"No, not at all," Matthew assured her. He didn't want her to get upset and have a breakdown outside of her room. That wouldn't sit well with any of his superiors.
Alice smiled. "See? Isn't it so much better when you agree with me?"
"I agree only because I do not have a choice," he told her. "When I do not agree you get upset."
She shrugged. "Maybe it's because I'm always right and you are always wrong," she said and sat down.
"Somehow I sincerely doubt that is the case," he told her.
She smiled. "Ok."
He rolled his eyes, unable to understand why she felt so superior. Shaking his head, he filled out something on a clipboard. "Stay right there," he told her. Moving to the other side of the room, he pulled back a curtain, revealing a patient that was already there hooked up on tubes. "I'll be behind this. Just don't move or touch anything." With that he pulled the curtain back, shielding himself from view.
Alice sat in the chair and pulled her legs to herself while holding her rabbit. She could see his silhouette behind the curtain so she could see him moving around. Already she was bored, but she didn't touch a thing.
Matthew quite literally whistled while he worked. He was searching for a cure for the madness. He'd tried drugging it out of patients, burning it out, shocking it out, and cutting it out. The last time he thought he was close, thus he was trying again. A spray of blood, slammed against the curtain as he made an incision. "So, Alice," he said, trying to make certain that she was still there. "Are the drugs still numbing the pain?"
Alice watched as the thick blackness hit the curtain and blocked parts of her Mr. Hatter. She tilted her head to the side, wondering what he was doing. Something hit her nose, something familiar...the scent of blood. Quickly, she put her rabbit over her nose to keep the smell out though it did little good since her rabbit was covered in her own blood from days ago. "I think White Rabbit needs a wash, Mr. Hatter. When can I bathe him?" she asked, completely ignoring his question, not because she wanted to but because she simply didn't remember what he had said.
Matthew paused, looking back at the curtain, he shrugged. "I will talk to Mr. Cat about washing it for you," he told her before busying himself with his work.
"Mr. Cat will drown him!" she said in shock. She couldn't believe he would suggest such a thing. "White Rabbit only lets me care for him. You know that."
He sighed, growing slightly annoyed by her reaction. "Very well then. You may take him with you the next time you shower and you can wash him off then."
She blushed. "He can't shower with me...I'm a girl..."
"What does your gender have to do with it, Alice?" He was growing annoyed.
"He's a boy...it would be like me showering with Mr. Cat...or..." she swallowed and blushed brighter at the thought of her next words, "or with you..."
"Mr. Cat has seen you undressed and showering numerous times. You wanted me in there with you while you showered as well. Why should your stuffed animal be any different?"
He didn't get it. She hated that he was so different in Wonderland. Looking at her rabbit, she sighed sadly, her face softened with the sadness. "Just forget it...you don't understand anything in this world," she whispered.
Once more he just shook his head as he started working. He was curious if Alice would ever be able to escape the confides of her own mental instability.
Alice laid her head on her knees. Every time she felt like Mr. Hatter in this world was acting more like himself in Wonderland, she would only be mistaken. He was so confusing to her and it was driving her nuts. Didn't he know he was just making things harder when she switched between the worlds? She closed her eyes and thought of her Mad Hatter in Wonderland. She missed that Hatter more than anything. As she stroked her rabbit, she wondered once again when she would get to go back.
Matthew worked in silence from that moment on. There were more spurts of blood and at a greater rate than before. Within a few minutes he cursed and slammed his hand hard against something. He stepped past the curtain, a frown on his lips, and blood drenching his shirt and coat. "Another failure," he sighed.
Alice looked up at him with a pale look. There was so much blood on him. She had never seen him like that before...and with such and angry look. It was...terrifying. She shrank into the chair she sat in, as if almost trying to hide behind her stuffed rabbit. What had he been doing behind that curtain? Did he...kill someone?
Matthew looked up quickly as he heard Alice mood. He stared at her for a second, his eyes hard before they softened. "Come on, Alice," he sighed. "I need to take a shower now so I'm going to have to take you back to your room."
She looked over at him. "Can't I just sit outside the door? I'll be really quiet," she promise. She bit her lip. Slowly, she held out her rabbit. "You can...take White Rabbit for a shower too..." It was the first time she had willingly offered her rabbit to anyone. "As long as you bring him back...clean."
He looked down at the stuffed animal that she was offering to him. This was a breakthrough. "Okay," he sighed. "You may sit outside the door and I will clean it while I take a shower."
She smiled. "Don't drown him."
"Fine," he told her. He reached out his hand to take the rabbit from her.
She hesitated and bit her lip again. She hugged her rabbit tightly for a few minutes and handed him to Matthew. As she sat on the floor next to the door, she watched him walk in and leave the door open. She could hear the shower start and the ruffling of clothes. She blushed.
After tossing his clothes on the ground, he stretched and moaned when the warm water hit his skin. He stayed in there for quite some time simply enjoying the satisfaction of the feeling. After a few minutes, however, he started to wash himself off. It wasn't until he was satisfied with his appearance that he grabbed the rabbit and quickly washed it off for her.
Alice knew she had promised not to peek, but she didn't think one look would do any bad. Taking deep breaths as her heart picked up, she leaned over and tilted her head over. Her eyes washed over the bathroom.
Seeing as how he was in his private area of the asylum, he didn't think it was important to pull the curtain back over the shower when he had opened it to grab the rabbit. He continued cleaning it until all the blood was gone from its fur. Then he set it aside and ran his hands over himself, rubbing the water into his skin. After shuddering at the feeling, he reached over to turn the shower off.
Alice's heart nearly burst from her chest as she watched him shower. Every muscle, every mark...it was so plain for her to see. She swallowed and shuddered. Her body reacted to him...but not like the Mad Hatter in Wonderland. It felt...so much more real. When she saw him start to turn the shower off, she quickly snapped away from the door and forced herself to take deep breaths so she wouldn't lose oxygen. Her face was flushed and her chest tight.
After he toweled off, he looked down at his bloody clothes and shook his head which was still dripping wet. Sighing, he bundled them up and wrapped the towel around his waist. He grabbed her rabbit and started out, stopping when he reached the door. "Alice," he said, blinking so that he could see her. "Run into the bathroom and grab my glasses for me."
Alice stood. Her eyes washed over him and she felt like jello. For a long moment, she just stared at him while her heart went wild. "I...rabbit...ok..." she said in a stutter then rushed in the bathroom and grabbed his glasses. With her face still blazing red, she handed him his glasses and turned away, pulling her rabbit from him.
He fixed his glasses which were steamed up from his shower. Sighing, he figured that it was better than nothing. "Come on then. I have to go to my room to get clean clothes," he said as he started down the hallway. Looking back, he noticed that her face was blood red. "What are you so excited about?"
"N-nothing!" she said quickly.
"Alice, you've always been a wonderful liar. Don't start getting bad at it now," he said as he pushed open the door to his personal area.
Alice groaned. She didn't like lying. When did she really ever lie to him? She walked behind him in his room and looked around. Books were everywhere. She held her wet rabbit close while looking at his things. There were tools she had never seen before and pictures of him with people she had never met before. Her fingers danced about, picking up things and feeling things. This room...it seemed like another world to her, mostly because she never pictured her Hatter to have a life without her in it. To put it simple, she thought his world revolved around her.
"Be careful with everything," he said. He pulled out some clothes and kept his back to her as he dropped his towel and began changing.
She turned to him to speak, but dropped her rabbit as she stared at his backside. He was only a few feet from her and she could see every freckle so perfectly. Once more, her heart picked up and her panties became very uncomfortable.
Matthew stopped as he felt something soft press against his foot. Bending down, he picked up her rabbit. Turning to her, he looked at her face, curious about what was going on in her head. "Alice, you dropped your rabbit."
"My...what?" she mumbled, unable to take her eyes off him. It was like a switch in her head. Something just....clicked.
"Your rabbit," he stated slowly. She was staring at him hard, as if her eyes could see right through him. It sent shivers down him. He moved to her, his clothes in a pile where he'd attempted to put them on. Taking her hand, he tried to give her back her rabbit.
Alice took a slight step back, her head felt...fuzzy. She backed into his book shelf and stopped. She looked him over once more and reached out for her rabbit. Things were slowly clearing up and somehow she just knew that the mad before her wasn't her Mad Hatter. He was the Hatter of the institution. "Thanks," she said slowly.
He nodded. Fixing his glasses, he turned from her and started to get dressed once more.
"Getting dressed in front of me isn't very...what's the word...doctor like?" she smirked and pulled her rabbit to her. "Not very responsible, Mr. Hatter."
He looked back at her. The thought finally connecting in his mind. "Yes, I do suppose you are correct," he admitted. "Was that the reason you've been blushing so much?"
"Let's see, I peeked in on you showering and got an eyeful. Then you came out wearing nothing but a towel," she pointed out. Her hand brushed her cheeks. "Then this happened. I'm sure you can figure out why a teenage girl would be blushing."
He quirked an eyebrow, fixing his glasses with a finger. "You peeked in on me when I was showering? That's not very lady like."
"I'm seventeen and the most I've seen of a man was of Wonderland. Unless you count the time you let me get raped. Yes, I totally blame you," she said as she picked up one of the many books. "You are a rather boring person, you know. Who really reads crap like this anyways?"
"For the record, Alice. I didn't let you get raped. Secondly, I don't see how any of this could possibly be my fault." He fixed his pants and started putting on his shirt. "Most of those books were gifts. I haven't gotten around to reading them all."
She put the book down. "I warned you. I said that I didn't want to be a victim again and I told you they would come back. You always think I'm crazy and I babble. Did you ever think there would be truth behind that babble?" She rolled her eyes. "God forbid a crazy person to be right. You should have guarded me door. You should have kept an eye on them. My innocence was stolen while I was stuck in Wonderland and the person that was suppose to make sure I'm always safe wasn't there. Yes, it's your fault, Mr. Hatter." Though her words were harsh, she said it all with a shrug, as if she no longer cared. Really, she didn't. It was over, there was no going back. She could cry about it but that would only keep her from achieving her goal: returning to Wonderland.
While buttoning up his shirt, he kept his eyes trained on her. "You do have a point. However, the problem has been dealt with. The twins will never get near you again. I can apologize for not taking your fears seriously, but that will not repair the damage that was done to you."
"Yes, well, as long as you know that you were wrong and I was right. Maybe now you'll listen to what I say and take me more seriously, even when I'm a little...out there. Next time something worse might happen," she said. Walking over to him, she fixed his collar on his shirt. "My first experience was ruined and a part of me will always carry that around. But the real part that seems to matter the most to me was that somewhere in between Wonderland and here and my rape, you saved me. You stopped it before any real damage was done. And I can't feel sorry for myself knowing that I was saved. So you're forgiven. For now."
He smirked at that. "Gee, thank you for forgiving me," he said as he stared into her eyes. "I'll make certain to try and pay more attention to your words. Those you must admit, you make it rather hard to do so."
She shrugged. "You should know by now that I don't do things the normal way. You just need to get to know me better, Mr. Hatter." Smiling she stood on her tippy-toes to lean up to his face. "Happy Un-birthday, Mr. Hatter," she whispered and kissed the corner of his mouth.
Matthew paused as she kissed the corner of his mouth. "Alice?" He looked at her curiously, but shook his head. "Happy un-birthday, Alice."
She pulled back. "I think this is the beginning of a really great relationship, Mr. Hatter. After all, you are a Mad Hatter in your own sense and let's face it...I'm attracted to mad things."
"I'm not mad," he told her quickly, wondering what her idea of a relationship was. "Besides, the Mad Hatter belongs only to you, isn't that correct? And what do you mean by...attracted?"
"You ask way too many questions sometimes. And no matter how you look at it, if you are here, in this place, you are mad. What was it that my Hatter said?" she asked and looked off into space. "Oh yes, 'You can't help it. We are all mad here.'"
He shook his head. "I am here to help cure the madness. Not because I am mad."
She turned her back to him, waving his comment off. "Sure, believe what you want. I don't really care."
"Now who isn't listening to the truth?" He grabbed a new coat and pulled it on. After fixing it, he grabbed his other clothes and pushed them into his hamper.
"I don't have to listen, Mr. Hatter. I'm not here to listen to you. I'm here because someone declared me unfit for society," she said smiling. "I'm hungry. What do I have to do to get you to feed me?"
He sighed and rolled his eyes. "If you had been in your room Mr. Cat would have come by with your lunch."
"I'm spending my day with you, though. You're stuck with me so either feed me or I'll whine until you do."
He chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Very well then. Come and I'll see what we can feed you."
Smiling, Alice placed her hand on his chest. "Not so fast. I still haven't gotten my un-birthday gift."
He stopped, surprised by this sudden action. Looking down at her hand and then to her, he let his lips form a small smirk. "And just what do you want for your un-birthday gift?"
"After all this time, you still ask. You really don't listen, do you? You are not very good at this whole doctor thing."
