"I realize this. But all my other patients are too drugged up, so I'm rather bored at the moment."
"I'll be getting a new drug soon," she said. "I might end up like them."
He frowned as he heard this. "I'll look into what they're giving you. I'd rather you not be a mindless, drooling, zombie."
"Do you get a say in what I get?" she asked. "Where you the one that decided not to be my doctor anymore?"
"No, I wasn't," he told her. "That was handed down from the higher ups...."
She nodded. "And if I say I want you to be my doctor they will let you?"
"It will go a long way in me being reinstated as your doctor."
"I don't think the world of the person that tried to kill you will do much..." she said. She hugged her rabbit tighter. "But...if you do become my doctor again...what will become of us? And don't say 'what do you want?' That drives me nuts."
"That depends," he said after a few moments. "I would personally like to continue our...relationship, but it will be harder than ever now that your new doctor is keeping tabs on me."
Alice moved her hair behind her ear. "I don't understand why you want to go back to things when I tried to kill you. Why don't you hate me?"
"Because I know that person that tried to kill me wasn't you."
She met his eyes. "Then who was it?"
He smiled at that. "Yes, perhaps it is silly, but it still doesn't change the fact that the person who attacked me wasn't you."
"I wish I could tell you for sure that it wasn't...but I don't remember," she said. She hesitated but moved closer to him. Her stitched hand rested on its back on his thigh. She laid her head on his shoulder. "I'm not saying that you will...but if you became my doctor again...will you be scared of me?"
He took a deep breath as she moved against him. "I cannot promise that things will go back to exactly how they were before. Do you remember how scared you were of me when you thought that I had killed the Director? It sort of feels like that. I know you won't hurt me like you are...but it will take some time for me to completely feel comfortable again." His hand slowly reached out and rubbed her leg.
She nodded against him. "I don't know why I snapped...but maybe you should work on that drug to help me...the one you said you would. I'll tell my doctor I want you as my doctor."
"I will work on it," he promised. He stroked her leg soothingly, wishing that none of this had ever happened. "Tell her...and we'll see what happens."
Alice looked up at him. She leaned in, only inches from his face and was about to kiss him when she heard a key push into the lock. Quickly, she moved from him, creating a large gap between them just as the door opened. Dr. Till looked at both of them. She had Alice's dinner in her hands.
"Dr. Hatsfield...why are you here?" she asked and handed Alice her tray of food. "I want to make sure you eat all of it." She turned back to Matthew and held out her hand. "I must ask for your key to her room."
"I want..." Alice started. The doctor snapped her head to Alice. "I want him to be my doctor again..." she whispered.
"That's not possible."
"And why is that not possible? Aside from yesterday's incident Alice's records have been immaculate under my care and supervision. Both of which have been a positive effect on Alice."
"The question remains of your relation with Alice, doctor. You won't answer why you were strapped to a chair and glass shattered around you. The higher up are questioning you."
"We allowed her a mirror on her birthday," he told her. "She was doing remarkably well, and we didn't see the harm in allowing her one for a few moments. It was careless, and it is not something which will happen again."
"Why were you strapped to a chair wearing nothing but a medical gown?" she snapped.
"I...I put him in it..." Alice said.
The doctor looked at her. "You said earlier that you couldn't remember."
"I remember now...pieces of it," Alice said. She glanced at the doctor then at Matthew then back to the doctor. "I hit him in the head first...and he blacked out..." She pointed to the large swelling on his cheek. "It didn't take much to undress an unconscious person. Then I strapped him to the chain and jacket...."
"You do realize that admitting what you did is a very big step for you, Alice. I think..."
"It's because of Mr. Hatter that I remember. He was here to work with me on it..."
She was covering for him and the nurse. Mainly the nurse for doing it.... "See? I am clearly the best choice of doctor for her."
The doctor sighed and wrote something on her clipboard. "I'll notify those that need to know. I'm sure they will want to speak with you, doctor. Until then, she's mine." She held out her hand. "Your key."
Matthew looked at Alice, nodding slowly he reached into his pocket and handed Dr. Till the key. "There you are."
Dr. Till closed her hand around it then put it in her pocket. "Thank you for your cooperation." She looked at Alice. "Eat it all, Alice."
Alice looked down at her tray. "What...is it?"
"The same food everyone else gets."
"Mr. Cat makes my food."
"I told him you shouldn't get special treatment."
"I'm not eating this," Alice said and shoved the tray to the doctor.
The doctor's eyes narrowed. "I was hoping you wouldn't be aggressive, Alice." She pushed the tray back to Alice. "Eat it."
"No," Alice growled with hard eyes.
"I'm your doctor and you will do as I say!"
Alice threw the tray across the room.
"It's not that bad, Alice," Matthew said, wincing as the tray was tossed across the room. That wasn't good. "I eat it myself when I don't have time to prepare something."
Alice didn't take her eyes off the doctor. Dr. Till's lips were tight and her face hard. "I don't play games, Alice. I don't like them." She grabbed Alice's hand and Alice screamed in pain, the stitches pulled and grinding into her palm. Her eyes watered. Dr. Till pulled her to her feet. "You will learn manners and you will learn discipline."
Alice's eyes darkened. Her body began to shake. "You are not the boss of me!" she screamed. She swung her hand, but the doctor caught it.
"Not this time," she snapped.
Before Alice could react, the doctor twisted her arm and Alice screamed. She landed on her knees. The doctor pulled out a needle and stuck it in Alice's arm. In a matter of seconds, Alice's limp body fell to the ground. Dr. Till lifted her into the bed. "She's going to be a handful, but most patients I get are. She will learn just like the rest of them."
Matthew stood up quickly, nearly falling over in the process. "There are other ways of handling her besides violence," he told her. "In a matter of hours you've changed everything she knew. She's bound to be upset by it."
"She's eighteen. She's young enough to adjust. Don't tell me how to do my job. I've been doing it for a lot longer than you and I've been cleaning up messes for doctor's like you. Until she gets assigned a new doctor, I will treat just the same as I have treated every patient I have. 95% of them walked out of the asylum cured and happy. Alice will be one of them when I'm done," she snapped.
Matthew's eyes narrowed as he stared daggers into her. "Very well then, doctor." There was little he could say. For the moment he answered to her in the Director's absence. "I will, however, remind you that excessive force is frowned upon."
"It was before I came. Why do you think they chose me for the job? Because nothing else worked."
"Believe me when I say this, you do not want to hurt her," he said as he took a step toward her.
"Is that a threat?" she growled with hard eyes.
"Why would I threaten you? You're obviously accustomed to beating up the helpless," he told her with a small smirk. "Shouldn't it be me who feels threatened?"
"I don't beat the helpless, I disciple the rebels. Obviously you know that seeing as how she easily beat the shit out of you. What I do to teach my patient is my business. The board has no objections so stay out of it." She started to the door. "For now on, I don't want you around her unless the board says otherwise."
"Yes, well, until you start signing my paychecks, I'll just take your words into advisement. Doesn't mean I have to listen to them." He limped to the door, his hands shaking as he held onto the wall for support.
"You seem unfit to perform you duties. I'll have a replacement sent for you. A few days off will do you good," she said and walked out while flipping open her cell phone.
"I don't need a replacement," he told her harshly. "I will be fine. I live in this damn asylum. A day off is still work except I don't get paid for it."
She only nodded and talked into the phone, ignoring him completely.
Alice woke hours later. She had no idea what time it was since she had no window. The food and tray had been cleaned and her light was off. She assumed it was dark out and she was suppose to be in bed. She couldn't see very well with it dark, but she knew her hand didn't look good with the way it felt.
The next morning Matthew gave himself a shot and got dressed. He wasn't going to miss a day of work. He hadn't even seen Mr. Cat in two days. He had been reassigned, and there was nothing that he could do about it. Sighing, he winced as he got up. His leg was stiff, but the pain was numbed. He walked down the hallways until he found Dr. Till. "Has the board decided anything yet?"
"They will be calling you today with their decision," she said and looked in the window on the door of one of her patients' rooms. She wrote something down and went to the next one doing the same. "They will be calling me after they call you to tell me if I'm leaving or not." She repeated without looking.
"Well, one can certainly hope for good news," he said, not even bothering with courtesies, even though if she stayed she would be his boss.
Dr. Till swung Alice's door open and watched Alice shield her face from the light. "Learn to turn your light on, Alice." She flipped the switch and the light came on.
"I didn't know what time it was. I didn't want to turn on the light and get in trouble if it was suppose to be time for me to sleep."
"Well you know now. Are you hungry?"
"Yes."
"I'll have food sent to you."
"I want Mr. Cat to make it."
Dr. Till groaned. "You will eat what you are given or nothing at all."
"Then I won't eat," Alice snapped. "I want to see Mr. Cat!"
"He will be by later I'm sure. He's still your nurse," she snapped back. "And fine. I don't care if you don't eat. Starve to death for all I care." She slammed the door and Alice screamed in frustration.
Matthew waited for her to leave. He nodded down the hallway as Mr. Cat started for Alice's room with some food for her. He opened up her door, holding a finger to his lips as he brought her a sandwich. "Eat it quickly," he told her.
Alice jumped up for the sandwich. She shoved it in her mouth. "Thank you so much, Mr. Cat," she said with a mouthful.
He smiled and stroked her hair. "You're welcome sweetie. Just eat it quick and don't let the mean ole lady know I gave it to you."
She nodded. "I would never tell on you," she said as she chewed. "So good..."
He looked at her, frowning as he looked at her hand. "Want me to restitch that for you?"
Alice looked at her hand. It was pretty messed up. "I suppose." She sat on the bed. "Can you believe she assigned me another nurse to work with you? Well...I guess it's nice that you get some days off..."
"I'll be getting a new drug soon," she said. "I might end up like them."
