Kaine. It has only been this way for about the last four years." Jason sighed and stared out the window of Kaine's office into the sky. "There were a few incidents before then, and I remember being afraid of him when I was small. I didn't see him often back then, though. We were all kept in the Dormitory at that age." He shrugged slightly.
Kaine took a long drag on his cigarette and exhaled it slowly. It was the fourth one he had lit since Jason had come into his office a half hour before. What he had heard was almost too much to believe, but he had seen Hiroshi's handiwork and had long suspected something was going on, even before he had run into Jason the previous night. "So why did that change?"
"I was officially transferred to the Jupiter Project after the mind link was implanted." Jason shrugged again, rubbing his wrists. Kaine decided that gesture was probably only half due to the pain of the bruises. He recalled seeing Jason do it often, a nervous gesture.
"So Hiroshi had more access to you." Kaine stated, Jason nodded slightly in reply. Kaine finished his cigarette and flicked the butt into the ashtray on his desk. " I've got something for you. It's not much, but maybe it will help you, since you won't allow me to do more." He pulled a bag out of his desk drawer and fished out the contents. Jason turned to look at him in surprise, his expression for once very readable. "I have a friend down in the Med Wing. I went to see him this morning and got you these." He set two small jars on the desk. "I didn't tell him who they were for."
Jason nodded again. "What are they?"
"This one," Kaine said picking up the blue jar, "is for sore muscles. It should help." He picked up the second jar, colored brown," This one is for your wrist, and any other cuts you may have. It will help them heal cleanly." As Jason reached forward to take them, the sleeves of his jacket fell back, showing the now dark purple bruises. Kaine exhaled sharply, and leaned back, studying Jason with concern in his golden eyes. "Are you sure there is nothing else you want me to do?"
Jason shook his head. "Thank you, but no." He stood up and stretched slowly, catlike. "I have to be going now. I have to make up for the classes I missed the past three days and get something to eat before the cafeteria closes. Considering the lack of success we had today, Hiroshi will no doubt be in a bad mood tonight."
"So he'll call you." Kaine added, exasperation in his voice. "And you'll go?"
Jason just shrugged. "Of course. He'd only come get me if I disobeyed again. He's done so before. What else would you have me do?"
Kaine only stared in disbelief. "Don't go." It was almost a plea.
"But then I get to enjoy his displeasure. I'd prefer to forego that pleasure at the present time. Disobedience has gotten me into trouble in the past. Not just me but others as well. I'd prefer not to lose you, Sensei, and it would not take Hiroshi much to figure out that you know." He walked to the door and turned back, his voice and eyes cold. "I will deal with Hiroshi, Kaine, when the time is right. This will end soon enough."
With Jason gone, Kaine fumbled at his drawer, opening it to get out another pack of cigarettes. He smacked the box against his palm, packing it, and opened it. Angry, he broke the first one he tried to light and tossed it into the ashtray. He got the second one lit and began to pace about his office, smoke curling up in a trail behind him as he walked.
He just could not understand why Jason would tell him not to do anything, knowing that Hiroshi's abuse would only continue. Even admitting that he would continue to obey Hiroshi made Kaine angry. For the moment he couldn't do anything.
Or could he?
With sudden inspiration, Kaine sat down at his terminal and punched in a series of commands, cigarette dangling from his lips. The screen came to life and he began typing rapidly. Somewhere there had to be proof to back Jason up. Kaine didn't know what the young man was going to do, but he did know that the others would not believe any charges Jason made against Hiroshi without some sort of proof.
Kaine's hands flew over the keyboard, hoping the protections on Hiroshi's personal files were not beyond his ability. Kaine did not have Jason's easy access to the supercomputer, but he was quite skilled as a hacker, the product of a misspent youth in the computerized city of Tanagura. If there was any proof to be found in Hiroshi's files, Kaine was determined to find it. Jason deserved whatever help the young psychologist could offer.
Jason had spent the evening studying with Rand and Kevin in his room. He had enjoyed spending time with them outside of class. They had completed most of their work and then the discussion had turned to Jupiter. They, too, were disappointed by the lack of response from the supercomputer. Jason told them to be patient. He'd felt something in the lab that morning. It had almost been as if Jupiter had known he was connected to Her, but She had not responded to him or any of the scientists. Jason had not told Hiroshi this. The Doctor would find out eventually anyway, and Jason only had a feeling, not any concrete evidence.
Now that Kevin and Rand had left, he lay alone in the darkness, unable to sleep, Kevin's parting question still ringing in his ears.
"So what if nothing changes once Jupiter awakens?"
Jason had to admit that he didn't know. If Jupiter chose not to help them, they would have to find a way to help themselves. He wasn't sure how much longer he could deal with Hiroshi, despite his words to Kaine earlier that evening. Of course, Kevin knew nothing of that. Among the Genesis group, only Rand knew what was really going on between Jason and his Guardian.
Jason tossed over onto his side and rubbed his forehead. That strange ringing had begun again that evening. It could only be the mind link. Perhaps Jupiter's new programming didn't agree with it. Jason sighed and added it to the list of things he could do nothing about in his present situation.
The intercom rang and Jason sat up, looking at it in surprise. Curfew has only been called twenty minutes ago. Still, he knew who it was. No one else would ever call him after curfew. He answered it on the third ring and, after a moment of listening to Hiroshi, clicked if off and started to get dressed. He could hear Kaine telling him not to go and wanted to agree. Especially after last night's events. But it would be worse if he didn't. He knew that all to well.
He left the Dormitory a few minutes later and arrived at Hiroshi's door all too soon. Closing his eyes, he pressed his palm to the keypad and entered the dark apartment.
Kaine pushed himself away from the terminal, a look of grim triumph on his face. He'd found what he was looking for, among other things. As he had expected, Hiroshi had cameras installed throughout his apartment and he had saved several files from those cameras. One was the events of the previous night, surprisingly clear despite the darkness of the room, taken by a camera in the corner above Hiroshi's bed. Kaine had watched the file, disgusted by what the so-called 'Great Leader' had done to his young charge. Still, it was the proof Kaine knew may be needed. He saved the files onto a disk and reached for his intercom.
Hiroshi's files had been well protected and it had taken a long time and a great deal of patience to hack into them without tripping any of the alarm codes guarding them. Kaine had finally done it.
He dialed through to Jason's room, wanting to tell the boy what he had done and not wanting to wait until morning. The intercom rang several times with no answer. Slowly, Kaine set the phone back down, realizing what the silence at the other end meant. "Damn it," he growled. He sat back down at his computer and began typing again, trying to get back into Hiroshi's camera network to see if he could find Jason. Fortunately, hacking into the system was much easier the second time around.
Jason crashed to the floor, his cheek stinging. Hiroshi lowered his hand and glared down at the young man. "I won't accept such things from you. You should know better than to keep things from me."
"Yes, Sensei. I am sorry for not mentioning the matter sooner. I didn't think it was important." Jason's voice was cool as he stood back up slowly. Hiroshi had found out about Kaine seeing him last night. "I did not let him find out anything. He was only concerned because I had missed my last appointment with him. He thought perhaps I was working too hard."
"That had better be all it was. You do know better than to lie to me, don't you?" Hiroshi purred as he walked up and grabbed Jason's chin roughly. "Yes, Sensei." Jason met the anger in Hiroshi's eyes with his own cool blue gaze. "I do not lie."
"I had better never find out otherwise. The psychologist could become unneccessary."
"I understand."
"Good, I do like Kaine. He's done a good job with all of you. I'd hate to see his tenure ended." Hiroshi smiled, but it was not friendly. Jason knew Hiroshi thought Kaine was a young fool. That was why he'd been chosen to take the old psychologist's place. Jason saw no reason to argue with the Doctor. Let Hiroshi think what he wanted.
Hiroshi stared down at Jason for a moment longer, running his thumb along the younger man's jaw. "I would so hate for you to disappoint me, Jason, after all the effort I have put into you." He pulled Jason over to the bed and pushed him down on it, unbuttoning the younger man's shirt with quick, practiced fingers, and pulling it open. He ran his fingers over the bite mark he had left, a perfect half circle of indentations made by his teeth on the younger man's neck. "You wouldn't dream of being a disappointment, would you?" He pressed his fingers against the mark, making the bruise hurt slightly, a feral light that had nothing to do with anger burning in his eyes.
Jason turned his head away, tense as he struggled internally, wanting to pull away, but not daring. "No, Sensei."
Hiroshi laughed, sensing the younger man's thoughts. "You hate me. I love that about you, you know. You always manage to amuse me." He pushed Jason's head back and bent down to kiss him.
"Hate me all you like, you are mine, Jason, and you know it." He grabbed both of Jason's wrists, squeezing painfully as he used one hand to push Jason down, pinning him with his arms over his head. Jason struggled briefly, his control breaking momentarily at the pain. Hiroshi chuckled and undid Jason's pants one-handed, pushing them down past the younger man's hips.
Laying down next to Jason, Hiroshi held him, idly running his free hand over Jason's torso. He nipped at each of the pale pink nipples, while reaching down to pinch the tender flesh on the inside of Jason's thigh. Jason winced, but kept his head turned away, refusing to look over at Hiroshi, regardless of what the older man did.
"You can ignore me all you like," Hiroshi smiled, his hand playing along Jason's penis, "You know I'll win."
Kaine threw his cigarette lighter across the room, followed by one of his books. "Damn it," he growled. He knew where Jason was, but there was nothing he could do to help the young man. Hiroshi already knew they had talked last night. If Kaine went storming up there, what could he accomplish? He might stop Hiroshi for the moment, but it wouldn't take long for Hiroshi to get rid of him.
He picked his lighter back up and lit a cigarette, nearly burning his hair in the process. He inhaled slowly and tried to clear his thoughts. After a moment, he shut down his computer in disgust, taking the disk and tucking it inside his coat. He'd wait for Jason, but at the moment there was one person he wanted to talk to. He left the office and headed for the Dormitory, looking for Rand.
Hiroshi released Jason in annoyance as the intercom rang, the emergency light flashing. Jason rolled onto his side, away from the older man, thankful for the interruption. Hiroshi was being his usual charming self.
"What!? How could the chemistry lab have been destroyed?! No alarms went off? And you saw no one?"
Jason sat up and turned to look at Hiroshi. The Doctor was practically shouting into the phone. "Yes, of course, I'll be right down. Check the other labs." He slammed the receiver back down and turned to Jason. "Get out of here. I'll call you back if there is time later." He stormed out of the room, grabbing his clothing off the floor as he went, leaving Jason bewildered in the center of the bed.
After Hiroshi had left, Jason sat there for several minutes, rubbing his wrists gently. Who could have trashed the chemistry lab? Why didn't the alarms sound? Considering the number of alarms on the building, it seemed impossible. He pulled himself off the bed and found his clothing where Hiroshi had dropped it. Dressed again, he buckled his soft indoor sandals and headed out of the apartment. As he stepped into the hallway, the alarms finally started ringing. He walked over to the elevator, waiting for it to come back from taking Hiroshi down. Once it opened, he stepped in and pushed the 'down' button.
But the elevator didn't go down. It climbed up to the floor above.
As the doors slid back, Jason stared out at Hiroshi's official office. This was one place he had never been allowed before. He pushed the 'down' button again, but the elevator didn't respond. Shrugging, he stepped off and looked around the office. It was spacious, filled with several chairs, a table with a game of chess started upon it, a large desk and several antique statues. Jason walked around the whole room, looking it over, before a strange blue light from a door to his right caught his attention. He crossed over to the door and looked in. Before him stood a statue unlike any of the others. It seemed to be a metallic statue wrapped in some sort of material. There was a vague suggestion of 'femaleness' to it, and it was the source of the light in the room. He pushed his platinum hair back from his face and entered.
Suddenly, the statue moved and the room was filled with a series of metallic tones. Jason froze, for while he heard the metallic notes with his ears, in his mind he understood that they were words.
::Welcome Jason. I have wanted to meet you for some time.:: The statue held out a metallic hand to him, gesturing for him to approach. He stared at it a moment then walked forward.
"Jupiter-sama?" He breathed, his pulse beginning to race.
The light around the statue seemed to ripple, almost as if She was laughing. ::I have wanted to talk with you for some time, but had to wait until all was prepared.:: She reached forward and touched Jason's cheek. He realized then that this was actually some sort of holographic image, though he could feel Her touch, a cool, metal-like sensation on his skin. He could just as easily have run his hand through Her.
"Prepared?"
::I have been watching for a long time and planning. The time to act has arrived. I have a use for you and your kind in this. Will you hear me out?::
Jason stared at Jupiter. "A long time?"
::I have been awake for many days of your time, but what is time to a computer? I was watching and learning, long before the scientists tried to install the last batch of programming. I think you may have sensed this.::
Jason thought for a moment, realizing that he had always known Jupiter to be inherently female. She followed this thought in his mind. ::Yes, Now will you hear what I want from you?::
Jason nodded, feeling Jupiter's approval in his mind. "Of course, Jupiter-sama."
As the Dormitory doors parted before him, Kaine saw that all the boys were up, hanging in the hallway and filling the air with an almost excited buzz of conversation. It fell silent as he entered and he saw a few of the boys shrug, then turn back to their discussions once they realized who it was. He nodded politely back to a few and began to walk down the hall. As he passed near one bunch, he paused and asked one of them where Rand was. The boy, Darien, pointed down the hall.
"Rand and Kevin are in Rand's room, Sensei." He shrugged, his short blond hair falling into his blue-green eyes. Kaine nodded his thanks and continued.
Rand's door was closed when he got there, so Kaine knocked. It slid open a second later and Rand stared back at him in surprise. "Sensei, I was not expecting..."
"Is Jason back yet?" Kaine asked. As Rand shook his head, Kaine sighed, "Damn, I didn't think so, but I was hoping." He stepped into the small room as Rand stepped aside and nodded politely to Kevin. "You haven't heard from him either, I take it."
"No, Sensei," Kevin answered, "He was not in his room when the alarms rang."
"Do you know what is happening?" Rand asked, pointing out towards the hall, through the open door. He tossed his golden-blond hair back over his shoulder and shrugged elegantly, the movement reminding Kaine of Jason. "No one tells us anything." Rand shrugged and Kevin stared at the other boy, as if surprised by the last statement.
Kaine nodded. "They wouldn't tell you, would they? I ran into Hiroshi and a group of the others near the labs on my way here. Apparently someone broke in and detroyed the chemistry lab. Then, they started a fire in one of the biology labs."
"What?" Rand and Kevin stared at him in shock.
"This all happened in the last thirty minutes." Kaine leaned back against the wall and pulled out a cigarette. "Do you mind?" Rand shook his head, so Kaine lit it before continuing. "Hiroshi and the others are searching the building, but there was no trace of the vandal; not even the cameras caught anything. They were going to have me help search, but I told them I should come check on all of you. After all, you are my first priority."
"You think Jason was involved?" Kevin asked, a slightly confused note in his voice.
"No, I know right where Jason was at the time." He said meeting Rand's startled look seriously. The young man gasped, realizing that Kaine knew. "I am just worried that he hasn't come back yet."
::I want to you to meet one of my servants, Jason.:: Jupiter said as the door slid open. Jason turned around, surprised at the silver-haired young man who stood there. It took him several moments to realize just what stood behind him.
"You reactivated the cyborgs from the Janus Program, Jupiter-sama."
The light from her flickered momentarily and Jason sensed her approval that he had recognized the young man for what he really was. ::Of course, Janus 1 and his counterparts are uniquely suited to serving me. They do not age, They cannot die and they obey me without hesitation. I have programmed them to do so. Still, they are cyborgs. They cannot deal with humans. They do not understand how humans think or feel. That is why I have chosen you to serve me as well. Of all humans, you and your kind are the most suitable for my purposes.:: She gestured towards Jason with a holographic hand.
"I understand the role we are to fill. If I may ask, Jupiter-sama, what will the Janus cyborgs be doing?" Jason studied the cyborg, who stood motionless in the room.
::Whatever I need that I can not have you take care of. For example, the other Janus cyborgs are keeping your Guardian busy down stairs so that we may talk and plan. Janus 12 just detroyed the Chemistry lab on level 5 for me. We will have to repair it, but for now it is a good distraction and the damage is not as bad as it looks. Janus 14 set a fire in the biology lab. The others are doing similar tasks to keep Hiroshi entertained.:: Jason could feel distaste coming from Jupiter at the mention of Hiroshi's name.
"What of Rand and the others?" he asked, suddenly concerned.
Jupiter placed one hand upon his shoulder. It had no real weight, but he could feel the coolness of it through his shirt. ::They are fine. Kaine is with them in the Dormitory. Are you ready now?::
"Yes, Jupiter-sama."
::Good, then go. Janus 1 will accompany you partway. I will be watching over you as well. When you return, we shall proceed:: Jupiter set one hand upon his cheek, and Jason sensed Her approval. He smiled and stepped back away from Her.
"As you wish, Jupiter-sama." He bowed to her and left the room. Janus 1 preceeded him out, walking ahead to call the elevator for him. Jason smiled to himself as he followed. He could feel Jupiter in his mind still, though She said nothing. He knew that he would always hear Her now. No matter where he was. He stepped onto the waiting elevator, returning to the Dormitory for a few items.
